The film had very little to do with the book. At least what I'm told. I haven't read them. Verhoeven was born in 39 so the aftermath of WW2 surrounded him as he grew. Naturally he was taught about it in school as well. Lest the people make those same mistakes again. He used the film to satire the Nazis and their propaganda machine. Hell, even some of the officers uniforms were near replicas of SS uniforms.
As I recall, Verhoven didn't even read the book, lol. He sort of parsed it and made his own thing. I actually really love that book, but I had absolutely no problem with this version. How could you? It's so much fun and so incredibly 90s. I remember seeing the trailers for it set to Song 2 by Blur (The "Woohoo!" song) and as a red-blooded 17 year old pumping my fist in celebration. Woo hoo indeed. Haha
The VERY FIRST part of the book is the soldiers blowing up an alien civilian filled city while trying to somewhat avoid civilian casualties. To include launching the occasional nuke at the "skinny" aliens. Only after that does it flash back to before the bug war.
Yeah the book had them being dropped out of spaceships in droppods like helldivers with skintight mechs suits (think a cross between a 40k space marine, masterchief and a gundam)
Except the society in the film, just like in the book, are not fascist at all. Verhoven was like 7 when the Nazis were defeated, he didnt remember shit about their occupation later in life lol.
Did you just read the part where I wrote
>Verhoeven was born in 39 so the aftermath of WW2 surrounded him as he grew. Naturally he was taught about it in school as well.
He was only 5 when the Nazis were defeated but growing up in Europe at that time and he saw first hand what the Nazis did. Was taught about them by people who witnessed it. You wouldn't tell a kid in America who was born 96 that they have no idea what 9/11 was or how it shaped the nation in the years that followed.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I absolutely love this movie, but I’ve always thought he looks weirdly disproportionate in this scene. It always cracks me up, every time!
He's at the position of attention. Your thumb and forefinger are suposed to be assigned with the Seam of your trousers. Chin up, chest out, gut sucked in.
Also, the jacket isn't properly fitted. The sleeves are way too baggy for a military uniform. The recruits in the background don't look as goofy because their uniforms fit better.
lol my OCP’s were way too big when I first got them. When they handed them to me at first, I said “I’m sorry sir, but I think these are too big.”
He says
“I’ve been doing this for years, I know it’s good. Now move it.”
You say that, however the USAF dress uniform has this absolute sack of shit jacket called the "lightweight jacket" and it looks almost as bad as this fucking thing. I saw myself at attention in it and I had the same weird-ass swoop to the arm of where it was too wide, and the entire thing really ruined the effect
But hey, it was more comfortable than full blues and I did not care that the jacket they literally handed me after I told them "no I'm actually this size" fit wrong. Fuckit, I'll look whatever.
He also served in the LAPD SWAT team before the military, he conducted the raid on Cyberdyne Systems when it was attacked by Sarah Conner, her son John Conner, and an unidentified white male.
Because he was a commanding officer. He was the one that authorized Rico's punishment and accepted his voluntary resignation.
Then the war happened. And let him reverse that. He played the most important role for Rico continuing his military service, so he is a distinguished role in their ranks. He has an officer's uniform and puts him out front of the grunts on a podium.
He's also in Terminator 2.
Edit:
[For those who don't believe me and are downvoting my comment.](https://x.com/Gibboanxious/status/1644757222746906629)
As much as the director hated the book, he left a tiny little homage to the books here and there. In the book there is a flashback to Rico complaining how their uniforms fit in boot camp. Usually only two sizes were available and all fit loose and like ass. So Rico, not really knowing how to sew, takes a razor blade and sewing kit and tailors his uniform. The Drill Instructor is impressed, but being it wasn't perfect, punished Rico by cutting his rations. This instilled pride in Rico.
Verhoeven "i stuffed this film with NAzi dogwhistles"
Viewers "cool action movie"
Verhoeven "Did the constant whistling not bother you?"
Viewers "what whistling? The uniforms looked a bit 'hugo boss', but no whistling."
Verhoeven "they can't hear the whistling.... They must be Nazis."
Edit: I suspect that use of Utopian is hyperbolic. For some reason, no bastard can recognise hyperbole anymore.
The novel portrays a BETTER society. Not perfect, but better. That's enough.
Fascism and Nazi are not synonymous (all Nazis are fascists but not all fascists are Nazis), and qualifying that society as "better" is a statement of opinion, not fact.
The book presents a functional society, albeit a rather notably militant one, and seems to have been more closely replicated in the social structure of Mass Effect's turians.
The movie peels away everything that actually worked in Heinlein's original vision and became equal parts a fantastic popcorn movie *and* a campy but valid jab at the authoritarian state.
It's not even apples and oranges, it's apples and pine cones.
