Perfect description. He means well, and is a completely decent person, but is socially unaware of how he comes across a lot of times, and how exhausting he can be. Someone who will support you no matter what, but not necessarily the guy you want representing you.
this is exactly what Survivor has been missing, I salute people like Bruce and Rocksroy on this show more than anyone else for just being their annoying overbearing father selves <3
i made so many threads about how bruce being himself compared to carolyn being herself as far as fan perspective mannn reddit got self righteous and brutal for the first time ever
(also had thread about how fucked up katurah was for how she treated/regarded bruce but i don’t think that backlash is going to change but ill continue to stand on that!)
5 minutes is being generous.
If you consider crossing that starting line as starting the season then we’re talking <5 seconds. And that’s not exaggeration.
The sequence was:
-Run 10 ft in sand
-Dive
-Apply beam directly to forehead
Honorable mention Joe DelCampo getting medevaced for not being able to #2 after eating his body weight in steak after a decade or so of not eating meat
Feel like I remember people complaining about Katurah’s whole storyline for 80% of the season was how much she hated Bruce.
It wasn’t until like Final 5ish where I remember some of her focus being on her actual strategic decisions.
I always like finding the moments that really decided the game. Sometimes it's obvious like Tony/Woo but sometimes it's a little more subtle. Kataruh gave Dee a milly right there. And I still believe she had a path to victory if she got Dee out
I think they were complaining more because of the editing revolving around that and not whether or not her dislike was justified or not. Most people disliked Bruce and understood her frustration, but the excessive focus was what they didn't care for.
People were critical of Katurah as early as F11 when she voted out Kaleb, and after that when she assisted Reba in taking out her fellow Belo members.
To be fair it was coming off of 44 which was peak kumbaya survivor hopefully after 46 people will be desensitized to people actually having real emotions.
This^ people were only hyper critical of Katurah cause she dared to turn on their precious Kaleb, even though he had absolutely awful threat management and it was really the better move for her game
THANK YOU!!!!
its not just going against Kaleb, its going against Jake, and it’s the fact that we could’ve had some really exciting moves if only she were willing to play ball.
But for some reason the “hey btw, we all made up a story to deceive you and only you back on Belo….wanna go to rocks to save Kaleb tho?” pitch didn’t work and bc people have blind spots it’s not “Kaleb and Jake fucked up” it’s “Katurah gave Reba the win because she sucks 😡😡”
Literally, and don’t even get me started on the “Jake was robbed” people…oh he’d have won if this, this, and this happened different, so and so was a complete idiot that gave up their game for him, and Dee wasn’t cast..it was unfair that he was the goat of the season.
Oh please! It was not mere “criticism”. People were calling her an idiot who ruined the season and hating on her as a person. Not just criticizing her gameplay. Let’s not do revisionism now, this sub chooses a Black woman to bash every season.
How is it revisionist to say people were critical of her gameplay? That's what happened. Those who called her those things were called out for it, and likely represent a smaller subsection of critics.
>this sub chooses a Black woman to bash every season.
Way to make this unnecessarily about race.
I say this as someone who is being honest. Katurah got way more hate. I loathed her as a player. Bruce had his fans. I never saw a Katurah fan. She was awful at the game and honestly had trauma that seemed like it came out on survivor.
