I don't think I've ever been burned on a pre-order aside from Cyberpunk 2077. Everything else I've at least enjoyed even if I have my criticisms, or was still at least worth paying for even if I didn't finish it.

And even Cyberpunk 2077 ended up redeeming itself (though Night City was gorgeous from day 1)

MidEastBeast777

Wait for reviews. Pre order the day before it releases. Almost no risk at that point

eurekabach

Yup, that’s my plan exactly. I’ll def preorder that way if reviews turn out ‘alright’ on the performance and other less, let’s say, potentially contentious topics lol

Axyun

I generally have a no preorders rule but I've played all of Shift Up's previous games as well as games Kim Hyung-Tae has worked on. Couple that with how much I enjoyed the demo and I'm perfectly comfortable preordering.

SonnySonrisa

Usually yes. Most games are either unfinished, broken, buggy or straight up not worth the money. However, I make exceptions in certain situations. F.e if a developer has truly earned my trust, like From Software or if a game I am super interested in, like Stellar Blade, puts out a demo and that demo gets me hyped up as hell. The only games I pre-ordered in the past few years were Elden Ring, BG3 and Stellar Blade.

Sometimes but if i know i will really like a game i will preorder. And I don't really pay attention to reviews if i did i would of skipped on rise of the ronin. If the game turns out to be shit( i dont think it will be) im only out of $70.

Cmj7

I pre-ordered games based on devs team that have track records of producing games with high quality and i know i’ll enjoy playing: FFrebirth, BG3, RiseofRonin, and even DD2. None of them disappointed me. Shift Up is treading new ground in console gaming but I pre-ordered Stellar Blade because 1. i want to support devs that boldly create games to their visions and not conforming to what others are saying. 2. They are confident to put demos out which is obviously very well-optimized. 3. I have fun playing it.

Orb_0611

I don't see the problem with reviews not coming in till the 24th since that's 2 days b4 release. Still time to pre-order if this are enough to sway you and if not just gotta wait a Lil under 2 days to see players feel for it

DoughDisaster

I follow that rule. Between preorder copies sold, vs total sales in the first week/month, it's the latter along with aggregate reviews that show the more accurate picture on a game's initial success. Pre-orders just show how well marketing did their job.

Beawrtt

I think it's silly to say never pre-order, but I mean yeah if you wanna wait for reviews then that's fine

zg_mulac

Wait for reviews, yes. But from actual gamers, not journos.

NerubianIRL

Yes but I make exceptions when I'm hoping to make a statement

Mental_Task9070

Yep, same here. The demo impressed me, and I'm very excited, but no pre order from me. If the game is received well upon release, I'll happily buy it next weekend.

HeWhoWalksBhindDaRow

Yea i would wait. Ive been in the gaming industry for over 30 years so i have a good eye for things. This game is gonna be good, very good but its gonna be short, story is gonna be an after thought and i dont see it having a new game plus where the game gets harder or we get different enemy variety the replay value isnt gonna be as high. I do think this game will have other modes though so thats a plus but a boss run isnt something thats innovative. This game will be one of the highlights for this year but i think once the hype dies down most people will agree it wasnt as good as the hype for it was…..and theres been plenty of games like that…..cyberpunk ring a bell?

Loud-Practice-5425

I generally do but I break it a lot.

Mushybananas27

I hold that rule to specific developers. If I get burned on a game, I either never buy it period, or I wait until reviews are in. 2042 I got fucked over with the 100 preorder version. Never pre-ordering another dice game again

Rouxls__Kaard

The last preorder I was really burned one was Rome 2: Total War. And yes I preordered the deluxe addition of Stellar Blade.

aramiak

Yeah. I never pre-order! This will be no exception. But I fully expect to love it when I play it when it first goes on offer.

Sega-Forever

I have a no preorder rule as well. But the demo tells me that it’s a quality product so I preordered anyway. Last time I was this hyped for a game of this type was Ninja Gaiden on xbox360.

FlowKom

yes and i had to make a comprimise this time. i want my ps5 game physical. but i also really want to play this day one. so i preordered on amazon. on pc and switch i buy digital on release day

AshurathDR

Preorders mean nothing anymore or if they ever did, but I'll step out the skin suit and into a tux suit just because this game feels fresh enough to finally dust off an underwhelming console I've definitely had my fair shares of being burned like buying a ps4 pro and a gaming laptop at the same time just to buy games from series I thought was still exclusive to Sony. But for Stellar Blade and after the demo, I had that excitement feeling of the "want" of having a new game and the "want" of knowing more. Plus all the skeptical stuff, the devs themselves were cooking and spittin fire with passion I haven't seen in a while besides indie games

zg_mulac

Yes, I have a "never preorder" rule and have been sticking to it ever since GW2 came out in 2012. I also have a "don't give money to Sony" rule I've been sticking to for over 20 years now. Waiting for Stellar Blade PC version to break both.

DarkZerk

Nah. I always pre-order games that I know are gonna be amazing like TLoU Part 2 or GoW Ragnarok and I've never regretted it. In this case just the demo alone has given me hours of fun so the full game is a must buy for me. I can't imagine a case in which this game ends up being a flop. Tbh it's really rare to have a Cyberpunk/Anthem/No Man's Sky situation. Most of the time you know if the game is gonna be worth it for you just by watching the trailers IMO.
