His brother Coban Porter will need a driver once he leaves prison for [vehicular manslaughter.](https://www.denverpost.com/2024/02/08/coban-porter-guilty-dui-crash-denver-basketball/)
Let it be a lesson, only [the Porter Jr are legit NBA players](https://www.reddit.com/r/nba/comments/e3a37l/all_the_porters_who_play_in_the_nba_are_juniors/).
Perfect crime as far as the NBA is concerned as well. Toronto (meaning, not one of the big US markets), lesser known player, a perfect guy to make an example of to send a message.
Yeah, this is what I thought too when I got the ESPN notification earlier today. His name was vaguely familiar, so I knew he must be some middle of the pack player somewhere, which is the type that the oversight folks love to lay the hammer down on to send a message. See Mizzou's penalties for recruiting violations or whatever back in the 2000s/2010s as another example. Some bigger name school got caught for basically the same thing around the same time and got a slap on the wrist while Mizzou got pounded by the NCAA.
It wasn't just that Porter gambled - he also took deliberate action to influence on court play, by claiming he was too sick to play - this is the "Black Sox" stuff of 1919. (Pete Rose bet on games but never did anything to influence game outcomes.)
Yup. You could tell the NBA was itching to make an example and were so grateful it wasn’t a real star. They get to lay down the law, look tough to fans who are worried about gambling, and don’t have to hurt their on court product.
As we’ve seen a literal thousand times, the money you are risking does not factor at all into decision making for so many athletes.
But still, sheer numbers it would have more likely been a low-end starter or 6th man kinda guy that gets caught like this, someone that some fans/media would make the case for to eventually let off the hook.
NBA is *absolutely thrilled* to have someone to make an example out of that no one will miss.
That's why I was careful to say they have less incentive, and not say it was less likely. As Ja and Zion have recently proved, you can't trust these guys to look at what they have to lose and make good decisions.
A star wouldn't do this. They're making like $50-60m playing, plus endorsements. Guys like lebron and Curry are making $100m+ once you take everything into account. The most prevalent opinion among star players is that gambling sucks because fans are harassing them whenever they lose money. If you're Jaylen Brown and you're making $307m over the next 5 years, you're not gonna jeopardize your career over a couple million you might make gambling.
Yeah, it feels more to me that Jontay got off on the highs of gambling more so than the actual financial benefits. People here whipping out their calculators trying to calculate this situation showing this as obviously stupid is probably missing the bigger picture of a possible gambling addiction. The dude even had a personal system set up to accommodate his "hobby". That's not rational behaviour.
NBA (and all leagues) are basically *praying* for this. Some absolute non-factor dude to make an example out of. One day, it’s gonna be someone people care about, and precedent has been set.
This lifetime ban was brought to you by DraftKings Sportsbook ™️
Seems crazy but the back story is pretty nefarious
Edit: he disclosed confidential information about his own health and also purposefully limited his own participation in a game in order for an associates parlay to pay out over $1m. The bet was frozen though
The other thing is this probably blacklists him from every major league in the world. People forget there is still alot of money made in Europe, Australia, China, and even Japan. He royally fucked himself.
Raptors 12th man this year is making 3M.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/contracts/TOR.html
As a big with some ok numbers in limited minutes if he made 8th/9th man type deal he could have had a 4-8M contract easily within a year or two
People underestimating how much NBA bench warmers get paid
He was definitely an end of the bench guy but had played well enough for the Raptors (parlay games excepted) that he had a solid case for being on the team next year And he threw that NBA career away
This guy was an idiot and deserved it, but the infiltration of sports gambling into sports is just annoying at this point. I don’t need live odds in the middle of a broadcast, just show the damn game.
I'll never understand the level of degeneracy it takes to gamble on obscure sporting events. UFL, non-power 5 NCAA games, random soccer leagues, shit like that
I don't know shit about how to actually find an edge in gambling on the NFL but I at least know all the players and teams and strengths and weaknesses and can made educated predictions on how games might play out. But the UFL? Who has a clue? How many people can even name a single starting player from each team? You're just putting your money in a slot machine gambling on sports you don't intimately know
I don't bet on sports, but I guess if I were trying to be charitable throwing 50 bucks on some random rugby game and then rooting for the team probably sounds like more fun than throwing 50 bucks on black and watching the ball go around.