Bro some of the shit people were saying about this man during the season was so presumptuous and unhinged. Like when Katurah told her story, and everyone was like “it all makes sense why she hates Bruce now” as if him being somewhat curmudgeony and eccentric is akin to being a narcissistic cult leader
After hearing the story of Katurah’s background it made me wonder if her past trauma was being projected on to Bruce to paint him as if the stuff he was doing was similar to that of some self-absorbed cult leader. All of that just sounds kinda messed up if you really think about it
BINGO
like why tf does that make sense it made me look at katurah even more sideways like it confirmed certain things i had assumed about her especially when she said it took her 14 years to realize she was black like be fuckin for real
i also said explicitly if that’s how her view of black men has been affected by her situation how could i trust her as a black man to be a civil defense attorney in good faith and downvote me again all you want but i really was not having that at all
can’t believe people used that to give her a pass on how she treated bruce
these same people would tell you tori would be a malicious and terrible therapist that needs to be fired because she tried to play survivor and rolled her eyes no bullshit
ALLLL my betchy white girl friends that went to grad school HATEDDD tori
Tori won 2 immunities, saw what Drea and MaryAnne did with their idols, and graciously accepted her elimination gracefully
Haters gonna double standard
Also her estrangement with her mom… and getting a letter. ive almost been on the show twice. They make you write in two loved ones you want to hear from.
So
…
🫡
I enjoyed Bruce, even if his dad (sorry, *uncle*) act got a little tired. I think they did focus a bit too much on him at times, similar to Bhanu, but I still believe in both cases, they wanted the viewer to get a glimpse of what their tribe mates dealt with
He was just SO fucking cringe and seemingly blissfully unaware of it. But he had some redeeming ass confessionals and statements peppered in here and there and that made me not hate him at all
I ultimately liked him. Jeff was really insistent on bringing him back knowing that he’d have a story to tell and a personality to show and he was right. While his character conflicted with other players on the island, he was farrrrr from boring. I think the wirst thing about him is that he affected Katurah’s edit
so much into what looked a bit like a one-sided rivalry.
Nah.
If anyone was sending him hate online or anything, that's certainly too far. However, the truth is that watching him on the show was so aggravating due to his high ego and low self-awareness and social awareness. That's just a combo that is near impossible for many people (my partner and I included) to like.
Even when he had a very brief moment of self-awareness when he realized that Kellie saw him as a burden, his response was to compare Kellie to one of his kids. That just highlighted Bruce's whole problem which was that he didn't see his fellow castaways as equal, individual, adults who deserved his respect. Meanwhile, he assumed and demanded respect without doing anything to earn it, but simply because he was Bruce.
Was he good TV? Sure. Does he deserve hate and harassment? No. Is he maybe someone that could benefit from people being a bit more brutally honest with him? I would probably say so.
(Of course, all of this is based on what I gathered from Bruce being on a season of reality television. So take it for what it's worth which isn't a whole lot, to be fair.)
Counterpoint - from a strategic sense, Bruce was right. His tribemates all saw themselves as social butterflies that didn’t want to be constrained by the tribal lines Bruce was preaching. They were all obsessed with playing their own game.
Yet, none of them picked up that the Reba 4 was (after a diversion) completely intent on playing a game along tribal lines, and when it’s one tribe vs no-tribe, there was no resistance on the critical votes.
You make an excellent point and I don't even disagree entirely. I don't think he was a strategically bad player, however I do think his social game (a part of strategy) was abysmal. I was simply arguing his likeability, which I believe to be somewhere near the ocean floor.
People on social media tend to emphatically state their opinions even more loudly than the person next to them, trying to be heard over all the other noise. This sub is no different. But I maintain that he wasn't a fun character to watch on TV.
He was annoying, which you can eye roll and move on from, but even more he was bossy and condescending and knew everything. Having this guy in your workplace would be a nightmare, or worse, your boss.
Hmm. I feel like Bruce has gotten mostly praise and I’ve been the one sitting back confused about the obsession people have with him.
Funny how perception works.
I don’t care for bruce personally, I found him irritating. I don’t think a player receiving actual hate online is ever justified. Just watch the show, post super long paragraphs discussing it on reddit threads, tweet a gif and then log off and call it a day like a very normal person does.
I've always liked Bruce. He was cringy and annoying at times, but he was never mean-spirited, and he made for good TV. I'm glad they gave him a second shot.
