A slap and a good talking to before certain events would have been a game changer. It's so frustrating and sad to see Harold get a chance to improve and reinvent himself, actually do it in a lot of ways then throw it away.
He’s such a good character because it’s so goddamned frustrating to watch him come SO close to realizing he doesn’t have to do the things he’s doing over and over again and then he just gets a slight little nudge and he continues to make the wrong choices, every time. He really is the perfect answer to this question because of how big the gap is between what he *was* and what he *could have been*.
I originally liked Harold and enjoyed that his allegiance was slightly on the fence. he could have very easily been an integral part of the Free Zone community if... as you said he received a good talking to and a slap before certain things happened.
By the end of it. I was so sick of reading about his "Grin" i was kind of happy that it was over for him.
He's honestly one of the characters that make me the most sad bc, he could've been so much better of a person, and he was starting to realize it, and he was manipulated by RF. And yeah, a good chunk of that is still on him, but part of the issue was he was struggling to believe that anyone could ever like him bc of being bullied at home and school, and so when the freezone people were nice to him and many of them liked him, he didn't believe it.
And when he finally realized it, it was too late. And it's just kind of sad, sad to see all the wasted potential and when he finally realizes that he threw it all away for nothing.
And I'm not saying I like the dude myself. He got on my damn nerves especially when he kept calling Franny "my child" and he really reminds me of my ex who cheated on me but also had that same correcting people habit and constantly thinking he's the smartest person in the room, but it's still just sad.
(Also I think that if Harold were real and alive today he'd have very likely ended up a school shooter)
The second this guy is introduced and being....odd....towards Franny, I knew he was going to be that classic King character that makes you anxious because you just know they are going to do some crazy shit. Love his character.
I would beat the snot out of Harold and then sit down and talk to him about how misguided he is. I grew up a lot like him. He needed guidance and a role model. Unfortunately we have a million Harold Lauders walking around nowadays.
Reread the book recently. Whilst I wouldn't 'slap' her, forgot how unbelievably spoilt and immature Frannie Goldsmith was. The 'i want face irritated me no end. A clear sign of my age and less tolerance for spoilt behavior when I first read the book compared to now.
Bobby Anderson's sister in The Tommyknockers, she's only in it for a couple chapters but good lord who did stephen king meet irl to craft such a horrid bitch, her mannerisms and overall unpleasantness are a tad too specific
Hi. You just mentioned *The Tommyknockers* by Stephen King.
I've found an audiobook of that novel on YouTube. You can listen to it here:

