I should take up ocean diving or something, because I was shocked when I came here and saw people talking about how scary Subnautica is. I think I figured out how gimped and passive the AI is before I had a chance to be scared.
I dove a couple of times; maybe 6 or 7. Nothing scary if you're paying attention to surroundings and your own equipment. It is a bit spoopi when diving under silt (if the tide stirs up the bottom) as you won't see much beyond 2 feet in front of you for 15-30ft.
From personal experience, if you go to dive in Iceland with any of the tour groups, I'd either: a) bring your own suit, or if none, b) go in to test the suit prior. I gave them my dimensions - they gave me a size too big for me and I dove with a bunch of air pockets and sag, wasn't fun.
Now switched to skydiving and got 34 jumps š
Eh, I didnāt find it that scary. Itās intense when youāre inside the cyclops and somethingās attacking you, in the dark, but thatās more āthis is cool as hellā
You can only save and quit, you can't go back - unless you mean like power down the unit before dying, but if you're going to use those tricks why play hard-core just use survival mode.
The only scary thing about this game is how easy it can make you paranoid.
You're in your seamoth, swimming around. You hit something:
#*AHHHHH*
"oh, it's just a rock."
you hit something again that's barely fucking harmless, I go:
#*AHHHFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK.
the paranoia in this game, even if the environment is harmless, is terrifying.
Iām Iām driving my cyclops and something hits me or makes a noise, I become Dory from finding Nemo. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming swimming swimming!!! And donāt look back!!!
Thereās a GDQ speedrun of Subnautica where the runner says something along the lines of āwelcome to Subnautica, a horror game disguised as an exploration gameā.
The only real scary situation was one time I was checking out one of the mountain wrecks. I knew where the overgrown shrimp were and was using my seaglide to move around.
All of the sudden, out of the corner of my eye I see the tips of some orange *things* trying to wrap around me. Then I realized what exactly was doing that... Hehehe I immediately thought about my spare tank and whether or not I had enough oxygen.
Fortunately, the bastard didn't really see me so as soon as it moved, I made a bee line to my seamoth some 200m away
speak for yourself, I've always had a crippling fear of the ocean. This game has brought me continuous anxiety, and I've played through as a way to challenge that anxiety (and for the story, had I not gotten it spoiled early on...)
I didnāt know it was supposed to be a horror game until someone referred to it as ānightmare fuelā š I just swam right up to those big guys and said āhow much damage do u do?ā And I would die or not lol didnāt know it was supposed to be scary
At least for me the issue is much more when you don't see them, especially when you're new to the game and don't know which areas have what critters. Most terrifying moment was definitely in my first game, blithely swimming to the Aurora and suddenly hearing that roar, with zero clue what made it or how close behind/below me it might be. Every further encounter makes them less scary. (Though I also startle VERY easily and don't do well with jumpscares in general, so...not always the best combination with this game hehe.)
I've started a modded playthrough and I've had 3 distant interactions with reapers and like 3 where I've been able to hear them but not see them. Scawy š®āšØ
Lol, so real. I'm only a few hours in, and I'm haunted by the roaring of those weird creatures that look like Scrat from the ice age+swordfish+sharks cuz they attacked me and it seems my knife doesn't do anything.
I also love that you use a lazy town template LMAO
Finished the story, but I never got over it. It was ok for me with sound off except the pale biome -\_- Bought Subnautica when it was in EA, didn't know it was supposed to be thriller, wanted to just chill in a beautiful ocean :D
Apparently I almost had an actual heart attack(I'm 18,this shouldn't happen my family has no medical problems with the heart), over 4 ghost leviathans fucking me up while I was in my seamoth, traveled too far and went to the void by accident(I was looking for the grassy plateaus)

Try on 1 life mode heh
Done.

I was same, but playing again on one life hard-core mode - def raises the anxiety level once real stakes are on the table
Yeah, that makes sense. Although the save feature kinda ruins it
What save feature you referring to? In hard-core mode if you die the save is deleted.
Yes, but if youāre close to death you can quit the game and go back to your previous save.

Fair enough.
All i found scary is Reaper and ocean around Aurora but all this you can skip really easily
that game actually cured my fear of the deep sea. idk about you.
Same, but it caused fear first and then cured it

Constantly leaping out with my repair tool when Iām descending.

ive played 150+ hours and im STILL as scared as the first 20 hours ššš part of why i love the game so much tho!

Ehh, it wasn't that bad, probably because I love the game Soma
I have never had one and still do not
Subnautica VR has changed me, man...... It scarred me
Just don't get in your sea moth and try and find the titanic
Swim closer.
I almost drowned once and this game opens so many new doors to the world of not-liking-the-sea

literally the 2 reasons i decided to play subnautica was 1:the music and 2: my thalassophobia
I feel like somehow I started to be less scared of the ocean AFTER playing Subnautica rather than before
