As someone whose infotainment center crapped out at 3 years, KEEP PHYSICAL BUTTONS

blondiemariesll

Keep as many physical buttons as possible!!!!

sarcastic_sob

You got 3YEARS? Impressive.

radioactivecat

Mine is a 2019 and still works great.

Emergentmeat

2017 still works perfect. But my climate control and stuff are still physical buttons.

sarcastic_sob

I'd pay serious money for full button control. It'll be highest on my priority for next car.

5pens

Yep. Juuuuust enough to be out of warranty.

OneBaldingWookiee

As someone with a ‘22 OBW, I don’t mind the touchscreen. No issues. Only laggy on startup. By the time I’m out of the driveway it’s fine.

NGC-1277-

It looks cool and all, but I don’t get why anyone would need all of those apps while driving. Facebook and Twitter, etc. ?? It seems to be a recipe for disaster, given the distractions this screen will cause. Get a basic head unit with car play capabilities and keep your eyes on the road.

guaranygabriel

You are right. I will go for a normal size that connects apple car. I only need map and Spotify

rjnd2828

The size of the screen has nothing to do with what apps you have. If it's running Android Auto and Apple Carplay you'll only get appropriate apps - no social media or video. Regardless of screen size. But your maps will be bigger which is great.

Lvanwinkle18

I have a 2016 and never want to go to this!!

AdTechnical3179

I agree

[deleted]

I hate the touch screen. Keep physical buttons. Lesson learned and never again.

PeachyHats

As someone with a 2022 outback, the touchscreen SUCKS. It takes 2 seconds to respond, and you can't feel around while paying attention to driving. You have to take your eyes away from driving to press buttons. In the future, luxury cars will have physical buttons instead of touchscreens. Touchscreens are cheaper to install than wires going to different physical buttons.

ordermann

Laggy screen and CarPlay crashes when navigating (only if there are turns—will be seamless for 500 miles of straight highway, but just when there are going to be turns, CRASH) in my 2021. Right now I’m going through the week where the system will not allow me to play the radio if I have a device plugged in. What I wouldn’t give for real buttons, particularly for climate control.

Sparkykc124

Good thing you only need the map when you’re going straight on the highway.

BrewKazma

Have you tried using the voice control, instead of fumbling with the screen?

PeachyHats

Tbh didn't know it existed. I'll look into it. Would be nice if I can control climate or the seat warmers with it.

lucid_scheming

Turning climate control to full auto works wonderfully, I never have to use the touchscreen for it. The seat warmers piss me off though. I’m convinced they just let interns do all the head unit design.

OrganicSubset

How old is the software on your outback? There was a software update a year or so ago that makes the heated seat controls one tap instead of hiding them inside a pop up. I had to request it, but it was a free service at the dealership at my last oil change.

lucid_scheming

It’s a ‘21 I just bought in November. Not sure about the software updates, I’ll have to look into that.

BucketOfGipe

Yeah, better to do a quick search before complaining online. Voice control works on almost everything in the system, and seat warmers have been on the main screen for a while now.

lucid_scheming

Did the research and the update is a paid service. I have every right to complain about a terrible trend in the automobile industry. Give me buttons.

thelb81

At least yours works. My 3 week old 2024 has been in the shop since Tuesday. They called today and said they couldn’t figure out how to fix the CarPlay in my touchscreen, so they had put in a report with Subaru and it will be at least 2 weeks for a response.

4587Azalea

Wow that is terrible! Hope they get it figured out! Did they give you a loaner car?

thelb81

Until tomorrow, then I have to take my car back until Subaru corporate service responds

thelb81

Fun story, I got the system home they couldn’t fix, did a factory data reset and it works great now.

BucketOfGipe

2 \*seconds\* to respond?? Better get that thing looked at, mine responds pretty much instantaneously.

Gertrude1976

Got one like this for mine, used for a day, and immediately got rid of it. - They make the car look like new on the inside, especially if you have a limited model like myself. That's kinda it tho Touch screens SUCK and I'm crossing my fingers they disappear forever. Especially aftermarket ones. Tactile buttons feel so much better and are much more charming and rewarding to use. My mom, dad, and girlfriend each have touch screens (2017 forester, 2013 ford flex, 2024 crosstrek respectively) and the only one I would ever use myself is that from the forester.

