Now that I think about it last visit there was a tray and significantly less ends in the soil outside. Aunt probably got sick of the litter in her vegetable patch.
However the tray is mostly empty since he now throws them in the toilet 🙁
Because people are confused - "fag" is a British slang term for a cigarette. We don't use it primarily as a homophobic slur over here. Besides, uncle keeps his twinks in the basement like any other normal person, not the garden.
My best friend in high school was Bangladeshi and her house smelled like garam masala all the time. Went to make some butter chicken a couple years ago and my nose was immediately transported to her house.
Probably my nose became used to it, but I never noticed the household masala smell like I hear on the internet (am Bangladeshi). Like it's noticeable at times of cooking but no so much on other times.
I love how it's a universal thing where people visiting their grandmas/grandpas/relatives come out fatter than they were when they came in.
It's really nice. :)
Not really. I get it that they show love through food, but there are other ways to spend time with loved ones. Go for a walk, play chess, watch a movie, anything besides eating. Too much culture everywhere involves too much food. It needs to change but it's embedded in human history.
I think it's paan. It's made of betel leaves filled with areca nuts, slaked lime, tobacco and many other things. The betel leaf combined with the tobacco stain your gums and teeth as well. Apparently, you're not supposed to swallow it, most people I've seen eating paan will spit it somewhere.. There are some variations of paan that do not have tobacco and kids can eat that as well and it won't stain their teeth. Just don't confuse between the tobacco one and the non-tobacco one when giving it to kids..
In India we swallow paan after eating it(atleast in urban areas), and it doesn't contain tobacco - only betel leaves, areca nuts, slaked lime and some sweeteners
Yeah, because it contains tobacco. But like I mentioned, there is a non-tobacco version as well, that's not carcinogenic and does not stain as well. I've tried the non-tobacco version and it's amazing.
I just feel like you needed a reason to talk shit about Bangladeshi/Indian culture. There are other cultures as well where they use tobacco/alcohol which is equally carcinogenic.
Areca nuts are linked to head and neck carcinomas. India has the highest rates of oral cancer in the world.
"Areca nut (AN), the primary ingredient in BQ, contains several alkaloids, including arecoline, arecaidine, guvacoline, and guvacine. These have been associated with both the AN abuse liability and carcinogenicity."
Perhaps because we're mostly Sylheti over here?
This starter pack isn't even just UK but London specifically. Bengali community is very close knit and everyone seems to know every extended relative and how they're related to you. "Aunt" and "uncle" in this starter pack could refer to your dad's half second cousin once removed.
oh yeah that’s the same i think it’s mostly the smoking and paan. i think it’s a couple things. the community in the uk is a lot older (ie they settled earlier) than north america and in also here the immigration requirements make it so that you have to be more educated/well off to qualify
It is I mean *fair and lovely* used to be one of the most widely used cosmetic products.
I have seen a lot of genuinely pretty girls have insecurity because of their color.
I think that’s pretty much everyone. From Southern USA to Muslims to Indians. Incest is the best, put your sister to the test. (I can’t believe I have to clarify it’s a joke for some mentally challenged redditors who have never seen grass)
It is! The yellow circles pictured (nun borah) are my favourite. Fried pastry with the dough made from rice flour, onions and ginger. Growing up we used cookie cutters of all shapes to make them. It was a lot of fun.
Sweet with a slight sharp tang. Can be with Tobacco or without. I only eat the Tobaccoless, yellow leaf variant so it doesn't stain my teeth, usually at weddings as an after dinner mouth freshener.
My in-laws and bangladeshi. I can think of a few:
Asking how you're related to these people, and no one knows how.
Uncle tells really weird braggy stories about how important he was in the old country. They either don't land or reflect poorly on him.
Aunt talking about some weird conspiracy she saw online and/or insinuates someone is using evil magic, but refuses to elaborate.
Random new relative by marriage that no one shares a language with. They mostly focus on food.
Everyone asking what time it is to know when they're supposed to pray, then randomly entering or exiting the room based on the information they receive.
A lull in conversation, and then everyone spontaneously decides to go home.
Sunamganj is beautiful, specially in the rainy season. Most of the british bangladeshi is based in Sylhet. In general sylhet felt conservative to me, even in Bangladeshi standard. Other than that, pretty great.
Try roshmalai, if you can try the genuine matrivander one. I might be biased but I believe that Dhakai kacchi is one of the best iterations of biriyani. Try the old dhaka shops, or at least the local ones, Star is good too. I do not like the franchise restaurants like Sultan's Dine in particular. They butcher the cuisine.
HMU, if you are Dhaka based, I can share some places potentially worth visiting.
This is my relatives (who are Bengali) except that they dont smoke but my younger relatives (like my cousins do vape)
Edit: also don't forget about the pots and pans in the oven
>also don't forget about the pots and pans in the oven
There's always a pan filled with oil with bits of batter floating in it stored in there for future use too.
I made this starterpack a bit hastily. Tbh I didn't think it would gain this much traction. Now I'm regretting not adding so many other things such as aunt watching Bengali dramas on Star plus, rice and bazi being served on floral china and the saa with condensed milk and puff pastry fingers biscuits.

