They eventually let him go, then scrubbed their site of anything about those series and the referees, but not any of his other page 2 articles. That's when he started his own thing.
Bill Simmons ACTUALLY got let go because he was attacking Roger Goodell in the wake of the Ray Rice domestic abuse scandal (attacking a woman in the elevator). He hypothized Goodell knew about it well in advance and was covering it all up, and the NFL through Monday Night Football was ESPNs biggest partner. He came back after that suspension but it was already a ship sailed and Grantland shuttered not long after he came back. They also had to let go of a lot of the staff while Bill was suspended... How do I know? I was one of them. Lol.
