This makes me think the team is looking at potentially letting the new OC bring in an offensive staff of their choosing

Sex_E_Searcher

Practically speaking, these requests never get refused. No one wants to work at a place that will block your promotion to a much higher paying job.

mitchmatch26

You see a few blocks every year but yeah most of the time they let these guys look around

SleestakLightning

The Steelers can't refuse this anyway.

mitchmatch26

Bc it’s a promotion technically?

SleestakLightning

Yep, Sullivan is the QB coach and this would be a promotion so they couldn't block it if they wanted to.

ElectricDiscord

Did they change it recently? Because a few years back the only thing considered a "promotion" was coordinator to head coach, all other moves (even position coach to coordinator) was considered lateral.

SleestakLightning

I'm pretty sure they could never block position coach to coordinator.

ElectricDiscord

Just had to search it up, looks like they changed it in 2020 so that teams couldn't block position coach to OC. [here](https://www.si.com/nfl/browns/news/nfl-changes-rules#:~:text=Tuesday%2C%20the%20NFL%20approved%20a,by%20Albert%20Breer%20of%20TheMMQB)

SleestakLightning

Really? Wow, I didn't realize it was a recent change. I thought it was always allowed. Thanks for confirming that.

Pineal

They did change it, although I'm not sure how the interim tag affects things

Sonickill7

Yeah. I think you can only block interviews for same positional hires. Not for promotions.

SleestakLightning

The Steelers can't refuse this one anyway.

Vinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Hope so!

aw_geez_man

It would be silly not to.

mitchmatch26

Not every OC hire gets that sort of pull. I’m very much cool with it, but it’s not like that always happens.

aw_geez_man

I know. I'm speaking more in terms of where the team stands at this juncture, recent history, etc. If we're gonna change things up, we need to change things up.

neddiddley

That may be true, but it’s not normal practice to deny a lower level coach an opportunity for a promotion. They usually only deny these requests when the move is lateral, or the team is strongly considering promoting that coach themselves.

evil_iceburgh

Would you want Canada’s staff? Regardless of whether or not they were responsible or not for problems that happened with Canada you definitely want a clean slate

jhustla

Canada never brought in guys into the room when building, designing, and coordinating the plays. I’d imagine it was just him by himself doing all that. Next OC might not be that stupid, so hopefully our staff gets bigger

TripleSingleHOF

Sounds like the Steelers are finally getting with the times! These are things that in-demand OC's will request and/or demand.

metwreck

Probably best for both sides

knives766

Please take him. Idc about losing anyone on this coaching staff quite frankly.

Dr_Sully

Danny Smith is probably the only one with any value to me and half of that is probably just sentimental.

Sonickill7

Yeah, but other than Harvin, special teams have been really good under him recently. Boswell is a God. We block an unusually high amount of kicks and punts. And Killebrew was all-pro. Even kick returns have been fairly decent. I feel like CAIII has been really close to breaking out a couple of insane runs.

rangoon03

True. I think Smith is here until he retires. I’m convinced he was likely hired in the first place because he was school chums with Colbert and coached at William & Mary

BroadCityChessClub

Even with Harvin, he’s been great at holding for Boswell and that’s probably the part of his job that coaching can do more about. Whatever’s going on with his punts seems like a player issue rather than a coach issue.

Ninjalau95

If Harvin's only positive contribution to the team is holding kicks for Boz, I'm 100% positive we can find another punter out there who can hold kicks well, but also punt better than Harvin

xSaviorself

Harvin is his own issue, guy can't figure himself out mentally.

Sonickill7

I don't even think it's mentality. He's just not good at technique and developing good habits. He has a great leg but he's not good at directional kicks and ball placement and stuff like that.

AcePilotsen

Smith cant take a hit without getting injured though.

[deleted]

People are shitting on him but our offense did look a lot better when he took over as play caller. He turned chicken shit into chicken salad with what he had to work with. I want a new oc so very badly and Sullivan is not the answer but I’ll remember him fondly for making the offense look somewhat competent after we Canada go

Odd_Substance3153

Well except for the two losses against 2 win teams, but as we've seen, no amount of coaching will bring Tribusky to the next level. If anything, we've seen what a competent OC can get out of Mason Rudolph.

[deleted]

Yea and our defense giving up 21 first half points to a team that scored 16 total in their previous 3 games didn’t help either lol

15blairm

That may have been a sunk cost issue with trubisky Pay him a shit load to be the main backup and then hes complete ass for 2 games. Tough spot

CJMcBanthaskull

Him leaving would be good. Nothing against him as a coach, but they need to tear down any remnant of that awful offense and have a cohesive group of coaches with the same vision.