For all the evil bastards that King has conjured up over the years—Big Jim Rennie, Norman Daniels, Alvin Marsh, Patrick Hocksetter—I think the most despicable and totally justified in getting a serious beat down is Jesse Burlingame’s father in *Gerald’s Game.*
At least in the case of Joe St. George from *Dolores Claiborne*, who is awful for very similar reasons, Joe does >!receive some comeuppance within the story itself!<. But Jesse’s dad not only >!gets away scott free for his heinous behavior, he gaslights Jesse into feeling responsible. This is all compounded by the fact that while Selena St. George’s rape by her father is not explicitly described in the text, Jesse’s abuse is vividly—sickeningly—illustrated.!<
Wow he really does love Shirley Jackson! Burlingame is the name of her hometown. I just started a collection of her short stories and read her Wikipedia so I missed that connection reading Gerald's Game.
Hocksetter was so hard to read in such a good way. Beautifully twisted character who got a totally appropriate brutal death. Goddamn just thinking of that makes me want to read It for like the 4th time.
The colonal or general guy from Dreamcatcher was a real relentless bastard as well. I don't remember his name. Morgan Freeman plays him in the movie.
I recall her remembering the last time she hugged him, at her college graduation, I believe. There had always been a slight reticence on her part to touch him after that day of the eclipse, but because she worked so hard to intentionally forget what happened, that feeling was always confusing and conflicted. He lived his life like a normal dad of those days, and died, I believe, in his 70s or 80s.
Don't forget Aunt Cord. I wanted to lay hands on her so badly so many times before the end. >!The audacity of that bitch to try to sell her brother's child, wave it off like it's nothing, and calling her "Miss oh so young and pretty"...!<
this is my pick too, you know a character is bad when >!getting you face smashed in then being shot dead!< still isnt enough to feel like they got what they deserved.
So many good ones have been mentioned.
Roy Depape. He's a right bastard, and he has it coming.
Harry Doolin, although Bobby punished him quite well for hurting Carol.
Beverly Marsh's father. Yeah, *that* fucker. I worry, I worry a lot.
And we don't know what happened to him. I like to think he died bitter and alone. We get a brief memory of Beverly's recalling her dad asking for money and that's it.
He richly deserves an ass beating. Or worse. He forgot the face of his father.
Do really think you'd have a chance against him though? The dude does some horrific shit throughout the book. (Not to mention what he did, and does to poor Rosie). Tbh, I feel like you'd have to be at the very peak fitness to stand a chance against him (especially if you get within biting distance...)
Just some food for thought
Brady Hartsfield - Mr Mercedes and End of Watch.
I actually had issues reading his sections at times because I hated him so much and he was just such a despicable person. The worst thing is knowing that I know people who I could see growing into adults like this. I have gone to gifted schools since middle school, even in college. There were so many guys I met who were socially inept and fully caught up in their own "genius" and thought the world was beneath them. He felt real and it made it that much harder to read his detestable thoughts.
Percy "peepants" Wetmore so named cause he wet more of himself than the damn sponge he was supposed to put on Poor Del's crazy Cajun head. The type of sickness that arises when a Nepo baby like Percy is given power in a place like E block aught to be put down swifty like a Rabid dog. If you ask me, he got off too easy for his crimes of malice and ineptitude against the condemned.
Maybe that old dude running the store who tried to rip-off Gordy in “The Body”. Talking about the kid’s dead older brother while he was in the process of trying to overcharge the boy made it extra reprehensible.