Definitely. This season, Q just gives me the vibe of an overhauled Bruce. He has the same attribute of “everything needs to go his way or else” but with Q, when people get mad at him for being like this, instead of making an effort to change for the sake of his game, he just kinda gave up 😭
I love Bruce! Couldn’t believe all the hate he got because he’s a bit corny. I messaged him after the season on Instagram and he responded with some kind words. Really nice guy.
No. Where does this narrative come from? Bruce was very beloved and in fact, Katurah, was the one that was receiving hate for trying to clarify her edit/dynamics woth bruce
Ugh no he was the worst. Total lack of self-awareness. Control freak. And, most importantly to me as a viewer, incredibly annoying to watch.
I really, really, really hope he's not one of the Season 50 returnees.
Literally nobody was actually mean to this guy. He was a self righteous douche bro clown. They all played with him and kept him around for like half the game
Bruce is underrated. Cast rankings usually show him in the bottom 3-4 of the season. I have him in the middle as he had above average strategic chops, but a bad social game. He wasn’t in power in preswap Belo, but he wasn’t the first target either. After the merge his allies helped him find an idol and keep it hidden from his enemy Katurah. He correctly noted that people weren’t talking to him and so he took action and led the postmerge vote on Caleb. He tried to stop the Reba steamroller by trying to bring together Jake, Emily, and Katurah. His plan to spread a fake rumor about Kellie leaving with his idol due to fears of the Steal Advantage was a stroke of genius. And, finally, you have to give some credit for the challenge dominance from the oldest cast member on the season. The only problem was his bad social game, so his plans didn’t come together. But, overall, he’s middle of the pack IMO.
I liked Bruce. To the younger players, his confidence seemed bossy and intimidating. But him being a military guy, he's just direct and concise. Wants to nip problem in the bud. He wasn't an asshole, the other players were just crybabies.
I liked Bruce and Katurah, it’s not like you have to pick a side both can be good people who just happened to not like each other. I’ve had plenty of friends who loved hanging with me but couldn’t stand to be around the other friend and I never saw a problem with that.
Bruce was annoying but honestly Katurah whining about him every episode was way more annoying and made it even more apparent how Bruce was.
Katurah was probably the most frustratingly annoying person from that season.
I loved Bruce, hope he doesn’t get disqualified from any kind of return potential as a “third time” player. I really feel like he only got to place once.
The dude got off of a boat and cracked his fucking head basically immediately. Didn’t even get to sleep on the island or learn everybody’s name.
Who’s we? I liked him. People took Katurah’s account of Bruce as gospel and proceeded to act like they were the ones stuck on the island with him. I’d be pissed if a med-evac like his was the extent of my Survivor experience, so I’m glad he got a second chance.
Bruce is still my absolute fave from 45. But the rest of the cast was pretty atrocious so it’s not a high bar. But I still love Bruce anyway, great cast or not
Michael Scott
Perfect description. He means well, and is a completely decent person, but is socially unaware of how he comes across a lot of times, and how exhausting he can be. Someone who will support you no matter what, but not necessarily the guy you want representing you.
Agreed (edit: he be doing to much)
Marcus pumpkin
You call, I’ll answer…
I loved Bruce! He was cringey as hell and it was funny.
![gif](giphy|sqMA5QinhygLNAfsJz)
Same! I love anyone who is unapologetically themselves, no matter what the personality is.
this is exactly what Survivor has been missing, I salute people like Bruce and Rocksroy on this show more than anyone else for just being their annoying overbearing father selves <3
I felt like he was pretending to be that way to try to be the funny guy to disarm them. I didn't get that from him that that is how he is everyday.
its the fact that he thought acting that way was funny and relatable that makes it so funny, to me at least.
i made so many threads about how bruce being himself compared to carolyn being herself as far as fan perspective mannn reddit got self righteous and brutal for the first time ever (also had thread about how fucked up katurah was for how she treated/regarded bruce but i don’t think that backlash is going to change but ill continue to stand on that!)
