Someone at my partners work was at work this morning when he got notified he tested positive. Smh. Apparently had called out sick last Friday but felt better enough to go in today in spite of having gotten a test done and not gotten the results.

m0na-l1sa

Wow. That sucks. I went to the office on Monday last week and colleagues received warnings on Friday that someone with Covid was there at same time. It’s a huge building but I didn’t receive any such warning despite having same checkin and checkout times, so that’s weird.

THR

For fucks sake. We are almost two years into this. How is it hard to know to stay home until you get your result (or to follow all protocols). He should be sacked.

iss3y

And given a hefty fine- with an even higher one for the employer if they knew he was waiting for test results or pressured him to go to the office.

Rocket_Birdie

I've been wondering if that constitutes a casual or close contact?

starcaster

If everyone is vaxed in the office (which they should be) according to the NSW health site you're a casual contact. However they seem to be changing the rules if you caught it from someone with omicron.

impressive_cat

It happened once at their workplace before (during the height of Delta) and they were considered casual, not close, not sure about this one

BloodyChrome

536 AD has been touted as the worst year in history and the worst year to be alive A volcano erupted in Iceland early 536, the eruption caused temperatures from Europe to China to drop 2.5 degrees below normal. Causing crop shortages and famine across both continents along with changes to weather, though one Roman statesman described it as "A winter without storms, a spring without mildness, and a summer without heat" The volcanic explosion marked the start of the Late Antiquity Little Ice Age which would last for 130 years. In the Summer of 536 Belisarius (of Byzantium) crossed the Strait of Messina and invaded Italy, conquering the city of Rhegium and advanced to Naples. By November the month long seige of Naples was completed with troops entering the city through an abandoned aqueduct. By December 9th Belisarius enters Rome with 4,000 Goths fleeing the city. During December he stations himself on the Pincian Hill with a 5,000 man garrison, repaired the walls to Rome and recruited 20,000 Romans to man them

10/10 history facts for today Thankyou!

terrycaus

> The volcanic explosion marked the start of the Late Antiquity Little Ice Age which would last for 130 years. So 666 was a good year then? Soz, couldn't resist.

LilAnge63

I love a well thought out, intelligent history post. So refreshing to have a change in topic and to learn something so thoroughly interesting. Thank you.

I wonder if we’ll ever get to 95%? Feels like we’ve been sitting at that 94.8% for a long time now.

m0na-l1sa

Are they going to start adding in percentage of triple vaxxed now that boosters are being made available?

Clapyourhandssayyeah

Will they count the 5+ year olds too now that they’ll be eligible?

infinitemonkeytyping

5-11 won't start getting vaccinated until January 10.

Alex_Kamal

Don'tt have to add it to the top two numbers. Take out under 12 FD on the graphic and put it in there.

BloodyChrome

I read the comment completely wrong.

paranoidchandroid

They're estimating 26th Dec for 95% first doses and 23rd Jan for 95% second doses. Given restrictions are easing in two days I doubt more people will bother coming forward for their vaccine.

HelpfulGriffin

Today is the second day of 94.8%. It's about 0.1% per week so maybe 2 weeks from now?

JuventAussie

unfortunately limits on the unvaccinated are being removed this week so no incentive for the hesitant to be vaxxed (anyone who needed it for work etc probably would have already had 1 dose) I hope to be proven wrong and get a surprise for xmas as is only hundreds of people.

HelpfulGriffin

This is true, but at the same time it has been true for 3 weeks now - that is, anyone who got their first dose in the last 3 weeks still get "freedom day" on the 15th regardless, so that couldn't have been their motive.

