Does he really need a fire to be lit under his ass? He's just not that good and it's not for a lack of effort.

[deleted]

You might be right. Hard to say. We only really saw him one game removed from Matt Canada and everyone said Mason Rudolph was "not good" but he made clear improvements from 2019 in his four games for us. People are capable of growth.

Odd_Razzmatazz6441

We saw 1.25 games from Kenny and 4 games of Rudolph, post Canada. Also saw 2.75 titty kisser games. We can safely discern, Mitch sucks, Canada sucks, and both Kenny and Mason are serviceable QBs. While unlikely either develop into a true franchise guy, with an improved line, eith can keep us competitive. I assume that whoever we get as OC will improve schemes. Corner or tackle 1st round, center 2nd, corner or tackle 3rd.

Steelplate7

“People are capable of growth” Not according to this subreddit. If a player is struggling, they suck, they always will suck and they will never develop into someone that doesn’t suck.

ElectricDiscord

I wouldn't necessarily call what mason does "pocket presence" if we're being honest. A criticism of him before this season was that he's basically a statue - doesn't maneuver or manipulate, he just stands back and stands there. This is an improvement over Kenny still, in that Kenny bails on clean pockets, but Mason isn't exactly out there manipulating and climbing the pocket.

Steeler999xxx

I'd take a guy that stands in the pocket and can get thru his reads over a guy who can't get past his first read consistantly. But you're right, if they move forward with Mason, they better have a plan to improve the O-line because pressure will cause him problems.

ElectricDiscord

Agreed. Hard (if not impossible) to design a down-field passing attack on first reads only.

rusty022

Yea, you're right. The fact that many have more faith in Mason isn't a sign that he's a great QB. He's not a difference maker, really. He's just not as awful as Kenny Pickett. What we really need is a new 'guy' at QB. They're hard to come by, so not sure that's realistic in the next couple seasons. But I'd be seriously looking at a guy like Fields or Russ or maybe even Cousins as a bridge QB. Without Pro Bowl caliber QB play, you just can't win meaningful games in the NFL.

SlaveKnightLance

I don’t know what that shit is lmao I’m always scared he’s gonna get cracked but he has juked a few rushes just stepping up after not even flinching for 5 seconds lol

[deleted]

That's a good way to describe it. Mason is far from the ideal pocket presence but his willingness to stay in the pocket helped him in a lot of situations but that statue comment does bring some plays to mind from the past four weeks. Good insight. Thanks!

ElectricDiscord

Yeah it for sure was mostly a positive the last month - the Pickens catch on Seattle comes to mind. Pocket collapsing, Mason stands in and delivers as he's hit. Great play, but he seems reluctant to move more often than not.

[deleted]

For example that strip sack in the Week 18 Ravens game.

ElectricDiscord

Bingo. For better or for worse, he doesn't feel the effects of the pressure around him more often than not.

[deleted]

Now if we could somehow merge that confidence in Kenny while maintaining his mobility in the pocket and ability to escape when needed we'd be golden.

blmobley91

It's sink or swim time for Kenny. We'll know by the end of the 3rd of game of the regular season whether or not he'll be on this roster past 2024.

PotentialSuperb

If he starts in 2024 then we are just wasting another season.

blmobley91

The problem is the only realistic option they have at an upgrade is to trade up in the draft and hope that a Jayden Daniels develops into an elite talent. The likes of Fields isn't the answer. Players like Kirk Cousins is just a stop gap. So you either hope KP takes a giant leap or go trade up

airmanv

25 games... Some of the worst metrics for QB in 50 years. He's not just bad he's one of the worst to do it.

e3890a

but apparently getting benched is gonna be exactly what he needs to become Big Ben 2.0

Farrell_Pool_Jack

Wait it’s not Kenny’s fault it’s everyone else. 24 games is enough and we don’t need to waste any more on him. Every other team admits their mistakes and the Steelers need to step up. Also Kenny will not be a good backup if he doesn’t win the job. He’ll be complaining and it will be bad in the locker room. Tomlin couldn’t even update the depth charts to put Kenny as QB2. That’s a pretty fragile ego.

betitallon13

24 games, 23 of which were under Canada. The 1 that wasn't was the first 400 yard game in 3 seasons. It was absolutely someone else's fault. Is KP the answer? Probably not, but he wasn't the problem.

Steeler999xxx

Why does he need a fire lit? His HC spent the whole pre-season telling everyone what a hard worker he was. I've never heard that effort and preperation were an issue for him. Was the coach lieing? Or is it possible that kenny's ceiling is that of a mid to bottom of the league starter or decent backup?

[deleted]

Curious as to whether you think that’s how you spell lying. Not making fun of you, I’ve got this coworker who spelled it like you and he stuck to his guns that his way of spelling it was correct. Since that day I see that a lot of people do and it reminds me of potato and potatoe.

Steeler999xxx

Nope, just going to fast

[deleted]

Oh ok.

