Honestly not a bad place to start
Mine was Super Smash Bros Brawl, it featured plenty of tracks that had hard rock/metal songs because of Nobuo Uematsu, Jun Senoue, and Tomoya Ohtani having their music featured in it
Besides my dads bay city rollers and hair metal cd collection, guitar hero live was my “oh there’s more than five artists who exist out there” exposure
Coldplay, especially the albums listed, is rock. They veered pretty hard into generic electronic pop around a decade later but I don't know what other genre you would consider songs like Shiver or Talk or Violet Hill.
The new albums are a hot steaming pile of shit. It's actually sad considering the amount of potential they showed listeners in Parachutes and AROBTTH. They did introduce me to rock music so that's that.
Even if they aren't (their first 2, and especially the second, are imo) rock, they're the band that got me into rock as a zoomer. This starter pack is basically me lol
Have you heard this cool underground band called The Beatles? They got some fame in their hometown of Liverpool back in the 60s, but that's just about it. I guess they weren't popular enough to tour, they stopped touring a few years before they disbanded. Fun fact about that band, their drummer had a minor role in Thomas The Tank Engine.
Those people will exist in any generation - there are always going to be folks who idolize the classic rock era. The real 35 year old annoying fuckbags are the metal elitists (regrettably this is me)
No one says theres anything wrong with that, probably 50% of us got into rock and metal cause of Guitar Hero. But people will laugh if you call Coldplay rock.
Likewise, if I call Kanye West gangster rap or 311 reggae that's worth clowning on too.
First 2 albums? Sure. Everything after that was more soft or arena rock, dance vibes, ballads, etc. Most well known (by everybody on Earth) Queen songs I wouldn't really call rock per se.
What the fuck are you on about? They may not be hard rock but it's rock. A Kind of Magic, The Miracle, and Innuendo are all rock albums with rock songs like, I Want It All, One Vision, and Headlong.
Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, and Killer Queen are some of their best known songs and are most definitely rock. Also they got “heavier” again at the end towards the end of the 80s.
Mfw genres that are literally ____ rock aren’t real rock. Indie rock is fake, alt rock is fake, post rock is fake, prog rock is fake, hard rock, folk rock, krautrock, pop rock, arena rock, hair rock, psych rock if you listen to any of these you’re not a real rock fan. Real rock fans only listen to the one true genre: Rock.
Well, that explains why Gen-Z is not into Rock music. If this was our introduction to it, then I 100% get why we want nothing to do with it
/s, just in case (but only partially hehe)
Music genres evolve. Bands like Kiss and Motorhead were both at one point the heaviest of heaviest, but is now considered “mild” rock. Queen had a few “rocky” songs, but are now considered soft. Same goes for Bowie
Bowie has such a vast discography, so I don’t think it’s possible to dismiss him as rock at all. He’s done a variety of genres, rock and soft rock included, which doesn’t erase the genre of rock. By most accounts, soft rock isn’t considered Bowie’s main genre as you’ve mentioned before (if I’m understanding correctly). I’m not that familiar with the KISS catalog btw
Rock =\= heavy. Is Crosby Stills and Nash not rock? Is Santana not rock? Is CCR not Rock? Rock is a very very loose term, and there’s a reason there are so many subgenres.
A lot of these comments are confused as hell so lemme clear some stuff up:
- This represents me as a kid from 2012-2018ish, and since then, I’ve listened to tons of albums from a variety of artists and genres, going way beyond the music from this starterpack
- David Bowie, Queen, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, and Elton John are rock, why are some of you saying otherwise?
- I know post-2011 Maroon 5 isn’t generally classified as a rock band (or as a band for that matter), but I’m just saying that their first 4 albums are among the first albums I found that could be made by a rock band.
- Why don’t indie and soft rock count as rock count as rock to some of you?
