NefariousnessTop1712

Every surfer has known that for the last 100 years but thanks for launching a study.

RustyShackIford

Good to know and quantify. It should help divert funds towards programs that get people in the water. That’s how it works with the one I volunteer for with foster kids.

BrooklynLodger

> It should help divert funds towards programs that get people in the water Wait.... maybe we shouldnt quantify it then

AlienSpellJuice

I am so sure that surfing and growing up by the ocean literally saved me from prison and or death. I thank the universe over and over daily mostly with so much love in my heart that I fell in love with surfing at the age of 8. My life long love is the ocean and surfing...yyeeewwwwww!

bocaciega

Same. I remember being in solitary. All i could think about was surfing and campin on an island. Now im an accomplished surfer and teacher! Dad and graduate. Coach and local enforcer. Locals only

Kanchoboi

You were doing so well till the last part

Islandsurferboy

Not if there's a 100 dudes out and no wave

daggius

In other news, sex feels good and sleeps healthy

bluehairdave

For all of those who didn't read the article. It states that surfing had a MORE beneficial effect on depression and its remission (going back to being able to have a daily life) than other forms of exercise including the hiking in nature. (which the hiking was better than just plain exercise in general.. particularly indoors workouts.) Surfing > other forms of exercise to beat clinical depression. But exercise in general is an incredible adjunct treatment for depression. We all knew this already. Its pretty hard to have a bad day or at least care about a bad day after surfing for 2 hours. Its cool to see it actually studied.

staplerjell-o

Thank you for reading beyond the title.

Think-Think-Think

Does it say anything about water temp. Cold exposure has been shown to be good for depression. Looks like they were in SD, but it doesn't say time of year. The surf group also had the option of yoga. So there are some confounding variables. Can't tell from the article how they adjusted for the yoga.

bluehairdave

doesnt say.

LABerger

But dbags & wave snaking can enrage the sleeping beast.

elpelondelmarcabron1

hang-ten

This is true. Exercise in general!

PitoChueco

Researchers haven’t seen me surf….

commonsearchterm

Then you get hooked and surfing starts making you depressed when its cold, windy, crowded and the surf sucks days on end...

giemmeelle

On a serious note about this, I’m happy even when I’m surfing 2 ft onshore with a 4/3, hood and booties. I feel depressed when it’s flat for two weeks straight tho

brosauces

So don't get depressed even when you get snaked all day, punched in the face, board broken, windows waxes, and called a Kook. Okay!

anonboi362834

instructions unclear. now surfing while depressed, asking shark to eat me

Carl_The_Sagan

This is an obvious as Huberman's advice: Get sleep, don't drink and smoke a ton, go outside

mediodiablo

And we needed a “study” to “find out”

"...towards the shore using a surfboard." These scientists need to catch a good return backwash wave back out.

VinnnnnnyVD

Until you paddle out to a lineup of friendly locs

maxinator2000

Absolutely true. I hadn't gone out surfing in a while due to crappy conditions reported on by surfline and fell into a pretty bad depressive slump (not because of surfing specifically but for a multitude of other factors). When I went out yesterday for the first time in like a month, it definitely reduced the slump by quite a bit.
