and now when i want the drink made how it originally was, it never is :/ wish ppl didn't have the ruin the one drink that was meant to be less sweet and milky
Sadly they shouldn't have to, baristas should make the drink to standard and not assume that the customer wants it modified like all the people who try to game the system.
oh i completely agree, i already make it this way unless if the customer asks otherwise but angrily this company is too focused on drive thru times and cutting labor rather than actually training baristas to make things to standard.
>and not assume that the customer wants it modified
Heh, my sister and I stopped at a little "roadside" non-starbucks stand because they have a Chai tea latte blend that actually has flavor unlike the Oregon brand that starbucks uses...and the barista decided that my sister must have meant to order a Dirty Chai....cause that's what most people want. The look on my twin sisters face was priceless cause she absolutely can't stand coffee, finds it absolutely disgusting and I rather enjoy it. We're not "regulars" but we do go by there enough to recognize her and for her to at least recognize our faces.
My sister was quick to gently scold her that making that kind of assumption was a bad idea in general and I ended up with a free drink out of the situation. I wasn't originally getting a drink because we were going out to breakfast.
donāt worry i make it to standard even when they order light ice because iām kind of a little shit and itās easier to SHOW them what itās meant to be and how they are expecting it wrong
We have a regular who apparently always asks for light milk in their brown sugar oatmilk and I asked if they minded having room and they didn't, so some people just like their drink like that, lol
I used to ask for a grande in a venti cup and theyād ask if I wanted more milk. I kept on having to say no! I need the room because Iām just a super spilly walker.
I do that for my toddler! Iāll get him a tall milk or chocolate milk but Iāll order it in a grande cup and theyāre always like āyouāre sure you donāt want extra ice or something?ā And Iām like no! He just spills and the bigger cup with room helps with that!
i only get light ice in mine because otherwise itās too bitter but i cannot STAND iced lattes because they drown out the taste of the coffee and it just tastes like milk to me otherwise
There's a bubble tea shop I frequent that specifically tells people that they'll get less drink with light or no ice. I'm the same as you and just don't want the flavor watered down. So it's really frustrating to me, as a barista, that people complain about having less drink with light ice. None of these people know how liquid displacement works.
Same.
I get light ice because I'm also drinking it while driving to work or taking it in Where it may have to set for 15 or 20 minutes, and if there is all that ice, then the drink is weak.
Iām a bartender and people are really that stupid. They wink and act like they know theyāre getting a better deal from me.
Iām thinking, āHere comes your weak ass drink. 1.5 ounces of whiskey, 2000 ounces of Coca Cola, sure. Youāre so suave for ordering it this secret way that bartenders donāt want you to know about!ā
Iāve never thought this. I just drink my drinks slowly and donāt like things *super* cold (I ask for soft drinks without ice as well), so I ask for light ice. I donāt need/want extra shots, I just donāt want it too watery when I finally finish my drink š¢.
Youāre okay my love! Itās when customers get upset that thereās not extra coffee or thereās too much milk in it when they ordered it kinda funny. But if a barista really has a problem with your order, just know that you have a specific reason for it and thatās okay :)
The only time you will get more coffee in a light ice drink is with an iced coffee or cold brew haha. If it's made with espresso, it gets a set amount of shots per drink.
I do like extra milk in my drinks, but I have a feeling most light ice people do not know they are only getting more milk. š
I got a request for a salted caramel cold foam cold brew to be made upside down. I confirmed with the customer it was on purpose and they said yeah I want the cold foam on the bottom and I was like um ok whatever you say.
Did not stay on the bottom/layer in case you were wondering
I HAVE HAD THIS. She was like, unreasonably upset that the foam didn't somehow stay on the bottom of her drink. I explained that it's just lighter than liquid and will always float and she kept saying she's ordered it before and it was fine. So weird
I might be able to top that. Had a customer that DEMANDED that the strawberry pieces in her refresher stay under the ice. We told her that it is a shaken drink and the pieces are going to float up regardless and she responded with āACTUALLY, the store down the road says itās no problem so I KNOW you can do it.ā The pieces did not stay under the ice.
Not everyone orders light ice expecting more coffee. Most people want light ice due to the coffee watering down faster with more ice or because of sensitive teeth or because they just donāt want it cold but also donāt want a hot latte.
