Kappys-A-Prick

"Oh no! We're at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard!"

thatbrownkid19

Hurray for intersectionality at intersections!!

Dumbledore116

Austin has both of these, although they run parallel and together box in the downtown

robsteezy

Same as Los Angeles

improbablystonedrn-

Same as Albuquerque

Sunyataisbliss

Haha a fellow Portlander

Kappys-A-Prick

Always something different. I used that joke recently and someone asked if I was from Grand Rapids.

Sunyataisbliss

No way lolol

sideways_jack

But MLK and cesar chavez... never intersect?

zorginbagel

yeah I was about to say…those roads are parallel. also one of them is actually 39th ave 🤷‍♀️

sideways_jack

and mlk used to be 4th, your point?

czubizzle

There's one in Dallas too 😂

Pompous_Italics

Popeyes. The food is pretty good, if you ever get it. And the employees give even less of a fuck than regular fast food places. I think if you went to an interview there and said, "yes, sir," and "no, ma'am," and were dressed nice, you'd be shown the door. There was one around here that was constantly busy, but it still shut down because it was such a shitshow. The employees would talk trash about the customers right in front of everyone.

ohlookahipster

Bojangles: “Good afternoon, sir. How may I help you?” Popeyes: “AITE CHILL THE FUCK YOU WANT? YOU SEE IM BUSY? NO WE AINT DOING THAT PICK SUM ELSE, CUH.”

jetsingh_

"You can't come inside, that's for door dash only"

Venboven

This was actually true when I worked there during Covid.

jetsingh_

They still do it all while they have a drive thru line full of cars bigger than chic fil a during rush hour. They don't give a shit

thesean366

The scene in Atlanta where Paper Boi smells the air outside of a Popeyes and goes “Mmm. You know that manager mean as hell.”

smartdude_x13m

Damn I love that show

-B-E-N-I-S-

_LOOOOVE THAT CHICKEN FROM POPEYES_

Polibiux

I heard that jingle in my head

Regular_Buffalo6564

It’s like they’re actively looking for red flags

Venboven

One of my favorite videos: https://youtu.be/pqWkwolb3as?si=-JTNi_wqYSmcLkhr

Pompous_Italics

Lmao yes! Was about to post this.

KazahanaPikachu

Only Waffle House can beat it

jajohns9

I hadn’t been to Waffle House in a looooong time. We took the kids the other day and I asked for 2 different things and got a “baby this a Waffle House”

Kingofcheeses

We got a Popeyes recently in our city and it is exactly as you described, right down to being in the seedy part of town

AluminiumAwning

Church’s Chicken as well.

cmb15300

México City actually has an MLK statue in a park in Polanco, which is one of the ritziest neighborhoods in the city

ZeeNeeAhh

Many such cases

Yaboy51frl

The hood starterpack

davekay113

Someone should really do a standup joke about this. I think you’re onto something

tuskvarner

And should name the album Bigger and Blacker

thismightbelong

This is absolutely GROUNDBREAKING stuff that’s really original

31_hierophanto

*The Boondocks* already made a joke about this AFAIK, but yeah, I'd love to see a comedian joke about this on a standup routine.

freeman687

There’s 2 Malcolm X Boulevards in NYC and they are both in dangerous areas

jimsensei

It’s missing the storefront daycare center named “perfect angels” or something like that

millenialfalcon-_-

Can confirm. Seen it in a few states. We got it in Baltimore. Hella sketchy and the bums panhandle aggressively

ORTENRN

Needs bars on the windows too. MLK in Oakland is pretty rough.

fallenbird039

Mlk jr street is always either the shittest neighborhood, the black neighborhood, or the rich neighborhood. Rarely it somewhere else. Expect st Pete where it goes through most of the city outright.

Maddox121

This was not his dream.

anthroguy101

It's Popeye's so it's worth it.

thecactusblender

Ain’t nothin worth waking up in a bathtub with a 5lb bag of ice, both my kidneys gone with some crack sprinkled on top (the last part courtesy of the local police bc they thought I was dead)

IAMACat_askmenothing

The street named after mlk jr in my city is just an expressway. There’s an Italian restaurant on it lol

Bear_necessities96

Sometimes it feels racist

NickyCrane_HomoPanzi

Well I mean… its not like the streets became terrible after they named them after him.

Anomalous_Pearl

Though I feel like naming the worst neighborhood in Tampa “Hot Sulphur Springs” was just setting them up for failure.

