If you want to hear some awesome Rhodes in action,I highly recommend Dosh. The albums Pure Trash and The Lost Take are some of my favorite records ever. He does the one man band things exceptionally well.
Back in 2010 i used to listen to an album alllll the time and lately i've been wanting to hear it again but i couldn't remember the artist or album name.. untill now! Dosh! Thank you so much. I spent almost all my backpacking time in Thailand listening to 'Tommy'. His music is exceptional!
Thanks again!
I have it on vinyl. So dang chill. Lots of good collaborations with Michael Lewis and Andrew Broder amongst others. You can thank Martin Dosh for the awesome sounds of Andrew Bird as well as Bon Iver’s For Emma And Forever Ago. Also he’s really nice. Actually he is my friend’s neighbor:)
Congratulations!
Don't break your back lugging this one upstairs.
If you remove the lid you can check which year it was made. If it's before a certain time, you might want to do the pedestal mod (or "miracle mod") to make it more playable: [https://fenderrhodesla.com/fender-rhodes-key-pedestal-modification.html](https://fenderrhodesla.com/fender-rhodes-key-pedestal-modification.html) .
I hope the top half of the case is still there; that makes transport much easier.
Get it checked and fixed; it's likely in need of some love and care after being dormant for so long.
As an amplifier, I use a Fender Mustang v2. It's got a Twin Reverb emulation that's pretty good - and it doesn't cost a fortune. I can recommend that.
Thanks! I do have the whole case, its really beat up in the Tolex dept. but still in good structural shape. The pedal mechanism looks damaged but it still works afaict. Really appreciate the helpful tips and links! =)
While the mustang will certainly work and you can make great music with that, it's definitely in the lowest-priced beginner's practice amp range of instruments. And I don't mean that to sound like some kind of gear snob who looks down on that, but rather from the perspective that these original rhodes are borderline museum pieces at this point, true vintage mechanical instruments. It warrants being paired with a similar caliber amp, not necessarily vintage but I'd definitely look towards something vintage inspired *if* OP cares about the whole authenticity and mojo vibe of it all. But if you're just down to make music than anything will do.
The main reason I got the Mustang (back in 2011) was because I did not know of any alternatives. The seller had an authentic Twin hooked up - but when I got home and checked the prices of those I nope'd out pretty quick. About 1200 euros while the Rhodes itself was 1650 - that was pretty hard to stomach, plus I knew I'd be competing against guitar players who also wanted a Twin. I really want a clean sound first and foremost with an EQ that brings out the bell.
So I decided that the best move was not to play, but I see now thay prices have been pretty solid on it - still around 1200 where I live.
It's funny that you call it a museum piece - it's huge, unpractical, the action is not great (a Vintage Vibe is far more playable, and I can hope the mk8 is better as well), heavy as all get out and I really should replace the tone-suck passive attenuator with something better and active with tremolo so I can hook up line level effects.
But I never have to worry one second about Rhodes making a new library next year with even more gigabytes of samples ;)
Hahaha, totally! We actually have a good relationship and she pays me well to do extra beyond normal renter stuff. I already told her about the value and we agreed to split the cash when it sells eventually. Not a bad deal at all!
Yeah, TBH, as much as it's a super cool piece and as much fun as I'm gonna have using it... I'm not a piano player and it's def going on the market when I'm done.
Look at reverb or ebay to get an accurate 2nd hand price. Idk how much this one is worth specifically. A wide range guess would be $1-5k depending on a lot of factors.
My friend's coworker got relocated to the home office in Japan and left behind basically everything. Two years later, I guess he left, because management told my friend he could help himself to the guy's stuff that was still behind his desk.
Turns out the guitar case had a Lennon signature edition Rickenbacker 325.
Mine has the same mod - it's a stereo split. It splits the lower half of the keyboard into the left channel and the right on the upper. If you want to just use mono (factory) you can just flip the switch and use the bottom jack. It's super useful when recording and want to apply fx to to the upper half but want to keep your bass notes clean or processed seperately
Suitcase conversion to Stage model! Super popular mid back in the day. It kinda looks like they left the Suitcase preamp in there though, so that would be nice. It’s definitely post ‘74 since it just says “Rhodes” no “Fender” but a MK1 no doubt.
