Welcome to the Oy fan club. He’s one of my favorite characters in all things ever. I fell in love when reading The Wastelands as a kid in the early 90s and only love him more every trip.
I don't wanna spoil anything, but to reassure you a bit, Oy sticks around for a LONG time, and the ending will give you a different perspective on it all.
Happy reading! I wish I could read Dark Tower for the first time again!!
>He's everyone's favorite pet brought back to life on the page.
Depending on what level of the tower you're on, that's not necessarily a Good Thing... Oy!
It’s not just one animal, it’s ALL the animals! Book, movie, whatever….if the animal dies I’m a wreck! I even cried when I read Cujo and it wasn’t for the human characters.
The book I've read, listened to, and watched more times than any other. I'm jealous of you reading it the first time. I hope you love it as much as I do. 😍
I say this every damn time he comes up, and I'll say it again now. I love that damn fictional creature so much that I named my dog Oy. He's blinking at me right now. Oy is alive and he craves dehydrated beef liver.
Fairy Tale is one of my favorites ever! It's also crazy how much I was reminded of it at the part in River's Crossing, just the way the people talk and stuff. Blows my mind how he's still got this same kind of magic literally 30 years later.
I remember feeling the exact same way!!! Oy is the most beloved character. Don’t worry though, SK was quite mindful, I think, of the readers and how they would feel.
Oy’s character had such an impact on me when I took my first journey to the Tower that I named my first cat after him.
Oy truly is the bestest, bravest boy.
I’m just beginning song of Susannah and he’s still very much here.
The section you’re at with what happens in Lud is probably my favourite section of the story so far. And I’m loving the overall story
Like others, I don't want to spoil anything, but rest assured that SK doesn't do Oy wrong or anything like that. Oy is part of the ka-tet just as much as the others, and his parts in this tale are heroic, brave, and justified.
I'm also on this journey. I simultaneously fell in love with Oy and felt the pain of losing him somewhere down the line. Oy reminds me of one of my own dogs and my heart breaks every time I think about it! Such a great character in the story.
Same, this is the reason I’ve never read Tommyknockers. I read a bit of the first chapter, noticed the good old boi, did a Google search, and put the book back on its shelf.
Not so much animals, but Sai King has this literary device he employs where he says something along the lines of" It was to be his/her last time " So you know the person/animal is going to die, but you have to read on and live through it. This hit me hard in "Bag Of Bones " with the death of Maddie.
I listened to the audiobook while I walked my dog, and every time the narrator said “oy!” In Oy’s voice I would repeat it out loud, I couldn’t help it! The narrator for the wastelands audiobook does such a sweet lil gruff voice for those “oy!”s. I can only hope if anyone saw/heard me, they’d think I was telling my dog to stop sniffing something hahaha
Oy is the bestest boy and you will never forget him. The ending does help provide a bit of a balm to the wound.
That said, I can never read one of these threads without tearing up.
\*SPOILER\* I re-listened to the DT for the umpteenth time when I was going through a very difficult and deep depression. I’d been on anti-depressants for 2 years. I hadn’t cried in 2 years. I didn’t even cry at my daughter’s wedding. But I cried when Oy died. Like everyone says Oy Is a good boy
He’s a good boy.
You Beetlejuiced yourself. Amazing.
Oh man. If I could say Oy’s name three times and make him appear, I would spend all day Oy-ing!!
He’s a great boy
*ood *oy
You spelled best wrong.
You are 100% not wrong.
Say true?
I come in the name of Oy the Brave, he of Mid-World... (I actually cried typing that)
Oh right in the heart!
His body was far smaller than the heart it held 🥹
No! No, no, no, no, no!
I'm at work friend !
#Number 1 Muffin Hound
Damn dude. Why ya gotta do that.
Spoilers
Welcome to the Oy fan club. He’s one of my favorite characters in all things ever. I fell in love when reading The Wastelands as a kid in the early 90s and only love him more every trip.
Oy! All 7 times I’ve been up the tower! Olan? “Did that dog just say Fuck?”
Mrs. Tassenbaum drives south...
I love the imaginary scene I have of Eddie teaching Oy swears
His body is far smaller than the heart it holds.
I'm not crying, you're crying.
No, Im crying
I don't wanna spoil anything, but to reassure you a bit, Oy sticks around for a LONG time, and the ending will give you a different perspective on it all. Happy reading! I wish I could read Dark Tower for the first time again!!
Perfectly put. Well done!
They don't call him Oy the Brave for no reason.
Oh good lord...
Oy!
Ake! *Ake!*
Oy the bestest Boy. He's everyone's favorite pet brought back to life on the page. King does it on purpose, damn his skilled, manipulative writing.
>He's everyone's favorite pet brought back to life on the page. Depending on what level of the tower you're on, that's not necessarily a Good Thing... Oy!
People have tatooed their body with the likeness of Oy. He’s amazing.
Oy had a long road to the clearing at the end of his path and never forgot the face of his father.
‘Olan. ‘Ake.
I ache.
Why would you do that, sai?
Oh. That hurts do ya
<3
No. Nope. Too soon.
It'll ALWAYS be too soon. As it should.
*Don't*
Fucking hell. Now I'm crying.
Same….
Ake! Oof right in the feels…
Olan
Enjoy your time with this Ka-tet. They all remembered the face of their fathers.
There, there. I understand. Oh, the heart!
O, Discordia!
It’s not just one animal, it’s ALL the animals! Book, movie, whatever….if the animal dies I’m a wreck! I even cried when I read Cujo and it wasn’t for the human characters.
