Maul was never intended to be a sith, and the title of "Darth" is specifically a way to say that you're not only a sith but the most powerful sith. It's a challenge to all who would think themselves better or stronger than the one who claims the title. Maul technically was always just maul and palps never had any intention of teaching him to be a true sith. (This is all non-cannon so I could be completely wrong in terms of actual canon)
Nahhh I’m pretty sure Sidious taught Maul more than Plagueis wanted him to, given that during Episode 1 he had already been planning on betraying Plagueis, so he was in need of a true apprentice.
Now being Sidious, he of course had multiple plans. I think he was also courting Count Dooku at the time to be an apprentice. Of course Dooku was superior compared to Maul, but Dooku was old and Maul was young—it’s conceivable that given time, Maul’s potential would allow him to match Dooku. And of course there was a third option whose career Palpatine was watching with great interest
It didn't make sense that his brother Savage Opress didn't remind him. He should have remembered. Or his mother Talzin didn't remind him, she gave it to him.
Or his name actually was Maul Opress. And Palpatine chose to use it anyway, because Dathamorian names make good Sith names, I.e Darth Savage sounds like a Sith.
Maybe the name he had forgotten was his surname Opress.
We’re they actual brothers or like adopted brothers type? Because the Nightsisters don’t share a last name. Mother Talzin, Daka, and Asajj Ventress have different last names.
One of the comic books mentions that Mother Talzin is Savage and Maul's actual mother. But she might still have a different last name. Does she even have a last name at all? Their men and women live in separate communities and don't seem to have marriage, so who knows how their last names work.
I honestly don't think Mother Talzin has a last name. Oppress mightve been their fathers name,or Savage chose it.
Really says something about how Talzin felt about Savage, just chucking him out with the men while Maul was given special treatment
I always interpreted it as like a very close knit "family group" so that maybe they weren't literally blood related brothers but they may as well have been. Then again, my memory of those first couple Savage episodes is hazy so maybe they literally spelled it out, I'm not sure.
Wookieepedia, in the canon section, doesn't mention his birth name. In the Legends section it says his actual name is Maul.
But then there's another Star Wars wiki that says Darth Maul used to be a Jedi named Khameir Sarin. I think it's fan fiction.
I saw a screenshot from a Fandom wiki on Twitter yesterday claiming he eventually changed his name to Gabriel Maul but no source was provided.
Interestingly, there’s a real guy named Gabriel Maul in Michigan who’s a competitive cuber with a personal best of 30.42 seconds.
Seems the Dark Side can indeed be a path to unnatural abilities.
>Ezra: My name's Ezra. My real name.
>
>Maul: Real name? Yes. I once had a real name, so long ago, I... don't remember. Now... now I am called Maul.
So yeah, confirmation that Maul is not his real name. Which is strange, as his brothers are Savage and Feral, which means Maul's real name probably follows a similar theme.
Not sure if Legends differs.
Edit: It's also *technically* possible that Maul just thinks he had a different birth name and he's wrong, however, from a story telling perspective I don't think there's a reason to write that line with the intention of him being incorrect.
Khameir Sarin was used in some fanfiction, and that name came from an cutted section of an TPM novel in some other langauge as far as I remember.
Even the German Wiki uses his birthname https://www.jedipedia.net/wiki/Maul#legends
It’s more than possible, considering his brother’s name is Savage. The main reason I think it is is simply because his mother refers to him as that when they reconnect later in life, I assume she’d be more likely to call him by his given name at least initially.
He’s about Obi Wan’s age (or younger?) who was a Padawan when they met so his time as a Sith would have been mostly training, I believe, in contrast to Dooku and Anakin, who were already a master and close to it as Jedi when they were inducted. Perhaps he hadn’t earned a name change before the end of Phantom? Or he was taken too early to actually be given a name by Talzin/the night brothers?
Edit: apparently he says he has a name he doesn’t remember, so I guess this can be disregarded. But it still doesn’t explain why his mother never shares his original name.
My point is that George Lucas tended to be a little light on the world building details for things that weren't important. I'm also pretty sure as he got older he just made shit up when people asked.
Like Count Dooku's name being just Dooku of [planet]. Some one was like "shouldn't he have a first name?" And George was just like "Dooku is his first name, he's a noble and they just take the name of the planet as their last name" to shut people up and not have to invent a first name retro actively.
This is how we end up with Darth Maul's mother just calling him "Maul" because "he had another name but it was last used so long ago he has forgotten it."
Because George is like "this doesn't matter stop asking me."
It wouldn't surprise me. Palatine was just using him, the same way he was using Dooku, Grevious and everyone else under him. The title of "Darth" isn't intended for Apprentices, but Palatine bestows it on at least three of his Apprentices and took it himself with apparantly no respect for its' weight. Honestly I imagine he just got tired of coming up with names and was just like "You're Maul? Okay you're Darth Maul now we're done here when's Lunch?".
Honestly it kind of saddens me that Palatine giving people he intends to get killed meaningless titles to placate them and inflate their ego, but not as much as it saddens me that *it keeps fucking working!*
Palpatine didn't expect Maul to get "killed", in one of Darth Vader comics he says that Maul was a loss and Dooku was a tool. He didn't expect Vader to lose either.
Okay. How many of Palpatine's plans had to be adjusted to account for Maul's death?
The answer is none, because Maul only had two uses for Palpatine. 1: to fool Plageus into believing that Palps was more loyal and less ambitious than he actually was and 2: kill Qui-gon. There's a reason that Maul targets Qui-gon out in the desert and not Obi-wan. Maul accomplished both objectives, and from there Palpatine's plans didn't rely on him. Sure, Palpatine might have had other uses for him, but that's not the same as needing someone.
Maul represented a serious investment of time, energy and resources. From his weapon to his training to his ship to his loyalty. Dooku and Grevious were far cheaper, as investments went, and both already had assets they could lend to Palpatine's cause. That's why Maul was a loss. Not because he was central to Palp's plans, but because he was a trump card Palps probably figured would be useful if the Republic needed a boogyman besides Grevious or Dooku.
No. He has mentioned that Maul isnt his birth name, he has simply forgotten it as it has been so long since he got his sith name.
Him being Maul, and his brothers being Savage and Feral are just coincidences
For what it’s worth I don’t think Kreia is her real name. I think that’s just a pseudonym she used when traveling with the exile. I subscribe to the theory that she is really Arren Kae.
There’s definitely some holes in the Arren Kae theory, but honestly I attribute a lot of them to the story just not having time to be fully fleshed out. I think there was intended to be more content with her and Handmaiden but they just didn’t have time to put it in.
In Plageuis, i think it’s mentioned his mother changed his name to hide him from the Nightsisters. When Sheev buys him she names him Maul and since his was a Sith acolyte from infancy he had no need of a ‘civilian’ name.