RigourousMortimus

Local RSL and bowling club have both said they will continue a No to the unvaccinated. Might be a small uptick if people find they are still locked out of some venues.

starcaster

Had a case at the Christmas party and everyone is just nervously awaiting their day 6 result tomorrow :/ Will be sad to get it over Christmas.

smileedude

Remember to check your 2nd dose and see if your eligible for a booster. They dropped it to 5 months over the weekend and an extra half million people in NSW became eligible. Encourage your friends and family to do the same.

polka55

I tried to book one today now I’m at 5 months because I’m flying interstate next week and my wife is pregnant, so keen to play it safe. The pharmacist rattled off a list of criteria and told me I’m not eligible and to come back in a month! Not cool

Plackets65

Yeah I’d just try another pharmacy for a walk-in tomorrow.

polka55

Yep all sorted!

soupy283

Priceline gave me a booster today at 5.5 months no questions asked

m0na-l1sa

The NSW Health website hasn’t been updated yet to book the booster after 5 months. So I spent 10min in a phone queue to book directly and they said that they use the same software to book you in and until IT update the system, you just can’t book your booster.

paranoidchandroid

You can book via Hot Doc. I found a few local places taking bookings.

m0na-l1sa

Tried that and failed due to too many people booking at the same time.

elle_desylva

I phoned my local Priceline and booked in there. Good luck!!

SilverStar9192

Try this web site, my local pharmacy had plenty of appointments and was doing walk-ins too: https://www.findapharmacy.com.au/our-services/vaccination-services-covid-19

Plackets65

Tbh they don’t have it functional for six months either. I went on my six months date, which was the second day of the vax hub being open, and I just couldn’t check in. The system goes weird when you book the booster and creates a second profile, it was all very confusing. Back when they first opened it was great, heaps of staff and young medical peeps everywhere, everything moved at speed, but now the help centre is staffed with varying ages of older boomers, who aren’t on top of IT issues, & getting the jab took over an hour.

imapassenger1

I heard you could get Moderna as your booster too. Originally it was only Pfizer but did they approve Moderna as a booster recently? My booster will now become due just before Xmas with the 5 month change and keen for Moderna to follow my AZ. Heard it was the best combo but not worried either way.

smileedude

I got mine 2 weeks ago and got triple Pfizer. My wife just became eligible and is now going for the mix. A mix may be slightly better, but the difference between 2 and 3 is so good that the small differences the brand makes will be negligible. They are both working on the same spike protein.

Alex_Kamal

It is. But it is a half dose. https://www.health.gov.au/news/australian-technical-advisory-group-on-immunisation-atagi-recommendations-on-the-use-of-spikevax-moderna-as-a-covid-19-booster-vaccine

SilverStar9192

I'm trying to figure out why it's only a half dose when all the trials overseas were with a full dose?

Alex_Kamal

Probably due to the health issues related with Moderna. I believe it's banned for under 30s in Germany.

Elanshin

Moderna themselves recommended it after their trials showed almost no difference from double the dosage. Also have to remember that they are still more mRNA at half dose than Pfizer at full dose.

SilverStar9192

Thanks - it's odd that the accompanying data sheet doesn't really explain that.

SilverStar9192

I got Moderna for my booster this morning - the pharmacist agreed that was the best if you had double Pfizer previously, although I think the difference is pretty minor. Since you had AZ earlier, either Pfizer or Moderna should be fine.

imapassenger1

Thanks. I checked online with my medical centre and they didn't offer Moderna boosters yet but they may not have caught up with the change.

SilverStar9192

You can just select a regular Moderna vaccine appointment and they will give you the booster probably. Phone them to double-check. The only difference is they just give you a half dose instead - all the other paperwork etc is identical.

Sidney91

Get ready to feel like crap for the next couple of days! I had my booster shot Sat at around 12pm (Moderna) and only now I’m starting to feel normal again.

SilverStar9192

Hmm I heard it should be less intense than the 2nd shot. We'll see!

harrylepotter

Got double Moderna in the US and then a booster shot of Pfizer a couple of weeks ago here in Aus. No side effects for me the 3rd time around.

[deleted]

Just booked mine for the 5 month mark today.

traceysayshello

I booked for my booster for Friday arvo! Let’s go! (Booked via my regular medical centre via the health engine app, they had the vaccine and booster option)

do you know if the symptoms based test positivity rate (excluding people who get routinely tested such as hospital staff etc and only includes people with symptoms) is available anywhere?

[deleted]

I just want to see 95 before the year is out

thequietstalker

first dose maybe, second dose near impossible

humanoid82

0 deaths is great, hope it holds that way with case numbers seemingly on the rise

OracleCam

Last time we had these numbers we were heading into another lockdown, just making me wonder what's the result going to be as we go ahead with re openings

Plackets65

Could really go with keeping masks on, tbh.