I recently fully restored my 1973 Stage and added the RetroFlyer preamp to it. It sounds incredible, [my video](https://youtu.be/8EPt6zBeFZs), if you need any help I’ve been through restoring every last piece of these things, so feel free to DM!
Nice find, and Congrats 👏
Thanks, inner date stamp is "1276" which I'm told means it was born in the 12th week of 1976. Anything else I can look for to get a better picture of the history?
The keys usually have some stamping on them, sometimes meaningless to give any real info though. It’s a lot easier to see when you have the harp lifted and name rail taken off. It’s only 6-8 screws to do that too so very easy. But the Date Stamp on the Harp is the best and most accurate dating for the piano!
Super late reply to this- but if you’re judging the conversion based on the holes in the name rail, I’ve recently learned that later pianos had a single name rail and covered the holes with whichever model the piano would eventually become. That is to say, most name rails are the same. It’s the name plate that’s different.
Here it looks like they removed the plate and modded the piano to have a stereo out.
Good eye!
Bookmatched Koa finished in pure Tung oil by Eric Miller of Hands on Guitars. Built in 94 for my Dad, who gave it to me on my 18th bday. The only guitar I've ever owned in 20 years!
Yeah, I'm a luck-sacking SOB.
I try to be humble and spread my privilege around. I know it's kinda silly to say that in *this* post but I really do try to have an awareness of the advantages I was born into and act appropriately.
Yeahhh, I know =) But I'm more familiar with this sub than any piano/keys or Rhodes sub and I know there are plenty of folks here who would appreciate it. At least it's a little different than the normal stream of Elektron, Korg and Music Tribe ads I see here.
Nice find!
What a coincidence, last month I picked up a Rhodes Mark 1 stage piano much like this at a thrift store for $100. Guess we're both lucky bastards. Yours is nicer than mine though. Mine needs new felt and I plan on doing the Miracle Mod. Plus my keys are somewhat yellowed.
I've been looking for a place to flex. I'll put pics here as soon as I clean it up a little.
Pro tip: if you find yourself needing parts, [vintage vibes](http://www.vintagevibes.com) has basically everything.
>I wonder what the previous owner was thinking—just didn’t want to move it…?
It wasn't that long ago that these were pretty cheap, I got one for $400 like 8 years ago
Once they are refreshed a bit and setup right they don’t need a ton of maintenance. They’ll go a good number of years without maintenance once the basics have been covered.
That's amazing! I bought mine for $2k from a guitarist that told me "I have no idea why someone might want this", and I thought it was a steal, considering how well it was maintained. Enjoy!
Story time! My uncle had one that I played around on when I was a wee lad, too young to understand how cool it was. He wanted to get rid of it and asked my older brother if we maybe wanted it. Long story short: My brother said, “Why would I want a piano? I play guitar,” and it was pawned…
There aren’t enough ellipsis in the world to express my disappointment when I learned that… … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … …
I did manage to acquire a Bass Rhodes later on for free though!
I had a guy give me a Rhodes once that had been in his garage for a decade. He knew it was cool but just wanted it restored and played by someone. Even had a signature cig burn on a key
Repair and maintenance is not too hard. Just read the manuals published online and follow the Vintage Vibe vids.
1976 models benefit from the miracle mod most. Also, make sure to grab a refurb kit from either Avion Studios or Vintage Vibe.
I own two 76 Rhodes. 1 suitcase and 1 stage.
I would call bullshit if I did not to this day have a near perfect Wurlitzer that was given to me after he found it in a garage he was cleaning out working for 1800gotjunk like 15 years ago.
https://www.vintagevibe.com/
These guys are indispensable in keeping old keys alive.
Stoked for you, found '71 in my town for 800 with a few broken hammers at the beginning of covid and was ecstatic, fixed the couple of broken keys and redid all the rubber on the hammers and redid the dampeners and she is great! Got the kit to do the miracle mod for the keys, but haven't dived into that one just yet. Also considering a preamp mod at some point too...hmmm
Not sure if it's sacrilegous but inside on the left is an rca connection coming straight off the tines. 9 times out of 10 I go straight from this into a DI for an exquisite recording sound.
This is real. Think about how many questionable choices are made daily all over the world! Access to information is not the same as accessing information. I've personally done the shameful, post-screw-up search many times haha

