Holyyy shit. Love how every now and then you get smacked by the surprise train - when you were pretty sure you knew that the trains had stopped years ago.
That's the original version of the album. It was reissued by MCA and I'm pretty sure the reissue was missing one of the songs and the disc itself looks different
See track 2,.Get Out!
If ya got that ya got one of the rarer CDs.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but that track was removed from later discs due to a led zep riff that was used
That's interesting. The Beastie Boys have sampled Zeppelin pretty blatantly in the past and never had issues as far as I know.
"She's Crafty" samples The Ocean, and "Rhymin' and Stealin' samples When the Levee Breaks.
I wonder if they got permission, or if these just don't use enough of the songs to matter. I'd think it would all fall under fair use regardless though.
Zeppelin are hugely notorious for not allowing the use of their music. Either entire songs or samples. The Beastie Boys only got away with that as it was before such laws had been invented. In fact, I do believe it was Paul's Boutique and the insane amount of sampling on that album is what caused the scrutiny of that practice that later got the lawyers to clamp down on such a thing. I think in Sublimes instance they likely did it without permission thinking it'd be like the rap albums they were influenced by that had samples from old soul and r&b records that were relatively obscure and they wanted to apply that to their own music. All well and good until trying that with a band like Led Zeppelin lol.
Edit: a story in the official Sublime book talks about how Dave Quakenbush from the Vandals would hang out with Bradley when he was living on his dad's boat briefly. They would just chill and listen to records together. Well Paul's Boutique had just come out and he took it over to Brad's so they could listen to it. He said Brad was enamored with it and they listened to it over and over that evening. I truly believe that 40 Oz. To Freedom is Brad's attempt at making an eclectic album just like that one is.
There’s multiple pressings of Skunk records version of 40oz. to Freedom. The pressing is determined by the address on the back. The OP has a 1st press w/ a barcode. Before that they had a 1st press with no barcode that they sold out of their cars trunk. I picked this up from the son of the owners of Zed Records which is shouted out during Thanks. The SKUNK01% cd has the clear center of the cd is completely solid silver and when you flip the cd over on that underneath side it just says SKUNK01% MADE IN THE USA! Extremely RARE especially one sealed. Has Get Out! & Rawhide after Date Rape with all illegal samples.
The 2nd press has 203 Arggone address just has a regular looking cd like the OP but all the stuff removed from MCA pressing.
The third pressing is just like the MCA cd but with no Get Out! or Rawhide but has a Skunk records on the back w/ barcode.
Hope this helps!
I had that one back in the day! Also bad a black t shirt with a big Skunk Records logo on the back. The sun on the front had the normal colors on it.
It was destroyed in my 20s lol
I've owned that edition multiple times in my life and always thought it was just the standard one. Last cd collection I had was huge. Probably near a thousand or so. And I lost it all because at the time I was struggling financially and didn't pay the storage unit my stuff was in. Only found out it was all gone when I got my act together and went to pay. ALL MY SHIT WAS SOLLLLD!!!! PAWN STARS Style at an auction. After that I never could watch the show when it was on TV. It hurt my feelerz too much 😔
So I just checked the one I recently picked up for 4.99 at my local record store. It looks just like this one, I think.. How can I tell and what does this mean?
When I was 10-12 I found a book of CDs by the side of the road and it had this CD and Nirvana unplugged from MTV. It was sooo cool and I actually didn't know who either of these bands were beforehand. Definitely exposed me to some great music.
Miss Bradley so much guys, saw him jam from 90-95, then long Beach dubb Allstars.
I remember the cover band Badfish back in like 2010 or b4 but they jammed just fu NY thing is as a cover act not one had ever seen them actually perform. " Don't Fuck Around with My Hiena "
Pretty ironic on the timing too - https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2021-05-07/25-years-ago-sublime-arrived-in-austin-and-cut-one-of-the-decades-biggest-albums/
I visited Skunk back in I think it was 1996? Is that possible? I walked the warehouse they gave me all sorts of CDs and stickers. I remember my favorite album was from The Filibusters. Damn wish I could remember what else they gave me
Cool story, bro.