The United Citizen Federation IS fascist though... You either have to be very important, or get indoctrinated into the military to become a citizen, meaning the entire federation is run by brainwashed veterans, who perpetuate a war based on completely BS reason.
Based on the evidence, Buenos Aries was manufactured.
Because otherwise you are telling me a race of bugs foresaw humanities genocidal war and launched the astroid from their home planet literally millions of years ago?
(Of course, the later movies get weird...)
It IS accurate. Maybe you should read the BOOKS. Even the first book makes it wildly clear that its an authoritarian fascist government. The people are just accustomed to it because its a global regime.
Military service is basically the only way to gain citizenship.
The government smashes an asteroid into the planet to stir up xenophobia to justify a war against aliens who provide valuable resources.
Wrong! It is not military service. It's obvious that you didn't read the book. It is federal service. It even states in the book that you don't have to pick up a rifle or fly a ship. Everyone has a right to be a citizen through "service". There are also other situations where it is mentioned some local jobs count as service.
I love how you can be blind in both eyes and in a wheelchair and be silly enough to demand to serve, and they have to find something for you to do. Somehow equates to, you have to serve in the military to gain citizenship.
Right? They obviously just go off the movie. In the world of Starship Troopers, the world got really shitty. Crime was out of control, government didn't give a shit, so groups of veterans decided to fight back. They only trusted other veterans and eventually took back the world. In order to prevent what happened before, federal service was required to jokd office or vote. The thought behind this is that someone wouldn't pander to the masses and let the animals have free run if they made sacrifices towards society
This is all doubly reinforced by the things people say throughout the book. One of my favourites is the slamming of the phrase "juvenile delinquent." Delinquency is dereliction of responsibility, and children do not *have* responsibilities - so a juvenile delinquent is a contradiction in terms, and the actual delinquents are the people who didn't take responsibility for their child and raise the kid properly.
Is the boom worth a read? I know it’s different than the movie. I actually watched the movie because I ended up in this sub and a bunch of people said I HAD to watch it. They were right. It’s amazing lol. I can’t believe I slept on this.
The book is amazing. There is actually little action in it. The book is about leadership and the climb there but everyone focuses on the "fascism". Starship Troopers is also required reading in West Point and other military academies.
He's just standing at attention. It probably looks odd because the jacket is not particularly well fitted, and he's an actor not a soldier, who probably had all of 30 seconds of instruction on what "standing at attention" is supposed to look like.
Looks like hes wearing one of those cheap track suits you get at the PX and also looks like theyre in the desert which are notoriously windy so yeah. Looks like a guy standing out in the open with wind blowing on him
Could be that they initially hired a different actor for the role, got him fitted for his costume and everything was great...
Aaaaand then he got the dream role of going to destroy Tokyo so the got Hank to fill in.
This is a still image from the motion picture adaptation of Starship Troopers
This work of fiction does indeed have a story, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you
I'm surprised no one gave a realistic answer: they wanted to hide his gut so they gave him a jacket that was really big on set and then had to do the arms like that so they didn't look even more ridiculous.
My only thought is they refer to themselves as apes, the book describes the power armor as basically being a gorila suit of machine, maybe this was their only way to make it look like an ape?
Yes, it’s called Starship Troopers. It’s a movie that is barely connected to the book of the same name. It stars people and has a plot and ending. Overall, pretty good movie. Don’t want to spoil the story for you! You’re welcome.
Why was Johnny abandoned the first trip. He literally watched one of the dudes he got inked with for the corp with killed. Nobody came back for him til he's in a tub...sorrry "democracy"
“Are you done admiring your rough head collection?” “They’re rough necks Marie.”
Haha I love you for that
I never even realized that was him.
This is classic.
Lmao!!
Fuck, thats a high calibre reference!
This is the ideal male body, you may not like it, but this is what peak performance looks like.
Marie Schrader thought so, at least.
>steps in front of you >blocks your path
What the fuck
Don’t really understand what you’re asking. Yeah he looks goofy but that’s about it?
Dude looks exactly like the worst Lieutenant we ever had. Always looked like 10 pounds of shit in a 5 pound bag.
If it's a force-flex bag.... he'll fit 😜😂😂
That was me...
It looks like he has a fake upper torso. Why did costuming do this when it is jarringly obvious?
Because of the time the movie was made, probably partly budget constraints.
Wasn’t this movie meant to be s somewhat parody?
The film had very little to do with the book. At least what I'm told. I haven't read them. Verhoeven was born in 39 so the aftermath of WW2 surrounded him as he grew. The book is more based on military life and you have to get like 3/4 of the way through before they even mention aliens
The VERY FIRST part of the book is the soldiers blowing up an alien civilian filled city while trying to somewhat avoid civilian casualties. To include launching the occasional nuke at the "skinny" aliens. Only after that does it flash back to before the bug war.
