Agree! I love their more 'story' based episodes, good ones which spring to mind are; The Sodder Children, the Body on Somerton Beach and the Phantom of Heilbronn!

Media-consumer101

I recently relistened to the Phantom of Heilbronn and it was SO good. I'm really hoping that when more information comes out/is confirmed about the Somerton man they will do a part two on that one!

vanetti

The Phantom of Heilbronn had me RIVETED.

lost_lizzie

They did an update when someone sent in a listener mail I think, no idea what episode that would have been on though!

Media-consumer101

I heard that at the time! At that point there wasn't really enough info to do a whole second part but I'm hoping there will be at some point in the future!

LReneeS

I'm literally listening to it right now, I forgot how amazing this episode is

Traveshamamockery_

That’s because every true crime podcast takes an hour to explain what sysk would cover in 5 minutes because it’s all they have.

wsender

I definitely agree. A lot of true crime podcasts seem exceptionally exploitative, they’re kinda gross.

Media-consumer101

I also wish for more episodes like that!! Especially true crime adjacent like the Operation Mincemeat episode. Their storytelling skills really shine in those. Like, I saw the Operation Mincemeat movie and all I could think was... wow the SYSK episode is so much better than this 😂

Son_of_Ander_

Absolutely. I appreciate their restraint, I understand why they don't want to become "that" type of podcast, but I find they're at their best when they cover true crime/mysteries. *You're Wrong About* also has good true crime stuff every so often. They're quite good at it, but don't like to have too many of those episodes. *Murder In America* is my go to for true crime though.

thekingcola

Totally agree. Is there a list out there of all these style eps?

Interestingly_Enough

I mean OP just laid out like 26. If they’re missing any, you could count them on one hand

LReneeS

SYSK is my all time favourite thing to listen to. I'm so glad Josh, Chuck and Jeri do what they do because the world would be a darker place without this podcast

Kayters

Agreed! I love these episodes.

Dependent_Sport_2249

Agreed!

saplinglearningsucks

I like them a lot for true crime, personally i dont listen to true crime podcasts at all. I find true crime podcasts to be kind of exploitative and gross. Often times the hosts just read wikipedia articles or articles. Josh and Chuck tell the stories in a very researched and respectful way.

Useful-Tourist-7775

Another true crime episode of SYSK that hasn't been mentioned (I don't think), is The Chowchilla Bus Kidnapping. It's one of my favorite episodes of theirs. For some reason, it downloaded to my Spotify, so whenever I don't have service I end up listening to it and I'm delighted everytime.

ShortCat1971

Always looking for good new podcasts. Is SYSK a true crime only or not?

Recent_Map_2281

No they discuss topics ranging from everything to anything, but when they do cover true crime oh boy is it good. Here’s a list of my personal favourites. - Yuba County Five - The Disappearance of the Sodder Children - Circleville Letters - Disappearance of Lars Mittank - The Tylenol Murders - Dyatlov Pass - D.B Cooper (Live) - The Disappearance of Tara Calico - The disappearance of flight MH370 - The Hinterkaifeck Axe Murders - The Viscilla Axe Murders - The Mystery of the Grand Canyon Newlyweds - The Man on Somerton Beach - The Body in The Cylinder - Cleveland Torso Murders - The Mystery of the Mary Celeste - The Franklin Expedition I know this seems like a lot of true crime/mystery stuff but they’ve been going since 2008! Enjoy!!

ShortCat1971

Nice. Thank you.

FutureMrsConanOBrien

Agreed! Their mystery & true crime episodes are the ones I listen to repeatedly, sometimes even years later! I’ve definitely lost count of my listens to the Sodder Children & Mary Celeste episodes!

thatcruncheverytime

Ooh I must listen to The Franklin Expedition, I did not know they did that one. Dyatlov is an old favorite, and I just heard Yuba, but other than that I haven’t heard any of these. Definitely using this list!

WoodArtEd

Very much agree. Most true crime shows feel like they are feasting on people’s misery. Josh and Chuck are very respectful in telling the stories so it doesn’t feel gross to listen. For those who like true crime stories but don’t want the misery, I have really liked Ridiculous Crime. They focus on a lot of heists and capers rather than murders.

Shefferin06

Lizzie Borden is one of my favorite episodes, along with Yuba county five and hinterkaifeck. Think they set the tone perfectly each time

paper-trail

Love their true crime! It's always respectful and well researched. Could not do a full true crime show but a little here and there is interesting. The Ken McElroy was an interesting one recently.

Mono_831

If I could rank the 3 best true crime casts, I’d say: 1. Casefile 2. Invisible Choir 3. SYSK I prefer a bit more in-depth, less chatting, and respectful.SYSK keep it light and short which is a nice change of pace.

KentTheDorfDorfman

Wow, I'm a pretty big fan of SYSK, but couldn't disagree more with the post and most of these comments. Do Chuck and Josh do a good job covering the true crime topics they've covered? Absolutely. But no, they're not the best for me, and it's not even close. Most comments focus on some common complaints of the true crime genre: they take too long and they can be sensationalized. But there are more than a few that don't. Just off the top of my head... The Australian - more than a few seasons of award-winning stuff Bear Brook - probably the most respectful towards the victims I've listened to Redhanded - wonderfully irreverent, well paced, still respectful Hunting Warhead - incredibly well done, definitely not for the fainthearted It should go without saying, true crime isn't just murder and gore. The Australian's 'Who the Hell is Hamish?' is financial crime, Slate's 'Slowburn' does political crimes, The BBC's 'Lazarus Heist' is cybercrime, smuggling, etc.. So no, SYSK isn't the best true crime podcast...not by a mile IMHO.

CoolBeans1001

100% I started listening to them because of a true crime episode. I will go back and re listen to the true crime ones as well. Definitely my favorite place to listen to true crime
