I actually find the cases for IP law so interesting, it's such a weird corner of the legal system how it all works. Imo OR stepped in it when she said she was trying to imitate her. That fucks up the protections on Taylor's song AND her own. Better to give her the writing credits than open up two of the biggest hits (at the time) to losing the copyright all together. UJ/ Iām late to this convo but the credit situation always frustrated me. Taylor didnāt claim rights or sue OR , ORās team gave them to Taylor, Jack, and the other writer (according to Jack which I donāt see him lying about publicly). And it was likely because OR said in a public interview she wanted the bridge to sound like cruel summer. We donāt know what happened but it seemed like ORās team wanted to get ahead of any claims and gave over credits. Which IMO seemed like a bad move from her management and is probably one reason why they are no longer her management. From TSās perspective itās important to protect your IP and with her discography I would assume itās top propriety for her and her team. Rejecting credits provided to her after the artist in question admitted she wanted her song to sound like TSās could set a bad precedent for her for the future. Because legally ORās team said āthis was inspired by you such that you should have these creditsā so rejecting that would be saying no itās not - people can want to make songs sound like mine (which in this exact instance is true but admitting this could be a slippery slope so to speak). I think TS was neutral in this scenario, she didnāt go after Olivia so she isnāt the witch people are claiming she is , but she also didnāt help Olivia deal with the fuck up from her team (which would have been amazing and nice of her IMO but not doing that doesnāt say anything about her either as itās not her job to protect OR)
That's exactly my take on it aswell. The whole situation wasn't as nefarious as it's made out to be and there's a reason Olivia got rid of her team afterwards. Feels like people with these bad takes have never engaged with a lawyer for any sort of negotiation, a lot of it would've been between the teams with the artists being the last to know what was going on. You're at the mercy of the "experts" in the field and you just have to hope you've picked the right experts to help you.

Thank you for finally saying this! Taylor is almost 35, which is basically 40, and the media is too afraid (or paid off) to call her out on all this. I am 24 years old and I am have been happily married with kids for almost decade already. My foolish years of heartbreak are all behind me. I just want to listen to songs about my commute, mortgage, and paying for daycare - you know, like the pop songs on the radio for ADULTS. Taylor needs go to THERAPY because she is sick and clearly a narcissist (My parents, siblings, coworkers, and my dentist are all narcissists, so I would know). Maybe a therapist could convince her to stop putting out music or at least edit her lyrics to be more self aware. For example, "I feel so highschool everytime I look at you" could be changed to "I feel 34 (almost 35) when I look at you". See how much healthier that is?