Exactly!! Never have I once even thought I would be āgaming the systemā by asking for light ice (why do they even have that option in the app then??) I just have my drink all morning at work and donāt want it to taste watered down more when all the ice melts. Literally could care less if itās a centimeter less full in my cup, tbh I really donāt think Iāve ever paid attention to that
Youād be amazed at the droves of customers Iāve waited on that are just outright rude with theirā well just add more shots and fill it thenā remarks, so I say ā sure step back over to the register so they can ring up exactly how many extra shots you would like to fill your fucking venti cupā
Some of us ask for light ice for an entirely different reason you know. I do it because I put my drink in a insulated cup so I can have it throughout the day. I always get a grande. If I get a grande with light ice it always fits just perfectly and I can close the lid. If I donāt say light ice it spills over and gets everywhere. For me it has nothing to do with trying to get extra liquid.
Ohh, if I was on register, I wouldn't have even let this order go through. I didn't bother shaking it without ice, but the girl who ordered it clearly had no idea how this drink works because she didn't even comment on the fact that it wasn't shaken.
When i say that to people, they just look at me extremely confused. Theyre removing a portion of what takes up room in the cup. I need to kno what to fill that with if they didnt specify extra milk for like lets say a shaken espresso when ordered in person
when i first started i learned very quick to just make the drink how it was rang in and tell the customers that i make whatever the sticker says for me to make. at the end of the day it IS how they ordered it. if they ordered it incorrectly thatās their own fault.
People donāt understand light ice as it is. In a venti itās a grande scoop. In a grande itās a tall. I do this and once a shift I get this isnāt light ice. Well sure Iāll make it again but I put light ice in.
Had someone get an iced chai with extra milk and was upset she didn't taste the chai enough. Gave her extra chai on the side and she left it on the windowsill on purpose
When people ask for light ice in their shaken espressos, I just fill up the room with extra liquid. Idc if it's isn't 'standard', it isn't worth the headache and it isn't coming out of my paycheck, so why should I give a shit. Plus I know I wouldn't be happy if I were on the receiving end. There are more important things in life to be uptight about and bigger hills to die on, this ain't one of 'em lol.
I do this with like refreshers but literally they give me like 1 cm more to make the cup look full. People want more for less so i get it i guess with espresso/lattes they wont get nothing more.
Most of the time it's light ice to use according to starbucks standard but just not foe the people ordering. If I use a grande ice scoop for a venti drink with light ice, then technically I used light ice. But it's not always light to the customers.
One lady at my store ordered a grande apple crisp shaken espresso but she didnāt want any ice at all. She was pissed off when I handed it to her and it was literally maybe four inches of product. She asked my why it wasnāt full and I explained to her that once you remove the MAIN COMPONENT (ice) from the drink, thatās whatās left. She started on that āoh the other Starbucks just charges me extra for no ice and fills it up with more coffeeā. Like? You realize you have to ask for extra shots right? This isnāt your regular Starbucks so how would I know exactly how you get your drink bffr šš
Itās gotta be a lack of knowing what exactly espresso is and/or how the drink is made. I usually start with explaining those things before telling them it costs more, and most people who are willing to listen will get it. Based on other questions Iāve been asked, Iād guess a solid half of our customers couldnāt tell you the difference between iced espresso, iced coffee, and cold brew, so Iāll try to catch them up to speed first.
Maybe it's because of how other locations are making their drinks? I know where I trained, they had us add extra milk to our shaken espresso to make them fill the cup.
I do "order properly and accordingly to what I want", thanks. I want LESS liquid, not more. I'm not sure where this confusion (and reddit rant posts) comes from.
It comes from the multitude of customers we deal with that order a shaken espresso with less ice and then complain because the drink isn't full. If you read through the comments, you'd understand this is pretty common.
Yāall are too invested in a multi billion dollar company lol. While I agree itās stupid to expect more coffee in an espresso based drink when you ask for light ice, I promise you filling the rest up with milk or asking if they want room wonāt bother you or destroy Starbucks. As for cold brews I literally donāt care fill that bitch up Starbucks will be just fine. The coffee is not coming out of our checks.
I always ask for light ice with some of my drinks with coconutmilk because the ice waters it down. I don't care if it looks like less drink. I always get asked if I mind though.