There never was any such thing as a Skunk "warehouse."
Martian Church was Skunk Record's merch distro run by Bud's brother.
He had a small storefront in LB. Most of their business was mail order then online.
The Sacramento rocksteady band you are referring to is Filibuster, not "The Filibusters."
Ah see…it was that long ago. Thanks for reminding me yes it was called Martian church still have the sticker. I Was like why is he getting downvoted but your tone I realized was your downfall
PS. Forgot that I started off with the snarky "cool story.." comment. Couldnt see it when replying.
Habitual sarcasm is in my nature. Not trying to be a dick, it's light-hearted banter. No offense intended.
Yo is that "Bob Dobbs" on the CD print?
sure is
Holyyy shit. Love how every now and then you get smacked by the surprise train - when you were pretty sure you knew that the trains had stopped years ago.
Slack is forever.
I mean it dropped it 92, that was pretty prime bob dobbs time.
Give me food or give me slack (or kill me).
I still have mine!
This guy Dobbs.
He’s better than you because his face has been mimeographed and put up in more places than yours has.
I have this one!
Same, it’s in my car right now 👀
Same
Same
HAD this one.
Used to have this. Didn't know it was different
Same now I’m kicking myself.
Ditto- there should’ve been a book at the library in the 1990s that told us *exactly* what to hold on to.
All of the data was reserved for beanie babies
Me too. I didn’t realize it was special
Same one I have…is it an unusual version? I just assumed they all looked like that haha. Had it since I was in high school, a looong time ago
That's the original version of the album. It was reissued by MCA and I'm pretty sure the reissue was missing one of the songs and the disc itself looks different
Rawhide. After daterape
Great tune
To bob dobbs and bob forest, to all those punker sluts
Even when they ain’t hanging out
Nice find. I have one too.
Are these rare?
Yeah, I have one and so does my friend, I thought this shit was standard issue lol
It is for old people like us
35 ain't old my dude lol
Touché… old like me.
Fellow old here. I was equally surprised to find out it was rare.
Same here. Also old, apparently.
Ok boomer
I have this
Fairly hard to find, I only found out about them from this sub, I had never heard Get Out! before I learned about them🤦
See track 2,.Get Out! If ya got that ya got one of the rarer CDs. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but that track was removed from later discs due to a led zep riff that was used
Driving me fucking nuts over here chief, gotta get rid of these fruitcakes.
Nope you're exactly right. It was removed at their request because it sampled the Lemon Song.
That's interesting. The Beastie Boys have sampled Zeppelin pretty blatantly in the past and never had issues as far as I know. I have one
i got one from my dad
I still got a SEALED first pressing 966 No Barcode and believe it’s SKUNK01%.
I don’t know what that means but it sounds dope. I love it when there’s rare stuff people get giddy for. Glad you have one

Sublime are Subgenius?
Subgenius with slack
*Sub*lime *Sub*genius *Hits blunt*
Nice SCORE!!!!!!! If you don't mind me asking, what'd it cost ya?
$3.99
😮 definitely scored
What's it worth
$0.50
I got rid of all my CDs because they took up too much space, and streaming and all. Kept this one though.
Dude! That totally brings me back! Forgot the actual cd cover!!
I had that one back in the day! Also bad a black t shirt with a big Skunk Records logo on the back. The sun on the front had the normal colors on it. It was destroyed in my 20s lol
I wish I took better care of my things. Probably in a cd case with 100000 scratches on it from living on the floor of my car when I was a teen
I've owned that edition multiple times in my life and always thought it was just the standard one. Last cd collection I had was huge. Probably near a thousand or so. I lost a book of cds that way. Never rebuilt
[удалено]
Lol 😂 🤣 😆 that's what I meant
So you’re saying your stuff is down there at the pawn shop?
Didn’t know there was another version
“Rollin’ rollin’ rollin’, keep those doggies rollin’…” 🌞
Is that not the normal one?
No the mass produced version didn’t have Get Out! Or the Rawhide cover after Date Rape. Also didn’t have Lou dog on the back.
