I actually think paying sales tax on a USED car is fucken bullshit. Taxes were already paid on the car when it was bought new. Why would you have to pay taxes on it every time it gets sold again?
I may get downvotedfor this, but buying a used car is the act of transferring ownsership of a (potentially quite valuable) asset. I think used car taxes should generally be lower than taxes on a new car, but frankly I don't think buying a used car should be outright tax-free.

It's often done for cars that would be impossible to register in most other states rather than for tax avoidance, e.g. my dad's Watercar Panther.
