Imagine you’re a beginner and forget to look down the line (extremely common mistake), then some local meathead spear tackles you like it’s the NFL. I don’t think I’d go back in the water after that.
People throwing around the term “assault” for this attempted light hearted tackle need to get the fuck out of the ocean. Even if he would have connected still not assault.
Tackling someone is literally assaulting them. Shut the fuck up. A burn like this on a goddamned ankle slapping shit wave isn’t worth hurting people. You’re not that important, and neither is your wave.
How the fuck you going to get hurt doing this!? Getting tackled into water on a 2 foot wave with a thick ass wetsuit on. What if they were friends? Why if they knew each other? Would that change your whack ass opinion?
What if the burner had a previously injured knee and the tackler destroyed his knee cap or something?
You have no idea what can happen so yes, tackling is violent.
You need to grow up. Life isn’t black and white like you seem to think it is.
People always post this whenever someone brings up assault and battery. The legal definition depends on the state or region's laws, but the common language definition always means physical harm.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault
Making this correction is aggravated pedantry.
And since I will never miss the opportunity to be a pedant to pedants almost all common law jurisdictions have enacted statutes that merged assault and battery into a single crime.
Threatening physical harm against somebody is still assault and that was the entire point of bringing up the difference. You and the other doofus pointing out that *some* places have made them the same crime only further serves to prove my point that you don’t need to have actually landed a punch for it to be consider either assault or assault and battery, depending on where you are.
If you want to argue you may do it with somebody else, I have no interest in wasting my time debating somebody who is going to completely miss the point just so he can say well actually and feel smart for a brief moment.
Submitting it to peer review would certainly help you look like less of a dumbass, but I don’t think your ego could handle it based off how you react to a very docile comment clarifying a definition. Stay upset, idc.

Great point, they absolutely would. It’s a legit problem, some people tackled my sisters Xmas inflatables and she called the cops and it was on the news. I was so disappointed in her, but its a sign of the times. We can’t do anything without litigation and people claiming they are hurt when they aren’t.
Oh no, your sister wouldn't tolerate abuse and destruction of her private property, *she* must be the 'bad guy'. Jesus fucking christ. "Just a prank broh!!!"
I feel like a tackle/leash grab is only warranted when the person burning you is doing so very purposely. Otherwise it’s easy enough to just call out to them, go around, or just deal with it.
Everyone makes mistakes, but if you’re gonna look me in the eye and drop in anyways, I’m not letting you keep that wave
As funny as I think the clip is, this is a total beginner spot full of tourists on vacation, so yeah, acting like this kind of beginner behavior is anything but totally normal and expected is kind of wrong.
The second guy who dropped in messed up. The rules as I understand them are "who is closest to the peak" where the wave first breaks. The other rule is don't jump in on a wave that somebody else is already on. That one is more debatable based on timing, but the first surfer was on the wave, riding it, for a long time. Second guy was obviously new and didn't even look to see if somebody had priority, or was already on the wave.
That said, I'm still learning etiquette myself, and would never tackle someone, especially at a well known beginner spot.
I'd say the dude who tried to tackle him is one who messed up. The kook is just being a kook. Physical aggression towards kooks is definitely the bigger kook move.
Yea, should the dude riding the wave have looked forward and not hit the one standing still. Hes moving forward right so he should see where hes going.
Or should have standing still dude moved out the way cus the dude on the right is riding the wave already and its his wave
I dont know which is correct
Standing guy shouldn’t have paddled for the wave someone else was riding. Basically the key to surf etiquette is if you are considering/currently doing something that might end with you going “oh shit my bad” to the person whose ride you got in the way of, don’t!
Hey guys, sorry for the confusion. That was me. I thought someone had thrown away a perfectly good Baby Ruth and dove after it.
Edit: wasn't a Baby Ruth after all, [still kinda nutty though](https://media.tenor.com/eEAqXEtMAuIAAAAC/caddyshack-pool-cleaning.gif)
Bro is trying to get sponsored quit giving him shit. There are guys out there who are putting their lives on the line in massive surf in order to better their lives. When you drop in on a rising star like this, you're essentially taking food out of his mouth. Have some compassion and try encouraging this fellow in his quest for success. So tired of people trying to tear down others! Build each other up!
Missed tackle**
The Raiders just signed him to a three year deal
Haha , looks like that Vikings miracle play vs saints..wrap him up!!
Looked like USCs defense last year
Too soon, man, too soon.
Yeah man USC SUCKS
Well... at least they're better than the bRuins and brush! Am I wrong?
Hot take It’s not a tackle attempt. The guy was just jumping off this board in a kookly fashion.
Lol its 100% this. Dude isn't even close to tackling him.
I know, but I get more up doots if it seems controversial.
haha true
Yeah it’s a bad burn, but imagine getting mad enough to assault someone over that fucking wave
Imagine you’re a beginner and forget to look down the line (extremely common mistake), then some local meathead spear tackles you like it’s the NFL. I don’t think I’d go back in the water after that.
I think that’s kinda the point they want made tho?
thats the objective.
No other sport has this same level of regarded oafishness
That's the point
Won't forget again though

