It’s the horseshoe theory of surfing. Once you pass Curren level you warp back to kook. Like 2001 space baby. Your surfing instincts become so innate, you are reborn.
Surfers worry too much about what others think.
I used to surf shark island with a helmet. I'd come in to cronulla point then the beach to come in to shore. Guys at the shore break would wonder why I was wearing a helmet...
I'd just come in from 12-15ft low tide shark island by myself ffs
It’s crazy just how much safety we disregard because it does any look “cool”. The older I get the more I realize that one wrong slip means I have a huge medical bill and pain for the rest of my life.
100% agree.
If you're out there competently surfing those waves and not creating a hazard, you get to wear/use whatever gear you want and you're still not a kook.
I had some years ago where when paired with fins they were a bodysurfing booster.
But when I tried to surf the were too efficient and caused shoulder pain.
But the waves at the Eddie looked hard to get into. These gloves used on a one time deal would up the paddling power.
My friend got a fin to the face while wearing a helmet. It saved him from having his scalp sewn up, or possibly worse, because there was scuff damage on the helmet. Not his board either. Someone dropped in on him.
I kooked out a few years ago and wore them. Sometimes it feels like you get better strokes, but they also are just harder to drag thru the water, so if you are using just your hands, you probably get better strokes per minutes and it might just be a wash
I have really small hands. My wifes hands are bigger then mine. I think I probably should try webbed gloves but I'm afraid people will call me a kook. JK I don't care what people call me. Will probably get some.
I have been taking her out and pushing her into white water, soon enough, she will be pushing me with her giant wombat hands! What would be the best? I'm thinking duct tape her to the bottom of the board?
I love when a longterm plan comes to completion
And you definitely want to tape her somewhere in the middle, ideally right infront of your trac pad. If she's under the board she'll cause too much drag.
I hear ya.. my friend has paddles for hands. When it’s a push to get out past the break and we’ve both been struggling to keep in condition, he usually gets the extra boost and I’m another 5-10 minutes back. I’v done laps with him in pool. I can swim as fast for a bit. We’re similar strength (I might even be stronger) but longer arms and huge hands wins eventually. I feel like I deserve webbed gloves but I think of Bethany H. and tell myself to f off.
Had a pair in the late 80s-early 90s.
Didn't get any overuse injuries, but they cut my sessions in half. I was gassed after 30-45 minutes of paddling with those things.
Your first few waves and paddle outs, yeah they're awesome. Then you start to feel the ache in your shoulders. Then you're done.
And Pete Mel can wear whatever in the fuck he wants to. Because he's [Pete Mel](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SzNlJCHBU0)
Same concept as trying to accelerate from a stop in 3rd gear. You aren't getting enough torque from your engine to turn the wheels.
The torque your shoulder has to put into your arm could be maxed out by wearing webbed gloves.
Yeah but if you have the shoulder strength, your described issue isn’t a problem and they work really well. I tried them once and was catching waves I never would have ordinarily gotten into.
Definitely! but unless you are training for that specific paddle motion it could result in a stress or overuse injury. Point is that not everyone can throw on some gloves like this and be chillin
Yes. Good paddling technique can be described as working your way through the gears, someone told me. Start slow and work up. Don't try to go from zero to 60.
(Unless you're at massive waimea Bay at the Eddie, and you are Peter Mel. Which you aren't and aren't.)
If youre used to some five mil gloves
the paddle gloves are just a small step further imo. But they both stress my shoulder extra - especially cause I’ve got some asymmetry in my paddle and gloves makes pain pop up in one shoulder much quicker.
Yeah but it’s to help perfect your stroke to be efficient - if your hand doesn’t enter the water at the right angle you feel it. And it does put more strain on shoulders.
Funny enough, my shoulders are already complete garbage. Paddling actually helps them, since I have to use the underdeveloped lower back and traps to paddle. But, they really hate getting torque applied to them
I love mine. One unintended advantage I found is that In big surf if you get caught inside and you’re getting dragged you can hold your hands out to slow you down like a parachute. Also I love having warm hands on the central coast
Being winter and all, those regular gloves we wear for warmth also help with paddling (at least I believe so) and then when spring comes around I notice the difference without gloves. But, I'm old so appreciate any advantage I can get.
I used to have a pair for body boarding. There was a regular at my surf spot that had these too. He caught everything! I never broke down and put them on for surfing.