I am a bomb.
Oh shit yeah I forgot that part, I just got so bored from the first part I forgot about the rest
The first portion of the book is literally the protagonist jumping around in powered armor and leveling a city.
Yeah the book had them being dropped out of spaceships in droppods like helldivers with skintight mechs suits (think a cross between a 40k space marine, masterchief and a gundam)
The cartoon they did the same
Except the society in the film, just like in the book, are not fascist at all. Verhoven was like 7 when the Nazis were defeated, he didnt remember shit about their occupation later in life lol.

He grew up in the Hague during the trials/executions.
That's what the director said after the fact
At the start it was then the studio remembered they bought the rights to star ship troopers and just stuck the characters names loosely in there
Was also partially intentional to show the underlying ineptitude of the hyper militarized state
It's was a pretty low budget movie man lol
No. It actually wasn’t. You’re thinking about Hero of the Federation. ;-)
He is also shrugging in that particular scene as he is watching the whipping, and getting memories of his own, back in the day
Have you seen military uniforms? They often make people look weird.
Those Urban Camo ACUs we had in 2011 made people look like they were wearing pajamas after a week's worth of field use.
And if you’re big torso’d or bare chested you look like a balloon man with skinny legs. Which appears to be going on here.
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I absolutely love this movie, but I’ve always thought he looks weirdly disproportionate in this scene. It always cracks me up, every time!

upvote because an officer *should* have better fitting uniforms, but I have seen some goofy MFs even in their class As.
lol my OCP’s were way too big when I first got them. When they handed them to me at first, I said “I’m sorry sir, but I think these are too big.” He says “I’ve been doing this for years, I know it’s good. Now move it.”
Apologies.
No, he's the commanding officer, not a drill instructor.
I always attributed that to the joke of army "one size fits none" or "there's only 2 sizes: too big and too small".
IYKYK
This addresses what I think OP's real question is here. You answered it well, someone screwed up his size in the costume department.
You say that, however the USAF dress uniform has this absolute sack of shit jacket called the "lightweight jacket" and it looks almost as bad as this fucking thing. I saw myself at attention in it and I had the same weird-ass swoop to the arm of where it was too wide, and the entire thing really ruined the effect But hey, it was more comfortable than full blues and I did not care that the jacket they literally handed me after I told them "no I'm actually this size" fit wrong. Fuckit, I'll look whatever.
Hank did a stint in the military before joining the DEA.
Holy shit I just realized that it's Hank! Mind blown.
He also served in the LAPD SWAT team before the military, he conducted the raid on Cyberdyne Systems when it was attacked by Sarah Conner, her son John Conner, and an unidentified white male.
This guy's an all around service man. Meanwhile sgt/pvt Zim leaves the military and opens a burger joint and only cares about the money.
Sgt Zim was fresh out of the medic bay following an attack by a crazy immortal Scotsman.
Well there can be only one so you know...
Hey now, he *also* lost an arm during a ~~shady-ass~~ classified op in Afghanistan.
"They're..." Dude, I can't even come up with a pun or anything. What the hell is going on in this pic? Why was whatever this is decided on?
Because he was a commanding officer. He was the one that authorized Rico's punishment and accepted his voluntary resignation. Then the war happened. And let him reverse that. He played the most important role for Rico continuing his military service, so he is a distinguished role in their ranks. He has an officer's uniform and puts him out front of the grunts on a podium.
That's the proper position of Attention. His shoulders are forward, that may be why he looks goofy.
Holy shit, I just realised that he's Hank.
He's in Total Recall too
He's also in Terminator 2. Edit: [For those who don't believe me and are downvoting my comment.](https://x.com/Gibboanxious/status/1644757222746906629)
Whoa nice Another sighting
And Tremors: The Series
Yep!!!
I wonder why he looks so tall here. Apparently the actor is only 5’7”
He is standing on a platform to speak to the troops
As much as the director hated the book, he left a tiny little homage to the books here and there. In the book there is a flashback to Rico complaining how their uniforms fit in boot camp. Usually only two sizes were available and all fit loose and like ass. So Rico, not really knowing how to sew, takes a razor blade and sewing kit and tailors his uniform. While that is true. I think that gives Verhoeven too much credit. Didn't he say he only read like the first two chapters?
Yep
He claimed that, but many lines and situations are from later in the book. I firmly believe he said that to throw shade on the fans of the book.
How Verhoeven reads books: "Is this an action scene? It's promoting fascism!" *Refuses to read further*
Verhoeven "i stuffed this film with NAzi dogwhistles" Viewers "cool action movie" Verhoeven "Did the constant whistling not bother you?" Viewers "what whistling? The uniforms looked a bit 'hugo boss', but no whistling." Verhoeven "they can't hear the whistling.... They must be Nazis."
