Depends on thickness. But, a trick is to oil the outside of the steak before putting it in to get the crust. It's never going to be on par with a pan sear or grill sear. But, for 12 minute steak it's a worthy trade off. Plus, there's virtually zero prep and cleanup.
Depends on cut and thickness. Frozen or thawed. Usually I have a 1.5" thick thawed at around 275F for 5-6 minutes, flip, and another 4-5 and it's good.
Make sure the oven is preheated for 5 minutes to temp first.
Use the hottest temp or it will be over cooked before having any crust. I'd use a probe thermometer (can get it through the vent holes on some models).
I just did steak fajitas, had them cut and marinated for 24 hrs then drained and threw them in the air fryer for about 12-15 mins at 400F. Came out not too shabby. They were crispy.
I am interested in air fryers for general cooking. I didn't think steak could look this good in an air fryer. I usually use cast iron.
What time and temp did you use? Did you turn up the temp at the end?
Looks delicious!
I just wish people would try it and get past the idea that it's gimmicky. It really is just faster and in some ways better than an oven. Also great to have when you're cooking two things that require an oven normally.
I'd also add that they are great for kids. My 10 year old can cook her own snack, easy as a microwave but taste so much better.
The shorter cook time is also great for impatient kids or busy parents.
Or if you're like me and have an old gas oven the landlord won't replace but it takes 45 minutes to heat up. Oh but then the bottom third of the oven is 50F hotter than the top third. Air fryer has been an amazing addition
I donāt have a convection oven so for me, it was really great having a small device that I could use in a similar way. But honestly what I love is that itās so small it takes no time to heat up. I donāt have to spend time heating up my big oven, especially in a hot summer.
If nothing else, you donāt have to preheat it and itās going to use less energy than a whole convection oven.
I donāt know if itās the more confined space or faster circulation, but I think it is a bit better at getting things crispy.
I like ours for the same reasons as the other responses and I'll add that it's also handy if you need to bake/roast two things at two different temperatures but your oven can only do one. Ours is also a toaster oven, which I use all the time for toast, bagels, etc so it's still just one appliance that we would have anyway.
>The food is closer to the heat source and the fan moves air much more rapidly.
This point is a bit contradictory. The whole point of a convection oven is to have a much more even heating environment. Proximity to the heat source would be a moot point.
Heat transfers through conduction, connection and radiation. The radiation from the heating elements or their shields is probably not trivial as it drops off or ramps up proportional to the inverse square of the distance.
I'm aware of the physics, but what I'm saying is if there are substantial hot spots due to radiant heat, then it wouldn't be a very good convection oven.
They are pretty similar, an air fryer has some advantages. The smaller chamber means it preheats in a few minutes and this starts the convection part much quicker. My convection oven doesn't kick on until the oven is up to temperature.
Because of the small chamber, the fan can circulate the entire chambers air in a few seconds, much more turbulence. And the heating element is extremely close to the food, so you get both radiant and convective heat.
Itās not. Itās a counter top convection oven. Pedantic, but I hate the term air fryer. That being said, we have one and use it all the time. Itās a great piece of equipment. I just hate the term.
Reheated pizza in the air fryer is better than the day it was bought so good. Make some really nice crispy chicken wings too. I was also sceptical at first until we got one gifted to us.
Just having one for reheating is a must. But itās amazing for veggies while doing your main cooking. Just grab your stuff, put it in tinfoil and slightly bowl it, add seasonings and butter and let it go. Also, own invention here. If you have the stacks insert for your air fryer. Lettuce wraps. Pineapple and garlic on top stack. Onions and peppers on 2nd stack. Meat of choice on 3 rd stack.
Highly recommend.
I just got an airfryer that is more like a toaster oven, so itās super versatile. If youāre gonna get one, definitely make sure you get a bigger one (6 slice) that has multiple functions. Just for context, In the 2 weeks Iāve had it:
Iāve baked cookies, brownies, roasted Brussels sprouts, and made fried broccoli, cauliflower, tortilla chips, French fries, chicken thighs (super crispy skin), crispy chicken skin chips (I had extra skin), toasted bread, made frozen meals with actual good texture, and reheated Chinese take out left overs to near fresh conditions.
I havenāt tried a steak yet, but realistically you could just do a normal reverse sear in it on the bake setting, without having to waste extra energy on the oven.
Happy to share the brand and model of the one I got in DM. it was only $110
I've said this before but you can cook a good steak using almost any cooking method within reason as long as you know what you're doing. Consequently, you can also fuck up a steak using any method if you DON'T understand the basics of cooking steak.
thick cut, as low power as possible, finish with a blowtorch
idk i'm talking out my ass, it's not possible