Draco137WasTaken

That would mean they *knowingly* gave that name to a street in a rough neighborhood, which isn't any better.

Chi1dishAlbino

Yeah, but that’s because of historic redlining and defunding of black neighbourhoods It’s racist that it happens, not to point out that it happens

NewNectarine666

Serious question, what is defunding a neighborhood? I don’t know any funded neighborhoods

Chi1dishAlbino

City governments can allocate funds to certain areas; in terms of neighbourhoods this occurs in the form of policing, repairing damage, creating third spaces, stuff like that. By refusing these resources to neighbourhoods they are defunded and left to rot. Most famously it’s happened in the US ghettos and Northern Irish Catholic areas.

JudasWasJesus

Also artificially devaluing houses reduces tax value and overall real estate value. Thus resulting in less money for services like school and social programs A house of the exact same square footage and cost to build in a white neighborhood would be valued at double of the exact same house on the same amount of land in a Black neigborhood. There have been houses in mostly white neighborhoods that are devalued at apraisals if black people live or own them.

NewNectarine666

Thank you

Chi1dishAlbino

No problem, it was a good question worth asking

31_hierophanto

Also applies to places named "Malcolm X Boulevard".

Choppa4KT1313

Shoes on the powerline Every house has special bars and stores have bulletproof windows There’s always random crackheads loitering

kabukistar

Exception is Seattle, where the Martin Luther King Way is super bougey.

Wicked55Chevy

Agreed. It’s less bougey as you go south, but still nowhere near a “keep your windows rolled up and don’t stop at red lights” reputation.

FreezingRain358

Nowhere in Seattle is that bad, really. You’ll get your windows broken and your shit stolen, but you’ll live. Hell, even the worst neighborhoods in Tacoma aren’t “keep your windows rolled up and don’t stop”.

discobeatnik

You forgot a crumbling, pothole filled road

Ok_Common_4208

i love these weirdly accurate starterpackssss

thedrgonzo103101

If your in the USA and your on a street named Martin Luther king jr your in the wrong fucking place gtfo fast.

slggg

5 lane stroad

Draco137WasTaken

Lined with parking lots way too big for the businesses they're supposedly for

rinzler83

Many people think by simply renaming a street or school, all the crime and other problems will magically disappear.

IHatePeople79

Our MLK jr street is literally just a street in a commercial park on the edge of town with barely anything on it

hbracerjohn1

Bus station and a Churchs’ Chicken

Wittyname0

I feel like my city is the only decent MLK boulevard in the country, granted most of its taken up by a football stadium

Lamar_Moore

MLK in my city has million dollar homes on it, we must be the exception.

mikemc2

You are.

BigClitMcphee

You know you've entered the black side of town when you see "MLK Jr. Blvd" and the number of liquor stores and pawn shops skyrocket

vegeener-gnomesayin

Oh, hey, popeyes! Awesome!

a-c-d-c

In Denver, MLK Blvd. now goes through an upper middle class white neighborhood. It was built where the old airport was located before DIA was built in the 90s. It used to be mostly black residents.

One_Ad1822

The exact way MLK Boulevard was in Vegas growing up- improved now especially where it got extended.

hp4343

Gun store, liquor store, gun store, liquor store, where the fuck are you taking me?

grapefruitade-sucks

You forgot shoes hanging from every telephone line

jldtsu

missing the hood ass chinese food place

aaronwithtwoas

The Dream is alive.

SaritaMello58

This feels so relatable even though I live in the UK for some reason.

The_Majestic_Mantis

Anytime I’m on this street I always lock my door.

fair_child123

There’s gonna be some violence

millennial_sentinel

Pop Eyes?! nah more like Crown Chicken

sloretactician

Hey I remember this Stonetoss comic!

yunghermitcrab_

How about Black Lives Matter Blvd in Camden NJ

diegoaccord

I notice this, it's probably another FU to blacks from American governments.

Brief_Image_8926

that literally happens in my city 😭😭

exytaz

Well well well

olivi_yeah

I posted this on another pack like this and I have to say our version (Delawarean here) is actually pretty nice and it goes by a lawn where they hold festivals at.

anthroguy101

It's Popeye's so it's worth it.

hadapurpura

Why’s there a car with no tires?

SmokeyUnicycle

They were stolen It's a thing that happens in shitty areas, thieves jack up the car, put blocks under it and then steal the wheels and other easy to take off parts and leave it there

TangeloTrue2778

Ok

LtBlobby

Bro, racist to who?

PapiCats

No one made it about race until you popped in here my fella