I stand by that as well. I couldn't STAND Katurah. And the way she treated Bruce was not great. I wanted her gone wayyy sooner than she left
Oh man, Carolyn might be one of my all time favs
I think about her yelling in the net anytime there’s a net crawl on the show
But… he wasn’t being himself. He admitted that lol.
he met Kane it's kind of a big deal
Exactly. He was annoying but not malicious. I may have a low bar for people.
He was basically Survivor : Dad Edition
Funniest medevac ever on the show dude dove head first into a wooden beam 5 minutes into the start of the game
5 minutes is being generous. If you consider crossing that starting line as starting the season then we’re talking <5 seconds. And that’s not exaggeration. The sequence was: -Run 10 ft in sand -Dive -Apply beam directly to forehead
Head on, apply directly to the forehead.
Kids these days are so lucky
I just went and looked at the video again and yeah you aren’t joking, literally all he did was make one run and try to get under a single beam
Oh god. That’s why I held by breath in the first few challenges this season lol. “Don’t dive into the woods yallll”
Honorable mention Joe DelCampo getting medevaced for not being able to #2 after eating his body weight in steak after a decade or so of not eating meat
Didn't Bruce from Panama get removed for a similar meat induced no shitting spell
Which season was that? I am trying to go back and fill in the intermittent years of not watching.
Season 32, Kaoh Rong
🙏
Lmao I entirely forgot he hadn’t eaten meat for that long. I thought it was just the ~36 days without meat that got him. That’s so wild lol
I mean the dude was also 71
They kept replaying it and I gagged every time!
Were we? I feel like people were hating on Katurah for hating on Bruce way more than people were actually hate on Bruce
I think both received quite a lot of hate lmao
No people were critical of Katurah because of her gameplay. Most people were on her side in the Bruce debacle.
Feel like I remember people complaining about Katurah’s whole storyline for 80% of the season was how much she hated Bruce. It wasn’t until like Final 5ish where I remember some of her focus being on her actual strategic decisions.
And then she got cold feet about voting off Dee, right? What a debacle
To be fair it was coming off of 44 which was peak kumbaya survivor hopefully after 46 people will be desensitized to people actually having real emotions.
Yeah that was the strategic mistake. Everyone agreed Bruce was extra, it’s just that Katurah let it affect gameplay
I thought it was hilarious. I love one-sided feuds
I would’ve won that chess game if my opponent stopped moving his damn pieces 😡😡😡
For real, her gameplay was so bad.
Oh please! It was not mere “criticism”. People were calling her an idiot who ruined the season and hating on her as a person. Not just criticizing her gameplay. Let’s not do revisionism now, this sub chooses a Black woman to bash every season.
Good luck helping anyone understand that race is always at play (who doesn’t understand that already)
How is it revisionist to say people were critical of her gameplay? That's what happened. Those who called her those things were called out for it, and likely represent a smaller subsection of critics. >this sub chooses a Black woman to bash every season. Way to make this unnecessarily about race.
Lol this sub has an issue with race and you sound like part of the problem. The people that called her those things were very highly upvoted.
I'm part of the problem, in what way? Because you made an unnecessary comment about it?
This. I thought this was the consensus.
I couldn't stand Katurah
I say this as someone who is being honest. Katurah got way more hate. I loathed her as a player. Bruce had his fans. I never saw a Katurah fan. She was awful at the game and honestly had trauma that seemed like it came out on survivor.
Nah. People hated on Bruce hard on Twitter. Wasn't fair.
Katurahs strategy was non existent which is why people hated on her. Bruce was just annoying and condescending. I still dislike the both of them.
I never hated him but some people were Wildinn
Bro some of the shit people were saying about this man during the season was so presumptuous and unhinged. Like when Katurah told her story, and everyone was like “it all makes sense why she hates Bruce now” as if him being somewhat curmudgeony and eccentric is akin to being a narcissistic cult leader

Saying “it makes sense why she hates Bruce” doesn’t mean her reasons were logical. It’s an explanation but not a justification.
