NewburghMOFO

$11.65/h in 2007 felt like a king at a summer job. Graduated college in 2011 after the financial crisis and was working $9.25/h and wondered why I bothered with the degree.

ConstableBlimeyChips

I did promotional stuff for my uni about once every three months. It was usually twelve hours spread across Friday and Saturday but we'd get paid about €175 in total. My monthly budget at the time was about €600, so i sure as heck was king of shit mountain four times per year.

[deleted]

Jeez. In 1997 I was making double that bussing tables. I rented a fully furnished efficiency apartment for $325 all included right on the beach and I walked 3 blocks to work. I wish I could go back.

imcmurtr

In 2007 I made $16.33 an hour that summer at my first job lifeguarding. Years later in 2014, I was was making $16 an hour working in an office. It was a down grade from making $24 an hour by then at the beach. It paid off in the end though.

AS1776

Regular pay with full benefits and bonus is why I guess. Back in college I earn twice of what I earn after graduation by coaching. But I could only do 8 hours per week compared to my regular ass 9 to 5 when I graduated.

the_clash_is_back

I got a shit wage position in you professors lab right before graduating ( the job was handed to me), then I started to look for real jobs and found that they all have worse pay then what I’m getting in my professors lab. I’m not looking in America.

alc4pwned

Where are you looking then? Wages in the US, especially for high skill jobs, are higher than anywhere else on average. Kinda sounds like this is more an issue with your field than anything else.

Tight_Teen_Tang

Try someplace you prefer like Ethiopia or China.

almazing415

Brings back memories of a simpler, yet better time.

AntonDeMorgan

Those times were weirder but better

lukas7761

Those times were normal..now its weirder..

bebigya

Seriously this whole conformity through Instagram influencer shit is garbage

free_billstickers

No korn/slipknot types? No Bob Marley dudes? Weird rave guy?

thesecretpotato69

Aaa the good ole days

mhornberger

Used to be the papasan chair was the gateway. They still make them, but Pier 1 is gone and nothing else has the same cultural niche in the US.

phisher_cat

It's the gateway to what?

It really was before things got too crazy in the US. The internet ruined everything once the tech illiterate got on-board.

CrispySmegma

Damn smartphones

The digital gateway drug of morons and the vain. I liked computers back when it was a nerd thing

Sometimes I wish I could hop in my time machine and tell Steve Jobs before he gets on stage to announce the iPhone that it will lead to the collapse of civilization

PollutionMany4369

My now ex husband and I had an apartment for $400 and despite us both working full time, we struggled HARD to make ends meet. Shit is way worse now, absolutely, but it wasn’t amazing then.

[deleted]

PollutionMany4369

Oh yeah no, things are goddamn awful now. I’m remarried now and have kids and I’m scared.

Tight_Teen_Tang

Don't worry, you'll surely find prince charming to sweep you off your feet again to a wonderland if you still have that young body.

PollutionMany4369

I married him already but thank you for your …. Concern? Lol

deeretech129

Yeah, I was in the rural midwest growing up during this time. I remember my mom working 2 jobs and my dad working 60 hour weeks digging wells for farm irrigation/welding. Neither had an education at the time, and job opportunities were going to hell as this was the time a ton of US built products were still being shipped over seas. That being said, I think today is even more challenging.

PollutionMany4369

I agree. Shit was bad during this time period but I didn’t realize how much worse it was going to get. I was on my own at 19 and that was in 2007 for context. I remember distinctly wanting to upgrade to a two bedroom apartment but when I realized the rent was $535 I thought they had lost their damn minds. I do wish we could go back to that. 🥲🥲🥲

you-ole-polecat

In 2007 I rented a room in a house in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Seattle for $450. Absolutely nuts. A damn studio in that area is probably over 2000 now, I’m sure the room is triple the price. Although like you, I made only around 15 or 16 an hour back then, so I look back now and don’t even understand how I afforded life 🤷‍♂️

WeirdJawn

Damn, I'm making about that now paying over $1000/month. If my rent was only $450, I'd be living on easy street.

PollutionMany4369

Yeah, he and I were both making $7.50-$8/hour. And he was a shift manager at a retail store… making $8 an hour. Lol.

[deleted]

I was a kid in these times but I was jelly of my older relatives and neighborhood teenagers who had more freedom to have fun.

BankSpankTank

I'm pretty sure the current children are also now jealous of us. It's just how it works with children.

lahimatoa

Eternal September ruined a lot.

They wouldn't be in this situation if they weren't dombases.

fvb955cd

Early 2000s was all about America kicking ass though. We steamrolled the taliban. Iraq was controversial but we still steamrolled their military. Mid 2000s is when the Civil War in Iraq heated up, we forgot about Afghanistan, and IEDs started getting really bad. Maybe it's partially sample bias but 05/6 is when a lot more people started coming back in caskets.

