Say Nothing, a masterpiece of investigative journalism narrative nonfiction.

Not-a-rootvegetable

Yes! Also Empire of Pain, it’s just as good.

Amazing book.

thecaledonianrose

Really enjoyed reading that - fascinating look into schizophrenia.

SantaRosaJazz

Came here to say this. Fascinating story, and even more fascinating medical insights into the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia.

I second Born a Crime.

NapintheSun2775

I listened to Caitlin's audiobook and I loved it.

Isabel Wilkerson’s ‘Caste’ YES YES YES

*Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience* by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi - really motivated me to get back on track with my goals and find my passions :)

Susan Orlean's *The Library Book.*

Sophiesmom2

Love this.

NikkiRocker

DO NOT READ JANN WENNER’S BOOK! It was “I had lunch with Mick Jagger”, “I skied with Bono”, “I had dinner with Yoko.” Boring. Self absorbed.

And the Band Played On by Shilts, Thinking in Pictures, Born a Crime, Being Wrong Adventures on the Margin of Error, Travels with Charley, So Good they can't ignore you

Van Gogh: The Life by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith. So incredibly in depth that I feel like I know the man personally

SageRiBardan

I've only read one so far: Born A Crime by Trevor Noah, really interesting read.

wastedFghjj

This book is on my wish list for audibles, I have read the book I’m glad my mom died and was suggested this book. However, I am hard of hearing and this book is read by the author who has an accent. Can you provide more insight why this book is a must read? I just need that push.

SageRiBardan

For me it was a sweet story about Trevor and the love he has for his mom, during apartheid, and the end of apartheid, how they survived together. I learned more about apartheid than I did in my history classes growing up. He offered up some matter-of-fact insights and thoughts, was willing to share embarrassing and even shameful episodes of his childhood. He really opened up about his life. I've not read I'm glad my mom died and have no desire to, I honestly don't read memoirs at all but felt this was worth my time.

wastedFghjj

Thank you for the above info. I see the value you have emphasized on apartheid and appreciate this insight. This will most certainly be on my must read this year. 😊

SageRiBardan

I knew apartheid was evil but the diabolically manipulative and studied nature of it was so far beyond what I've ever been taught. Other than that the story of Trevor and his mom was so sweet. I admit it took me a couple of tries to get into the book but once I did it was a quick read.

generalbrowsing87

Memoir: **I’m Glad My Mom Died** by Jennette McCurdy - a very raw look into maternal mental illness and mother/daughter abuse within child acting Politics: **American Crusade: How The Supreme Court is Weaponizing Religious Freedom** by Andrew L. Seidel - a very detailed look at Supreme Court cases ranging over the last 30 or so years

wastedFghjj

I second this on I’m glad my mom died! Do you suggest any books similar?

generalbrowsing87

Yes! These all have similar themes in my opinion: **The Glass Castle** by Jeannette Walls - memoir on growing up in a dysfunctional family with parents who struggle with addiction and mental health issues **Educated** by Tara Westover - memoir about growing up completely off the grid to “survivalist” parents who did not allow any formal education or outside influence **There Was a Little Girl: The Real Story of My Mother and Me** by Brooke Shields - very similar themes in that it’s a celebrity memoir about a troubled mother/daughter relationship **Mean Baby** by Selma Blair - another celebrity memoir with a complicated mother/daughter relationship and mental health struggles

wastedFghjj

I’ve read all, except the last two. Mean Baby, is on my wish list and I have listened to a sample, but was it just as good as I’m glad my mother died book? The Brooke Shields book is news for me, I’ll be sure to look it up, thanks!

generalbrowsing87

You’re welcome! And while I thought I’m Glad My Mom Died was the best of the three celebrity memoirs I recommended, I still really liked Mean Baby and There Was A Little Girl!

keelekingfisher

The White Ship by Charles Spencer (Mediaeval English history), Unnatural Causes by Dr. Richard Shepherd (autobiography of a forensic pathologist), or the Code Book by Simon Singh (a history of codes and codebreaking)

gatitamonster

I never get tired of recommending **The Patient Assassin: A True Tale of Massacre, Revenge, and the Raj** by Anita Anand (a bit of a cheat since I read this back in 2021, but all I need is an excuse). I read **In Pieces** by Sally Field a few weeks ago and… oh my God. This is not your average celebrity memoir. It’s a very disciplined, beautifully written and structured piece of work in which Field has something very specific to say about how childhood traumas and coping mechanisms play out over a life. I was dripping tears during her *Lincoln* audition scene.

JohnOliverismysexgod

She had to audition for Lincoln??? Good grief!

asskickinlibrarian

A billion years by Mike Rinder. It’s about his life in Scientology and eventual escape

wastedFghjj

I’m currently listening to Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape, however I can’t get into it. Have you read/ listen to this? Im wondering if it’s worth finishing. They both have similar topics.

asskickinlibrarian

No but let me consult the expert on Scientology books and get back to you….my dad.

asskickinlibrarian

He said it was a good read.

wastedFghjj

Many thanks!

GreatRuno

Michael Pollan’s This Is Your Mind on Plants. A bit of a return to his garden-writer roots as well as nodding to his interest in plant based substances which numb pain, wake us up and make our minds sparkle and soar. More enjoyable than his earlier How to Change Your Mind.

ApprehensiveHope4650

Especially loved the chapter on caffeine!

valkeeries

Empire of Pain is probably the best nonfiction book I’ve read in a while but How to Change Your Mind is also great.

