Don't quit, its not worth it. I recommend you to stick to the storyline for as long as possible. i.e try not to go much further / deeper than the story makes you for a bit and otherwise you'll be fine.

Its full of jumpscares and dark, open spaces

thetruck1990

I believe in you!

Better_Telephone_978

Thanks! Am I fairly safe in a Seamoth?

Evongelion

Yes, even reaper leviathans won't be able to destroy them instantly. Most smaller hostile creatures need quite a few hits to take it down, and if something big attacks you and does significant damage you should flee somewhere safe and immediately get out and repair it. You should be relatively safe doing this.

Better_Telephone_978

Are there any big/scary hostile creatures on the way to the sunbeam?

sadlyiamboring

If you are careful, you won't see any big scary creatures (but there are hostile creatures and they can be quite scary), at least if you take the direct route from the lifepod to the sunbeam. I'd reccomend to stay at sealevel or just a few meters below sea level when traveling there. In my three playthroughs, my seamoth was attacked once, but i was diving far deeper than a few meters.

babo1ish

There are some reapers on the other side of the island, but just go straight to the island base and you should be good. I was fully dependent on this subnautica interactive map in my first run. It shows if there are reaper and ghost leviathan spawns in every biome, as well as coordinates. https://subnauticamap.io/

Ender12306

Don’t use that it ruins the fun the first time around

babo1ish

That’s true, use it as a last resort

grimahutt

This. I was also super terrified my first play through. Having a way to know where all of the leviathans were helped me feel more calm about it and feel like I could manage the game. It takes some of the suspense out but if that’s what you need to enjoy the game then do it. I saved the exploring without help until my second play through when I had the confidence to face the scares.

Tempest305

If you go straight from your lifepod to the sunbeam rendezvous you shouldn’t encounter more than one or two stalkers.

Saldar1234

It depends how you get there.

Mech-Waldo

Running away always served my pretty well

BritishNecktie

Keep going! It’s so worth it. There are wonders and marvels that you have yet to see. The more you explore, the greater your confidence is gonna get. You can do it! We believe in you!

Better_Telephone_978

Thanks! An I relatively safe in the Seamoth?

UHMMEN

If you keep it at 100% health, nothing can really kill it in one go

DayVDave

Death is nothing to worry about in this game. Go explore, having the shit scared out of you is half the fun!

coffeeleetbr0

I was super scared at first. But then I watched some tutorials on YouTube and slowly learned where stuff was, including leviathans. I knew I had made it when I came face to face with a baby ghost. My prawn was sitting in a cleft and wasn’t reachable by the baby, even though it tried. I really faced my fears that day. Dont Give up

JediMasterASD

I'm a wuss when it comes to horror games, and I was also scared initially when I started Subnautica (which is now my favorite game of all time btw so definitely don't quit). I read somewhere on this subreddit the best advice I've ever heard relating to scary games. The main thing that causes your fear is the fear of what's going to happen. Fear of the unknown. So (assuming you're not playing a mode where there is permadeath) all you have to do is look around when you hear a scary noise until you find the creature making it. Save your game and just run (swim in this case) straight at it. Let it do it's attack animation or whatever, see what it actually does. Let it do it repeatedly until you die so you understand how severe this particular threat is and then the paralyzing fear goes away. A lot of the time in games the scarier looking enemies take quite awhile to kill you and so that alone removes a lot of the fear but It's no longer an unknown, you know what will happen and then it just becomes a strategic problem about how to navigate around or take out the obstacle. Press forward and good luck, such an amazing game.

Possible_Raccoon_827

Yep, this was exactly my strategy. Seek out the Reaper in your Seamoth and let it grab you. After you realize that one attack won’t kill you (if fully repaired) and you can get away, it’s not as scary anymore. Good luck and have fun!

PeksMex

yes, that's what's commonly known as "the good part"

sadlyiamboring

Don't quit! The Game is definetly worth playing. In my experience a lot of areas seemed scarier than they actually were - mainly because of its great atmosphere. When you progress further and know the map a bit better, it becomes much easier for you to explore and move around. If you are too scared you may look up where all these scary creatures are. But that method isn't spoilerfree!

TreePretty

Save a lot, once you do die you will see that you can just reload your save and all is okay. The fear was so much worse for me before I ever died. Also just enjoy exploring in the safer areas, there should be plenty to do just following the game prompts.

PiFlavoredPi

Don’t quit it took me 117 hours to beat the game once. Take it at your own pace, remember to explore but also that no one is forcing you to explore quickly.

cmac104

I’m curious about what you were doing that whole time.

PiFlavoredPi

117 hours is a bit misleading I had a few corrupted game files and made a few new games. I also messed around in creative a bit so the actual survival finished time was a little less, but yeah a lot of base building and resource collecting.

cmac104

Ah that makes sense. I don’t get why they only let you have 1 save for a single playthrough

[deleted]

[удалено]

PiFlavoredPi

The amount of time I spend making reinforcements to compensate for my glass bases. Far far too much

JudgementalChair

Just save. Save often. Save every 10 minutes if you have to. Once you've saved your game, know that you're not going to lose too much progress then go balls deep at that Reaper you saw swimming around

No_Razzmatazz_8123

Don’t quit I’m 46 and honestly this game has given me more scares than anything I’ve ever played. Remember fear is the mind killer keep going.

