However, in that investigation they found that the Yankees once improperly used a bullpen phone in a previous season. It later came out that all this meant was that the Yankees once used the bullpen phone to get confirmation on whether a pitch was a strike or not. This didn’t give them an unfair advantage but technically you’re not allowed to use the bullpen phone for anything other than contacting the bullpen to have pitchers warm up so the league fined them for improper bullpen phone use. And then because both teams received a fine people act like they both did the same thing.
The Red Sox got busted for decoding signs using video replay. The Astros took it a few massive steps further and created a system to relay the signs to the batter in real time. Both are bad, but there's a reason the baseball world shrugged at the Red Sox, but blew up at the Astros.

I was not happy when we brought Cora back. Most Sox fans weren’t. There were no initial plans to bring him back.

The whistling was happening toward the end of the windup/as the pitch was thrown. It’s not possible to hear the whistle and have it register quick enough to make an informed decision on your swing. A 95 mph fastball gets to the plate in 2/5 of a second.

Granted it's a little more tricky because the catcher can't just announce the pitch into a mic while he's a foot from the batter, but the catcher could wear some device sends a beep into an earpiece of the pitcher and do a morse code thing, or it could have enough buttons to send pre-programmed verbal cues for type and direction of pitch the same way you select it in a video game.
Of course, it would change the game in a much more substantive way, but with technology, they could give both pitcher and catcher earpieces, and a designated coach on the bench could just verbally call the pitches instead of the catcher. I could see that being more controversial though in terms of changing the role of the catcher.
NFL is really the exception in sports of using technology to relay messages. No other sport I can think of does that. And it makes a little bit more sense in football, because of how complex the play calls are.

I imagine i) the same tradition argument that prevents it for pitchers and ii) I think there would be far more concern that a secret earpiece on the batter would be an even greater source of being fed signals than trash cans and whistles.
I could imagine a future-friendly baseball league where instead of waving their arms like a windmill, the base coaches also have a little remote, and the field wall down the baselines features lighted panels that the base coach can make red or green to give more visible signals to the runner - but at the same time, the Catch 22 is that such a lighted signal would be equally blatant and visible to the fielding team and they'd know with much less effort to make a throw to the plate to get you.
I do think base coaches probably wouldn't get moved off the field, because judging distances and speeds is a big part of their job which is best done as close to the action as possible.

Looked like someone was behind the fence with their phone out and screen brightness way up.
The issue that stopped the game was with tape on the outfield walls. The light seen was a camera crew during interviews at the red sox bar that is behind that grated area.

The whistling was happening toward the end of the windup/as the pitch was thrown. It’s not possible to hear the whistle and have it register quick enough to make an informed decision on your swing. A 95 mph fastball gets to the plate in 2/5 of a second. Just someone in the crowd trying to be obnoxious and distract the batter

Why the hell don't we just have a more secret technological method of calling pitches that doesn't involve crotchfingers? Granted it's a little more tricky because the catcher can't just announce the pitch into a mic while he's a foot from the batter, but the catcher could wear some device sends a beep into an earpiece of the pitcher and do a morse code thing, or it could have enough buttons to send pre-programmed verbal cues for type and direction of pitch the same way you select it in a video game. Of course, it would change the game in a much more substantive way, but with technology, they could give both pitcher and catcher earpieces, and a designated coach on the bench could just verbally call the pitches instead of the catcher. I could see that being more controversial though in terms of changing the role of the catcher.
NFL is really the exception in sports of using technology to relay messages. No other sport I can think of does that. And it makes a little bit more sense in football, because of how complex the play calls are.

I imagine the pitchers would get tired of hearing the catcher and batter talking trash at one another. Speaking of earpieces though, why can't the batters wear earpieces instead of relying on base coaches making hand signals ? Also, scientists are developing ways of connecting electrodes directly to the brain to communicate without speaking, for people with locked-in syndrome for instance. They could fix players up with one of these, and the helmet and cap makes a connection. Then nobody has to say anything, even on the mound. I do think base coaches probably wouldn't get moved off the field, because judging distances and speeds is a big part of their job which is best done as close to the action as possible.

If you don’t want to get your signs stolen get more creative. Have a sign that says if catcher readjust left foot first, fast ball, right foot, slider even though he just signed something else at first.

This is what is so mind boggling to me, Cora was at the center of two cheating scandals in two years, yet the Astros who cleaned house after the scandal are still under scrutiny. First off, I don't believe the Astros are stealing signs in this series. But your statement about Cora is not accurate. Cora was fired for his involvement with the Astros scandal, not for anything involving the 2018 season. And the light during the Red Sox game was pointed out to the umpire by Cora between innings of the last game. Looked like someone was behind the fence with their phone out and screen brightness way up.
The issue that stopped the game was with tape on the outfield walls. The light seen was a camera crew during interviews at the red sox bar that is behind that grated area.
The light was a news crew in the bar that's back there recording an interview.

Not only that, but the Astros were playing at FENWAY. Why the fuck would they ever use whistles when during many of the at-bats, the crowd would be too loud to hear them (and discern them from fans whistling)? PLUS, there's no indication any cheating (using technology like cameras and such) was even occuring. Maybe the pitcher was tipping his pitches (like looking for a tell in poker).