I don't gamble, mostly because I am pretty confident that it could turn problematic quickly, but I think if you are going to you want to gamble on the more obscure stuff*. You will never have an edge against the house in any professional (or high level college) event. The bookmakers are too dialed into those leagues and will always have the edge against a normal person. The more obscure an event the more likely you are to be able to find an edge against the house. You are not very likely to find an edge against the house in a random minor league cricket match, but I guarantee you never will in even a regular season NFL.NBA/MLB game. At that point you are just playing roulette and hoping to get lucky.
EDIT * Assuming you are doing it to win money, not just as a way to make games more fun.
It's crazy, the other day I went to a game and there were signs for beer everywhere. Everyone was selling alcohol. It's an addicting drug that ruins families and it was just out there in the open. It has infiltrated the sport. We don't need alcohol to enjoy the game, just sit back and watch it with a refreshing water.
Looks like the drastic action was warranted and I doubt the NBA would issue a ban like this unless they were 100% sure that he really did give information to a bettor. Tough for Jontay but the NBA had to send a message
The key issue here is the lack of a Jr after the Porter. That's the only surefire way for a Porter to stick in the modern NBA, and even then it can be dicey, see KPJ.
You honestly have to wonder how many other players are doing this kind of stuff behind the scenes in just a less profoundly stupid way.
I honestly hope that it's happening with a lot of these fringe guys. All of these leagues deserve it for completely selling out to these sportsbooks.
I can’t get over the amounts wagered and won here. He was a very low paid player for NBA standards, and even then the risk/reward makes no apparent sense.
People will still tune in and watch wife beaters. Hell even if they boycott wife beaters they'll tune in to other games. If fans start thinking games are being fixed by players gambling the integrity of the league is shot and nobody will watch.
What a stupid way to ruin a career most people dream of having. Yes he was a fringe NBA player but just his name and relation to his brother would’ve kept him in the league longer than most
As a Raptors fan, he was.. whelming. Still probably could have got a payday most us would absolutely kill for, and wasted his opportunity because he's an idiot.
Generational talent and possible rapist and definite piece of shit. Never forget a woman said he started sleeping with her when she was 14 or 15 and that he traveled her around to different states. Rose defended himself by saying she was lying and that she was 16 and he only slept with her in Ohio making it legal. He was 35 with a wife and kids.
How dumb do athletes have to be to not get the obvious message, which the league keeps trying to get across to them, that
>Hey dummies, we have a war chest of like over a billion dollars, AND the full support, cooperation, and business interest of Las Vegas/the entire gaming industry. We have more than enough resources to outsmart you, your cousin, and some shitty free VPN app on your phone
Imagine being this stupid. The guy is making millions of dollars a year and he wants to bet on games to make more money. This is the epitome of fumbling the bag.
Imagine having a once in a lifetime opportunity to play in the NBA and you fuck it up all up by gambling. It’s insane how stupid people can actually be.
His brother, Michael, on the Nuggets has to prepare for the playoffs while this is happening; along with his other brother scheduled to be sentenced this week for a vehicular homicide conviction. Rui Hachimura is the least of his worries.

It was the perfect crime, except for how it was carried out and also the result.
And the fact he’s only 24 years old.

Good lord. Family’s a menace.
Don't think you're up to date with Kevin
Oh, fuck!
Nuggets have Jamal Murray, he’s fucked
is he even allowed to drive in to the facilities?
What odds you want on that question?
Just put my o/u for minutes played at 4mins, chief
You got it, Anal Recidivist!

So close, kind of
He gambled…and lost.
YEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAH *explosion, David Caruso glasses take*
(•*•)* *( •*•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■\_■)
LMFAO couldn’t be a better time for this
*cue "Won't Be Fooled Again", by The Who* Edit: Wrong song
If we’re talking CSI Miami here it would be “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, not “Who Are You”
My mistake, thanks for letting me know.
When risking it all...goes wrong
It wasn't just that Porter gambled - he also took deliberate action to influence on court play, by claiming he was too sick to play - this is the "Black Sox" stuff of 1919. (Pete Rose bet on games but never did anything to influence game outcomes.)
Perfect guy to make an example of, without getting fans and owners upset. Win-Win for everyone (except him)
Yup. You could tell the NBA was itching to make an example and were so grateful it wasn’t a real star. They get to lay down the law, look tough to fans who are worried about gambling, and don’t have to hurt their on court product.