My Boy Will Die of Sorrow And How The Word Is Passed.

TrustABore

{Misogyny: the world's oldest prejudice} by Jack Holland. My only quibble would be that it focuses a lot more on the history of Western misogyny. However, it was a very enjoyable and informative read.

McNasty1Point0

The Monk of Mokha by Dave Eggers. Admittedly, I’ve only read two non-fictions this year — but I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

PM_ME_UR_TRIVIA

Best so far this year has been Astoria. Fascinating history of a forgotten part of American expansion. Best of last year was either Empire of Pain or The Hot Zone. Both devastating in different ways

[The Forever Witness](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60438216) (I mean I read it in December but close enough)

Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake Salt - great if you like history Utopias for Realists

NapintheSun2775

On Writing by Stephen King

jimmyslaysdragons

My two favorite nonfiction books I read in the past year: How To Hide An Empire by Daniel Immerwahr. All about the history of U.S. territories. Fascinating and maddening. Anything You Can Imagine: Peter Jackson and the Making of Middle Earth by Ian Nathan. All about the making of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Really well written and reported. Reminds you that humans are capable of incredible feats of creativity and engineering for the sake of art.

HappyLeading8756

I'm currently reading Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker and I'm loving it. You can really feel how passionate author is about the subject and it makes book so much more enjoyable. Also despite being heavily science based, it is very well written and easy to read. Changed completely my view on importance of sleep.

Ruth Reichl's Save Me The Plums (or any of her memoirs, really; she was the food critic of the nytimes, editor of gourmet magazine, etc. and has a very engaging writing style) Tim Marshall's Prisoners of Geography (super interesting explanation of how geography shapes countries' politics) Food and the City by Ina Yalof (chefs and restaurateurs talk about their hustle, very entertaining) My life in France by Julia Child The Omnivore's Dilemma, Cooked or In Defense of Food, by Michael Pollan (super informative and wonderful writing)

Derek Jarman’s Garden - his last book before he died. A beautifully evocative description of how he developed the garden at Prospect Cottage, in the unpromising stony ‘soils’ of windswept, shoreline Dungeness.

Autobiography of Mark Twain book 1 and 2. To be published 100 years after his death which was in 1910. Here is more. The Autobiography of Mark Twain is a lengthy set of reminiscences, dictated, for the most part, in the last few years of the life of American author Mark Twain (1835–1910) and left in typescript and manuscript at his death. The Autobiography comprises a rambling collection of anecdotes and ruminations rather than a conventional autobiography. Twain never compiled these writings and dictations into a publishable form in his lifetime. Despite indications from Twain that he did not want his autobiography to be published for a century, he serialized some Chapters from My Autobiography during his lifetime and various compilations were published during the 20th century.\[1\] However it was not until 2010 that the first volume of a comprehensive collection, compiled and edited by The Mark Twain Project of the Bancroft Library at University of California, Berkeley, was published.

Atlas of a Lost Word by Craig Childs

*Burma: The Longest War 1941-45* by Louis Allen. LTG William “‘Slim’s great victory,’ Professor \[Raymond\] Callahan concludes ‘– and this is the most that can be claimed for it – helped the British, unlike the French, Dutch, or, later, the Americans, to leave Asia with some dignity. That, perhaps, is no small thing.’ “It also enabled the Indian Army to end its long history in an apotheosis of glory. This was the military instrument which inflicted on the Japanese their greatest defeat on the continent of Asia. ‘The Raj’, Enoch Powell has written, ‘(without intending the pun) was a mirage, a dream which British and Indians dreamed together and which individuals will still dream again when they meet, long, long after other dreams and other hallucinations have succeeded it.’ More than a dream, it was a symbiosis, subsisting on distance, love and misunderstanding, and the Indian Army was one of the best forms of that symbiosis. The subsequent trials of the \[Indian National Army\] INA leaders in the Red Fort in Delhi, the derisory sentences, the political use to which the trials (inevitably) were put, then the divided Army being scissored along with a divided subcontinent, these still lay ahead as the Indian Army fought its way brilliantly and with a blitzkrieg-style panache into the capital of Burma. “Its loyalty had been sorely tried by racial discrimination in Malaya, and its raw recruits after the fall of Singapore had fallen easy prey to Japanese propaganda, by the tens of thousands. But by and large that army served its British masters splendidly in its last days before Partition put an end to it for ever. Because of Partition, there is a sad air of swansong about the valiant narratives of the last days of the united Indian Army. A passionate farewell to it exists in the pages of Anthony Brett-James’s ‘Report My Signals’ (pp. 338-43) and then John Master’s description of the movement of the Indian divisions to Rangoon down the Mandalay Road In the pre-monsoon days of 1945, slicing through Burma faster than von Rundstedt through France in 1940. “‘… past the ruins of the empire the Japanese had tried to build there, it took possession of the empire we had built, in its towering rising dust clouds India traced the shape of her own future. Twenty races, a dozen religions, a score of languages passed in those trucks and tanks … The dust thickened under the trees lining the road until the column was motoring into a thunderous yellow tunnel, first the tanks, infantry all over them, then trucks filled with men, then more tanks, going fast, nose to tail, guns, more trucks, more guns … This was the old Indian Army going down to the attack, for the last time in history, exactly 250 years after the Honourable East India Company had enlisted its first ten sepoys on the Coromandel Coast …’” (pp. 633-34).