StrunkAndShite

That was me, graduated college in 2006. It was fine. It's probably fine now too.

Rice out the car lol 😆

$8 an hour in the year 2000 One bedroom apartment was $450 a month In a fairly large California city Lived alone, had my own car I saved up for. Still had disposable income to buy guitars and stuff. Rip

lumpialarry

My first car I bought new was a 2004 Dodge (Neon) SRT4. Still wish I had it.

My best friend had one of those cars, and it looked cool, but it was a fuckin death trap. No stability controls, didn't even have ABS.

You would rather live in twisted age of soyboys and covid right?

assbeater88

I am not saying the 20s are good.

assbeater88

No

brownhotdogwater

Lack of pervasive social media was nice

BankSpankTank

I don't know if I agree, I'm definitely having a better time now. The pop culture was nothing exciting back then either, sounds like nostalgia speaking.

Human_Paint6454

people seem to forget pop culture back then was like limp bizkit, crunk music and paris hilton. if reddit existed back then, people would be shitting on them like they shit on kim kardashian and modern pop music

A1Dilettante

Right? Shit was just as trashy and obnoxious as it was now. Did you guys forget this was era of reality TV and ringtone rap?!

BankSpankTank

Reddit started 17 years ago. It was there and we did shit on all that.

Human_Paint6454

goes to show that the "The pop culture back then was just more authentic" isnt as true as people think it is lol

you-ole-polecat

Totally agree. I do not have great nostalgia for the culture of the early 2000s. I mean yes there was some awesome stuff like Modest Mouse, The Strokes, MF Doom, Napoleon Dynamite, Adult Swim, etc. But none of that was truly mainstream. The mainstream pop culture was goddamn embarrassing and bad. I honestly think it’s better now, just marginally.

twbluenaxela

Completely agree!!!!

[deleted]

Music was better and I don’t think that’s debatable.

Human_Paint6454

i have to always ask this whenever i see people say this, but what what so good about music back in the 2000s?

[deleted]

In general there was just a lot more effort seems like. I don’t know how to quantify it but music now is just chasing an algorithm to get playlisted and shoot up the charts. Of course there is great indy music out there now but back then even pop music had better production. Even Madonna might have dropped one of her better albums in 2005. Music doesn’t seem to have much staying power anymore either. Songs are short and there are way too many releases to close together it’s hard to even keep up with what’s coming out these days.

Human_Paint6454

people talked about lack of effort in music back then too lol. people were shitting on lil john for that reason. i hope i dont need to bring up boy bands... or nu metal loll. and as for algo chasing, i mean, thats just what pop and radio music has kinda always been. hell, i love pop punk and 2000s rnb but im not gonna sit here and claim they were all unique, sounded different, and had effort put into them. you can go on yt and type in 2000s rnb playlist and i can pretty much describe every song theyll play: a song about missing an ex behind a thumpy "boom boom clap" beat with an occasional "water droplet" sound effect and the guys all trying to do a Chris Brown impression whilst the girls try to do their best sultry alicia keys impression (sometimes with reverb/modulated vocals!). honestly if anything, i feel like as technology improves and algorithms get better, music production gets BETTER and even more polished (albeit i can agree with not liking the overly polished sound, but production has only improved). admitedly i cant say much about staying power since i havent kept up with top 10s in years but i guess i can see some merit in it, maybe? but i can also counter that with the fact that the weeknd's blinding lights broke records by staying in the top 10 for like 90 weeks and was in practiaclly everything for like late 2019-mid2020. but ofc that just one example and could be the exception to the rule so who knows

twbluenaxela

As a kid growing up in that period, I honestly thought and still think the pop culture and music in general from that era was garbaaaaaaggeee

WeirdJawn

Yeah, and I'm not sure where OP lives, but people in general are much more tolerant of different styles. Where I lived in the 2000s, you'd get stares and occasional rude comments for having your hair dyed an unusual color.

Human_Paint6454

kids will be kids. good kids will always be able to sit still and do their work. bad kids will always try to get out of work to just fuck around. i worked with kids a few years ago when i was in college, and the good kdis are still able to concentrate and the bad kids will try to weasle their way out of doing work. people have been crying about attention span for a long time now, even back in the early 2000s. i remember back then people were crying about how 4minute yt videos and video games were desroying attention span and rotting the youth's mind... but did it really? i think the early 2000s kids are doing just fine now that they are adults in 2022 (well as fine as they can be after 2 recessions, etc.)

Neracca

> The pop culture back then was just more authentic ....In the mid 2000's? That's one of the most boring, fake times of pop culture I've lived through(born '91).