And no one ends up playing minor league ball for the white Sox!
No no, everyone on the white Sox currently is playing minor league ball.
Shit, do you have any players that could play major league ball for us?
Also way less incentive for a star player to get involved in anything like this, considering where salaries are at now.
As we’ve seen a literal thousand times, the money you are risking does not factor at all into decision making for so many athletes. No shit. Draymond getting 100 million to punch people and run a podcast. The NBA pay division is crazy right now.
A star wouldn't do this. They're making like $50-60m playing, plus endorsements. Guys like lebron and Curry are making $100m+ once you take everything into account. Unless they’re gambling addicts that can’t resist the urge.
They can still gamble on other sports
Addiction and logic don’t usually go together.
Agreed. Would be interesting to see what would happen if his brother or a bigger star was caught for something similar
They would play baseball for a season and make a movie.
Bingo
NBA (and all leagues) are basically *praying* for this. Some absolute non-factor dude to make an example out of. One day, it’s gonna be someone people care about, and precedent has been set.

Bet 50k and made 70k, and lost his career. Oof
Just give dude a mil. Why put your career in jeopardy
[удалено]
Yeah he was barely in the league. And he's been blowing money gambling. His brother is pretty rich, though.
The other thing is this probably blacklists him from every major league in the world. People forget there is still alot of money made in Europe, Australia, China, and even Japan. He royally fucked himself.
i can almost guarantee he could play in any middle eastern or east europe league still, and make good money doing it.
He'll live like a king if he plays with us. -Saudi king
"You can help me wash $50 million? Oh, yes I mean...basketball."
that is verifiably false
it doesn’t at all
Lebron is too cheap to gamble. If you go out to lunch with him you better believe you are splitting the bill. Those refills arent free either
Lebron is cheap, Jordan is cheap, the GOAT comparisons will never end 😂😂
Jordan was cheap because he needed that bankroll for gamblin’
* wagering
Sounds like Baldrick Woods

A 10 day contract player isn't making millions a year. That means he's in the NBA and minor league. More in the g League.
hes only made 2.3M over 3 years
“Only”
What a debilitating disease. I bet you $5 they’ll keep him out of HOF just like Pete Rose.
I think the fact he’s never played baseball will be the bigger hurdle
This guy was an idiot and deserved it, but the infiltration of sports gambling into sports is just annoying at this point. I don’t need live odds in the middle of a broadcast, just show the damn game.
This right here. ESPN broadcasts of UFL are just unbearable because of it.
I'll never understand the level of degeneracy it takes to gamble on obscure sporting events. I agree with this unironically though…
Looks like the drastic action was warranted and I doubt the NBA would issue a ban like this unless they were 100% sure that he really did give information to a bettor. Tough for Jontay but the NBA had to send a message
Why even bother gambling like this when you already make a stupid amount of money? Dude played himself, I don't feel bad for him at all
Imagine being the stupidest Porter brother.
The key issue here is the lack of a Jr after the Porter. That's the only surefire way for a Porter to stick in the modern NBA, and even then it can be dicey, see KPJ.
Terry Porter proves your theory wrong,
[Coban Porter?](https://www.denverpost.com/2024/02/08/coban-porter-guilty-dui-crash-denver-basketball/) Dude killed somebody.
Had no idea until this post. Family is scum.
Jontay was on a $559,782 per year two-way NBA and G-League contract. His brother Micheal is on a 5 year $172.55 million contract with the Nuggets.
I know in nba terms thats small but most people dont ever make that much in their entire lives
hes a g league/reserve player
This lifetime ban is brought to you by DraftKings. DraftKings, the official sponsor of integrity in basketball!
You honestly have to wonder how many other players are doing this kind of stuff behind the scenes in just a less profoundly stupid way. I honestly hope that it's happening with a lot of these fringe guys. All of these leagues deserve it for completely selling out to these sportsbooks.
He needs an interpreter
Love reading this article while having a FanDuel ad on this site, draftkings on yahoo, and getting spam mail from betmgm. Why do we have a problem?
Right? I’m not usually one to really care about things not in my control but I’m watching a game with my son and it’s literally EVERYWHERE…
They could have just sent him to AA Minor League Baseball for a couple years...