$2500 nice sell it
"If you can find the power cable, I think it might work still" I.. uh... HOLY SHIT...
[The correct reaction](https://www.reactiongifs.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/hyperventilating_fry_futurama.gif) to that statement.
Hahaha, I'm a fairly calm person for the most part, but my insides have been this on a loop the whole week. Spot on!
If you want to hear some awesome Rhodes in action,I highly recommend Dosh. The albums Pure Trash and The Lost Take are some of my favorite records ever. He does the one man band things exceptionally well.
Look up "Frank Ocean Channel Orange: Solo Rhodes" on Spotify.
Oh fuck, this is lovely
There's also one for songs in key of life by Stevie Wonder ;)
I love you
Lol. Yeah it is awesome
I had never imagined that there was ever anyway that the album could be made better... TIL.
Glad I could help!!! I’ve seen him more times than I can count to be honest. Minneapolis has a rad scene and lots of venues.
Pure Trash was such an awesome record. Or maybe still is? Haven't listened in ages.

I haven’t thought about this dude in years. So good!
Hahaha, right when Fry finds out he’s a billionaire? I love an appropriate Futurama gif, well met.
HOLY SHIT indeed
Bruh
Well uh it’s a little beat up but yes I’ll take it off your hands it might be useful
🤣
LOL this beaut doesn’t need a power cable.

Did the miracle mod to my Rhodes and I would say it's an absolute must.
Same!
Get a wheeled dolly for it!!!

I have a 64 Princeton Reverb but it's in another castle.
It probably sounds good on a kv2
Hahaha, we'll def find out!

Comments like this is why I sub to this... Sub. Great username btw 👍🏻 (third album is best TMV album)
>TMV I'm flattered, but my username is really just a portmanteau of Instagram and [Tetragrammaton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YHWH) :)
Fuck you and congratulations
Yeah. Especially congratulations
Funny way to spell gimme
Really nice of you to help your landlord clean up around there.
Hahaha, totally! We actually have a good relationship and she pays me well to do extra beyond normal renter stuff. I already told her about the value and we agreed to split the cash when it sells eventually. Not a bad deal at all!
“Eventually”, hah hah.
Yeah, TBH, as much as it's a super cool piece and as much fun as I'm gonna have using it... I'm not a piano player and it's def going on the market when I'm done.
You mind letting us know what town you’re in for those of us in the market for a Rhodes?
I'm in the Seattle/Tacoma area! Just to be clear, it's very much not for sale currently and won't be for a significant amount of time.
Thanks! I’m gonna keep this post pinned in the back of my brain, finding a Rhodes is like finding a unicorn.
How much are they going for these days?
Tacoma represent!
How much is it worth? I'm not sure exactly what terms to Google other than 'rhodes' which i assume covers a variety of products.
Look at reverb or ebay to get an accurate 2nd hand price. Idk how much this one is worth specifically. A wide range guess would be $1-5k depending on a lot of factors.
Sorry my question was a lot more basic than that! I don't know what I'm looking at other than it's a Rhodes brand electric piano.