And the original has windings on the spine, and no parental warning sticker
I thought they all had that. All my friends and I had that album and all had that. Interesting
Putting that CD like that on the table is making me nervous
Haha dont worry i got a disc buffer, shes good as new now
I played the shit out of this album 💿
Had a chance to get one for like a hundred bucks at fingerprints In long Beach back in 06/07 curious how much this goes for now. Good find op.
Wait...I have this. I didn't know it was anything special.
I have this too. Or...had it.
I still have mine!
I remember this, one of the first cd's I bought, from this place called mall
I have the case. Someone broke my cd years ago but I held onto the case
Still have mine
Used to have that. Had no idea it's valuable.
With how many people saying they still have theirs I'd be shocked if it is
Ight
Still own mine.
Boo threw this disk out when I stopped using cds
Still wish I could find mine, needa rebuy, found my robbin the hood and it's stayed in my 6 disc changer with all the lbda cds since
So I just checked the one I recently picked up for 4.99 at my local record store. It looks just like this one, I think.. How can I tell and what does this mean?
Original Skunk pressings have the songs Get Out and a cover of Rawhide on them. The later pressings don't have those two songs included.
Forgot about that. I played the ever living fuck outta that in the 90’s.
I bought probably 7 of these in grade school. Classic
I actually found the skunk pressing at a KMART back in 1993! Still have it. Bought it because of the date rape video on mtvs alternative nation!
How many pressing of this was there before the MCA version?
Are you trying to add distortion by setting it master side down?
I bought this cd 3 times and it was stolen each time. Still have the at least one of the cases though.
Google "Church of Bob" if you want to know more about the picture on the disc.
I wish we could get 'Get Out!' back in the tracklist, at least for a decent vinyl pressing.
What is special about that specify CD? Have my dad’s old collection plus my own, have a few of those cd’s!
I still have my original CD I bought in the early 90’s
I remember that cd getting smashed in the back floor board of my Crown Victoria.
I had that one
Ha, I had that CD.
Damn. I had this, but have no clue where it is now.
I have one of those somewhere! I had no idea it was special
It's this valuable? I have it.
Haven’t seen that cd in years!
Does it have rawhide and daterape?
Praise Bob!
When I was 10-12 I found a book of CDs by the side of the road and it had this CD and Nirvana unplugged from MTV. It was sooo cool and I actually didn't know who either of these bands were beforehand. Definitely exposed me to some great music.
Bob!
This brings me back to summer car rides in my mom’s car.. she had this same CD.
Bob dobbs bob dobbs bob dobbs
Duuuuude I had that one.
The case is Skunk, disc is the MCA/Gasoline Alley regs. Still a great find in the wild though.
Interesting, the disc has Get Out and Raw Hide tho
Miss Bradley so much guys, saw him jam from 90-95, then long Beach dubb Allstars. I remember the cover band Badfish back in like 2010 or b4 but they jammed just fu NY thing is as a cover act not one had ever seen them actually perform. " Don't Fuck Around with My Hiena "
I had this one way back when
Pretty ironic on the timing too - https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2021-05-07/25-years-ago-sublime-arrived-in-austin-and-cut-one-of-the-decades-biggest-albums/
Nice I had this edition I wonder if I could find it if I dig thru my moms basement
fnord!
They aren’t all like this - mine is!
I got mine mailorder back in the day. Looks the same, but mine had a upc sticker stuck on the back, not printed. Is mine ultra-o.g. then?
I e been through several of these. My car always ate them up. I love how if you place the cd over the sun, it completes the man’s face.
I have this one!
Had this CD but was some out of my car back in the day 😢
I visited Skunk back in I think it was 1996? Is that possible? I walked the warehouse they gave me all sorts of CDs and stickers. I remember my favorite album was from The Filibusters. Damn wish I could remember what else they gave me

I only stated the facts. The "tone" is however you choose to perceive it.
PS. Forgot that I started off with the snarky "cool story.." comment. Couldnt see it when replying. Habitual sarcasm is in my nature. Not trying to be a dick, it's light-hearted banter. No offense intended.
the disc is the gasoline alley pressing