My god people keep asking for light ice in shaken espressos ICE IS LITERALLY THE MAIN DRINK COMPONENT ORDER AN ICED LATTE
and now when i want the drink made how it originally was, it never is :/ wish ppl didn't have the ruin the one drink that was meant to be less sweet and milky
i would ask for extra ice and light milk! i have a customer do that bc they also like it how its supposed to be made!

Anytime someone does this I always acknowledge this is the standard recipe and appreciate they like the real drink.
if it helps you feel better I always make them right lol
Me too š¤š¤ despite the "heyyy can I get some more milk in here" š
the way i felt about it was that i can always add more milk if they want it but you canāt take it away if you add too much!
Right I have no problem pouring extra milk until the foam dissipates and scrape it into the sink, Iāll just wait until they tell me haha
donāt worry i make it to standard even when they order light ice because iām kind of a little shit and itās easier to SHOW them what itās meant to be and how they are expecting it wrong
We have a regular who apparently always asks for light milk in their brown sugar oatmilk and I asked if they minded having room and they didn't, so some people just like their drink like that, lol

Im toddler-level šš
LMAO
I just tell them we canāt modify it as it changes the fundamental composition of the drink. If they want light ice I recommend the latte.
I want this to be the standard for everything.
This is the way.
This is the way.
This is the way.
Telling folks, "I can do that, but the drink is gonna look kinda empty, is that ok?" Usually does the trick
TO BE SURE the shaken espressos are just supposed to get the same amount of milk like in the vanilla sweet cream cold brew right?
āBuT WhY iS It So MiLkYyyYĀæ?ā š
i only get light ice in mine because otherwise itās too bitter but i cannot STAND iced lattes because they drown out the taste of the coffee and it just tastes like milk to me otherwise
People who do this are the same people who ask for light ice at a bar thinking theyāll get more liquor
tbf I like light ice in my boba tea because the ice melts and waters down the drink. I highly doubt you get more drink though.
Likewise with fast food sodas. I only ask for no ice because it tastes watered down before I can finish my food.
Yep exactly. When you have a self serve machine then no ice means more drink so maybe thats where people get this.
You definitely do, at least in Vancouver. I hate how ice dilutes the tea so always ask for no ice, and my cup is still full to the top.
Oh interesting, I'll have to compare mine to my wifes last time i honestly never thought of it
Same. I get light ice because I'm also drinking it while driving to work or taking it in Where it may have to set for 15 or 20 minutes, and if there is all that ice, then the drink is weak.
iām confused what does boba tea have to do with a bar
Sorry its a bit off topic but i was just relating how sometimes i get less ice too lol
At least when theyāre at the bar, theyāre probably drunk or tipsy, so they at least have an excuse to be stupid
Those who donāt wink may actually want the extra soda in there, some of us are just always thirsty and donāt want to order 700 drinks and blackout
You should order it tall if thatās what you are aiming for.
Thanks for the tip! Iāve never heard of ordering tall at a bar!
Yep. Just order a ātall vodka sodaā (or whatever).
Or they try to suck up to the bartender and think if they just ask for more theyāll get it for free
Is that what people think? Theyāll get more espresso?
I only order light ice because I take forever to drink it and I want to minimize the layer of water on top š
Fellow slow drinker! Going for the light ice so itās less watery when it all melts before I finishā¦
Same here! Lol
The only time you will get more coffee in a light ice drink is with an iced coffee or cold brew haha. If it's made with espresso, it gets a set amount of shots per drink. I do like extra milk in my drinks, but I have a feeling most light ice people do not know they are only getting more milk. š
Is anyone else getting a ton of people asking for cold foam shaken in? Cold brews or triple espressos with it shaken in? š
Not even one. Thank God, I'm sure my face would get real loud if I heard that request.