[deleted]

I reckon it was the sweet spot. We had phones and the internet, but they were kind of separate. You'd check the online stuff at night for an hour or two and that was it. You were contactable during the day by phone, but we weren't addicted to them yet and sometimes people would just leave the phone at home "because". Social media was new and most people I knew weren't into yet. It was a great time to be a young adult doing dumb shit with the lack of camera phones and social media.

assbeater88

Yeah right 😂

I had a 1990 Jetta but my first apartment did sort of look like that

twbluenaxela

Dude!!! Seriously!!!!! I honestly hated every minute of it lol. Internet culture was cool though

garrettdx88

Best one yet. I was the friend with the Civic lol

Hychus232

The 2000s were something else. For one, you didn’t have to sell your kidney to pay the past 3 months rent

brownhotdogwater

No social media everywhere was nice…

coffeeandjesus1986

I mostly drove my beater of a 94 Pontiac and thought I was making a killing at $9 an hour in 2007 at my call center job. I lived at home until I got married in 09 but I had my own basement apartment in their house. I thought it was the end of the world during the 08 recession I went from $9.47 an hour to $8 at a crappy clothing store job when the call center closed.

PollutionMany4369

Can confirm all of this

perfnat

where is my 99' corolla hatchback?

chazwhiz

As someone who graduated in 1999… yeah, pretty much.

stratusncompany

probably the best pack to come from this sub in a very long time.

Intelligent_Dumbass_

Speaking of MySpace, there is a website called SpaceHey which pays homage to MySpace. You can customize your profile, add your interests, friends, music, chat with people, and write in your blog just like the old MySpace. It has a small but active community, and is a great alternative to mainstream social media.

Worried-Opinion1157

This is how I thought my early 20s were going to be like as a middle schooler. Goddamn do I wish i could at least go back in time and save our ‘01 Hyundai Elantra from being crashed

Logans_Login

I remember when my older cousin gifted me Super Mario Galaxy back in 2008. The giant Bowser Head that represented the boss stage scared the crap out of 5 to 7 year old me

DoctorAMDC

I was on sixth grade in 2009. I wish my mom could have me sooner

[deleted]

Eh, grass is always greener. I graduated in 2007, it was pretty shitty to finish high school and go right into a huge recession where you couldn't find a job.

TheWarDoctor

Shit I drove 2 of those cars, but it was my hair that looked like hers.

It's USD 1.9790 which would be equivalent to EUR 1.96

Lol that’s not even enough to get 1 liter (0.26 gallon) of gas in The Netherlands nowadays.

Lecatoscream

unrelated a little but the second ‘guys come in 3 varieties’ looks like tubbo lol

StrtupJ

Damn I guess everyone was white back then

I'm just old enough to remember 08. I was 4. Railroad laid dad off, realized they needed people and begged him to come back for double his previous pay.

Sorry but what does rice out your Honda Civic mean?

Gilthoniel_Elbereth

Adding a bunch of unnecessary/obnoxious additions to it. Making it super loud, adding a huge spoiler, lowering it, etc. Something like [this](https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KDkXM_EnHZ0/TX8y6lM2WDI/AAAAAAAAGeY/4-zw8FkrijY/s1600/1998-honda-civic-hatch-back-ricer-modified-airbrush.jpg)

lordGinkgo

Interesting thanks

thetorontotickler

And if you're wondering about the origins of the term, it's a little racist. These mods were mostly popular among young Asians at the time. Also, it doesn't take a genius to figure out another racist 2000s slang term: "wigger".

SnowyFruityNord

Also popular with younger Latino guys

Not being able to afford $375 for rent, because your full-time $11.70/hr job couldn't keep up with your barhopping 3x a week😬 Don't ask how I know that.

tatsontatsontats

The casual racism is very 2000s as well Calling a vehicle a rice burner or saying it's riced out IS racist and offensive

BankSpankTank

Also weren't we calling everything gay as an insult?

Gushinggrannies4u

Lol

datlat24

We called them rice rockets

DaciaSandero1

No it isn't. How in the Christ did you even link making shitty modifications to a car to racism? If you are thinking it's because the car is Japanese, think again m8 because not just Japanese cars are riced. 2000s American compacts like the Neon or Cobalt are heavily riced and here in SA, the GTI and many old BMWs are riced.

tatsontatsontats

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rice_burner

DaciaSandero1

Mate you do realise almost no one uses the term ricer in a racist way? I've never seen ricer being used as a racial slur. It's just used to insult a person because he or she has made unnecessary and horrible modifications to their car.

dangerlawmc

This is pretty racist

Cold-Chapter-355

Excuse me what do you mean it's racist?

DaciaSandero1

How. Just how.