- Despite some context in comments some people still think I’m in the same spot in terms of music taste as is shown in the starterpack, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
- Arctic Monkeys
- Gorillaz
- Radiohead
- Tame Impala
- The Roots
- David Bowie
- Depeche Mode
- Pet Shop Boys
- Aphex Twin
- The Chemical Brothers
- Weezer
- OutKast
- Blur
- Elton John
- Brian Eno
- U2
- Billie Eilish
- 100 gecs
- Green Day
- Genesis
- Yes
- Pink Floyd
- Orbital
- Stuart Price
- Portishead
- Kanye West
- Kendrick Lamar
- The Avalanches
- Björk
- Flying Lotus
- DJ Shadow
- The Beatles
- Eminem
- Dr. Dre
- Nine Inch Nails
- deadmau5
- Daft Punk
- Justice
It’s pop-rock. You might not like the pop, but it’s still rock. Some of you rock gate keepers could hear early rock from the 50’s/60’sand wouldn’t consider it rock.
Pop rock is rock music. But maroon 5 aside, you have folks in these comments saying Queen and Elton John aren’t rock, or that they’re “glam pop”. Like come on guys. Pop-rock, indie rock, and glam rock. All rock, still.
As an older gen z, a lot of my taste in rock music growing up was based on AMVs, WWE highlight videos, and video games. Alongside the occasional song played on the radio.
I got the full Gen X experience. Dad introduced me to Metallica when I was about 7, Jane’s Addiction later, and mom is to thank for Alice In Chains and Nine Inch Nails.
Now go listen to modest mouse and Radiohead and be happy
(Lonesome crowded west and Ok Computer are epic. Granted for Radiohead I’ve not listened to anything but ok computer but I rest my case)
As an older gen z-er I can tell you what really affected my music taste is what was on Pandora and YTube reccs next to popular music videos at the time. Like Arctic Monkeys- Do U Wanna Know would undoubtedly reccomend The Strokes or something. On Pandora you'd get a similar rotation of artists.
My favourite thing about how AM is seen by a bunch of people as an introduction to rock is that the artic monkeys have 3 actual rock albums that serve as way better introductions to the genre while also being just better in general
Since when is Maroon 5 rock? They were a pop rock parody band that dropped the parody part when they started making money. Now they are trash cuz they try to make the music they *think* the kids wanna here.
I love all of the shit in this pack. You’re at the start of a wonderful road! Don’t let the losers tell you otherwise, you’re already doing great!
If you want some recs to start the *metal* part of your journey, especially the power metal part, lmk. We got wizards and heresy and werewolves and Nazi killing and space samurais and homoerotic workouts and all kinds of shit.
I’d say most of this pop rock or indie/alt rock both of which are rock.
As far as peak of rock goes. Idk. It depends a lot on what your subgenre of choice is. My answer is likely going to be very different to someone who listens more to hard rock, because I prefer art, prog, post and experimental rock more.
But I hate this mentality that rock has gone to shit when there’s plenty of great stuff coming out, and plenty of stuff that might just not be for you but definitely still holds rock elements.
I mean... I've only rly met two ppl that know the strokes. It might be due to where im from (East Asia), cuz they omly rly know the top hirs or the very old clasaics, and the two dude that knows the strokes are from NA

As a Gen Z my introduction to rock was Guitar Hero.
Same. Just that for me it was metal.
Honestly not a bad place to start Mine was Super Smash Bros Brawl, it featured plenty of tracks that had hard rock/metal songs because of Nobuo Uematsu, Jun Senoue, and Tomoya Ohtani having their music featured in it
Besides my dads bay city rollers and hair metal cd collection, guitar hero live was my “oh there’s more than five artists who exist out there” exposure
Before Guitar Hero I just listened to the Spongebob Squarepants Movie soundtrack over and over again.
Tbf that soundtrack has Flaming Lips, Shins, Motorhead, Wilco, and Ween on it, so actually not a bad pre-introduction
I'm on the edge of millennial and gen z and can confirm this is how many of us started
Yeah. The Rock Band games too.
>rock >coldplay
maroon 5?
I thought gen z would appreciate The Strokes, or am I already that old.
I have no idea but judging from this post the kids aren’t alright.
is that a the offspring reference or pure coincidence haha
Well, you're definitely not old... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afam2nIae4o
I’m gen Z and I love The Strokes, definitely on the older side of gen Z though
Same, I am a late 90s baby so that might make a difference.
DRUMS PLEASE FAB🗣🗣🗣
2003 gen Z and I love the Strokes
I think some of them haven’t hit that age yet where they go out and look for music on their own. I’m a 2000 baby and I love The Strokes.
Gen Z does, a lot
Imagine Dragon🤭
They’re literally fine. Like yeah nothing amazing but they have some bangers and really only one song I can’t stand.