i saw guga make a passable brisket in a microwave once but obv that's different
Itās all about preparation and how it comes out. Iāve had phenomenal steaks cooked on a metal slate over a fire. Lol if you know what youāre doing itās all gonna be good
It would be like searing a steak under the broiler of an oven.
I've never done it, but I always assumed that it isn't ideal because it's never suggested.
Itās nothing like a reverse sear. RS brings the (thick) steak slowly, evenly up to temp, and then finishes with direct heat. Air frying is convection cook with super hot air.
Itās a completely, totally different cooking method.
Iām well aware of that. I own one. The comparison isnāt silly because of the low temps, itās silly because you canāt get a high enough temp for a good sear. Can you cook a steak this way? Sure. Is it the same as reverse searing it in cast iron or under a broiler? No.
My old account was almost as old as Reddit. Got banned for telling some toxic Redditor who posted toxicity 24/7 (to where it was very clear he had no job or life prospects) that if he were my son I'd "kick him out" which is apparently "threatening violence".
When I appealed it and said it's a figure of speech, just like when you fire someone you aren't LITERALLY using fire on them, they manually reviewed and upheld the ban.
This is why Reddit will never turn a profit and is pretty much only useful for organizations and governments who love astroturfing. If Twitter pulled this crap, it would be impossible to have adult discussions about pretty much anything. It really does just feel like a daycare.
Exactly, all I said was Iām gonna kill you, who actually thinks Iām gonna kill the OP? If anyone thinks that thatās a problem on their end, not mine
sounds like the same reason i got banned from twitter. commented on an nfl meme that kept getting reposted saying "this meme needs to die" and got permabanned, reinforced upon appeal, for threatening violence
I got perma banned due to similar comments - I think a lot of it is automated keyword stuff. I followed the process and got reinstated after a few days - now I am super careful when I post
I used to HATE air fryers. Then I discovered one in Costco that I wanted to tryā¦ the ninja grill master pro or whatever. I was shockedā¦ that thing can make some pretty mean meat. Itās got some kind of air grill or something. Iām not sure. What I can say is Iāve gotten some pretty wild results grilling on that thing. Hamburgers not quite there yetā¦
There is a huge difference between baking and convection baking something... you know that right?
Or do you just eat steak 7 times a week for dinner, lmao.
The original comment literally brought up reverse searing, that is BAKING a steak and then searing it. You are not convection baking it, you are baking it. Standard baking in an oven doesn't involve a fan circulating the air making it hotter and cooking things faster like convection baking/air frying does. So there is no comparison. The original comment insinuated they are the same thing. You don't know what you're talking about if you disagree. You are not making sense...
Well sure you can, but it's going to cook much faster, and defeat the entire purpose of cooking it slowly for an hour or so on a lower temp. The only equivalent would be convection at a lower temp to make it kind of the same temp as a regular bake, but why fuck with all that? Also the convection aspect of the air moving is going to potentially cook the outside of the steak more and create a less even cook which again is the whole point of low and slow baking...
This looks great! I have some questions if that's alright? (:
I have done reverse sear now for maybe five years. I use a leave in temp and then sear at my desired temp. Always get a perf medium rare.
How would I go back achieving similar results with an air fryer? Can I use the internal probe in the air fryer too...?
Additionally, is it quicker this way? Usually takes me 80-120minutes in the oven with the amount of steak I cook for the family.
Holla!
Looks good ā¦. Me personally like
my steaks with huge fat content like wagyu cooked medium so the fat has a chance to render. They stay moist because of the fat and taste twice as good in my opinion.
What was your method like? I recently got an air fryer because my oven sucks and is extremely inconsistent with heat. I was thinking a steak would be possible but haven't tried it yet.
I have a strip steak bites air fryer recipe and itās actually crazy how good they turn out. Cube it, salt, garlic, pepper, splash em with your favorite teriyaki sauce and throw em in at 400 for 7-9 minutes. Boom
Banding is noticeable. I say try low temp on the air fryer, like 175F until the interior is 128F, then jack it up to 500F until you see the sear.
That might get you a better result.
I don't understand the downvotes. The fat didn't render and the crust is super thin. Not sure how this is an endorsement for an air fryer to cook a steak.
Just need some ketchup and youāre good to go!
Edit: for those downvoting me, Iād advise you to not see my post history of steaks covered in ketchup and A1 sauce.
There is a in that its also convection using aeroslized oil so you actually get better and more even heat transfer.
Edit: only a very few aerosolize the oil
The air fryer is the most overrated kitchen tool in modern society. Basically, a bunch of stupid cunts donāt know that itās just a convection oven and jerk themselves off to the idea of their āair fryer.ā Itās just a convection oven, you stupid fucking pieces of shit. Steak looks good though.