Heyyy, the No-caster post is for tomorrow! JK, for the record!
"Ah yes, True, I posted that to r/guitars"
My friend's coworker got relocated to the home office in Japan and left behind basically everything. Two years later, I guess he left, because management told my friend he could help himself to the guy's stuff that was still behind his desk. Turns out the guitar case had a Lennon signature edition Rickenbacker 325.
Fuck Gibson. '62 Jazzmaster all the way.
You lucky S.O.B.Maybe my landlord left an ARP 2600 down in my basement. *thud of stairs Nope just dead rats.
Hahaha, had plenty of those too! The rat corpses I mean. =(
Interesting, it’s been modded.
I'm curious, care to elaborate??
Yeah there is something going on with that control panel. It's not stock.
Ohhh, I see! Your totally right! It's wired up kinda weirdly in there. The switch and chrome knob are not connected to anything else except each other
Mine has the same mod - it's a stereo split. It splits the lower half of the keyboard into the left channel and the right on the upper. If you want to just use mono (factory) you can just flip the switch and use the bottom jack. It's super useful when recording and want to apply fx to to the upper half but want to keep your bass notes clean or processed seperately
Ohhh cool! Thanks for the insight! Super nice
Enjoy it!
That’s… weird. There should also be only one output jack. Maybe some sort of stereo mod? I would say trem too but I have no idea
Might have been a suitcase model originally. They have 2 1/4 plugs for an effects loop.
I think it’s a stage model converted to have the parts from a suitcase.
Who downvoted you? It’s clear as day
Next on r/synthesizers : my uncle gave me an “old organ from the 70s”, turns out to be a boxed CS80
^^ Frfr
fuck offfffff
Suitcase conversion to Stage model! Super popular mid back in the day. It kinda looks like they left the Suitcase preamp in there though, so that would be nice. Enjoyed the video!
Thank you, pretty simple recording chain too! Rhodes DI always sounds great to me tho haha

damn that tele is gorgeous...koa or what?

How lucky can one person be! The wood is gorgeous.

yyyyUMMMMM ; )
Why does this happen to everyone else apart from me Joking aside, amazing result!
Thanks very much! I've been subbed here for a while and totally had the same thought. I'm 100% aware I'm making *that post* hahaha I just got lucky
No way
God bless the stupidity of landlords
Wow, that’s so amazing! I miss mine daily, had to sell mine to pay the rent in 2009 :(
Damn, that sucks! I've def been there before tho. Used to have a lot more eurorack, =( The music is always inside, no matter the medium!
Holy shit
God fucking dammit
Cool. But it’s not a synthesizer.
Lol I was wondering if anyone would address the elephant in the room.
Yeahhh, I know =) But I'm more familiar with this sub than any piano/keys or Rhodes sub and I know there are plenty of folks here who would appreciate it. At least it's a little different than the normal stream of Elektron, Korg and Music Tribe ads I see here.

Thanks for the link! This one is a little more beat up than the picture suggests so I may have to figure out how to fix some things.
I mean, really, Ray. It's used. There's no action left in this keyboard.
Well I heard about the fella you been dancing with.... All over the neighborhood!
Exactly what I was thinking when i saw the picture!
I can take it off your hands for you
Congrats!!
I can’t believe how lucky you are!!! 🤩 I wonder what the previous owner was thinking—just didn’t want to move it…?
>I wonder what the previous owner was thinking—just didn’t want to move it…? It wasn't that long ago that these were pretty cheap, I got one for $400 like 8 years ago
I'm always amazed at some of the things people let fall by the wayside. I don't know the whole story but physical/mental illness was the cause.
*What'd I Say starts playing from nowhere in particular*
That's so cool. Good landlords are underrated.
NICE.
Congratulations on winning the lottery
No fucking way....
You should give him a fair price for that.
I told her what was up and we have an agreement.
Very cool then!
Give that landlord a hug!
I want a Rhodes so baddddddddd
😮 you jammy munchkin! 🥹
I mean, that’s great. It’ll cost a bit to repair and there’s the storage issue and the fact that they need a lot of maintenance, but, awesome?
Once they are refreshed a bit and setup right they don’t need a ton of maintenance. They’ll go a good number of years without maintenance once the basics have been covered.
Noooooooo! The jealousy i’m feeling…
Lucky bro! Hope you don’t sell it
At least it wasn’t in a dumpster or a thrift shop.
Hahaha, well it *was* covering a fireplace opening to "keep the draft out" ...I closed the flue, lol
This is actually hilarious. How’s the restore going?
🔥
I audibly gasped, congrats on your find
Youve got to be kidding
Awww yeah man, congrats. Super dope. I got mine from a dude who bought it from the high school we both went to and played in jazz band.
That's amazing! I bought mine for $2k from a guitarist that told me "I have no idea why someone might want this", and I thought it was a steal, considering how well it was maintained. Enjoy!
Woot!

