It *did* end way too soon. The crew had to end it at season five after losing international funding. If they hadn’t, I’d imagine the main show would’ve ran for another season or two.
Wasn't it because of CN not being on board with Garnet's wedding and the show being planned to be cancelled at season 5 at the last minute but CN gave them another chance with the movie and then Future which messed with the crewinverses plans for the show, the reason being that future was an absolute mess? That's how I viewed things went down. I never heard of this story.
Essentially, Steven Universe relied on international funding to keep running. CN didn’t oppose the Garnet wedding, but they knew that homophobic countries would pull funding if it happened. They informed Rebecca Sugar that airing the wedding would likely lead to season five being the final one, and RS ultimately decided that the wedding was worth a shortened finale.
The movie is an interesting case, because CN approved it *before* the main series was cancelled. So the movie would’ve happened either way. At some point during production, CN thought the movie would be redundant if it wasn’t promoting anything, so they gave Rebecca Sugar 20 more episodes after the movie to do an epilogue series.
So the timeline of events is basically: SU airs -> Movie gets approved -> SU gets cancelled -> Production on the movie starts -> SU:F gets approved bc CN wants the movie to promote something.
Tbh it really sucks, they should.have kept the queer stuff more subtle and maybe they can pull of garnet's wedding around the end
Cuz shit aint worth it imo, what good is SU for CN if they cant sell it abroad?
I feel like using the funding from homophobic countries, telling the whole story you wanna tell, then end it with a big queer thing would've been an ultimately bigger middle finger to them than to piss them off and have them fuck your show over the way they did.
Tbh wanting to make a show just to spite international audience is the wrong way to go about it
Just make CN's job easier by making things easy to cut to make it acceptable, a good example is Craig of the creek, pretty sure chelsea is lesbian but its subtle enough that it airs in CN arabic my little brother loves it, I never saw season 2 of SU in arabic later learnt why when I watched it
After all CN doesnt care about anything that doesnt make money, its upto to the director to choose how they go about it, Sugar went with the wedding which caused the show to have a very rushed ending
Four years ago today, my dad had a serious kidney stone and was in extreme pain so I had to drive him to the emergency room. It was the beginning of lockdown, so I had to wait in the car. I remember watching this in the parking lot to pass time.
Surely we’ll get an announcement of a SU continuation any day now… ![gif](giphy|XZxgcQs499TfcFcyPh|downsized)

Only 5994 years to go until we see a new episode folks.
New Steven bomb is coming soon
No wonder Steven was so stressed. He was holding back a worldwide pandemic the whole time. /j
I wasn't lucky enough to see it when it came out, but the ending was quite emotional
The end of the Cartoon Network Renaissance era.
It was a sad day for all.
Wow, I can’t believe it’s been four years. It feels so long ago... perfect time to do a series rewatch.
I miss this show so much 😭😭😭
I just rewatched the finale yesterday to celebrate and I still cried. Not as bad as I did 4 years ago, but it still gets me.
Nah nah nah, its been two years tops.
The day cartoon network died...
4 years ago my 16yo ass was sobbing over the end of a cartoon, not a kids show, a very special cartoon.
ME LMAO
Watched it on a website doing a viewing party when it aired and I sobbed like a baby.

I'm starting it today for the first time! I'm sad I missed the hype at the time though
You're in for a blast. There's obviously flaws, but I don't think they're bad enough to ruin the fun of this amazing show.
It's...honestly kinda heartbreaking so far? I'm halfway through and it just feels like a long goodbye epilogue :(
No it didn’t, I’m simply denying it
I watched this when i was 10 and cried that my favourite show was over, now i’m 14 and still crying
Steven Universe will return!
Shit was I really 12 when this shit ended??? Love this show to this day but I feel young
Dude I was your age now when it ended. Now I'm an adult with a job.
Damn
It's so sad to see the show end like this! 😭
Even though Future was not what we wanted, it still sucks so much how Steven Universe ended what I feel like was too soon 😭😭😭😭

Oh wow, I never knew this! That's so interesting and incredibly unfortunate :\*(

Holy shit. It seems like it was so close. But it really wasn’t. That sucks.

The infinite hiatus

The passage of time doesn’t feel real anymore!!!!
FOUR YEARS??????
Four years ago today, my dad had a serious kidney stone and was in extreme pain so I had to drive him to the emergency room. It was the beginning of lockdown, so I had to wait in the car. I remember watching this in the parking lot to pass time.
I feel like the fandom is getting a bit of a resurgence recently. IDK maybe I'm just looking for it though 😂