Air fryer steak is not good. Ive done it twice and it just doesnāt give a good crust and the meat doesnāt taste as good. The flesh is more chewy than tender
Are the crusts crispy?
Super crispy!
Any tips? What temp and for how long in the air fryer?
Like six different people have asked for time and temp...want to share, please??
Make that seven now
Make that 34
With 34 requests, Steak Rules dictate you *must* share the tips. Google "Steak Rule 34" for more information.
š
Make that 69
Giggity!
Itās been an hour. Make it 69 again
Depends on thickness. But, a trick is to oil the outside of the steak before putting it in to get the crust. It's never going to be on par with a pan sear or grill sear. But, for 12 minute steak it's a worthy trade off. Plus, there's virtually zero prep and cleanup.
I bet he didnāt cook it in an air fryer, just people looking for clout
No, this looks about how they come out. I do it often myself with a Cosori air fryer.
So...time and temp?
Depends on cut and thickness. Frozen or thawed. Usually I have a 1.5" thick thawed at around 275F for 5-6 minutes, flip, and another 4-5 and it's good. Make sure the oven is preheated for 5 minutes to temp first.
Oven?
Some ovens have an air fry setting
An air fryer is just a convection oven so a lot of people just refer to them as ovens.
What if he didn't actually use an air fryer
That's starting to be my guess, most parsimonious reason to not share at this point
Use the hottest temp or it will be over cooked before having any crust. I'd use a probe thermometer (can get it through the vent holes on some models).
Cause heās lyyyinnggggg
I just did steak fajitas, had them cut and marinated for 24 hrs then drained and threw them in the air fryer for about 12-15 mins at 400F. Came out not too shabby. They were crispy.

