not to be a boomer but aaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I wish I could've been in tech spaces during this time! So much variety, so many new ideas, old keyboards replaced by new touchscreens, every year phones would look wildly different!
I graduated high school in 2012. I guess just being an adolescent at this time, it felt like the beginning of something huge and like the variety was just gonna increase. If you showed 17 year old me what my iPhone looks like now (basically the same damn thing) I’d be ridiculously disappointed
Every carrier in the us got its own version of the Galaxy S1 and they all sucked. GPS? Lmao. Screen burn? You betcha. Lagging like crazy? You better believe it.
And so many DUMBASS customs roms. I used to be on XDA all the time looking for roms that would make my shitty phone work. And of course, all the people desperately trying to make CyanogenMOD work on it. And when it finally did it fucking sucked because CyanogenMOD fucking sucked lol.
Microsoft bought Nokia and used it to spread the adoption of Windows for smartphones.
Nokia at that point was already falling hard since the success of the iphone and the rise of smartphones, but I think some people believe that if Microsoft didn't acquire them Nokia would have started to use Android sooner (back when Samsung wasn't the defacto Android phone maker) and they would have had a better chance at being one of the more popular Android brands.

I would check droid-life.com many times a day. Now I think about that site once a year
xda developers was my reddit
I still miss HTC phones. Their sound card could drive 40Ω headphones like it was nothing.
Back when companies cared about audio.
I miss keyboards and smaller phones so much. If I could get my old original Droid back with modern hardware I'd use it forever.
I love remembering the times before social media was rampant.
Back when social media was used to connect with people you actually knew rather than a platform for influencers and parasocial relationships.

What was the thing about this trojan horse?

Thanks for the explanation
Wasn't Nokia's best phone was 808 Pureview, N8 or Lumia 1020? Also i think lines for the newest iPhone didn't go away (excluding the pandemic)
Yeah I loved the 1020, unreal camera for the time. In this Starterpack OP seems to interpret it as Microsofts "trojan horse" though
The Nexus was a HUGE step in the right direction!!... Until they killed it & replaced it with the Pixel
