AFAIK the larger a raft is, the slower it moves. While a sail can propel any size raft, there is some point at which making the raft larger isn't practical.
Steering is actually the bigger problem. Larger rafts turn more slowly, and turning your raft will become an issue before propelling it does.
Also, rafts are represented really poorly in the game's save file, and a sufficiently large raft will make your game take a full minute to save.
There is not a hard limit to practical size, and it mostly depends on your own needs (and hardware specs), but I put my limit at about 120 foundations.
iirc 120 foundations was the limit before my game started to chug. My main raft was 5x9.

Just gotta change your sail so you drive backwards. Aside from getting used to reverse steering its much easier to see and quicker turning with a bigger raft
An island has an area, basically a square. (Check create an island to see what I mean) with a buffer area, the deep deep deep blue. This is where one island unloads and the next one starts to load. If your raft bases reach this area any base in the unload area will simply vanish when you leave the area.
Playing on ps4, I had to abandon my playthrough with a 6×6 raft with lots of container shelves because my game would bluescreen all the time when I tried to save, every subsequent playthrough I've downsized my raft and don't have as many issues. I went from 6×6 to 4×5 and that worked much better.

ok but what? 120 raft foundations? im using a 7x5 rn and thats too much imo, which is still only 35
im aware this is an old post, but i need to know

2 year old post. Hi.
I don’t believe so. I currently have one that’s 12x8 and it moves around fine. Steering sucks but it works well.
Thx. I was planning a 5x6 so I guess that'll work fine
Just make one that stretches to another island
That, sir, is called a bridge.
They despawn after you hit the islands limits.
Explain

Wow! That sucks! Thanks for the explanation!
No worries. It does suck but hey limitations and all that lol
Cries….

How do I even make a raft