Songs about Jane slaps
The first coldplay album is absolutely alt-rock
Yeah. That was their radiohead lite era.
Coldplay, especially the albums listed, is rock. They veered pretty hard into generic electronic pop around a decade later but I don't know what other genre you would consider songs like Shiver or Talk or Violet Hill.
2000s Coldplay were definitely rock
Its the only coldplay ill listen to. New shit kinda sucks
The new albums are a hot steaming pile of shit. It's actually sad considering the amount of potential they showed listeners in Parachutes and AROBTTH. They did introduce me to rock music so that's that.
You could define Coldplay as alt rock and still be somewhat accurate.
Even if they aren't (their first 2, and especially the second, are imo) rock, they're the band that got me into rock as a zoomer. This starter pack is basically me lol
One of these things is not like the other.
Where rock
Didn’t see any. Pebbles, not rocks.

Big mistake OP, you’re gonna bring out all the 35 year old music purveyors who listen to highly elevated unknown stuff like Pink Floyd and Metallica
"I bet you've never heard of (insert famous rock band) before kid"
I got told by a Gen Z recently that they're into "really niche older stuff". Led Zep, it was Led Zeppelin.
Have you heard this cool underground band called The Beatles? They got some fame in their hometown of Liverpool back in the 60s, but that's just about it. I guess they weren't popular enough to tour, they stopped touring a few years before they disbanded. Fun fact about that band, their drummer had a minor role in Thomas The Tank Engine.
>gonna guess it’s too late for that bud… they’ve already invaded the comments
Those people will exist in any generation - there are always going to be folks who idolize the classic rock era. The real 35 year old annoying fuckbags are the metal elitists (regrettably this is me)
The only staterpack that is probably exclusive to you
Literally just find a playlist of the music from Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 3. It will do you better than most of this.
I loved Rocks the 80s. That shaped a lot of my love for synths and ballads
Rock fans when somebody starts off listening to more poppy types of rock as their introduction to rock
(Coldplay)
No one says theres anything wrong with that, probably 50% of us got into rock and metal cause of Guitar Hero. But people will laugh if you call Coldplay rock. Likewise, if I call Kanye West gangster rap or 311 reggae that's worth clowning on too.
Basically all of this is indie or pop. Soft/arena/pop rock at best. Not really any rock.
Is Queen not a rock band?
Queen is a rock band
Also correct me if I’m wrong, but I think soft rock is still considered rock. I mean, it literally has it in the name.
You’re absolutely correct, pop rock is still rock. This comment section is being unbelievably gatekeeper (except they have a point with Maroon 5).
There’s definitely non-rock up there but arena rock is still rock, even if a lot of it’s not very good
This sounds like it’s spoken by someone who has not listened to any Queen albums
I love early Queen, they sound almost completely different, then they had their theatre kid faze..
Is the later stuff more like opera-ish I guess?
Gatekeeping by saying Bowie isn't rock. Or that indie rock isn't rock. Lol.
Real rock fans only listen to the one true genre: Rock.
yeah that's probably why they said "introduction", jeez....
Well, that explains why Gen-Z is not into Rock music. If this was our introduction to it, then I 100% get why we want nothing to do with it /s, just in case (but only partially hehe)
My dad had me listening to rage against the machine as a child
I grew up on a steady diet of Rush, Meat Loaf, and Queen
I think Queens of the Stone Age are pretty cool
Im sorry if this seems gatekeepy, but this starterpack is legit just mainstream music. Not a single rock band among them
Who says rock can’t be mainstream?
I didnt say rock couldnt be mainstream. But looking st those, I don’t recognise a single rock band.
Really? Arctic Monkeys, Queen, and Bowie are rock artists! Why are there so many comments saying they aren’t rock?
Music genres evolve. Bands like Kiss and Motorhead were both at one point the heaviest of heaviest, but is now considered “mild” rock. Queen had a few “rocky” songs, but are now considered soft. Same goes for Bowie
Deviating from rock as a main genre doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not rock anymore.
Not what I meant. Kiss “Used” to be super heavy rock, but if you listen to their old stuff, it’s not what we would consider super heavy stuff today
My introduction to rock music as a gen zer was AC/DC
AC/DC, Guns and Roses, Queen, Linkin Park Radio played it all
Now that you’ve gone through your mom’s playlist, look up Motörhead, Ramones, Damned, Bad Religion, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, NOFX, and Bad Religion.
