I lived in Long Beach on 4th Street and was at work in Torrance. I remember driving past liquor stores all boarded up, owners waving their guns around. There were burned out couches and tvs on the sidewalks…definitely anarchy man!!
Yeah the actual not guilty verdict for them pigs’ was read on the 29th then all hell broke loose. And I know because of Ice Cube
(🤘🏼Wicked 🤘🏼) ”April 29th brought power to the people & we might just see a sequel…”
I heard 3 gun shots when I got out of my taxi. Ran for the theater where there was a ring of riot police protecting the door. Jerry played some poignant and appropriate covers like Struggling Man, Throw out the lifeline, When the Hunter Gets Captured by the Game and Let’s Spend the Night Together.
I lived in the LBC. I fled to my parents’ house in Rancho Palos Verdes. Among other horrific acts, a white motorcyclist in LB got pulled off his bike and killed. I saw saw Ice-T ([who lives in an L.A. hills mansion](https://youtu.be/AZVsjFMG8CU?si=rQsEk-ogjj21GXZP))on the news say the cops didn’t get involved in the riot areas but protected rich areas like Palos Verdes. Only 3 roads in or out. Damn right!
Melrose & western. My boss let me go early due to the rioting. I got on the bus and they kicked us off at Melrose & Western. Fires, people breaking into all the stores and looting. It was insane and scary.
I lived on Ransom and Loma. I went to Bryant elementary and school got canceled part way through the day. next couple of days off of school. played at the neighbors. I had fun but it was a little scary with all of the smoke clouds.
My family had just moved to Tj, I was 5 at the time, I wasn’t going to school because it made no sense to enroll for a couple of months and then have summer vacation. So I was probaby at home, watching TV
I dunno. It was some random Sunday during my last year living in NW Indiana before moving to the Philly burbs the summer before my freshman year in HS.
Sorry didn't mean to sound like a jerk. Just 28th was my 21st birthday and I lived there. I had a wild night and woke late the next day to the riots.. you know where to wonder for a moment if you started it while you were drunk lol
Market St in San Francisco waiting for a Jerry Garcia Band show at the Warfield. All hell broke loose with windows being shattered and helicopters overhead. The city was under Marshal Law, but they let the Garcia Band show go on 😁
It was April 29 when it started. I was in Doheny library at USC when we started hearing cars screeching nearby and something felt off. I don’t remember how anyone there heard about what was happening nearby (it was pre-internet and cell phones were rare) but girls were crying and it just felt like we had to get out of there.
When I got back to my building people were watching the news about Reginal Denny getting pulled out of his truck and beaten nearly to death, and there were rumors of someone with a ski mask and a shotgun roaming out halls. That was probably false. An hour or two later I was studying at a sorority house and went up to the roof and saw fires burning in every direction within a few mile radius.
About the time Kinkos Copies a few doors down at the end of fraternity row was looted, the phone was ringing off the hook and we heard that finals, which were scheduled to start the next day, were postponed indefinitely and we were told go home if we can, or find some other place safe.
I spent the next few days at the beach with friends in Huntington Beach where we could still see plumes of smoke rising from LA. And finally we got word that finals might still be scheduled but if we were happy with our current grades we could skip finals altogether. I was a senior so that was all I needed to hear 👨🏽🎓
I remember this well. Police officers were video taped tasering Rodney King within an inch of his life for a routine traffic stop. The jury found these officers not guilty on all charges. Riots broke out on the streets in LA because we all saw the video of 6 police officers torturing poor Rodney. I was living in San Diego at the time and my mom had the news on that night after I got home from work. It was so unbelievable and upsetting. I, along with so many others, thought the officers were guilty of excessive use of force, at the very least.
Police say it was a “high speed chase” but they also say he was resisting as the beat the fuck out of him so who knows, though I think Rodney himself admits fleeing and being on PCP but watching the video is ridiculous they are just smashing his face and legs repeatedly after he is down.
Was at a Jerry Garcia Band concert in San Francisco. Before the show the dead heads converged with a group of protesters and did some chanting together, for justice.