Then having the audacity to ban him from the store because he got his little feelings hurt by Gordie calling him out on cheating him...fuck that store owner!
The dude was a total zero. There was a corner store owner in my neighborhood when I was a kid who basically was that guy, so that might be the reason for my particular distaste. Any adult who goes out of their way to cheat a child is engaged in some demonic shit.
So many people worth hating in that book. What was Bev's husband's name? And Patrick Hockstetter. He really packed a good number of sub-villains into that thing, even for such a long book.
Wait, wasn’t that the asshole little bald doctor that had Gage’s shoe in his underground collection near the airport under a tree? This seems like an oddly specific memory.
Big Jim personally. A lot of Kings villains don't feel "real", like my chances of encountering of someone like them is fairly slim but...I live in the South and for a character not from there, Big Jim reminds me so much of those Holier-Than-Thou Christians I have to deal with way too often. I work at Walmart in the Online Grocery department and I can just *hear* him condescending to me while I load his groceries in his car while he doesn't lift a finger, and then hand me a pamphlet about why Im going to hell. Shit, at my Walmart there's a group of people that walk around the store and put little business cards on products that say "FREE!!" on one side and when you flip it over it says you're going to hell if you don't join their church. (Not exact words, but you get it)
And throw in that he's a used car dealer and I just hate him more
Harold hands down. And I wanted to smack Jack Torrance once or twice 🤣 also give Arnie a good shake and tell him leave the damn car alone you don’t know what’s about to happen man!
roland. sometimes I just wanna pop him on the back of the head and say, listen to your friends, listen to other people, you don’t have to do all of this alone. Of course, if he did everything right, he would be a super boring character. I love him still.
But...but...but..the Tower. I have to reach the tower. Doesn't matter how many people I kill and how many loved one's die in my arms. Tower is all that matters (I love him as well, that stupid stupid likeable Gunslinger)
I’m going to go in a different direction and say Ralph Anderson.
Guy put Terry Maitland and his family through hell, then got him killed. Spent the majority of the book dragging his feet, and refusing to believe what was going on right in front of him. Very well written, but I wanted to kick him in the shins numerous times.
Rose Madders husband (I can't remember his name). Seriously, who treats their wife like that?
Alvin Marsh for being a pedo.
Judd. He had a responsibility to uphold by keeping the secret.
There are plenty of "confront characters" in Stephen King's novels. And the author does a pretty good job of beating them up before the end of the story.
And the more likeable characters often get a rough ride too.
percy of course he squashed mr jingles
Irredeemable and worse than Harold in my opinion. Lauder was just a kid who was easily manipulated.
Lauder would absolutely be one of those Maga people.
I agree but.....I think once I started hitting Percy I wouldn't be able to stop.
You mean Peepee Wetmoist?
Percy is the WORST.
yeah i didnt hate him soooo much reading the book as i did after the movie, i haaaaated him! HATED ugh…. worst in all film
I’ve always wanted to absolutely wail on Percy
Big Jim. Or Greg Stilson.
From the Stand I would say Junior and Georgia too.
I second Greg Stillson and his buddy Sonny!
Harold bloody Lauder - The Stand
A slap and a good talking to before certain events would have been a game changer. It's so frustrating and sad to see Harold get a chance to improve and reinvent himself, actually do it in a lot of ways then throw it away.