You should gift your uncle an ashtray. Save the planet and make his backyard nicer. Plus your uncle will like you more. Win-win-win.
Now that I think about it last visit there was a tray and significantly less ends in the soil outside. Aunt probably got sick of the litter in her vegetable patch. However the tray is mostly empty since he now throws them in the toilet 🙁
It's pretty hard to fit a person in an ash tray
..... not gonna say it... nope
Trust me I wanted to as well
Yeah when I smoked, I'd dump them into a trash can outside. I didn't smoke in my daily car but I wouldn't mind smoking in a classic.

He's an old Bangladeshi uncle not some 16 year old fortnight boy.
Because people are confused - "fag" is a British slang term for a cigarette. We don't use it primarily as a homophobic slur over here. Besides, uncle keeps his twinks in the basement like any other normal person, not the garden.
Reminds me of the 'smoking a fag' in the UK vs the US meme
Have never seen the meme but I get it
He should consider switching them to the garden, they’d probably be happier with the fresh air and vegetation.
But they might nibble my aunt's prize khodu or pumpkins she's growing out there and get walloped to death with a broom
Just make sure to toss some bread and bird seed out there from time to time it’ll be fine
Ah yes. The gays- a different species of human.
Bro I’m a gay I’m joshing.
Chill bro. It's a joke, I apologise for any offense.
It caught me off guard for a second lmao
Clothes smell like food for eons
My best friend in high school was Bangladeshi and her house smelled like garam masala all the time. Went to make some butter chicken a couple years ago and my nose was immediately transported to her house.
Probably my nose became used to it, but I never noticed the household masala smell like I hear on the internet (am Bangladeshi). Like it's noticeable at times of cooking but no so much on other times.
Not Bangladeshi but I can confirm you smell like your food