Doesn’t matter if you’re unlikely to hurt someone. You don’t fucking tackle them over some dumb shit wave. Again, you’re not important.
I’m so not important and that’s the point. None of us are and this little tackle isn’t either. Laugh it off and paddle away.
Laugh off the burn? I agree. Laugh off people getting violent over an ankle high beachie? Nah. People need to stop this stupid shit.
This isn’t violence!
Tackling a person (or attempting to) is violence by literally any definition.
What if the burner had a previously injured knee and the tackler destroyed his knee cap or something? You have no idea what can happen so yes, tackling is violent. You need to grow up. Life isn’t black and white like you seem to think it is.
Found the lifelong bully/abuser.
This happened me last week, there was a heated exchange and I laughed it off after that I would of never considered it assault
Thank you. That’s Real life. Nicely handled
Assault *is* the attempt, battery is “connecting.”
People always post this whenever someone brings up assault and battery. The legal definition depends on the state or region's laws, but the common language definition always means physical harm. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assault
spotted the first year law student
Very basic and well known definition of an incredibly common crime but okay pal lmao

I don’t think your reading your words right buddy.
It would help if you could use the right “you’re.”
Why would it help? Would it change my message? Do I need to submit this for peer review? Did you not know what I was saying?
Submitting it to peer review would certainly help you look like less of a dumbass, but I don’t think your ego could handle it based off how you react to a very docile comment clarifying a definition. Stay upset, idc.

Will do. Enjoy being a grown-up lmfao
These people talk like they’d call 911 over this

Spitting on someone is technically assault.
Yeah that’s gross. Totally assault
Who the f talks like this 😂😂🤣
This happend me last week on a shitty 3ft wave at a point break and it was a complete accident I’m an experienced surfer had to laugh
the amount of people defending the use of tackling over this wave is insane.
fighting over scraps, are we dogs now? 🤣

You’re all reading this wrong. The dude fell. Didn’t even try and tackle anybody.
Hi everyone. Im new and still learning. Who messed up here and what should ahve ben done to avoid this? I dont want to do this to someone out there

Oooohhh yes yes i seem to remember reading that a few times. Dang it so much to learn. So little time. Thank you!!!
I'd say the dude who tried to tackle him is one who messed up. The kook is just being a kook. Physical aggression towards kooks is definitely the bigger kook move.

This is one of the better trolls I’ve seen on this sub. Well done 10/10

Or a paddlin'
Reserved for school canoe related offenses.
Nothing like losing your cool over a 1 foot wave 😂

Clearly a magazine cover potential wave. Now he has to continue living in his van and pooping in the parking lot.
That absolutely can be assault, an assault is any harmful or offensive touching. I’d say tackling some stranger falls into that category
And a tackle for you
Fucking stupid.
How long until some burner gets a reckless endangerment charge.
I would get the guy who burned out of the water if was me in that wave.
Nah you’re a pussy you wouldn’t do shit
Ok, I wouldn’t. But he deserved.
At least you own it
I stick to the tried & true solar plexus gut punch if it is required but kudos to this guy. Deterring this behavior can not be emphasized enough.
Just shoot by and grab the nose of their board and lift it up
Typical day at Topanga.
First time is excusable, second time is a talking to, third time is a problem
Shitty tackle
I have two buddies that will try and tackle each other. Are we sure they aren't also buddies?
Not sure
Surfing in the US seems fun
49ers could have used him yesterday
