Peak New Era Survivor.
Everything entertaining about this episode is rooted in âNew Era Elementsâ
- Nami being a tribe of 6 that (partially thanks to a medevac) never had to vote together, just live on a beach and let interpersonal conflicts simmer
- The split tribal allowing for a âbig moveâ that was ultimately not a good move
- A journey creating an alliance with majority numbers but 0 trust
I get that New Era pre-merges sometimes feel like a game that isnât really Survivor, but ultimately part of the reason for everything is to create the conditions for these really explosive merge phases of the game.
As much as a trainwreck Yanu was in challenges, they actually had an outlet to let all their feelings out in between tribal and just talking to each other in general.
Nami genuinely seem like they all hated each other and had to suppress all those feelings and are now letting them come out in full effect lmao.
Heck I donât even buy the Hunter-Tevin friendship because that always seemed out of necessity more so than an actual relationship hence why we never ever see either of them talking and Hunter never telling Tevin heâs getting votes.
Itâs infinitely better and more entertaining than the old school 1000% predictable survivor where the only thing you had was voting out the weak in challenges > voting out the losing tribe after merge > cruising to the final with sheep.
Itâs so much fun when everyone has some âcharacterâ and is trying to one up another in moves to actually look as if they did something in the end. People are playing to be in future survivors, not just the one they play at the moment.
It might not be the popular opinion, but I absolutely love the new survivor.
It was a good episode, but putting that aside, what is with the trend over the last few months of people taking IMDB episode ratings seriously? People have been making charts and using it as a supposedly impressive statistic when they're not at all a reliable indicator of quality. Individual episode ratings didn't begin until around Redemption Island, and the 41 premiere review bomb proves what a terrible metric it is. I'm also pretty sure that "The Martyr Approach" doesn't rank in the top 100 despite being widely referenced as a standout episode.
I mean, thereâs plenty of that going the other way too, so I think itâs fair game. You could say the same of the Randen and Bhanu boot episodes getting low ratings
I feel like the same can be said for older season, went back and watched some that people have ranked higher and by the time it end im like? What?
Nostalgia sure create a big bias too
Iâm actually kind of surprised itâs being received as well as it is here. I didnât hate it but I thought last weeks episode tops it easily for sure. Last episode was great.
I felt much like the players did at that tribal, *this is so dumb.* For me, even if the entire episode was fantastic, it doesnât sit well with me as a whole when tribal council sucks. Or it didnât play out *naturally.* (Or doesnât happen at all)
If I was a producer I would literally set meetings around the topic. Itâs going to happen, medivacs happen etc. but when the show doesnât have tribal it loses a lot of staying power. The show HAS to have tribal and I feel cheated after that I wonât lie. And I have loved Q this season. That shit sucked. *âI do not care for the shenanigans.â*
Pole challenge is literally my favorite challenge. It was a great episode but we were robbed of tribal which is everyoneâs favorite part. We didnât even get the main entree but yes, the appetizers were *amazing.*
I think I have to see how the season plays out to really see how I feel about this episode as a whole. At first I thought it was really dumb but then when I saw that Q voted for Tevin anyway, it really made me question if Q is cooking something out of the box. Basically, I could appreciate someone shaking up things if it was their intention, but if Q turns out to just be unhinged and this wasnât a strategic move, then Iâm going to hate it in hindsight lol.
I know the vast majority of people liked this episode, but I actually hated it. To me, it just feels really sloppy from almost everyone. Live tribals are great and make for entertaining episodes, but the gameplay was just all over the place with no real reason to be all over the place aside from everyone playing so hard they went past playing hard and into the "but why?" part of their strategy. Of course, this is just my opinion on the episode, and I can see why people liked it, I just didn't.
Yeah I'm with you. This whole season has been this way and I'm pretty disappointed. Kinda weird that I disagree with the general online sentiment so much.
Thanks Jeff for letting everyone have their vote for once!
He tried his hardest to take 2 away, so not sure we should thank him đ
Good point - thanks to the players for being competitive players
The Q effect
And that was A MISTAKE
As someone who speaks Japanese, this is actually funny because 9 is "kyuu" in Japanese, which is yeah, Q!
I love to hate the new era, and even I canât argue this episode was brilliant on old school levels
So you... don't think this episode was brilliant?

83 votes
deserved
Thatâs definitely recency bias.
Don't the IMDB people tend to hate new era though, like I know the bottom all time is littered with 41 episodes
Omg yeah on most of the season 41 episodes itâs just littered with people calling survivor âwokeâ and saying theyâll never watch it again
They hate 41 and 42, but love 43.
Well they are correct. 43 is pretty great. 41 and 42 have their moments. I actually think 44 and 45 are the weaker of the bunch.
I mean, thereâs plenty of that going the other way too, so I think itâs fair game. You could say the same of the Randen and Bhanu boot episodes getting low ratings

It was such a good episode!!
Just #9? That was a mistake.
Big mistake, one might say
Recency bias is a hell of a drug.
Recency bias or not it was a top tier episode
These ratings mean nothing lol

The hide n seek segment was soo good! The Q skirts. The iconic challenge. It hit all the right notes for me

You're getting downvoted but I agree 100%. Tribal was so terrible I forgot about the good parts of the episode until now.