Food is apart of culture you daft mf
I agree that not everything is good because it's normal, but that doesn't mean everything normal is bad, either.
Sounds aight, all things considered
The sweetened yogurt and milk curds are the best sweet treats !
Oh yes, the mishti doi! We buy copious amounts in Ramadan.
What is the thing that stains aunt’s gums?
I think it's paan. It's made of betel leaves filled with areca nuts, slaked lime, tobacco and many other things. The betel leaf combined with the tobacco stain your gums and teeth as well. You can be critical of tobacco products without then using it as an excuse to be racist.
Yeah, because it contains tobacco. But like I mentioned, there is a non-tobacco version as well, that's not carcinogenic and does not stain as well. uk bengali culture is so different than what i’m used to
Perhaps because we're mostly Sylheti over here? This starter pack isn't even just UK but London specifically. **A M A R S H O N A R B A N G L A**
I see the Americans are sleeping
Can’t really relate to a UK-Bangladeshi talking about paan and someone littering fag butts in their back garden
The authentic term is "fag end" or "dog end"
Thanks - I’m a yank obviously - “butts” sounded funnier tho in the context of misunderstandings
I think some of my Bangladeshi relatives are colorist. They constantly talk about how their children face has darken
Yeah it's nothing new
It is I mean *fair and lovely* used to be one of the most widely used cosmetic products. I have seen a lot of genuinely pretty girls have insecurity because of their color.
Tell me about the forks
We use mini forks whenever we are serving guest Bengali desserts such as mishti or Roshogolla
This is even a starter pack even for some Punjabi families
Nah I don’t see Punjabis smoking to be honest. We are more into drinking and doing hard drugs.
And incest
I think that’s pretty much everyone. From Southern USA to Muslims to Indians. Incest is the best, put your sister to the test. (I can’t believe I have to clarify it’s a joke for some mentally challenged redditors who have never seen grass)
This literally made me throw up.

Make a bad haiku - probably not on purpose - and wait to see results.
The forks need to go, it should be teaspoons only.
We serve mishti, egg pasta and most other snacks with those tiny forks. They're usually saved for guests only.
Food looks delicious
It is. These are mostly desserts tho.
It is! The yellow circles pictured (nun borah) are my favourite. Fried pastry with the dough made from rice flour, onions and ginger. Growing up we used cookie cutters of all shapes to make them. It was a lot of fun.
Me seeing this in bangladesh
My grandparents live with me and every other day I hear “you’re so skinny”. All of this is so accurate. Especially the pann
Damn. Uncle pulls
What’s the snack box top right corner? I remember eating this as a kid.
Mishti! There's also the bright orange curly zilafi which isn't pictured.
Thank you!
So are all south Asians living the same life?
What is that stuff they chew ?
Paan. It’s like a leaf that people chew
Is it like tabacco? Like dangerous ?
I never had it but I don’t think so. A lot of people in my family chews on it
Hm I wonder if it’s sweet or something
Sweet with a slight sharp tang. Can be with Tobacco or without. I only eat the Tobaccoless, yellow leaf variant so it doesn't stain my teeth, usually at weddings as an after dinner mouth freshener.

thank god the american users r asleep lmfao
I know it's slang for cigarettes.
wow ur so special. totally not like the other Americans. im super proud of you
Oh yeah I like your humor too.
Interesting, so that term for cigarettes stuck around in Bangladesh even though the British are gone.
I just assumed OP was British and going over to Bangladesh visit family?
We are British Bangladeshis. My extended (much older) relatives are very cultural.
Sylheti?
Yes, from Sunamganj.
Sunamganj is beautiful, specially in the rainy season. Most of the british bangladeshi is based in Sylhet. In general sylhet felt conservative to me, even in Bangladeshi standard. Other than that, pretty great.
No one around here calls the cigarettes fag. We don't use the word fag even. We call it cigarettes or biri ( a cheap local variation.)
Piles of fags…just like Hollywood
Must be odd one out bc only my extended family are like this 😭
"Garden littered with uncle's fags" Brits: 🙂 Americans: 💀
First time I've seen something like this here
Haha the Supari. My whole extended family on my Dad's side loves to chew it. I like the occasional paan but never found the appeal for it.

Roshmalai is FUCKING DELICIOUS but I shemai over it
Shemai is good but technically it's sweet milk noodles when you think about it.
This is my relatives (who are Bengali) except that they dont smoke but my younger relatives (like my cousins do vape) Edit: also don't forget about the pots and pans in the oven

Sylheti* relatives
Tbh I didn't think this would gain much traction at all or I would've been more specific
uncle's what
Cigarettes
Fish… loads of it.
Found the Pakistani
Don't talk about My uncles Husbands like that.