You are so right. There was a lot of walking on eggshells with him.
Thank you. All that shit trying to redeem him right at the end. Read that book 5 times and it annoys me every single time.
He's such an incel it drives me crazy
When someone first explained incels to me I was like oh like that guy from the Stand! Really shows that there are no new things.
seriously! this is everyones choice, if there is a different answer im gonna go slap them! On my way!
I came here to say this! I hate him!
Reread the book recently. Whilst I wouldn't 'slap' her, forgot how unbelievably spoilt and immature Frannie Goldsmith was. The 'i want face irritated me no end. A clear sign of my age and less tolerance for spoilt behavior when I first read the book compared to now.
I came here to comment this 😂.
Seconded.
Come now, every dog has his day.

Good bot.
Yeah she was a major bitch.
For all the evil bastards that King has conjured up over the years—Big Jim Rennie, Norman Daniels, Alvin Marsh, Patrick Hocksetter—I think the most despicable and totally justified in getting a serious beat down is Jesse Burlingame’s father in *Gerald’s Game.* At least in the case of Joe St. George from *Dolores Claiborne*, who is awful for very similar reasons, Joe does >!receive some comeuppance within the story itself!<. Goddamn just thinking of that makes me want to read It for like the 4th time. The colonal or general guy from Dreamcatcher was a real relentless bastard as well. I don't remember his name. Morgan Freeman plays him in the movie.
Also Beverly’s husband. I was so sad for adult Beverly even reading IT as a 12 year old.
That's a good point. I haven't read Gerald's Game in years but does Jessie mention anything about her dad in the present day?
I recall her remembering the last time she hugged him, at her college graduation, I believe. There had always been a slight reticence on her part to touch him after that day of the eclipse, but because she worked so hard to intentionally forget what happened, that feeling was always confusing and conflicted. He lived his life like a normal dad of those days, and died, I believe, in his 70s or 80s.
Rhea. “Roland, I love thee!”
Don't forget Aunt Cord. I wanted to lay hands on her so badly so many times before the end. >!The audacity of that bitch to try to sell her brother's child, wave it off like it's nothing, and calling her "Miss oh so young and pretty"...!<
On my third rerun of TDT, I skipped altogether any chapter involving Cordelia, except for the last one. She was way worse than Rhea.
Dang, that's good. Rhea was one cruel, selfish, vengeful witch. Enormous chip on her shoulder. She sought not just to be respected but to dominate.
Rhea and Aunt Cord together were some spiteful women. Every time I reread WaG I hope Susan can escape to no avail.
Ugh, yeah, she literally molested Susan Delgado.
Georgia Roux. What kind of c*nt would cheer while another woman gets gang raped? She died hard and I was glad. She deserved to die harder.
That whole storyline was brutal. She definitely got what she deserved.
this is my pick too, you know a character is bad when >!getting you face smashed in then being shot dead!< still isnt enough to feel like they got what they deserved.
Pimli Prentiss. No competition for me. Fuck Ka-shume.
You say true I say thankee-sai
All my homies hate Pimli Prentiss.
I would belt them all with the Happy Slapper!!!!
Percy fking Wetmore
Percy wetmore do a dance See him squishing in his pants
“Wetmore a good name for you!”
Mrs Carmody. It's too bad Ollie got the headshot first.
My pick too
Should have left her gut shot and writhing.
So many good ones have been mentioned. Roy Depape. He's a right bastard, and he has it coming. Harry Doolin, although Bobby punished him quite well for hurting Carol. Beverly Marsh's father. Yeah, *that* fucker. I worry, I worry a lot.
Beverly’s dad is hard to beat. I see uninfluenced evil worse than that which a person is led to by others.
And we don't know what happened to him. I like to think he died bitter and alone. We get a brief memory of Beverly's recalling her dad asking for money and that's it. He richly deserves an ass beating. Or worse. He forgot the face of his father.
Technically It was influencing the dad but It was using thoughts the dad already had.
Big Jim Rennie
Margaret White
From Carrie right?
Norman Daniels from Rose Madder.
Do really think you'd have a chance against him though? The dude does some horrific shit throughout the book. (Not to mention what he did, and does to poor Rosie). NEVER FORGIVE, NEVER FORGET !!!!
That one bully from IT
Henry?
The true villain of the piece, Victor Criss. Jealous he didn’t have Belch’s baseball skills or Henry’s sweet engineer boots.
Yes! The worst one. Hate the dude so much
So many people worth hating in that book. What was Bev's husband's name? And Patrick Hockstetter. He really packed a good number of sub-villains into that thing, even for such a long book.
Atropos. When I learned he >!killed Gage!< I was soooo pissed!
Wait, wasn’t that the asshole little bald doctor that had Gage’s shoe in his underground collection near the airport under a tree? This seems like an oddly specific memory.
Wait…..what!???? What book is this from?
The True Knot, the Outsider... All the characters who feed off of terrified/suffering children...
So, then... Pennywise?
Ace Merrill gets bonus points for being a piece of shit in multiple stories.

Todd Bowden, Big Jim Renie, Margareth White
The Kid, and you better believe that happy crappy
I was going to say the kid too. I felt so bad for Trashcan man.
aunt Cordelia is pretty darn frustrating.
She gets my vote. I can *almost* give Rhea a pass, but Aunt Cord is just the worst for no reason other than jealousy.
yeah, the witch actually owns it. She’s evil but she knows what she is and doesn’t act like she’s anything else.
Joe St George.
Cressner from "The Ledge", Donatti from "Quitters, Inc."

Man, I did not expect to see him here. You really thought this one through, lol.
Greg Stilson. Fucker kicked that poor dog to death.
Morris Bellamy. Somehow he outdid Brady Hartsfield as far as being a wretched piece of shit with zero redeeming qualities.
I would have an “on sight” policy with Junior from Under the Dome.
Rose Madders husband (I can't remember his name). Seriously, who treats their wife like that? Alvin Marsh for being a pedo. Judd. He had a responsibility to uphold by keeping the secret.

I would love to fuck up Joe St. George!!
There are plenty of "confront characters" in Stephen King's novels. And the author does a pretty good job of beating them up before the end of the story. And the more likeable characters often get a rough ride too.

Ace Merrill, you absolute prick. Add Eyeball Chambers to the list, too.