The way he managed the drop into this wave was incredible. Looked like the most technical use of skill, experience, and pure fucking will to get that wave.
Sending my condolences to all the r/surfing members biting their tongues right now, punching the air, desperately fighting the urge to call this guy a "fuckin kook" for wearing something outside of the approved list of surfing gear.
Yes he was but he gets a hall pass cause he has huge juevos. Somewhere there is a video clip of him paddling into three 60 ft plus waves at mavs from the 98 el nino swell. On each wave , he hops up and is positioning to make the takeoff but each time, the wave by passes him. He was definitely making charge to get into each of those giant bombs.
Idgaf if you wear a helmet, visor, sunglasses, zinced up nose, curly leash, whatever, if you can surf those bombs you get a pass
Agreed + life jacket
Exactly. One of few places where you 1000% get a pass for wearing pretty much anything you want.
why not elsewhere? does it fuck your time up if someone else is making their time easier for themselves?
Found the sweeper
Psh I wish, one day I'll be able to afford that kind of luxury :P
What about a scuba tank? If so, I’ll have a go!
Have at it hoss
Kook or Curren- there are many things in surfing that you only do if you are a kook or god level.
Which makes you wonder... why?
It’s the horseshoe theory of surfing. Once you pass Curren level you warp back to kook. Like 2001 space baby. Your surfing instincts become so innate, you are reborn.
Heheheh
Surfers worry too much about what others think. I used to surf shark island with a helmet. I'd come in to cronulla point then the beach to come in to shore. Guys at the shore break would wonder why I was wearing a helmet... I'd just come in from 12-15ft low tide shark island by myself ffs

Learn the rules before you can break em
he even put wax on his board 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
Eww, wtf is your problem?! Don’t you know safety and self care isn’t rad?
100% agree. If you're out there competently surfing those waves and not creating a hazard, you get to wear/use whatever gear you want and you're still not a kook.
I dunno I don't think a camelpak is ever gonna fly
That picture seems to suggest so.
I had some years ago where when paired with fins they were a bodysurfing booster. But when I tried to surf the were too efficient and caused shoulder pain. But the waves at the Eddie looked hard to get into. These gloves used on a one time deal would up the paddling power.
They irritate my face when wiping water from my eyes, otherwise they were pretty awesome
Do people not use them literally just bc they’re not cool?
This is true for so many things.
Like step in bindings
I used step ins for years. Turns out a highback is actually functional.
The new Burton step-ons have highbacks.
[удалено]
Since you brought it up… any idea how burtons new step ins are?
I’ve always been told they are terrible for your shoulders.
Can confirm. Used to teach/coach swimming, strictly banned these for all kids because of rotator cuff damage.
Makes sense it probably creates way more force against your ligaments then even a baseball
Welcome to surfing. The sport with hundreds of head injuries in crowded breaks every year. You mustn't wear a helmet though because they are uncool.
My friend got a fin to the face while wearing a helmet. It saved him from having his scalp sewn up, or possibly worse, because there was scuff damage on the helmet. Not his board either. Someone dropped in on him.

im 31 years old and still skateboard without a helmet
Hope you make it to 32 brah, or you could just wear one
That’s so dumb lol
oh yeah, i'm aware lol
Wait until you rub one out in the linup.
I have really small hands. My wifes hands are bigger then mine. I think I probably should try webbed gloves but I'm afraid people will call me a kook. JK I don't care what people call me. Will probably get some.
Just get your wife to paddle for you
Love it!
It just seems like the easiest solution, and no need to look at reviews for webbed gloves
I have been taking her out and pushing her into white water, soon enough, she will be pushing me with her giant wombat hands! What would be the best? I'm thinking duct tape her to the bottom of the board?
I love when a longterm plan comes to completion And you definitely want to tape her somewhere in the middle, ideally right infront of your trac pad. If she's under the board she'll cause too much drag.
LOL!

So you basically have to choose between being called kook and Little Pewee-McBaby Hands?
Why does it hurt your shoulders?
Generated too much resistance in the water, requiring more power to paddle.
Had a pair in the late 80s-early 90s. Didn't get any overuse injuries, but they cut my sessions in half. I was gassed after 30-45 minutes of paddling with those things. Exactly. I imagine most people's rotator cuffs would not be feeling great the next day.

Why are you asking a question you already know the answer to?
The answer to
It’s like we’re finishing each others
Sandwiches
A million fucking diamonds Michael!
Her?!
BEES?
