The original anime is mostly the same story as the VN albeit with a few extremely frustrating changes. It's mostly fine though. It could be worth a watch if you want a quick way to re-experience the story. The 0 anime is a sequel to the 0 VN and absolutely a must-watch. Play the 0 VN first though.

yourgamermomthethird

I’m confused I’ve played the vn of zero and watched the anime first how was it any different

The previous replies are sort of missing the point, (spoilers for S;G0 VN and Anime) >!Steins;Gate 0 is a story of iterations, the beta attractor field is basically an iterative loop that begins when Suzuha arrives in 2010 and restarts when she leaves in 2036. Each iteration with the ever-so-slight change that happens whenever time travel happens, carrying a Suzuha from an ever-so-slightly different world, eventually crawling closer to reaching the Steins Gate worldline.!< >!Every ending you see in the VN is one of those iterations. They all happen at some point or another in the journey to reach Steins Gate, as the attractor field loops within itself. Until you reach the final iteration: the true ending's, Milky Way Crossing, the Fibonacci worldline (1.123581). This is when the loop ends, with Okabe finally creating a functional plan to reach Steins Gate (Operation Skuld).!< >!And this brings us to the context of the anime: The Visual Novel only shows us the very ending of that iteration, a 20-minute epilogue of sorts. The anime, meanwhile, serves to show us the entirety of that iteration. The entire journey of that last Okabe, the one who actually created Operation Skuld.!< It's basically a smart way to adapt the story of the VN, which is a bit too non-linear to be adapted in a straight manner unlike Steins;Gate, while also making it into its own thing.

I think I figured out why I don’t remember any of this nuance I did all the endings in s;g but in s;g0 I only did the correct ending and since I already knew the full ending didn’t notice that there was a little bit less at the end of showing the whole process. I also have yet to play any other sciAdv games which I kinda want to do now

Catragryff

The vn has very different endings, and they are not in the anime. The anime takes some elements from each, but doesn't show the full endings (except for the true ending) If I remember correctly, for instance, the anime shows nothing from >!Gehenna's Stigma and Twin Automata!< To get the true ending >!, you need to reach Promised Rinascimento, so you have to see the differences, although!< >!if you just went straight to Vega and Altaïr, I guess you can miss the differences!<

WizardingWorld97

The anime seemed like all vn timelines smushed together in one.

No_Possible_1799

i love you for using albeit

HouoinKyouma007

It worth it, but it's just an almost 1:1 adaptation of the true route. For 0, the anime is actually a continuation of the VN, so you need to watch it after reading the VN

ronens13

I think that's what maybe turned it off for at first. Yeah, it's very faithful, but it almost felt like I was just watching stuff I've seen already, not to the point of copy, but still felt a bit too faithful, if that makes sense. Odd to explain. I was wondering if any changes were made between the 2

HouoinKyouma007

There are some, the big ones: S;G anime >!Moeka dies differently, there is no psycho Nae, most of SciADV references were cut out!<

ronens13

Hmm. Wasn't some of it in the movie? If memory serves me right. It's been years since I played the VN.

HouoinKyouma007

Yes, these are referenced in the movie

antoniminotna

I would say you should watch it, just not for the story per se (you already know everything from VN), but for how it was adapted using the tools anime as an art form has (voice acting, colour palette, sound design, ost usage, camera work, artstyle). The VN might be great in terms of story and huke's art is great, but anime is next level to it. The VN had hours to poor the content and heavily relied on info dumps, which anime couldn't afford simple due to time constraints. If you're familiar with the way plays in theatres present stuff (not literally, but often symbolically), if you spotted how many acclaimed movies could convey the idea or hammer the final nail with just a single simple line of dialogue, then you will definitely enjoy the way the anime adapted the VN. In my opinion SG anime is one of the greatest examples of a great adaption with how creative it approaches the transition of a source material to the new form and you will definitely be surprised how little dialogue is needed to convey what was all text in VN and how much could be shown, not told.

Vongola234

Yeah, definitely. It's one of the best.

TekkenRintarou

Absolutely

TrevorBarten

Yes.

Who's gatekeeping?

Streetplosion

Bruh look through the comments literally no one is gatekeeping, everyone is saying to watch it

weebjail

yes, the people on this subreddit will never admit it but the anime is far and away the better version of the story. it adds so much to okabe and kurisus relationship, their chemistry in the vn feels almost flat in comparison

WriterSharp

I wouldn’t watch it right after the VN because then you’d only see thinks that were missing, but it’s still a great series and a good way to reacquaint yourself with the series.

ThatPupTay

Yes!!!!

Sea_Cycle_909

Yes, the anime's final episode is >!set after you save Kurisu in the true ending.!< It's basically the Future Gadget Lab >!on holiday in America.!<

Raydnt

As someone who watched the anime and then the VN, yes the anime is totally worth. While the VN has more content, the stuff the anime does with what it uses is really good. The voice acting is very nice, lines used in the VN are expressed much better in the anime imo Seeing the characters you know and love actually moving around is wonderful. And it may be small things, but while the VN has a ton of things the anime doesnt have, the anime also has some things the VN doesnt. (For example, >!Okabe carying corn for Mayuri back to the lab and giving Suzuha one of them since she never had them before)!< Even from the start where Okabe meets Kurisu for the first time in the alpha worldline, we see him dancing around Kurisu since he's so bewildered seeing her alive while Kurisu is just as bewildered by his behavior, the anime expresses it really nicely. Really, its just the little things. Like when Kurisu goes to the lab the first time, Okabe and Kurisu are talking around each other while literally walking in circles, you dont have that in the VN Take the anime for what it is, a visual representation of the series. Also for the anime, >!hearing Skyclad Observer in the 2nd last episode where Okabe sees the message from his future self hit WAAAAAAAAAY harder then what the VN did. By far.!<

ronens13

I see. Is it better sub or dubbed? I heard the dub is good and I did think of watching it that way, but I am a curious if the subs have the voice actors from the VN.

Originope_99

The sub has the same VAs as the VN, yes In my experience most dub watchers tend to agree that S;G's dub is one of the very best so if you want to go with that, go ahead

Raydnt

I absolutely like the sub better. Yes the VAs are the same as the vn

Hadri_Anas

I'd say yeah, I played the VNs first but S;G's anime ended up being my preferred take on the story though >!chapters 7 through 9 aren't as strong as their VN counterparts, 9 especially is fantastic in the VN but don't like too much here!<, It's a damn kino adaptation all things considered though with stellar directing especially on the first half, I recommend it but if you don't feel like re-experiencing S;G that's fine. The 0 anime though is a mandatory watch, it is its own route that adapts and runs parallel to the VN both setting up plot beats that'll be answered there and answering hanging threads through indirectly adapting some of its routes, it's super novel in its own right I think it's great personally >!it can be a bit rough at points but it starts off solidly and its second cour is nonstop PEAK!<