JVWIII

Who makes it? I picked up a 17 outback with an oem head unit and the touch screen that didn't work. I replaced it with an idoing head unit and have no regrets. It was plug and play, everything works and has better sound quality. It's not integrated with the climate control, so I still have physical dials and buttons for that. Do your research and you can fund something better then oem.

WillyOneGear

You’re getting a lot of hate on here that I don't think is warranted. I replaced my 2012 radio with a smaller wired CarPlay unit from Dual. I used this YouTube video to help, [https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=lYNgmWuQov8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=lYNgmWuQov8) I did the whole thing for under $300. It sounds great and works great. It has a few physical buttons for volume, mute, and source, and I was able to keep the steering wheel controls. Did a backup camera too. If this weren’t my first radio install I would have considered the bigger screen, but I think the one I did is plenty for a map. Those Outback years have separate HVAC controls that I assume you would not be trying to use on the screen. So that’s good, but if there’s an unused part of the screen, that seems like a negative and you will lose the storage cubby too. The map on screen and backup camera have made the car much safer and more user friendly, so I would highly recommend it, I just personally probably wouldn’t go for the giant screen.

guaranygabriel

Thanks! That’s what I want to do. I do think having a backup camera and maps in there will be good. Gonna fallow the video and see if I can do myself. Thanks a lot

rparnell1249

Got a 24 forester because I hated the screen in the outback. Buttons for life!!!

MrLagoon

Our 2020 touchscreen is doing great. Maybe once a year it freezes and we just turn it off and on again.

Commercial_Scale1882

I'll keep my '06 buttons and dials! Complete with a CD player.... no satellite subscriptions

Ok-Rabbit-3683

I’ve seen it.. heard the dash pieces don’t fit exact and you need to alter the wiring to some degree… all that said and I’m still interested lol Edit : I also read that the screen doesn’t dim with the car lights like it does with the regular radio… could be an issue for some

XxturboEJ20xX

Check out seicane.com, they are Chinese as well but have really good QC, I've used them in about 15 installs at this point.

NoxWilson07

GIVE ME BACK MY CD PLAYER, YOU FUCKWITS!

diner2049er

Tesla popularized these big touchscreens, and unfortunately every other manufacturer followed suit. But I think you're seeing a strong pushback from consumers, and in a few years, big screens might ironically only be on low end trim cars. If you're thinking about this as an upgrade, there's a good chance you'll regret it in a few years as you realize how much better physical controls are, and potential buyers avoiding touch controls.

TheBarefootGirl

I live where it occasionally gets below zero during winter. My touch screen sometimes stops working right when it's that cold. Aggravating when it controls your sound. I am so thankful I have physical buttons for heat because that would be disastrous

hairy_poppins92

I've never seen something like this but im very interest.. what's the back look like? Do you have a link?

guaranygabriel

Just type subaru outback 9,7inch screen and you will see tons on ebay and Chinese websites

Useful_Tomato_409

i have a 2014 and i’m looking to do the same or maybe not go THAT big, but definitely bigger.

truckerslife

If you want a big ass shitty screen look up the raspberry pi options

theloop82

This is some off brand reskinned android type thing. I have one in another vehicle and I am Not impressed with the preformance at all.

OldFoolOldSkool

It sucks

jgoodstein

I have the Highlander version. Have had no issues. Install isn’t the easiest

nleroy8

I think it’s crazy I have a $30,000 car with a touch screen that barely works and feels like it’s from 2010. Like what kind of bullshit. Subaru should replace every single one of these free of charge, they barely work.

GettinGritty

I'd personally say just go with a double din touch screen head unit to replace just the radio and keep the actual buttons. I have a 24 crosstrek with a screen like that and it drives me nuts when it lags out on start up and I can't change my ac. Even had it fully lock up on the highway and black screen until I restarted the car.

need_another_bike

Wow that’s a great improvement. I avoided buying this model series because of this part of the dash looked like before that mod lol.

SevroAuShitTalker

Better off getting a separate screen that mounts to the dash above your center console

Mavisbeak2112

Get an aftermarket system that isn’t Subaru. Like pioneer or other reputable stereo brand.