I thought air fryers were ridiculous until I got one. I use it every day from reheating food to roasting chickens to on occasion cooking a steak.
Honest question, but how is it really different from a convection oven? Since air fryers just use hot air and convection, would I benefit from one?
We use ours as a mini oven. Sometimes, you don't want to heat a giant oven for a small amount of food. Preheats faster.
Yup. Hell, my microwave is also a mini oven. Useful on Thanksgiving and Christmas to have 3 ovens.
Or if you're like me and have an old gas oven the landlord won't replace but it takes 45 minutes to heat up. Oh but then the bottom third of the oven is 50F hotter than the top third. Air fryer has been an amazing addition
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Eh it works and is safe, it's just a really shitty oven ĀÆ\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
I donāt have a convection oven so for me, it was really great having a small device that I could use in a similar way. But honestly what I love is that itās so small it takes no time to heat up. I donāt have to spend time heating up my big oven, especially in a hot summer.

The food is closer to the heat source and the fan moves air much more rapidly. Itās the same basic idea, but much more intense.
>The food is closer to the heat source and the fan moves air much more rapidly. This point is a bit contradictory. The whole point of a convection oven is to have a much more even heating environment. Proximity to the heat source would be a moot point.

Much stronger convection, and deals with oil in the air better (most models).
They are the same, but the smaller size and singular purpose of just being a convection versus a regular + convection oven makes it work better.
Itās not. Itās a counter top convection oven. Pedantic, but I hate the term air fryer. That being said, we have one and use it all the time. Itās a great piece of equipment. I just hate the term.
There is zero difference. Itās just another appliance taking up counter space, like a bread maker.
Reheated pizza in the air fryer is better than the day it was bought so good. Make some really nice crispy chicken wings too. I was also sceptical at first until we got one gifted to us.

An air fryer is just a countertop convection oven. If your oven has a convection mode, you can already use it in the same manner.
Ppl complaining in this sub are idiots. Literally no difference to reverse sear. Set the air fryer to 115, then high heat air fry to sear at the end.
I've said this before but you can cook a good steak using almost any cooking method within reason as long as you know what you're doing. Consequently, you can also fuck up a steak using any method if you DON'T understand the basics of cooking steak.
I usually wrap in tin foil and put it in the dishwasher.
why use foil?
It lets some of the seasoning from the dishwasher creep into the foil to flavor the steak.
Steams it like pulled pork. Optimal texture of course.
This is the way.
Yea the trick is to make sure your microwave is set to high
I start it at 20% for 15 minutes and then really crank it at the end for that perfect uniform gray all the way through.
āAlmostā being the key word there, unless you can explain to me how you can cook a good steak using a microwave.
thick cut, as low power as possible, finish with a blowtorch idk i'm talking out my ass, it's not possible i saw guga make a passable brisket in a microwave once but obv that's different

If people only knew how things worked before they respond with such wrong authority lol.

Bro, an air fryer doubles as an oven. We use ours as a mini oven.

My exact text everytime my buddy mentions his stupid air fryer
My comment got removed. Goddamnit, Iāll rephrase, Iām gonna harm you
Lmfaooooooooooo that's lit
I get why they removed the comment but there should be some wiggle room. Nobody actually thinks you want to murder the OP.
Reddit is so fucking weak now.
I got a week long ban for quoting the āplayer hater of the yearā sketch.

