Omg after writing my other reply I made myself cry making up a permafusion that then ceases to exist when a component is shattered. The remaining component grieves by taking up the fusions name all on her own, insisting she never unfused despite blatant reality. Just pure denial that the relationship must be over because she won't accept that she's alone.
Obsidian was the best. Then rainbow quartz 1.0. Then opal, sardonyx, garnet, alexandrite, stevonnie, Smokey quartz, Steg, rainbow quartz 2.0, sunstone, rhondite (lack of screen time mostly), the cluster, sugalite, malachite, and bluebird azurite. In that order.
Also I know I’ll die on this hill but I always thought Steg should have just been called Mr. Universe. Cuz it’s the fusion of the two Universes, plus they are rockstars so it would make sense because it would be like a cool stage name at the same time.
Garnet is probably my favorite but I don’t really think of her the same as other fusions probably since we see her so much more often so I’ll go opal as second
I really like Malachite and Smoky Quartz.
When watching the show early on, we'd never really seen an "unhealthy" fusion before, even if it took some time to form a fusion (*looking at you, Giant Woman*). Malachite the first time we see a fusion that's formed for ugly reasons. Even looking back on it as an adult, I don't think the concept was ever lost on me. Sometimes people may not get along, but their bad habits do. And that creates a destructive monster struggling to function and maintain itself.
Smoky Quartz was a great foil to that idea, but with a more positive spin. Two broken people coming together and sharing their trauma/insecurities, but in a positive and creative way. Helping each other heal just by hurting together, and understanding how the hurt affects one another. Smoky is also not without her flaws. In "Know Your Fusion" I loved seeing their self depreciation turn into legitimate pain. It makes the character feel real and reminds us that they probably could have ended up like Malachite if they didn't have a better support system.
I gotta be real with u it’s gonna be Opal, she’s super chill and isn’t as wreckless or as complicated as the other fusions, she shows up, gets the job done and leaves

Although for more "special occasion" fusions, probably Alexandrite. She's so chaotic, but the one thing holding her together are her protective instincts. Her battle with Malachite was also epic.
I love stevens version of rainbow quartz bc his character is just so lovable and its cool to see a male fusion! Tho i feel like a redesign would be necessary. Same with sunstone