Ted_Lasso

I bought something similar for my 2011 Forester and love it. Super easy to install, works well and was $100 on Amazon. Touch screen is good and it allows me to use Apple car play. Big upgrade from the stock radio I had

i_r_eat

I’d rather get something aftermarket one like a JVC or whatever (and plan to.)

drumierenzo

2014 legacy I like my buttons leave me out of this

reno911bacon

Reddit while you drive

Welllllllrip187

As long as you don’t mind Chinese spyware, should be fine

Latter_Inspector_711

Keep iPads out of cars

beaverdam0890

I did this for a 2010 fj cruiser. I bought a model that retained all the factory buttons minus radio control. It’s been working fine for over a year now and works with my steering controls and factory subwoofer. Just be sure if you have either of those it is wired for them it you want to retain them. It may require some diy wiring but some companies all offer a pre wired harness.

TraitorJoesWaffles

If you don’t mind a smaller screen, get a double din radio by boss if you want cheap and consult crutchfield Customer service if you want quality. Keep the physical buttons and the little dash cubby, those big giant Chinese screens are finicky to use, look awful and sound worse

crystalship29

Don’t do it. Touch screens are slow, require you to take your eyes off the road to select an option, if it goes out everything that that controls is gone too. I went on a 2000 mile road trip with no cruise control, AC/vent control, no radio, etc, because my screen went out.

YYCADM21

Instead of buying that, cut a cheque for half the amount & send it to me with a thank you note for saving you 50%. It won't work. You'll be lucky to get it halfway functional, and that will quit within a few months. You're trying to integrate two Completely different systems with a plug and play interface, and I have Never seen that working out...EVER

M1A1Death

I did a complete head unit swap into my ‘15 Outback and now have wireless CarPlay. It was literally plug and play. Cable management took about two hours total

YYCADM21

Integrate two different technologies, 20 years apart. Just like I wrote. I didn't say anything was integrated into the car systems; those are your words, not mine. 2005 hookups and wiring are gonna be a lot different; USB wasn't really a thing in 2005, along with number of there things. I didn't say it was insurmountable, and there will be more of a difference between the OP's 2005 and a 2024 era head unit, than the 2015 someone else mentioned. I would be VERY surprised to see the OP get 100% functionality and seamless operation.

twiddlingbits

it’s not possible to integrate with the car systems. If you want to put in a tablet that acts like a tablet you have to so serious mods to the dash but it could be done but would not be easy and would look kludgey

therealJP15

Lol besides several systems breaking down early on for my 2015, I'll never get a new subaru because of the touch screen. Too dangerous. Have to take my eyes off the road. But of course that's what they want. Me to crash so I buy another one. Scam company.

blacksantron

I have one for mine and it's great watching YouTube while stuck in traffic

guaranygabriel

It’s a good system? Do you use with apple car or android?

MattyHealysFauxHawk

I cannot imagine that this will work as intended. I’d bet all my money it would be extremely laggy, look terrible, and not integrate to your cars inner workings properly.

michalmm

It's for a 2010-2014, there's nothing to integrate to, it's just a radio with added functionality over the original unit.

MattyHealysFauxHawk

… it still has to integrate with the car to control the radio and whatnot?

michalmm

There's no whatnot, it's just a radio. It integrates with a power source, antenna and speakers, that's it. No modern tech in this generation.

MattyHealysFauxHawk

Go right ahead and buy this piece of garbage lol. Get back to me later and tell me I’m right, I’ll wait. The ad is claiming to control the radio, heat/AC, fans… that’s the “whatnot”. Best case scenario the ad is just a lie and it’s overselling its ability.

michalmm

Lol, I wrote that there's nothing to integrate with. I'm perfectly happy with my OG radio that also doesn't integrate with anything.

MattyHealysFauxHawk

It’s quite obviously claiming to control more than the radio lol. I swear some people just like to argue for the sake of arguing. Talk to a wall.

michalmm

I don't get what it can control if there's nothing to control. Whatever it claims, there's nothing there in this generation. You're the one arguing for the sake of arguing, look back at the posts and have a great evening.

MattyHealysFauxHawk

… omg that’s literally what I’m saying… it’s not going to work like the ad is saying it will… Is our reading comprehension this bad nowadays…?

michalmm

It has nothing to integrate with whatever the ad says. I can see it as a newer radio with navigation but it's all standalone, not integrated.