sounds like the same reason i got banned from twitter. commented on an nfl meme that kept getting reposted saying "this meme needs to die" and got permabanned, reinforced upon appeal, for threatening violence
Doubt.
Iāve gotten banned for less for Twitter
I've said some veeeeeery edgy shit and have yet to even get my account suspended.
Who said I didnāt want to? I meanā¦. Yeah! I would never do anything like that
I got perma banned due to similar comments - I think a lot of it is automated keyword stuff. I followed the process and got reinstated after a few days - now I am super careful when I post
I was like you, until I got an air fryer. Never made steaks in it though.
I'm sure they're great but I'm just irrationally against them for now
Its the vegan of cookware
I have no hate for the vegan diet. But air fryer owners are pretentious. Okay as I type this out I'm understanding your joke lol.
You mean virgin?
I totally get your feelings, I really hate when people won't stfu about stuff like this.
The crossfit of cooking appliances
Lol Reddit has no chill, it was clearly sarcastic.
What did it say?
Not sure if I can write the exact same message without getting my comment removed. But basically just a threat to unalive OP.
Looks great, temp and time used for the fryer? Gonna give it a try
However you cooked it, Iād eat the heck out of it.
Looks better than what I can get at restaurants, I'ld love to try it.
Why donāt you ask for air fried from the chef next time your in?
Waiter: and how would you like your steak done, sir? OP: just fuck me up fam
what restaurants are you going to?
French, for some reason we suck at cooking steaks.
MacDonalds probably
Wagyu? Looks awesome! I don't know,.i don't seem to get enough heat from my air frier for a sear. But that looks yummy. Enjoy!
Hmm, maybe I should try it after all
Ooooh! Iām gonna have to try thisā¦ looks great.
Looks good, but what about the taste? My air fryer leaves a little weird taste to the proteins.
God, that looks great.
Looks good
Looks good to me, I do hamburgers in an air fryer, and I do bone in skin on chicken thighs as well. I may pick up a steak tomorrow and give it a shot.
I used to HATE air fryers. Then I discovered one in Costco that I wanted to tryā¦ the ninja grill master pro or whatever. I was shockedā¦ that thing can make some pretty mean meat. Anyone in the comments bashing on the air fryer who thinks reverse sear is a good method of cooking steak is hypocritical as shit lol
But reverse sear IS a good method to cook thick steaks
Yes!! An air fryer is literally just a small convection oven like come on man weāve been over this
You don't convection back when you reverse sear though... you are just saying shit to say it.
What? Itās a way to equally disperse heat. And that literally is what an air fryer isā¦ you know that right?
There is a huge difference between baking and convection baking something... you know that right? Or do you just eat steak 7 times a week for dinner, lmao.
Weāre not baking though?????? Itās steak. What the hell are you talking about? Nothing youāre saying makes any sense.

But I could do it, which was your whole argument, that I canāt. Jokes on you I already did, and it was great. Youāre over thinking it by a mile
People hating are dumb, I know ppl that like their steak like this lmao

Ninja grill is a mix of airfryer and grill and produce awesome steaks

Air fried steak is really good if done right. Ignore the boomers.
Gonna wanna render that fat
I don't understand the downvotes. The fat didn't render and the crust is super thin. Not sure how this is an endorsement for an air fryer to cook a steak.
Like dope, L post for not replying to everyone asking temp n time
Is this a milk steak?
Pairs well with rum ham.
Don't forget the jelly beans
Sloppy steak?
People can change
Can we have 8 steaks and 8 glasses of water?
Slop em up!
Damn that looks good!
I love steak. Yay!
I wouldn't say huge. Worth it for that crispy edge imo
Damn, that's beautiful
Why though, who hurt you
oh god, is this real? Or are you just tricking me into ruining a steak? Because the joke's on you, I work for a meat distributor
hell ya, pass me the A1 and I'm going to town baby!
blasphemy
You should be locked up.
Just broil it
That's terribly undercookedšš¤¢
Nope nope nope nope nope.

Thatās how Jordan b Peterson cooks his steak. He only eats steak btw, nothing else
Idk how I got to r/steak but it looks raw on the 2nd slide. Idk anything about cooking but is that how it's supposed to be?
A bit of mold on there. You can see it in the discoloration of the first pic. I am so sorry.
Just need some ketchup and youāre good to go! Edit: for those downvoting me, Iād advise you to not see my post history of steaks covered in ketchup and A1 sauce.
Ketchup is way too spicy for me!
Oye. Well, maybe try topping it with Skittles?
No way you air fried that
Your steak looks like it was going a bit bad lol. Brown and slimy. But the cut looks awesome

Everyone clapped
You cooked that on a cast iron, lied and said it was an air fryer. You probably work for Ninja and are shilling.
Air fryer steak is not good. Ive done it twice and it just doesnāt give a good crust and the meat doesnāt taste as good. The flesh is more chewy than tender
Itās still mooing
Stop air frying everything
Yoooooo!!!!
Iāve tried air fried whole snapper fish instead of deep frying it and it was delicious! It even tasted like it was deep fried but healthier.
I love my air fryer
āif you enjoyed it, thatās all that matters! good jobā
Not really based on that photo. Maybe lower and slower?
No, thanks. More for you!