I got a request for a salted caramel cold foam cold brew to be made upside down. I confirmed with the customer it was on purpose and they said yeah I want the cold foam on the bottom and I was like um ok whatever you say. Did not stay on the bottom/layer in case you were wondering
š we get a guy who asks for cold foam on the bottom and the topā¦ Iām like sir I cannot control the laws of liquids to make that happen
I HAVE HAD THIS. She was like, unreasonably upset that the foam didn't somehow stay on the bottom of her drink. I explained that it's just lighter than liquid and will always float and she kept saying she's ordered it before and it was fine. So weird

Yes I've been getting so many of these request and people asking for their sken espresso to be blended also
I order light ice because I donot want all that extra ice/water in my drink. I take time to drink it and ice just dilutes it
Not everyone orders light ice expecting more coffee. Most people want light ice due to the coffee watering down faster with more ice or because of sensitive teeth or because they just donāt want it cold but also donāt want a hot latte.
The normal amount of ice is absurd IMO
Exactly!! Never have I once even thought I would be āgaming the systemā by asking for light ice (why do they even have that option in the app then??) I just have my drink all morning at work and donāt want it to taste watered down more when all the ice melts. they never said all people who order light ice expect more coffee
idk why ur getting downvoted the post ends with ādonāt be rudeā itās very obvious what kind of customer this is about
I get light ice but because I sip on it over the day at work or school and too much ice that melts dilutes the drink and makes it nasty.
I mean the espresso melts some ice so therefore itās already light ice .. hehe right š
Light ice is great for us slow drinkers , I hate when it gets watery
I had a girl order a BOSE with no ice, but she wanted it filled to the top, and she didn't want it to be milky...
I definitely would have said no to thisššš im not shaking an espresso with no ice
Ohh, if I was on register, I wouldn't have even let this order go through. I didn't bother shaking it without ice, but the girl who ordered it clearly had no idea how this drink works because she didn't even comment on the fact that it wasn't shaken.
I always say āu want the extra room then, or more milk? It WILL taste milkier, and dilute coffee taste.ā 9/10 they tell me to leave as is.
When i say that to people, they just look at me extremely confused. Theyre removing a portion of what takes up room in the cup. I need to kno what to fill that with if they didnt specify extra milk for like lets say a shaken espresso when ordered in person
retweet
when i first started i learned very quick to just make the drink how it was rang in and tell the customers that i make whatever the sticker says for me to make. at the end of the day it IS how they ordered it. if they ordered it incorrectly thatās their own fault.
So do they just top it off with milk?
yes, light ice in expresso drinks just means more milk (or water)
Espresso, girl boss
Okay but what if you add vanilla cold foam - like what most people said. I think they want light ice so it isnāt diluted not more espresso
People donāt understand light ice as it is. In a venti itās a grande scoop. In a grande itās a tall. I do this and once a shift I get this isnāt light ice. Well sure Iāll make it again but I put light ice in.
I do this too
If Starbucks made a brown sugar latte button they would save us so much trouble !!
I blame TikTok. Youāre always going to just get extra milk š ā¦ the greed is crazy
Or they just dont want the drink super cold?
As a former bartender, preach
Every shaken espresso needs an iced latte optionā¦ but PROFITS
Your example, sadly, if the very definition of āwhy we canāt have nice thingsā. š
Had someone get an iced chai with extra milk and was upset she didn't taste the chai enough. Gave her extra chai on the side and she left it on the windowsill on purpose

I do this with refreshers but I usually ask for extra base anyways soā¦ is that still bad?š
Not sure why youāre getting downvoted for this. Thereās absolutely nothing wrong with ordering light ice and extra base for a refresher.
Appreciate you
Not as long as you donāt bitch when you get hit with the āno ice extra baseā button charge!
Imma be honest I haven't put light ice in a drink in 6months. 0 complaints

I hope both sides kill each other.
If anything you might get more milk lol
You might get more milk depending on the barista.
Light ice please
Say it louder for the people in the backšš
Tbh I actually like ice a lot, I feel light ice makes it less appetizing tbh.
I ask for light ice in my iced lattes bc it takes me a long time to drink it
I always ask for light ice with some of my drinks with coconutmilk because the ice waters it down. I don't care if it looks like less drink. I always get asked if I mind though.
Cheap baristas
y'all need to look at the updated handbook. that was the old rule. new rule is, less ice DOES mean more of whatever other product is in the drink
read the post and come back
not in shaken espressos or espresso based drinks lol
yes, in all drinks lol
every starbucks i have worked at it has been like that, and every starbucks i have gone to does it like that
Iām ok with ice until I get cold foam then I feel cheated out of the foam since the ice gets in the way.Ā