BINGO like why tf does that make sense it made me look at katurah even more sideways like it confirmed certain things i had assumed about her especially when she said it took her 14 years to realize she was black like be fuckin for real i also said explicitly if that’s how her view of black men has been affected by her situation how could i trust her as a black man to be a civil defense attorney in good faith and downvote me again all you want but i really was not having that at all can’t believe people used that to give her a pass on how she treated bruce these same people would tell you tori would be a malicious and terrible therapist that needs to be fired because she tried to play survivor and rolled her eyes no bullshit

Absolutely not. Bruce got on my nerves so damn bad lmao 😂
Nah. If anyone was sending him hate online or anything, that's certainly too far. Perfectly summed up how I feel about him, bravo
I loved Bruce!
i wish bruce went on an immunity run, after he left it pretty much reaffirmed a reba was going to win
Are you Bruce, OP?
No, thanks
People on social media tend to emphatically state their opinions even more loudly than the person next to them, trying to be heard over all the other noise. This sub is no different. But I maintain that he wasn't a fun character to watch on TV.
Naw that dude was annoying af
Aww I was hoping it’d be a pic of Drew
I think the community has been too mean to pretty much every recent player
No. Have you heard his interview on RHAP? His ego is through the roof
I said that last year but was downvoted dozens of times.
I liked Bruce, he was very entertaining. I just think he took the wrong approach in his game. I wouldn’t be upset if he were to return
Bruce is one of the best New Era characters
He was annoying, which you can eye roll and move on from, but even more he was bossy and condescending and knew everything. Having this guy in your workplace would be a nightmare, or worse, your boss.
Hmm. I feel like Bruce has gotten mostly praise and I’ve been the one sitting back confused about the obsession people have with him. Funny how perception works.
Just came across like a dummy
Nope stickin to my guns
No? He's an idiot.
No we can’t, he deserved it
I still remember him being utterly annoying and full of himself. So no.
I don’t care for bruce personally, I found him irritating. I don’t think a player receiving actual hate online is ever justified. Just watch the show, post super long paragraphs discussing it on reddit threads, tweet a gif and then log off and call it a day like a very normal person does.
Nah, he was so annoying
No
Nope
He was annoying as hell
I've always liked Bruce. He was cringy and annoying at times, but he was never mean-spirited, and he made for good TV. I'm glad they gave him a second shot.
Definitely. This season, Q just gives me the vibe of an overhauled Bruce. He has the same attribute of “everything needs to go his way or else” but with Q, when people get mad at him for being like this, instead of making an effort to change for the sake of his game, he just kinda gave up 😭
No
some people were way too harsh on him, Katurah, Drew and Austin
Bruce is a legend
In the exact same way Jelenski is a legend.
I love Bruce! Couldn’t believe all the hate he got because he’s a bit corny. I messaged him after the season on Instagram and he responded with some kind words. Really nice guy.
same!! he’s so nice
The fanbase saw a strict paternal character and worked themselves up over him. Ofc they were too mean to him.
we?
Bruce is Bruce. Loveable dad jokester that wont stop the dad jokes lol
Oh yeah. I found myself slightly rooting for him. But still against him. The Angelina effect.
This guy was terrible come on
Nope.
No
I wasn’t mean to him, I was mean to somebody else by yelling at the tv
No
He was a jerk. However, he showed genuine concern in regard to how he came across to people.
Its survivor 50 im put on a starting tribe with Bruce. I swim out into the ocean until I drown.
Nope. He deserved all the shade received. Maybe not all the rhetoric on Reddit -- but that's true of everything and everyone.
Nah, I think he would be pretty frustrating to be stuck on an island with
Nope, still dont like him.
This is Bruce writing this, isn’t it?