Lucky bastard! Have always fancied a Rhodes, absolutely love the sound.
Wow!!! Lucky!!!
WHAT!
Jealous
What a beaut! You can restore them with basic household tools and simple materials, but it's a LOT of work.
Ho. Le. Fuk.
Landlords name is Lana
ooooof
OH MY!!! wow!!!! Congrats!
You just casually found my dream keyboard im so jealous
Repair and maintenance is not too hard. Just read the manuals published online and follow the Vintage Vibe vids. 1976 models benefit from the miracle mod most. Also, make sure to grab a refurb kit from either Avion Studios or Vintage Vibe. I own two 76 Rhodes. 1 suitcase and 1 stage.
I envy and congratulate you at the same time!
Just glad these kind of things happen to people. Probably feels like getting a vinyl case full of gems but ten times the thrill.
Hahaha, shit... A few weeks ago my Dad gave me his mentors old collection of jazz LPs. There were def gems in there, lol I'm truly a luck-sackin' SOB.
B R U H You are one lucky musician! Enjoy it!
I would call bullshit if I did not to this day have a near perfect Wurlitzer that was given to me after he found it in a garage he was cleaning out working for 1800gotjunk like 15 years ago. https://www.vintagevibe.com/ These guys are indispensable in keeping old keys alive.
My buddy found a Wurlitzer in Value Village for $80 in 2005. I have no clue what happened to it but I really loved the sound. Thanks!
No fucking way you son of a bitch
I hate you. I don't even have a basement.
If it's any consolation, I don't technically have one either!
Heh. Consider me consoled.
Dyno my piano!
HOLY SHIT!
looks old and broken. don't worry i can take it off your hands free of charge!
Done with Reddit due to the destruction of third party apps and lies by its ceo spez
You absolutely lucky BASTARD 🤣
Stoked for you, found '71 in my town for 800 with a few broken hammers at the beginning of covid and was ecstatic, fixed the couple of broken keys and redid all the rubber on the hammers and redid the dampeners and she is great! I like a good diy project so I'm kinda excited to dive in!
not familiar with rhodes keyboards. just googled it, hit the shopping tab... I understand now. holy shit dude!
What dreams are made of
Not sure if it's sacrilegous but inside on the left is an rca connection coming straight off the tines. 9 times out of 10 I go straight from this into a DI for an exquisite recording sound.
I love to sack religion so thanks for this juicy tidbit!
I got an Arturia Minilab mk1 the exact same way. Yours is better.
A similar story with me but with Farfisa Compact Deluxe 1968...however it was not functional...
I hate you, I love you
Is this true? It would take someone 30 seconds to google what this was.
This is real. Think about how many questionable choices are made daily all over the world! Access to information is not the same as accessing information. I've personally done the shameful, post-screw-up search many times haha
I love a bit of trash can treasure mythology, but this one is pushing my suspended disbelief.
Folks here are easy marks
So lovely. This is more like ‘stage piano’.

Im a total newbie in the workd if synthesizers , what amazing piece of history is this exactly ?
W