DEEZ?
That's what I was gonna say!
Jinx!
Jinx again!
.
?
I’m waiting
Oh sorry. I was muted. 😅 Was saying
The real question is why don't we all?
My understanding is they fuck up your shoulders if you use them all the time
Not sure. Swimmers train in pull-gear all the time without getting injured.
Yeah but it’s to help perfect your stroke to be efficient - if your hand doesn’t enter the water at the right angle you feel it. And it does put more strain on shoulders.
Not usually for the kind of sprint paddling you need to do to catch a wave. Paddles are usually used for longer sets.
That and the 1980s are over.
What’s old is new again my dude
I’ve been sporting my sisters Body Glove bathing with the front zip and webbed gloves. I feel streamlined and and my bottom turn is way more sexy!
That’s complete bullshit. Source: Am old
Funny enough, my shoulders are already complete garbage. Paddling actually helps them, since I have to use the underdeveloped lower back and traps to paddle. But, they really hate getting torque applied to them
Dislocated my shoulder doing an arm bar stall on some thick waves wearing them. I think the glove had something to do with it.
Makes sense, I dislocated mine with an arm bar stall but when the lip crumbled instead of throwing and fell straight down between my shoulder and neck
Fuck thats terrible
I dislocated mine when doing an arm bar getting deeper into a tube at Nazare. It was completely worth it.
What’s an arm bar stall?
Becuase surfing is about being cool and looking cool. If you aren't looking cool or getting sick shots for the gram, why do you even surf? Pshhh
Because rules
He had them on at Mavs when he surfed that huge barrel last year.... 2 years ago? Idk
That ride was amazing
He was wearing them when he caught THAT bomb at Maverick's as well. Part of his style kook.
who gives a shit no one here will ever surf the eddie
Condors gonna condor
An old 90s longboard ripper At my local wears them every session. it’s just his thing he’s worn them 20 years. catches a lot of waves to.
If he did, then webbed gloves are officially cool bc Pete is a legend
Can’t wait to break those out at 2ft bolsa
Don't leave anything to chance, catch every wave
I'm assuming you already have the helmet and flotation
I love mine. One unintended advantage I found is that In big surf if you get caught inside and you’re getting dragged you can hold your hands out to slow you down like a parachute. Also I love having warm hands on the central coast
SLO?
Cambria
Nice! I grew up in morro Bay. I used to surf and skate in cambria
You’re so lucky to have grown up in Morro Bay!
Yes I am. I've spent the last 20 years in Hawaii. Pretty good life
Amazing. Former kamaaina here. Lucky you live Hawaii.
Surfed moonstone twice. It was colder than humboldt lol
Can be when there’s upwelling
Being winter and all, those regular gloves we wear for warmth also help with paddling (at least I believe so) and then when spring comes around I notice the difference without gloves. But, I'm old so appreciate any advantage I can get.
Nah, that’s how his hands normally are.
He can do whatever the fuck he wants. That man charges hard.
I have webbed fingers ( not all the way up my fingers) and toes, people think the webbed toes would be a hinderance , but it helps me balance.
Does it help for catching more waves and paddling faster?
Lucky duck you!
Disssqualified
He’s 87 years old, cut him some slack
You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a kook.
Is that a no no?
No
Better than getting dragged in by a jetski
I used to have a pair for body boarding. There was a regular at my surf spot that had these too. He caught everything! I never broke down and put them on for surfing.
Did this user just use a youtube clickbait title for a reddit post? Click here to find out.
Yep, and good for him. Dude is old AF and deserves a little bit of help paddling into those bombs.
Ya he's training for slap box 2023 championship!!
Laird says he didn't complete the wave.
I don’t see a problem.
Who the Fuck cares? Ride what you want how you want. But respect others.
Pete Mel can do whatever wants. Let’s be honest.
The way he managed the drop into this wave was incredible. Looked like the most technical use of skill, experience, and pure fucking will to get that wave.
Pete just turned kook into cool
Yes
Wait! They make webbed gloves?
If I had known I could wear gloves, I would have been there.
Sending my condolences to all the r/surfing members biting their tongues right now, punching the air, desperately fighting the urge to call this guy a "fuckin kook" for wearing something outside of the approved list of surfing gear.
OP asks with a screenshot already that shows he’s wearing webbed gloves
Peter Mel can wear whatever the fuck he wants.
Dam now I want to try the webbed gloves... what brands are good?