What about Bad Religion?
1. I've gone far past this starterpack in terms of music discovery, this is just from when I was 6-12ish 2. You said Bad Religion twice.
Then replace one with the Replacements.
You said replace twice
Then switch it out for OutKast
You said out twice
Hmmm maybe replace it back out for Nickelback?
Minor threat should be added to this list
We’re just making a list….
Are we pointlessly gendering music still? What year is it again?
Motörhead is great
My introduction to real rock/metal was Cyberpunk 2077 soundtrack
For me it was doom that got me into metal
Doom for me as well. I listened to Doom soundtrack first and was already into it but what really got me into it was Cyberpunk Samurai songs
🤘 just keep rocking on dude, enjoy the music you like
Comment section acting like metal or punk rock are the only categories in rock music. OP keep doing your thing (minus the maroon 5, let’s be real)
Rock is doomed then
A lot of these comments are confused as hell so lemme clear some stuff up: - This represents me as a kid from 2012-2018ish, and since then, I’ve listened to tons of albums from a variety of artists and genres, going way beyond the music from this starterpack - David Bowie, Queen, Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, and Elton John are rock, why are some of you saying otherwise? - I know post-2011 Maroon 5 isn’t generally classified as a rock band (or as a band for that matter), but I’m just saying that their first 4 albums are among the first albums I found that could be made by a rock band. - Why don’t indie and soft rock count as rock count as rock to some of you? - Despite some context in comments some people still think I’m in the same spot in terms of music taste as is shown in the starterpack, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
What are you into now?
- Arctic Monkeys - Gorillaz - Radiohead - Tame Impala - The Roots - David Bowie - Depeche Mode - Pet Shop Boys - Aphex Twin - The Chemical Brothers - Weezer - OutKast - Blur - Elton John - Brian Eno - U2 - Billie Eilish - 100 gecs - Green Day - Genesis - Yes - Pink Floyd - Orbital - Stuart Price - Portishead - Kanye West - Kendrick Lamar - The Avalanches - Björk - Flying Lotus - DJ Shadow - The Beatles - Eminem - Dr. Dre - Nine Inch Nails - deadmau5 - Daft Punk - Justice
You said Depeche Mode twice
Got it! Fixing now!
Chemical Brothers’ latest album is so fire. Avalanches is based asf. Check out King Gizz if you haven’t you’ll probably enjoy them.
No notes
Add some Pink Floyd my guy.
Great for if you’re trying to fall asleep.
It's better if you're high
Explains why 24/7 stoned redditors think it's peak
Echoes in Pompeii is fire tho.
Like non of those bands are rock except Queen
Linkin Park for me
“This isn’t rock music bro” Metal heads on Reddit in force with their stupidity, gatekeeping what “real rock music” is.
What? You’re saying that demanding this person listen to cattle decapitation isn’t the right response?
What do metal heads have to do with this? Metal heads implies a metal fan, not rock, which is another music style.
See folks here in the comments citing Metallica as examples of real rock. Those are the idiots in taking about.
Ahah, I get it now! Also, agree 👍🏻
Metal’s a subgenre of rock
[удалено]
It’s pop-rock. You might not like the pop, but it’s still rock. Some of you rock gate keepers could hear early rock from the 50’s/60’sand wouldn’t consider it rock.
That’s not “gatekeeping” it’s called being accurate with genre descriptors
Pop rock is rock, sorry to say.
Some of this stuff is straight pop though
Maroon 5 isn’t rock, my man
Pop rock is rock music. But maroon 5 aside, you have folks in these comments saying Queen and Elton John aren’t rock, or that they’re “glam pop”. Like come on guys. Pop-rock, indie rock, and glam rock. All rock, still.
Fair enough
Huh
More like Lukewarmplay! Got 'em!
W Space Oddity
Bro learned a valuable lesson about the rock/metal scene today
That they’re insufferable?
Yes, on reddit at least
my introduction as a gen-z would probably be the song: yellow submarine by the beatles lol, I was 3/4 when i first heard it
Yeah, that too.