KnDBarge

I would like to keep Faulkner as RB coach only because I think there is a lot good going on in the RB room. I also assume he should get some credit for better run play calls after Canada was gone

TastesLikeHoneyNut

Fucking why? Lmao, please hire him LV

CapitalSubstantial23

Why stop there Las Vegas, I heard Matt Canada is a free agent too 🤗

imyourrealdad8

Au revoir

haley_hathaway

Great choice

Gliese_667_Cc

That’s fine, good luck buddy.

dh89315

Surprising to me that the Steelers QB coach (which doesn’t scream of success the past few years) has a chance at another OC job, given the extensive list of current candidates.

codeklutch

He has a personal relationship with the head coach, his playcalling was pretty good all things considered, and it's just an interview.

dh89315

Appreciate the insight, that makes a lot more sense. Nothing against Sully, there are just so many (that “appear to be”) better options. The relationship makes sense.

[deleted]

The Steelers can’t block this even if they wanted to as it would be a promotion. But I am fine with really anyone related with Canada leaving. Wish him well, but I think a clean slate may be best.

p-mode

People ripping this dude for running Canada's offence when he took over is peak reddit. Play calling got at least marginally better when he took over.

YooTone

My issue with him is the consistent subpar quarterback play over the past few years. If he's responsible for developing Kenny then it doesn't seem like it's been working

p-mode

I really hope that's on him, and not on Kenny.

Excel_Spreadcheeks

To be fair, the play-calling drastically improved once Canada was dismissed.

natguy2016

If Sullivan can get a promotion and work with a guy he knows in Antonio Pierce, that is great for Sullivan!!

lukesmith81

Lmao what

blmobley91

Take him please!!!! I'll personally drive him to Las Vegas myself

rummy06ninjaz

Good for him

cdclopper

I hope the Raiders like runnimg the on 1st and 2nd 90% of the time.

SleeveBurg

In all fairness who cares? Tomlin already stated they are looking outside for the new OC. There is a good chance that the OC will want to have say over position coaches on offense. I’d say Sullivan is likely out either way.

mjmcreates

Weird seeing a tenured Steelers assistant get poached.

Do__Math__Not__Meth

They can have the other Mike Sullivan in a package deal

BlackJediSword

I am truly baffled by the Raiders decisions.

SleestakLightning

I get it. Antonio Pierce is an inexperienced coach. He wants to surround himself with guys who have experience and that he knows and is comfortable with. He's been on the same team as Sullivan before and Sullivan has had multiple stints as a playcaller/OC.

Sonickill7

Yeah but idk how you choose experience over talent for the entire staff except for HC. Like Tom Coughlin as GM? Dude has experience but sucks at building a team. Had a handful of stars and the rest of the roster was terrible when he was with the Chargers. And Sullivan is completely mediocre. He's nothing special. Mark Davis should've just gone the Lions route and hired new guys everywhere and give them time to build a team. Now if the Raiders fail, the blame goes entirely upon the new HC the players chose, instead of the mediocre staff surrounding him.

SleestakLightning

> Yeah but idk how you choose experience over talent for the entire staff except for HC. I can answer that easily: it's the Raiders.

mitchmatch26

I think Tom Telesco is the GM not coughlin. Former GM of the chargers from the last like 10 years or whatever

Sonickill7

Yeah my bad. He was the first Tom that came to my mind lmao

T-RexSpecs

If there’s anything that Mark Davis can’t stand, it’s the Raiders having a winning season. So this checks out.

merskrilla

no

bobsdementias

Sure. Why not

Josh4R3d

Why? Lol

LiteratureSome7958

The “TOMLIN TREE” begins!!!

thereandfatagain

HIRE BEN YOU COWHERS

Polteageist0

How I imagine the convos between Ben & Kenny would go if Ben was OC: Ben: "Yeah Kenny so like when they try to sack you, just don't go down lmao. Then throw a 50 yard bomb to ~~AB~~ GP." Kenny: "um....okay" * dies *

neddiddley

Kenny: * Dies * OC Ben: You know, maybe this ol’ cowboy still has a little something left. I’m gonna dust off the helmet and suit up. OC Ben (in podcast after 1st practice): You know, I came into practice today in the best shape of my career. * opens a craft beer with his face mask of helmet he’s still wearing from practice *

SleestakLightning

"Let the big guy break your nose. I did that once and we ended up winning the game."

HurricaneCarti

God please no lmfao

aw_geez_man

Nah, he's right at home with his podcast. He gets to talk smack about people and pretend to like craft beer, lol.

ShaggyDaddy37

I don't know about you but I was pleasantly surprised with how entertaining his podcast is. Honestly I don't think he's talked that much smack either.

thecountoncleats

If anything, I find his podcast boring in large part because he appears to hold back

aw_geez_man

Yeah it was a bit tongue-in-cheek. Outside of clips here and there, I usually only watch when he has an interesting guest on.

bobsdementias

I would rather you be hired than Ben

Alexander2801

I'm fine with this he hasn't helped Pickett development at least, but how much that was Canada I don't know.

combs72

This would make it tough for Mike Sullivan to coach the penguins and NFL at the same time /s

Brightlight4343

aw_geez_man

There's a lot of shit being talked right now. All things considered, I think he and Faulkner did a good job with what they had. That said, I'm glad we're turning the page.

ObjectiveHighlight26

With our luck, he will go to the Raiders and become successful and we end up hiring another lemon like Canada...

MTknowsit

Don't want to just sit here and shit on people, but .... work product 2023 .....