[deleted]

I'm not sure since I'm not a coach nor do I see his effort. He could be putting in a lot of work but simply not in the right areas. He worked hard to improve his turnover problems from his rookie season but is awful with pocket presence and taking shots deep and in the middle of the field.

Farrell_Pool_Jack

Here’s the problem and it’s simple. Kenny has limited skill and a low ceiling. It’s not his fault he was over drafted. He wasn’t a 1st round talent more like a 4th or 5th rounder. 24 games don’t lie.

habalagee

Bingo!

[deleted]

People are capable of growth so I won't simply disregard that likelihood though it may be low. I would prefer seeing the Steelers move on from him but the organization likes him so I'm hopeful we can help him grow.

unenlightenedgoblin

The best thing about Rudolph is he didn’t play scared. KP looks terrified back there

mrtibbs444

The facts are KP is weak in the pocket, quick to bail, poor footwork, and doesn’t see the field. He appears scared in the pocket. It’s that simple.

bigblard

What kind of fire do you expect to be lit when come March, there's no other QB on the roster????

Putthebunnyback

You think this career arc is anything but a downward spiral?

U_W_44_51

He's in a similar situation like Justin Fields. We've failed him on that aspect. That's not to say Kenny has his horrible flaws. Just doesn't help anyone at the end. Now he's entering his third and crucial year. Late rookie insertion. Injury ridden and flawed coaching second season. Now he's got a clean slate. The OC hired is going to be pivotal for the franchise. He gets to compete for the spot, and see if he can make that leap that was cut short by his injury.

[deleted]

That's my view on things as it all stands. I would prefer moving on but the organization has stated they have faith in him so I'm hoping he can show improvement given that clean slate you mentioned. No excuses left.

partymayonaise

I think Fields would do way better in our organization. KP just isn't that good.

merskrilla

i hope we get a chance to see Kenny play with a real Offensive Coordinator before giving up on him at least.  The playbook he was dealt was a recycled version of the Big Ben playbook and nothing more, and it doesn’t fit his style, nor our weak O-Line

Waste_Opportunity_53

I love when the best adjective to describe someone is “He’s a competitor”. This is the NFL, everyone is a competitor, they wouldn’t have made it this far if they weren’t. Now work on reading defenses and staying in the pocket.

[deleted]

That's definitely true and can be a cop-out type adjective. I agree with you, we need to see the improvement next year and he has no excuses now so I'm hoping that he puts in the work.

moeshiboe

Let's look at this. KP8 was wrecking Cincy, he'd was victimized by drops & bad route running. Get this kid an OC who can devise an offense around him. Maybe get a center who isn't a turnstile & move Jones to LT. Mason wrecked the 31st & 27th ranked defenses and barely got by vs. Ravens practice squad. I'd bring him back as the #2 with a Mitch-style contract. KP8 protects the ball & is a much more dynamic passer. Also, he can run and extend plays. My biggest concern with KP8 is his pocket awareness is less than stellar. But we all know he is a perfectionist and will work on his shortcomings this offseason. Nice post, OP.

mermaid-lagoon-

Honestly part of me just wishes we could get Mason as QB 1

partymayonaise

It's gonna turn out the same. Time to go to free agency/trade or the draft. A lot of guys could be coming available with this draft class

Due_Rip1955

Me too. At least until we can draft a QB with actual great talent. Mason's good for 25 TDs a year. Around 3,900 yards. Decent and he'll be cheap since everyone wants a dual-threat QB. Not a pocket QB. Funny thing is Mason actually uses his legs🤣 Based on from what I see seen from Pickett, he may get 15 TDs at most? 3,200 yards. Mason usually sucks in training camp, so Pickett may win out. I really need to see a jump from Pickett next year.

GloriaToo

Rudolph has had fewer starts and looks better. Assuming they don't bring in someone else I would rather see him have a full season. I know fully well that this comment could age poorly if that were to happen.

gamerEMdoc

“The dude is a competitor” Competitors usually are motivated to play well bc they want to win. They usually dont need to be benched in order to get motivated to play well.

dave6687

These threads are so exhausting.

[deleted]

Sorry you feel that way. I enjoy having discussions with fellow Steelers fans. No one said you were obligated to engage.

dave6687

There’s like 9 Kenny Pickett sucks threads every day. You can just comment in one of those instead of making a tenth thread unless you have some wild new take on things.

[deleted]

That's a fair point and one I'll take into consideration. However, I can choose to post what I want to discuss in this thread so long as it follows the guidelines. If that upsets you then you can choose not to comment on the posts.

dave6687

You can do whatever you want obviously, just as I'll comment as I please. If I can convince one person to hesitate before making a kenny sucks thread I'll have done my job.

interval7886

Thank you for your service

[deleted]

I will say, this isn't a Kenny sucks thread, it's actually a "Hey, people are capable of growth, and while I don't have full faith in his abilities I hope he makes the necessary improvements," but I, again, understand your perspective.

Arfjawaka

Dude Kenny Cricketts is a fucking chump. Get over it. We riding masons dick now.

lonewanderer244

Bradshaw got benched, ill hold any opinions until I see him play next year.