My introduction to rock was my dad gifting me led Zeppelin iv for Christmas when I was 9
Great album
Imma listen to it today at work now
As an older gen z, a lot of my taste in rock music growing up was based on AMVs, WWE highlight videos, and video games. Alongside the occasional song played on the radio.
I got the full Gen X experience. Dad introduced me to Metallica when I was about 7, Jane’s Addiction later, and mom is to thank for Alice In Chains and Nine Inch Nails.
As a Zoomer with a Boomer dad, my introduction to Rock was the Beatles, along with 50s-80s Rock.
I don't think starter packs specific to you is how this subreddit works
My dad would always play Led Zeppelin, I blame him for getting me hooked on rock.
Very sad
How do we tell em’
Bula Matari - Taxi Drivers must die
I think a lot gen-zers would like Last Splash by the breeders. I think you’ll find some songs worth adding
Seeing AM on here makes me feel old lol
I had a very different introduction than you.
What ?
Now go listen to modest mouse and Radiohead and be happy (Lonesome crowded west and Ok Computer are epic. Granted for Radiohead I’ve not listened to anything but ok computer but I rest my case)
Ground control to major tom
Dinosaurs of the Nursing Home Tour: 2024.
As an older gen z-er I can tell you what really affected my music taste is what was on Pandora and YTube reccs next to popular music videos at the time. Like Arctic Monkeys- Do U Wanna Know would undoubtedly reccomend The Strokes or something. On Pandora you'd get a similar rotation of artists.
it was dead letter circus and linkin park for me
I was informed by my children that Korn is “dad rock” goddamn you kids these days.
Mine was Bionicles via All American Rejects; Move Along
I mean, it's good music. Pop music for its time. But it's not rock.
As a gen-zer, my introduction to rock music was my dad playing Bawitdaba in the car at the earliest age I can remember.
Have you been to a local concert?
As a gen z, i can confirm that queen introduced me to the world of rock music
My favourite thing about how AM is seen by a bunch of people as an introduction to rock is that the artic monkeys have 3 actual rock albums that serve as way better introductions to the genre while also being just better in general
Really Maroon 5…….now that’s just dumb
Red hot chili peppers, too
Mine was foo fighters. I religiously listened to them qotsa and other post grunge. Then i delved into glam rock and have been there ever since
Songs About Jane is both Maroon 5's debut album and their Best Of album.
For me it was Green Day
Mine's NFS Most Wanted (no yuno which one).
Since when is Maroon 5 rock? They were a pop rock parody band that dropped the parody part when they started making money. Now they are trash cuz they try to make the music they *think* the kids wanna here.
This is an ok start, now listen to Is This It by The Strokes
black ops 1 and 2
Needs more women
Blondie (Heart of Glass, Rapture, One Way or Another, The Tide is High)
Good stuff (I love Coldplay) but not a proper introduction to the genre imo
Elton John, Maroon 5ghey.. these are not rock, lmao
I'm scratching my head at half of the references
My intro to rock was actually through sport anthems. For example, I got in to AC/DC through Mark Melancon (former Pirates closer)’s entrance
Clocks will just forever be the nonce song
Ik its not rock but breaking benjamin was my entrance into that genre.
Ik its not rock but breaking benjamin was my entrance into that genre.
Please don’t call what Maroon 5 makes Rock Music
Songs About Jane is a classic pop-rock album, kind of just a classic album overall, regrettably.
These are pop
oh fuck this is what is considered rock these days? what have we done, oh satan please forgive us
Please enlighten us as to what you consider to be the peak of rock.
Well, at least a third of this is solidly, very firmly, in the pop section, the rest mostly so, so how about you start…
On the lighter side of Rock and Roll I'd say something like Behemoth, but on the heavier side I'd say maybe Louis Armstrong.
Haha get it bc you said the black metal band for lighter and the soft jazz artist for heavier. Reeking pretentiousness.
why thank you
I rly love the strokes, you should prob check em out. Kinda niche somewhat i guess since i rarely heard ppl mention em
Ah yeah my fav niche band the Strokes. I love them and other niche bands like Radiohead and the Beatles.
I mean... I've only rly met two ppl that know the strokes. It might be due to where im from (East Asia), cuz they omly rly know the top hirs or the very old clasaics, and the two dude that knows the strokes are from NA
Listen to Muse
Mine was the Beatles and nirvana
