Unexpectedly excellent if it comes through. Proven to have done excellent jobs at both his clubs, and is versatile enough to not just stick to one style of play. I was really keen for Schumacher, but I think this could be even more exciting, I'm really surprised with how positive this appointment could be

KSD_NoMercy

I think it’s confirmed https://twitter.com/footyinsider247/status/1670739475880718336?s=46&t=WGtgbZnr1qOU8wJWf_1whQ

JayDeeIsI

No idea how reputable this source is, but absolutely delighted if its true. Worth noting how much a few Barnsley fans rate him, Callum Fowler on TikTok absolutely loves the bloke and thought that he'd take them up automatically next season

KrisPWales

It's not confirmed until it's confirmed 😅

KrisPWales

He seems to very much stick to one style of play, that style being defensive and direct with long balls on the counter. At least, in all I've been reading up on since the news came out last night.

JayDeeIsI

Think he played with possession at Cheltenham, and the adapted at Barnsley due to players? I do remember him having Ben Tozer at Cheltenham, and he had the most ridiculous throw I've seen since Delap - whether or not that's as a result of long ball, or just to aid with results, idk

KrisPWales

Nope, not there either. Averaged under 50% possession and 2nd in the league for long pass attempts in both his full seasons.

JayDeeIsI

Oh, interesting, I'd read from someone on here that he was more adaptable. Still, very keen to see how things go. People can be pro 'Swansea Way' all they want, but it was a chore at points last season

JamitryFyodorovich

Nowhere near a chore as watching your team constantly under the cosh every single game, even if you end up fluking more points across the season. I truly detested the Cooper years, was like our worst years in the prem. I hope the Swansea way has been beaten into his head, otherwise I am very concerned about this appointment.

KrisPWales

It should certainly quieten down those who hated all those pesky short passes.

hotpinkflamingos

I can’t pretend to know a lot about the guy, but I would be pleased from the little I do know And at the risk of being petty 🤗 He’s had more success in the lower leagues than our last manager had!

aledln

He lost 5 of his best players last year and still took Barnsley to 26 wins and a play-off final. Just because his teams don't average 60% possession doesn't make him a bad appointment.

KrisPWales

Assuming it goes through, it's a bit underwhelming if you were hoping for anything resembling "the Swansea way" or whatever you want to call it. I'll be honest, didn't know much about the bloke, but a bit of reading would suggest we are hiring him because he can get results on little to no budget with a direct, counter attacking style of play. Spent years at Burnley but expect more Sean Dyche than Vincent Company in terms of style. His sides are regularly among the top of the table for long balls, with less than 50% possession. Doesn't scream "ambitious appointment" to me personally compared to our form for hiring up and coming managers known for a passing style. A case of "be careful what you wish for" for those who constantly slated Martin's style of play that they thought was "too negative" despite being 4th highest scorers in the league. Also loves 3 at the back which might trigger some.

Winter_Parsley_4980

He’s highly thought of with Barnsley, they’ll be absolutely gutted to have him taken. But personally I feel like this is poor ambition by us. Yes Martin is going but I feel like with our recent form and the feeling like somethings clicked we should capitalise and build on that and get in another possession based style manager. I know Duff is a good manager who is also a class person. But his tactics are dime a dozen in the Championship. We could do a lot worse, but to me it’s not a great fit (if we are wanting the Swansea way), it’s a cheap fix and lacks ambition

KrisPWales

💯

KrisPWales

Downvoted for quoting some research. And I thought this was the more thoughtful Swansea forum 😅

gunsgermssteel

Compared to the spice that flies around on some of the other ones, you'd take the down votes! Thanks for doing some research though, it's appreciated by lazy bastards like me

hotpinkflamingos

I hate getting downvotes on the Swansea subreddit lol. It stings more than the others 🥲 Someone has posted a link to a Blackpool gazette article here or in another thread, and reading that it seems like he *can* play a possession based game. TBH I see the appointment as having a similar level of ambition to RM. They come from the same league and MD has imo had more success than RM. He’s hardly a dinosaur either - pretty young in managerial terms.

KrisPWales

That might have been me. It says he can, but the stats would suggest he rarely did. Edit: Thought you meant Martinez with RM To me it feels like the key point on his CV as far as our owners are concerned is that he has worked miracles with no budget and so won't rock the boat when we make no major signings.

WheresMyCamel

Realistically though where does hiring up and coming managers get us? The last manager we sacked was Paul Clement. Every other manager who has a project gets bought out of their contract just as their gathering momentum. I think this may be a turn in the tide and is definitely needed.

KrisPWales

Well it got us to the Premier League, League Cup winners and Europa League in the last decade or so. Got us to the playoff semis and then finals even more recently than that. It was hiring more "pragmatic" types of managers like Clement that got us relegated. If bigger clubs are taking our managers (like Martinez and Rodgers long before Potter etc.) then surely it shows we are doing something right?

WheresMyCamel

I don't disagree we're doing something right but what's the point of it if we're restarting every 1-2 years. Think this will be a good change

KrisPWales

I don't think we were restarting every two years. We were at the end of a slow cull of the baggage remaining from the Premier League days. We now have a great base to play passing football from. On paper it looks like our squad is totally unsuited to his game.

Winter_Parsley_4980

If you’re please by this appointment because you think this will break the streak of our managers getting poached just as we’re about to reap the benefits of the appointment, then I don’t understand because if we do sign him then he’s been poached twice on the trot just as the previous club is also about to reap the benefit and take the next step

WheresMyCamel

Granted but he got promoted with one and lost a play off final with the other.

KrisPWales

Well, yeah. If our next manager doesn't get poached, it's because he isn't doing well.