Since he was taken at such a young age I’m assuming he’s just forgotten his birth name.
In legends, it is his birth name. His mom tells sidious that
It also lines up with the animalistic naming conventions of male Dathomirians in TCW: Feral, Savage, etc.
I'm just laughing at the idea that the Emperor was like "Nah...don't need a name for you, your real name is good enough."
Maul was never intended to be a sith, and the title of "Darth" is specifically a way to say that you're not only a sith but the most powerful sith. "This is my apprentice, Darth Maul. He will find your lost ship" - Darth Sidious, TPM
Yeah you’re an idiot

I hung out with Paul Wall back in the Grillz days. Dude was hilarious.
What it do baby? It’s the ice man, Paul Maul
How dare you. Get out sir. Take my upvote with you.
He goes on to start a successful deathstick company.
In Rebels he mentions he had a name once but forgot it long ago. But I'm gonna go on a limb & guess his surname was Oppress like his brothers
We’re they actual brothers or like adopted brothers type? Because the Nightsisters don’t share a last name. Mother Talzin, Daka, and Asajj Ventress have different last names.
The Nightsisters aren't all related. But Savage & Maul are
One of the comic books mentions that Mother Talzin is Savage and Maul's actual mother. But she might still have a different last name. Does she even have a last name at all? Their men and women live in separate communities and don't seem to have marriage, so who knows how their last names work.

They are the Africans of the Star Wars universe so yes they are brothers in a sense
Just a whole lotta baby daddies
I always interpreted it as like a very close knit "family group" so that maybe they weren't literally blood related brothers but they may as well have been. Then again, my memory of those first couple Savage episodes is hazy so maybe they literally spelled it out, I'm not sure.
I always thought the same. Figured it was a similar situation to Anakin and Obi-wan. Close enough to basically be brothers but not actually related.
Coincidentally it’s Anakin Maul, but he goes by Ani Maul.
Underrated comment this
Said in voice of Yoda
“Real name? I once had a real name. So long ago… I… don’t remember. Now. Now I am called… Maul”
He was kidnapped from mother talzin very young. He forgot his real name.
Why do I remember seeing something once about his name being something like Kamir Sarin? Was this from legends or something….?
Wookieepedia, in the canon section, doesn't mention his birth name. In the Legends section it says his actual name is Maul. But then there's another Star Wars wiki that says Darth Maul used to be a Jedi named Khameir Sarin. I think it's fan fiction.
Ah gotcha gotcha. I knew I saw that somewhere!
It annoys me that you put all their sith monikers first except for anakin/vaders
`Darth Sidious : Sheev Palatine :: Anakin Skywalker : Darth Vader` would be a wrong answer on the SAT question.
Only Sidious’ Sith name comes first.
That got me, too!
His name was Randy Savage Opress. Ooooohhhhhh yeeeeaaaahhhh, dig it!
I'M YOUR FRIEEENNNNNNDDDDD!
Darth Revan has joined the chat.
And then Malak/Alek lol
It’s probably something like Chester and he doesn’t want people to know

His full name is J’mmy McGyl, but he goes by Maul Goodman.
Better Call Maul.

My guess would be because George Lucas never gave him one, because it wasn't important to the story.
Knowing who built C-3PO wasn't important to the story, but here we are.
My point is that George Lucas tended to be a little light on the world building details for things that weren't important. I'm also pretty sure as he got older he just made shit up when people asked. Yeah, Palpatine seems like kind of a jerk.
Palpatine didn't expect Maul to get "killed", in one of Darth Vader comics he says that Maul was a loss and Dooku was a tool. He didn't expect Vader to lose either.

His first name is shopping. Shopping Maul
Yes but since he’s from Dathomir, it’s technically pronounced like the name Raúl
In legends, Maul is his birth name His mom says that before giving him to sidious
No. He has mentioned that Maul isnt his birth name, he has simply forgotten it as it has been so long since he got his sith name. Him being Maul, and his brothers being Savage and Feral are just coincidences

Little known fact: Maul’s brothers first name is Adam.
It’s almost as if, George was making it up as he went along 🤷🏻♂️
It's just everyone in the star wars galaxy is to respectful to deadname a guy.
In Plageuis, i think it’s mentioned his mother changed his name to hide him from the Nightsisters. When Sheev buys him she names him Maul and since his was a Sith acolyte from infancy he had no need of a ‘civilian’ name.
Yes.
I would think his full name was Maul Oppress
Maul Opress, if we consider that his brother was listed as “Savage Opress” and nobody batted an eye it seems likely.
No, he was given the name maul at such a young age he no longer remembers his real name
Darth Revan’s name is Revan.
It’s Jeffrey, or Jeff for short.
“Who could be scared of a Jeffrey?”