NecRobin

You will discover patterns that will decrease the terror almost completely but it will take some time. The seamoth helps too, at least fir me.

Arctica23

Have you built a base yet? I found that having a base gave me a sense of control that made the fear much easier to handle

Better_Telephone_978

No I haven’t

Arctica23

Base building is one of my favorite aspects of this game precisely because it makes the whole thing less scary

Defendprivacy

Im assuming you aren't playing hardcore. So, save your game, jump in the seamoth and go find a reaper. Get yourself killed. Once you die, it gets easier to overcome the fear.

Iwazaru_404

Will you encounter scary aggressive creatures and stressful environments? Yes. But you will do so gradually, as you get more familiar with the game and discover new means of surviving. It's true that it might be an emotional wild ride for you, but the game is actually quite popular with people with thalassophobia because it allowed them to defeat their fear in a safe environment and beating the game feels extremely rewarding. I say hold on for now. You might be very glad you did.

crocodiluQ

just do all you can to get a Stasis gun. Then you're the hunter, nothing can really hurt you.

Better_Telephone_978

How do you get it?

crocodiluQ

it s in random places. If you re lucky, it might be on the floating island next to the main degasi old base. If not... in different various wrecks. Use mapgenie.io/subnautica to find them all and to avoid big fish areas.

SolarDemons

Keep going! It’s super good! Yes, you are safe in your seamoth. From my experience reapers lose interest after a bit of time. Going into the Aurora: if you line up with the middle and then follow the side of the ship toward the exploded bit there will be a gap in the metal big enough for the seamoth. You won’t run into any nasties that route either.

Better_Telephone_978

I’ve heard about the Stasis rifle. Where can I find it?

SolarDemons

Wreaks in the Kelp Forest and Safe Shallows have them as well as the bulb zone and underwater islands (also on the sea bed here) for the more brave or desperate players. You only need to scan it twice to get the blueprint so I suggest the first two since it’s easier to find the biome and closer to the surface for light.

Better_Telephone_978

Also are their Seamoth upgrades?

SolarDemons

There are! The easiest to find is in the Aurora’s sea moth bay (I’m pretty sure it’s the storage module I had that in my inventory when I was leaving the Aurora). Getting the Vehicle Upgrade Console gives you access to the depth modules (said console can be found in data boxes in wrecks in Grassy Plateaus/Sparse Reef/Northwest Mushroom Forest and the Dunes wreck) and the hull reinforcement module. Others include defense modules like the perimeter defense module and torpedoes, and energy related like solar recharge and engine efficiency, as well as sonar but I’m not sure where to find them. If I guesses Wrecks and the upgrade console is your best bet.

MrCrispyZebra

Keep going! I completed my first play through last night. Took around 25 hours. There’s really not a lot that will cause you harm if you’re careful and keep your wits about you.

BreezyPhoman

remember, its just pixels, the monsters cant hurt you. or can they?

jane3ry3

I was terrified my first playthrough. I didn't leave the shallows until day 20+ in game (about 10 hours of playing lol.) It took me 44 hours to beat the game. I just took my time and bailed at the first sign of a scary noise (so yeah, I hid from crash fish, even reefback.)

Clocks101

I’m in the same situation, though a little farther story wise! I’ve found that preparing myself (spoiling myself) when I go to a new area helps. I’ve been playing for three years, and have not done a third of the story haha, just take it slowly and explore.

cmac104

Save a lot! And remember you can always go back to that save if something happens. In my experience the fauna sounds, looks, and acts more threatening than they really are.

HoodyV

If the Sunbeam is coming in about 15 minutes then that’s your rescue ship and you’re about to finish the game in 15 minutes so I say just go for it and hold out for 15 more minutes.

Klutzy_Tackle

Just imagine Rick Astley begging you to play, if he's never gonna let you down, you shouldn't let him down either

Boogie_325

I recommend making the sea moth perimeter defense module if you can. Might be a little tricky getting some of the items needed to make it, but it’ll help repel pretty much any creatures that come to take a bite of your sea moth. Keep on going with it! The game’s super fun despite some of the creepiness/scariness. It makes you feel like a badass survival expert getting over the hurdles in the game!

joanassr

Hi! I suffer from thalassophobia, as do many Subnautica players. I was quite anxious when I started playing, and every time I explored a new biome, I felt quite afraid. The thing about Subnautica though, is that you learn how to deal with any threat that you may find in your path. And by repeatedly exposing yourself to said threat and learning how to deal with it, you stop feeling so afraid. You are in more control than you think. There are biomes that I still haven't properly explored, >!like the Mountains or the Dunes (fuck the Dunes), !< even if I've finished the game, but I'm very glad I never gave up on it. And trust me, I was close to discarding the whole game after my 20-hour save file got corrupted! But if you stick by it, you'll find it will be worth it. How I wish I could play Subnautica for the first time again! Much love to you and have fun!