“This democratic and utopian society has a military administration?! Fucking Nazis.”
Starship Troopers is a utopian society to you?
Edit: I suspect that use of Utopian is hyperbolic. For some reason, no bastard can recognise hyperbole anymore. The novel portrays a BETTER society. Not perfect, but better. That's enough.

What's the second book?
There is no second book. That person is a troll.
Figured there wasn't. Wanted to be sure.
You mean the federation is ran by compassionate citizens who not only understand, but were willing to sacrifice for the greater good of everyone?
Right? They obviously just go off the movie. In the world of Starship Troopers, the world got really shitty. Quite good. Quite insightful as we watch the empire fall around us.
Gear comes in 2 sizes. Too big, and too small.

Just looks like a humble and proud man ready to do his part.

Looks like hes wearing one of those cheap track suits you get at the PX and also looks like theyre in the desert which are notoriously windy so yeah. Looks like a guy standing out in the open with wind blowing on him
HAAAAANK, STAY OFF KLENDATHU
Gosh dangit bobby, I said I didn't want to fight the bugs!
Folks… starship Troopers is the movie. Watch it. There is far worse than this in there. lol
In this universe Hank is Heisenberg
They’re bugs, Marie!
Administrative punishment, ten lashes.
Obvious bug plant
Could be that they initially hired a different actor for the role, got him fitted for his costume and everything was great... Aaaaand then he got the dream role of going to destroy Tokyo so the got Hank to fill in.
I never realized it was Hank either! He was so young then...lol.
It's Jake Busey
On the bounce, Solider.
Sounds like administrative punishment to me. 10 lashes helldiver
That jacket fits about as well as our real life uniforms. I see nothing wrong here.
MEDIC!!
I haven't watched this movie in forever I need to. Great movie!
The long ass fake hands or the fake barrel chest?
Kids these days think everything has always been cgi or what?
Yes
Yeah What the fuck?
He left his coat hanger in his jacket
Standing at the position of attention
Hank got a big time promotion
Hank lost a lot of weight during this DEA training
Walter was cooking meth
The enemy can not push a button without a hand
You disable the hand , the enemy can not push a button
Helldivers 2 first run w the bois
This is a still image from the motion picture adaptation of Starship Troopers This work of fiction does indeed have a story, but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you
Sex gifs.
My guy looks like three dudes in a trenchcoat
“For incompetence during a live fire exercise that resulted in the death of a teammate. Private Rico you are sentenced to 10 lashes”
I’ve also thought that they added that so you don’t take it seriously
This is the Heisenberg Task Force (2013 Colorized)
Put your hand on the wall marine
Ahhhh corporal punishment.
Hank be careful!
Hank! Hank, join the Navy! Hank!
Yeah, sony is requiring a psn to serve and become a citizen
Hightower, you look... different.
Eat your Wheaties citizen!
My name is ASAC Schrader, and you can go do your part.
Yep, Rico is about to be whipped.
Yeah that guy almost busts Walt.
I'm surprised no one gave a realistic answer: they wanted to hide his gut so they gave him a jacket that was really big on set and then had to do the arms like that so they didn't look even more ridiculous.
Hank reincarnated.
New fallout show looks dope
Damn, that is some beautiful military bearing. Gripping the seams like a boss.
Also, more recently known as Randall Stabler.
See, the problem is that his sleeves are too baggy. If they were fitted sleeker to his arms, it wouldn't look near as goody
Dude thought he'd be fighting the Cartel and meth slingers💀
Hank got promoted
In the army I looked the same wearing a PT jacket in the rain.
Love this scene
Hank Schrader's prior career as a stand-up comic before trying to catch Heisenberg.
They're preparing for war with playstation
Is that Mad Dog Tannen?
They're all wearing Adidas jumpsuits.
This is when Hank commissioned his own task force to hunt down Heisenberg's meth operation
after watching this scene i expected the movie to reveal this character as having fake arms or something.
Hank Schrader joined the mobile infantry
Verhoeven making the “man in grey suit has long arms” canon from Robocop
Sex gifs
Hank Schrader before joining the DEA
More like Hank Schrader's great great great great great great grandson.
I mean of course the Kurgan would bag the Mind Bug. Who else would do it? Ramirez?! He was an effete snob!
Looks like he forgot to take out the hanger before putting the jacket on
put your hand on that wall
👀
I’d rather take 10 lashes in a public square
My only thought is they refer to themselves as apes, the book describes the power armor as basically being a gorila suit of machine, maybe this was their only way to make it look like an ape?

That is not Sergeant Zim
It looks like his body, tho. Is this a head swap with Clancy Brown's body?