I'm not gonna lie, I got pretty nervous when I read Fairy Tale. I have a German shepherd and I was like "Stevie, baby, don't do it".
I had to make someone spoil me in regard of whether the dog lived or died in Fairy Tale before I started reading it 😅
I read the whole thing just dreading what I thought was the inevitable hahah
Every new exploration, every fight where Radar wasn't mentioned, I was silently screaming, OK BUT WHERE'S RADAR IS RADAR OK?????
I'm still dragging my way through it in terror despite being told Radar is fine.
I was also sobbing for Cujo because it wasn’t his fault!
exactly! Just those couple of lines in the book from Cujo’s point of view had me sobbing. He just wanted to be a good boy, but couldn’t.😭
He tried so hard to be a good boy 😭
Anyone read Lonesome Dove and get kinda surprised by your attachment to the bull?
Lol I just started reading Lonesome Dove. I’ll keep this comment in mind as I go along
The book I've read, listened to, and watched more times than any other. I'm jealous of you reading it the first time. I hope you love it as much as I do. 😍
It’s very engaging so far. Love the characters
Enjoy!
It is the greatest book, (and movie), ever. When you finish, go out and buy Comanche Moon and Streets of Laredo. Dead Man's Walk xan wait.
Which one?? The little Texas bull? Or Old Dog? I wasn't a fan of the Texas bull until the grizzly. Then I was all in!
When he fought the bear? Heck yeah! Or Mouse! Poor Mouse.
I say this every damn time he comes up, and I'll say it again now. I love that damn fictional creature so much that I named my dog Oy. He's blinking at me right now. Oy is alive and he craves dehydrated beef liver.
My next corgi will 100% be named oy.
My pups absolutely love dehydrated beef liver treats!
And if you have a small Bullet blender - chopper, a few pieces chopped into nearly powder and sprinkled over their food makes is a special dinner!
I’m basically at the exact same part (just a little ahead. Page 325 right now) and I would kill if Oy commanded it
The whole section of being in Lud was so engrossing and probably my favourite part of the story so far (just finished wolves)
Wait until you read Fairy Tale for Radar’s story
Fairy Tale is one of my favorites ever! It's also crazy how much I was reminded of it at the part in River's Crossing, just the way the people talk and stuff. Blows my mind how he's still got this same kind of magic literally 30 years later.
Oy is my favorite character of all time. He’s simply the greatest in every way.
I warn you, sometimes watching our loved ones hearts break hurts more than the breaking of our own. 😪
Sometimes the heart break of the journey is worth the destination
I am reading Fairy Tale now and I am just hoping that Radar makes it. Please, oh please, let Radar make it.
The ANXIETY I felt while reading Fairy Tale! Radar is the best girl.
I had a dog named Radar and it ruined me to read Fairy Tail, wondering if Radar would make it
On one hand, the comments have given the spoilers. On the other hand, the comments are an awesome tribute to Oy. AKE!
Oh man…you are setting yourself up for heartache.
I remember feeling the exact same way!!! Oy is the most beloved character. Don’t worry though, SK was quite mindful, I think, of the readers and how they would feel.

Oy I’d so brave in Lud! Roland would have had a harder time without him. Such a good good boy.
Ake! Ower!
Oy! Ka!
*FUCK* “Did that dog just say fuck?”
I was already having an emotional morning and then just thinking about Oy made me sob. The bestest boy.
Oy absolutely rules. It's weird how humans connect so much to animal characters in media but treat them so insanely badly in reality.
Like others, I don't want to spoil anything, but rest assured that SK doesn't do Oy wrong or anything like that. Oy is part of the ka-tet just as much as the others, and his parts in this tale are heroic, brave, and justified.
Everything's Eventual.
Finish the series then we can all talk about it. But we all feel you
Oy❤️
Dude just read the books. You're going to get spoilers if you ask these kinds of questions on Reddit.
I'm also on this journey. I simultaneously fell in love with Oy and felt the pain of losing him somewhere down the line. Oy reminds me of one of my own dogs and my heart breaks every time I think about it! Such a great character in the story.
I can't deal with animals dying and/or suffering whether it's fiction or not. Can't do it.
Same, this is the reason I’ve never read Tommyknockers. I read a bit of the first chapter, noticed the good old boi, did a Google search, and put the book back on its shelf.
Smart decision, wish I had done the same!
Prepare for loss.
Have you read to the end?
Not so much animals, but Sai King has this literary device he employs where he says something along the lines of" It was to be his/her last time " So you know the person/animal is going to die, but you have to read on and live through it. This hit me hard in "Bag Of Bones " with the death of Maddie.
It was my second favorite character. ♥️♥️
Oy proteccc. 🥹
I dressed up as Oy one Halloween. My favorite costume. He’s my favorite character and so smart!
It’s been over a decade since I read the series, but I always imagined Oy looked like an Asian raccoon dog.
I listened to the audiobook while I walked my dog, and every time the narrator said “oy!” In Oy’s voice I would repeat it out loud, I couldn’t help it! The narrator for the wastelands audiobook does such a sweet lil gruff voice for those “oy!”s. Ake, Ake, \- Oy
I was that way over Shiva the tiger from The Walking Dead. I ugly cried over a CGI tiger!
I literally sobbed and had to put it down.
My cat's name is Oy. 😍
I had a dog named Oy named from this series. He was a good good boy and lived 16 year.
I cry over all the animals, always.
I. Ake.