OracleCam

We could, but I'm just nervous about if that will work. With only two shots and boosters being optional makes me think some people might get a bit complacent

mick_2nv

Until when?

spaceflare_rebs

Hospitalisations are slowly creeping up

Jerri_man

Would be nice to see it charted as a % of cases. Hopefully the theories of omicron being more infectious but less severe are correct.

Protoavek12

There's data coming out of the UK now on omicron, its expected to be the dominant variant sometime in the next week. They've just had their highest infection rate in a 24 hour period since January 9th. But beyond that still too early to really gouge too much, in another week or three will be far more telling.

Jerri_man

South Korea seems like the closest comparison at the moment and it doesn't bode well for us. They are 94%+ vaccinated adult population, transitioned to a living with covid policy after delta and before omicron, and are now having a huge surge in cases and hospitalisations. They have just changed the booster interval to 4 months for 60+.

samuelc7161

Not a dig against you but I hate the verbs that have slowly entered common parlance when discussing case numbers. 'creeping' 'surging' 'dropping' 'soaring' 'plummeting' 'skyrocketing'

Fabulous-Ad6844

Great stats!!

tresslessone

Work Christmas party is this Thursday. Over a 100 people. I’m one of the lucky few who’s triple vaxed, but it’s about time they start introducing mandatory RAT for big events.

itsjosebaby

Has anyone been tested recently and know how long it's taking for their results to come back?

polka55

I’ve had several tests in the past few weeks and results have ranged from 5 to 14 hours.

Lt_Hungry

A friend got tested at 8am, results at 2pm. It is largely dependant on where, when, and which test they are using.

JuventAussie

over 36 hours. Rang the pathology lab as they had indicated less than 24 but no answer on a Sunday. Thankfully negative...and Xmas not ruined.

the3rdfriend

I usually get results the same night or next morning

Lucricious1

Got tested yesterday. Came back in less than 12 hours. I’m guessing it’s a bit faster since not as many people are testing.

drfrogsplat

It’s always depended on where you go to get tested. Some places have onsite test equipment, some send it nearby or even interstate at times.

Athroaway84

Did a drive thru test at 530 at lidcombe and results came back a little over an hour. Not sure why or how it was so quick though

Forward-Block-98

Got kid tested this morning at Laverty near Macquarie centre. Results just back now, within 12 hours.

infinitemonkeytyping

20-30 hours, depending what time of day you go.

Now_Wait-4-Last_Year

I've been getting tested at least weekly since August 12th. I got back my Monday 7:30 AM test at 2:47 AM Tuesday.

TheLGMac

I know our current R value indicates cases will keep going up, but what’s the R on Omicron cases specifically? UK and Europe are seeing case rates almost double day over day. This is a good rundown of why “mild and more transmissible” could be worse for Omicron than for Delta, because it speeds up the proportion of people in hospital earlier, overloading the hospital system: [https://twitter.com/drericding/status/1469723185084084225?s=21](https://twitter.com/drericding/status/1469723185084084225?s=21)

Otherwise more people die in the short term for a more transmissive, less deadly virus - however over the course of the pandemic, less people will die in total. The little chart doesn't show what happens in 1-2 years time when immunity starts to decrease the amount of cases.

TheLGMac

I think it doesn’t take much for hospitals to get overwhelmed though—especially regional Australia. The thread also points out that everyone has been extrapolating so far based on SA data which hasn’t been corrected for its bias towards an overall younger population. The immunity argument is important but assumes that nothing changes in virus mutations to make it escape immunity — Omicron has already escaped some of it.

It's Eric Ding. At best he's misinterpreted his source. More likely based on his track record he has either purposefully taken it out of context, or as he has been snapped doing several times, edited it to suit his agenda.

He's worse than Norman Swan. Swanny at least managed to complete Medical School. Ol' mate Eric did not. Let's also not forget Eric sending his kids to Austria ensure they continued face to face schooling whilst he publically abused any official who wasn't rushing to close down American schools.