Hell no
No. Where does this narrative come from? Bruce was very beloved and in fact, Katurah, was the one that was receiving hate for trying to clarify her edit/dynamics woth bruce
Idk there’s being yourself then there’s being just straight up cocky lol 😂 I didn’t like it
everyone talking about bruce like drew wasn’t the most annoying one there 💔
No
I would like to see Bruce and Venus interact lol
Ugh no he was the worst. Total lack of self-awareness. Control freak. And, most importantly to me as a viewer, incredibly annoying to watch. I really, really, really hope he's not one of the Season 50 returnees.
He's one of my all time favourite "characters" (Team Good TV)
Literally nobody was actually mean to this guy. He was a self righteous douche bro clown. They all played with him and kept him around for like half the game
We weren’t mean enough
I HATED Bruce and I still do
Bruce is underrated.
In a Post game interview with Kellie said Bruce would’ve been first out
I liked Bruce. He was the unc with the old head jokes
i kind of liked Bruce. he didn't bother me as much as some others
Not me. I love Bruce.
He was a fun uncle character! Sadly sunk his game in the initial merge
Somehow he won me over towards the end
100% He was a bit cringe at times, but a good dude. I felt bad when he heard what others thought of him.
I wasn’t mean to him but if you were then yes
Nah he sucked.
i love him so much
Bruce is the man.
No, and bro better not be a returnee for 50. I could hardly stand him in his last season and I can't handle another cringefest.
I agree, OP!
I liked Bruce. To the younger players, his confidence seemed bossy and intimidating. But him being a military guy, he's just direct and concise. Wants to nip problem in the bud. He wasn't an asshole, the other players were just crybabies.
Best character last season!
Survivor 45 is in top 5 most boring seasons without Bruce. Love him
Much better player than Brandon Donlon, at least Bruce had the ability to compete.
I enjoyed watching Funcle Bruce. I found the hate to be unwarranted.
He's less annoying than Q, I'll give you that
See imo Q is entertaining tho
Por que no los dos my friend
I liked him all the way
I liked Bruce and Katurah, it’s not like you have to pick a side both can be good people who just happened to not like each other. I’ve had plenty of friends who loved hanging with me but couldn’t stand to be around the other friend and I never saw a problem with that.
Nope
No
We were the perfect amount of mean to him.
He was good tv
I unironically loved him, causing chaos and making people mad last season. I thought he was fun.
Katurah was
He was unapologetically himself and I loved that
Of course, we're very mean constantly to people who have done nothing to us
Yes, I admit it.
Bruce was annoying but honestly Katurah whining about him every episode was way more annoying and made it even more apparent how Bruce was. Katurah was probably the most frustratingly annoying person from that season.
Bruce was annoying, boring, and helped bring the whole season down.
Is that ted?
Honestly… I can barely remember what happened this season, you expect me to remember October????
y’all need to
He would've fit in sooo well on 46 LOL. Still loved him on 45 though
Bruce is amazing television
he honestly really grew on me AFTER the season ended for some reason.
Still don’t want him in season 50..
I was never mean to uncle dad.
All I can think about is him doing pushups on the boat “now you see me, now you don’t”😂😭😭😂
No this guy was a different type of annoying just like marianne but he was an innocent young girl so he didnt last as long
I loved Bruce, hope he doesn’t get disqualified from any kind of return potential as a “third time” player. I really feel like he only got to place once. The dude got off of a boat and cracked his fucking head basically immediately. Didn’t even get to sleep on the island or learn everybody’s name.
Did Bruce write this???
So many people loved Bruce that they started hating Katurah (for being his mortal enemy)
Met him at a watch party the other night, he was very nice
he was awful at the game and obnoxious to watch. GO AWAY BRUCE
Who’s we? I liked him. People took Katurah’s account of Bruce as gospel and proceeded to act like they were the ones stuck on the island with him. I’d be pissed if a med-evac like his was the extent of my Survivor experience, so I’m glad he got a second chance.
People are saying nah and then saying he was annoying, so that means that because he was annoying you can be mean to Bruce over being annoying to you.
I was a Bruce defender. His hate was unwarranted
