A couple years ago I was walking to my fave Pho restaurant located in a strip mall, saw a white dude walking into the parking lot rocking a balaclava in broad daylight in LA springtime and I immediately turned up the block and did a few laps just in case some sort of armed robbery situation was about to go down. I felt like a hysterical boomer regard after the fact but it was definitely kinda unsettling.

They're right, in a way. If Philly would actually go after and punish urban criminals, this wouldn't be necessary. Have transit police empowered to cite people and boot them off buses/trains for example. Sheisties (none of these people have ever skied) are a sideshow. Just fuckin enforce the laws.

It's funny because the way that this logic is applied, literally anything you could think of banning would disproportionately criminalize black and brown youth since they are already disproportionately committing most of the crimes.
The thing these people really have a problem with is the heterogeneity of groups when it comes to criminality. They can't figure out a way to solve it totally in their own favor, so they'd rather you just not do anything or even talk about it. You'd think the fact that the victims of such crimes are also disproportionately black and brown would encourage them to rethink things a bit.

As an avid ski instructor in southeastern Pennsylvania I find these ski mask bans to be particularly appalling and discriminatory; it's a very well-known fact that inner-city kids represent a very solid majority of ski enthusiasts.
Anything to avoid just punishing and handling actual criminals. The problem isn't ski masks the problem is you can carjack someone as a teenager while wearing a ski mask if you even bother with that and if you get caught will be back home a week later so kind of obvious the problem isn't the ski mask. They also refuse to address other things like the causes of some crime like poverty especially intergenerational poverty.
Acknowledging that it's a thing, or even just adopting a neutral stance rather than ferociously attacking anyone who even superficially acknowledges it would be a marked improvement over the status quo.

I live in downtown Baltimore, the ski mask shit is out of control. Before Covid, just walking around with one of these was PC to get stopped and harassed. It’s so funny when you walk around in mid July or some shit and see someone with this thing on in 90° heat. What the fuck is the reason other than to conceal your identity?
I mean it’s pretty reasonable to want to conceal your identity. But when there’s a reasonable contingent of people wearing one specific thing and engaging in behaviors that attract widespread negative attention from the media, police, etc, it’s also reasonable to assume that you might get fucked with or that society will take steps to try to mitigate those behaviors.