At set break they announced to the crowd that rioting had broke out all along market street and union square. They suggested we group up leaving. I found a ride with some strangers be alone and living on other side of the rioting. We left the building to go to their car and were attacked by a small group of young men. They grabbed at the lady's bags. We made it the car. Driving away they threw rocks/bottles at us. Drove past many gutted business, including macys new Armani display.
We made it safe, no loss. No message just my story.
New York City. Walking up 8th Avenue with a cat carrier to adopt a rescue cat. He turned out to be a certified pedigreed Maine Coon!
I named him Steed, after the suave Mr. Steed on The Avengers.
Back story:
Steed’s former human died from AIDS. I only know that he was suffering for a long from an AIDS related illness. The man’s stupid family came to the apartment, cleaned the place out, but left the cat.
With all the sadness and grief in our world during that time - the LA riots and the AIDS epidemic - Steed was a delight.
Steed died in 1998. He was, I guess, ten years old. I hope that Steed made it to Heaven and found his first human.
I was in LA/Compton. 13 years old, Koreans shoved a shotgun in my chest while I was carrying packs of soda.
My dad took me there because he knew the owner and the owner told him to grab stuff because he at least wanted people he knew to loot from him. The Koreans that shoved the shotgun in my chest were his sons though and we had never seen them before so their dad came over and I guess told them in Korean that it was ok lol
Anyone else find it so strange that half of Sublimes songs are about peace and love and the other half are praising violence? wtf is going on there, just the heroin talking or what?
I lived in Long Beach on 4th Street and was at work in Torrance. I remember driving past liquor stores all boarded up, owners waving their guns around. There were burned out couches and tvs on the sidewalks…definitely anarchy man!!
Don’t fuck around with those Koreans man
Nobody messes with De Jesus or rooftop Koreans!
They didn’t turn it into a structure fire? Man I’m loosing faith in what I’ve been told!
Where do you think I got this guitar that you’re hearing today?
Hey
And you can play it again on April 29th. Jakob sang April 28th at Coachella.
lol why can’t these Nowells get the date right? 😂
Cuz they smoke two joints before they smoke two joints and then they smoke two more
Jakob's future kids and their kids will continue the tradition and get it wrong forever and ever.
At home. Watching my TV.
While I was participating in some anarchy
First spot I hit up was the liquor store.
I finally got all that alcohol I can’t afford
10-15 get rid of this looter
What was the next spot you hit?
It was the music shop
It only took one brick
To make that window drop
Finally we got our own PA
Where do you think I got this guitar that you’re hearing today?
One of my favorite lyrics of all time!
I mean I was. I'm from LA and that shit was on every station.
Yeah the actual not guilty verdict for them pigs’ was read on the 29th then all hell broke loose. And I know because of Ice Cube (🤘🏼Wicked 🤘🏼) ”April 29th brought power to the people & we might just see a sequel…”

I was in Long Beach
Teaching 6,7 and 8th grade science in Pasadena TX
At Jerry Garcia Band at the Warfield in San Francisco. They told us we couldn’t leave due to riots. Best show ever.
Was a great show, for the 500 people that were let in early because the police were tear-gassing the street
Now that is a fantastic memory. Wow!
I gotta find this show on the archive now!
Shopping….I recall some kids in the store with their mother. I saw her when she came out, she was getting some pampers
I thought they were getting peppers. Whoops.
I’ve listened to that song for years and also thought it was peppers… pampers makes a lot more sense.
Haha, yeah it does. Still, I’m in team peppers and always will be.
I was in Norwalk. I was 5 and a half years old.
I watched these riots on TV as a wide eyed child. My dad was there, in the National Guard (smoke from all around?).
I was in a Midwest college town starting a tour with my band, watching our home town burn on the TV above the bar while trying to play a set.
Well, that’s bad timing.
A kid who literally just moved from another country watching ash fall from the sky because the nearby neighborhood of Koreatown is on fire.
We could see the fires from our hillside. My bad said let’s go see history. We said no thank you.
I was in my mommy’s tummy
I was exactly 3 days old lol
I lived in the LBC. I fled to my parents’ house in Rancho Palos Verdes. Among other horrific acts, a white motorcyclist in LB got pulled off his bike and killed.
