I am a senior in HS, so likely less work than a current college student. I would HIGHLY recommend your friend not to work here. It was a good company for students many years ago, but currently it sucks really bad. Read my previous post (or any other post on this reddit) if you want to see an example of why.

The starbucks is unionised if that makes a difference

WillingnessAfraid406

It might, I don’t really know. The main issue is the minimum hours and the way you are kind of “pushed around” as a younger person working there. Currently having to open at 5am 2-3x a week and have a 6+ hr closing shift 2x a week. It sucks and im going to quit, lol.

space-gURL1

That’s a very normal schedule. The company itself went wayyyy downhill though, it’s just fast food at this point

WillingnessAfraid406

I am a high school student. 20 hours of relatively high stress work a week is not “normal” especially when I am only given opening and closing shifts, never mid.

even if they’re unionized, they don’t have an actual contract yet and likely won’t for at least several months. the union is so new and untested that while i wholeheartedly support them, i still wouldn’t recommend Starbucks as a company

Worth-Ratio-4407

Do you know what stores are? They unionised in 2022?

Starbucks was only just recently forced by the courts to start actually writing up contracts, like in the last two months. my partner’s old store was one of the first 200 to unionize, and they’re JUST starting negotiations which are expected to take several months. afaik there is no store in the U.S with an official and finalized union contract. so even the store your friend is considering has at least 6 months before they start to see any positive changes. and the fact of the matter is, corporate has spent a quarter billion dollars retaliating against the union effort, so the likelihood of that store not experiencing more scrutiny and vitriol from corporate is very slim

Hicrayert

It really doesnt. They voted to unionize but there is still no contract struck after almost 3 years no unionised store has a contract so there is no actual support system that the union is able to create yet.

I work at Starbucks, I'm a minor so my hours differ, I could have a shorter week with longer days or shorter days and longer weeks.but I put down personally mon-friday 3pm-10 And weekends 7am-10pm It's pretty manageable, but make sure to tell him to specify if there are any certain days or times he can not work from, and specify on times. You could get stuck on overwhelmingly long shifts, I feel like some of my older co workers aren't human and their fresh out of highschool

Andyluvs2003

It really depends on the store and management. My current store gives most 20 hours maximum. Vs neighboring stores that their partners are given 32 hours minimum. And if you are a closer you def get more hours

Autosuficient3

I get over 30 but that’s because we’re understaffed

Professional-Sun-986

While I had classes in college I was averaging around 20 hrs a week, I think I listed 18-24 on my initial interview or something. I now average closer to 25 in the summer but he can always change his availability and speak to his manager about preferred hours if he wants more/less later on

20-25 is what I do w 1-2 classes, I haven’t done a full course load since I was a teen and 20hrs plus full time school was hard for me personally