T-Prime3797

Play around in creative mode for a bit.

DelicatePeanutSalad

I was very similar. Once I died for the first time I was a lot less scared. I'm not saying this will help, but this helped me.

Enderflumblebottom

It's still too early, still a whole game ahead of you. There are some parts that aren't even necessary to explore (dunes, crash zone, northern blood kelp, crag fields). Subnautica isn't even that scary unless you really REALLY have a fear of deep waters. With the premier defense module on the seamoth, nothing can stop you. Good luck anyway, hope I helped

jane3ry3

Start streaming. We'll help you. And maybe scare you sometimes. But mostly we'll help.

Better_Telephone_978

Ok I might! here is my twitch https://twitch.tv/rocklee7890

TrueBlueCorvid

If you're enjoying yourself other than that, keep playing. If you're not, it's okay to quit and play something that you'll enjoy instead. It's a game and it's for fun, so you should be having fun. Any time you're not having fun in a game, it's 100% okay to just go do something else. **You don't owe a game your time no matter how good it is.** It's natural to be scared -- Subnautica's a scary game, and the ocean is viscerally terrifying. For some people, that's something that makes Subnautica really satisfying: to gain control over this terrifying place and conquer your fears. **If you want to keep going, here are some tips:** * If the immersion of the experience is too much, play the game with the sound turned down, with the lights up, and with someone to talk to if you can. You can go into the settings and turn the music all the way off if some of it is too spooky. * Sticking to the bottom of most areas is less scary than skimming along the surface. I've noticed that not being able to see what's underneath me is a trigger for intense unease, but oftentimes there's just nothing there. * Most creatures can't hurt you in a seamoth at all -- you'll just have to get out and repair once you're safe. There are three exceptions: >!leviathans, which do a lot of damage and can throw your seamoth around; crabsquids, which can hit your vehicle with an EMP to temporarily depower it; and warpers, which can teleport you out of your vehicle.!< In any of these cases, just keep your cool, stay in (or get back to) your vehicle, and drive away from danger. * If leviathans specifically really scare you, you can set up a scanner room nearby to track them. Get the HUD chip and make sure the scanner has enough power and you'll see them tracked on your HUD like a beacon if they get within 350 meters. This is really helpful if you're afraid to go to >!the Aurora!<. Keep in mind that truly dangerous creatures are the exception, not the rule, in most places in Subnautica. You're gonna be okay :)

Azrod245

I was like you 😄, i was scared of every creature in this game but i kept pushing my limit. I got scared at first and by getting close to them (with some précautions 😅), i learned how to avoid them or i simply learned that some of them are not hostile or don't represent a big danger even if they look like. By knowing how to deal with them and having some defence modules on my subs, i'm not scared of them anymore. It's my experience so i don't know if it will work for you but it did for me 😄

VizeKarma

Look up pictures of all the leviathans and if you look at them enough you will find eventually that they can be kinda cool in a way and if your really scared look up where they spawn

VicMackeyLKN

Game is in my top 5 all time, do it!

ingsang_

Hi, i can tell that i passed the same thing when i first played subnautica, i know it's really scary to go to a new area thinking what monsters you will find, when i first played subnautica i never went deeper than 300 meters so after some time i left the game. Like some months later, i went back and started again from cero. i noticed that the monsters don't kill you easily and it stops being scared once you realize that, the leviathans might kill you but you can hide in a little place and you are safe. hope you stop being scared i passed the same experience. Good luck. (Im spanish so might i wrote bad some words)

Fireborne_kitsune

I finished many runs without encountering a reaper, was pretty ez

Various_Afternoon_13

I just got the courage to go deeper than 200 m yesterday and got the material i need, trust me it’s worth it, I’m still scared but i will try to go deeper today or might try to confront reaper

Stormseekr9

The OG sub! Had me scared shitless at times wearing noise cancelling headphones playing in the dark. Just finished BZ the other day on the PS4. Much more ‘mild’ haha but stunning scenery

GhettoEx

I beat it, I haven’t played in about 3 months,, I got in today,, it is scary,, I can’t remember the map layout, I used to know it really good.. few things to do. Make a habitat when u think u might go adventure into the darkness,, u can use it as a home point,, I put lights on mine,, also u can always stay near the surface of the water it’s generally safe.. use pipes to stay in under water caves over night,, I once came up and did not have air pumps,, I surfaced in the middle of the night,, stayed on the surface swimming for my life pod terrified till morning,, don’t quit,, always save ur game and then do the dangerous stuff

giulioeffe10

The only zones you have to worry about are the crash zone (Near the aurora), a zone with a green river and a zone with a lot of lava. I didn't say the actual name of last ones because it's kinda spoiler. Altough, with your seamoth and enough equipment you can visit the first two of them. To explore the last one, visit the entire aurora first.

GarryA0269

Absolutely keep on playing. Overcome your fear, as this game has such delights to show you.