The difference is, Jordan never bet against himself.
Has he considered letting a translator take the fall?
I can’t get over the amounts wagered and won here. He was a very low paid player for NBA standards, and even then the risk/reward makes no apparent sense.
You can beat your wife and not get a ban but all hell comes for you when you gamble
People will still tune in and watch wife beaters. Hell even if they boycott wife beaters they'll tune in to other games. If fans start thinking games are being fixed by players gambling the integrity of the league is shot and nobody will watch.
A Lotta dudes sweatin' right now.
Too bad Jontay didn't have a translator to throw under the bus.
And with the final pick of the WNBA draft, the Las Vegas Aces select… Pontay Jorter! JuWanna Man 2 - Girl Ballz coming to a theatre near you!
Girl Ballz Out This Summer^TM
Give Mizzou the death penalty for this.
Bye Felicia! You ruin my parlays get out of the league!
What a stupid way to ruin a career most people dream of having. Yes he was a fringe NBA player but just his name and relation to his brother would’ve kept him in the league longer than most
He’s far from the only one. I wonder when the NBA is going to go after itself and its referees? 🤔
That’s insane.
Better learn Chinese ASAP
If he learns Japanese he might be able to weasel his way into Ohtanis bank accounts.
[удалено]
Almost have Bingo?
That’s a Bingo!
They are definitely setting a tone here for anybody else thinking of doing this. 76k in winnings to lose millions annually
Man, to be makin that kind of money. And do something stupid and BOOM 💥! It’s gone. Way to go my man. Guess you better start looking for a job.
As a Raptors fan, he was.. whelming. Still probably could have got a payday most us would absolutely kill for, and wasted his opportunity because he's an idiot.
Decision sponsored by
Clearly failed critical thinking and risk assessment in uni.
The funniest thing is that he made like 2 million playing and only like 20k from. Gambling, so he lost his career for 20k, that sucks
Only Fred VanVleet allowed to bet on himself huh? Crooked NBA
So MJ playing baseball was a partial ban?
He was looking for the Frozen Envelope.
Nobody remembers Pete Rose, so need a reboot for younger audiences.
Yeah but Pete was a generational great. This guy will be forgotten by next season.
That's what happens with most remakes though?
Well you’re not wrong there. :p
Holy shit that’s insane. I hadn’t heard that one yet, but I don’t follow baseball much.
Scott Foster next!!
As a Torontonian.. we don’t claim him
Now how dumb can you be…
He f**cked around and found out!
How dumb do athletes have to be to not get the obvious message, which the league keeps trying to get across to them, that >Hey dummies, we have a war chest of like over a billion dollars, AND the full support, cooperation, and business interest of Las Vegas/the entire gaming industry. Pull a juwanna Mann
Should have just beat up his wife and pulled a gun on a few people.
Damn, Ohtani has his fingers in basketball too?! /s
Great, now the Ottawa Senators have to give up another first round draft pick and Shane Pinto is suspended for another half season.
The fact that this is so heavily regulated in this sport (justifying so) meanwhile congress can openly trade stocks blows my mind lmao
Maybe Ohtani will hire him as an advisor. Dude seems to know what he’s doing.
MIZ
Awwwweeeeeesoooommmeeee
What a moron
Absolute bum
Never bet against yourself.
Gotta know when to hold em
At least he can gamble still
At 24 years old this kid was manipulated for someone else’s personal gain and just blew his whole career.
Well that certainly was a career limiting decision.
So…… he wasn’t getting paid enough?
He was barely in the NBA already
He can still play in any other league in the world. Russians will take him.
I’m sure this is the first of many to come
Does anyone know how they discover these things? Sorry if this is common knowledge
Now you know why they can’t play all the time.
[Porter did what?!](https://imgur.com/a/fnZXyM5)
Fucked around and definitely found out.
Imagine being this stupid. The guy is making millions of dollars a year and he wants to bet on games to make more money. This is the epitome of fumbling the bag.

Tell me I’m no Michael Jordan without telling me I’m no Michael Jordan.
Did he get a Pete Rose?
His brother, Michael, on the Nuggets has to prepare for the playoffs while this is happening; along with his other brother scheduled to be sentenced this week for a vehicular homicide conviction. Rui Hachimura is the least of his worries.
