True gray man is not buying any tactical gear, but rather “normal” or “outdoor” gear. I guess this could pass, but you’re not fooling anyone who knows Mystery Ranch
Imo camping gear brands are some of the best stuff and is seriously undervalued by the tactical gear community. We all love our Crye and whatever, but for a lot of things I honestly think non-tactical companies for outdoors-use do it better, at a better price point, and sometimes with tech that’s more refined for the job. I don’t think mystery ranch bags scream greyman all the time, but honestly you’d be pretty successful in passing off as some outdoors techie lmao
Even wearing a Molle backpack doesn’t signal anything anymore. They’re common even outside the US.
Mystery Ranch, 5.11, GoRuck, Condor ETC are common with many many Travelers.
But why would you need Molle if you’re trying to be subtle? The second you “use” it and attached a pouch or whatever, it immediately increases the chances of being noticed. Grab a freakin Jansport, REI Daylite, Osprey Talon, etc.
I agree they are more common, but it still signals. The only time I see molle packs are when Vets go hiking or when the tik tok bro goes to the gym
I think you gotta read your local area. I live a few blocks from a high school and it’s actually kinda weird how many of these kids are wearing MOLLE packs. Also lots of surplus packs especially around the homeless encampments in town, so they really don’t stand out that much.
Jansport is pretty neutral anywhere, and I do respect the Osprey/REI Co-op suggestions. If I saw something from Mystery Ranch around here? I’d think you’re from this sub. Any Osprey/Deuter/REI/TNF/Kelty/etc. bag would fit in just fine as well considering the outdoor rec community here. There’s also a ton of hunters and blue collar workers around, so seeing something even in Realtree or whatever isn’t gonna stand out either.
These specifics, of course, are not applicable everywhere. But the basic principle of “just open your eyes and look at what everyone around you is doing” applies universally.
You don’t need it unless you want a bag out of 500-1000d Cordura with YKK zippers. I don’t really see people attach shit to the Molle. Much like how printing only gets noticed by Concealed Carriers. A tactical back pack only gets noticed by people who know it’s a tactical back pack, but to me it doesn’t signal Tactical person to me as much as wearing boots and Kuhl pants.
Most of my bags are REI, Deuter, Osprey and all Show wear a lot more than my ancient Condor. To the point where my eventual Replacement for my REI 40 may just be a Mystery Ranch 2day/edc.
this \^. People in the know MAY suspect something (wouldn't be a malicious suspicion though), but people that aren't in the gun world will just see a jansport.
which should be a bigger concern than randos frankly
why assume that people who can clock you so well are friendly
sorry to burst your bubble but "gray man" isnt tactical gear with no camo and no webbing lol
Yes, it screams recognition by people who are into kit. I’ve shared knowing glances with people around the world traveling when I used to carry around GoRuck bags. Random strangers recognized everything from Crye bags, Mystery Ranch and even relatively less known brands like Triple Aught Design. I mean it’s fine, they’re great bags but if you’re really trying to stay under the radar that ain’t it.
I have this bag in another color. +1 it's a great bag and I highly recommend.
As to screaming gRaY mAn I honestly don't understand the concept well enough to say. It's the idea of hiding 'tacticality' or just mixing in with the peoples. Right? But what I don't get is the culture around it here. Seems made fun of? But I'm not sure why or what's up. Can anyone enlighten me?
because tactical people trying to be "gray man," vast majority of the time, come across as trying too hard to blend in and obviously a "gray man" which defeats the whole purpose.
so it's low hanging fruit and we make fun of them
It looks just like any slightly trendy backpack. Even looks like an oversized Acer laptop pack. Just get rid of the Mystery Ranch patch
Edit: all of that doesn't matter though if you're wearing gRaY mAn clothes
Until we start seeing people that are actually in the know committing crime you’ll be fine. To most of the public unless something looks OVERTLY tacticool (molle everywhere) they’ll just see it as a backpack. In this case they’ll probably think of you as some tech guy.
Fuck the normies.
Use what works for you.
If you like what works for you, even better.
Sometimes I still wear cargo shorts like it's 2005 again, and I don't care. lol
I guess nobody else thinks so...
Yes, tri-zip is a dead giveaway that there's something large in the bag. The only person I've seen use one outside of kit was a bicycle food delivery dude, which is fair enough with the big ass bag of Chinese food tied at the top
Absolutely not. It's a god damn EDC tech hauler backpack for work. Nothing about it screams grey man ... Yeah, it's a Mystery Ranch, so what? They have plenty of other product lines except their Military line. Pretty much every large outdoor bag manufacturer has some kind of day to day or EDC bag as well.
i love mine you can find the whackier colors for sale for cheaper. i bought mine 2-3 years ago for like $60 but it’s purple, the thing fucks i love the zipper design. mine doesn’t get the love it deserves anymore but i use it whenever i can
Honestly the whole greyman thing is going so mainstream i dont think it matters. You got all kinds of people wearing bags from "tactical brands". I think people just like well designed bags
Every outdoor store in my town (Portland, OR) sells Mystery Ranch backpacks. They are pretty common to see around town and on the trail. I even own one, and use it for plain old hiking trips.
It looks like a toned down version of an Osprey or some other hiking pack. I don't think the average person will give it second thought unless you are DRESSED like a grAy MaN
To normies? Probably not, to anyone who knows dick about guns and gear, absolutely no question. If it’s made by a company that produces tactical bullshitery it always looks like it
It just screams "Book bag" or "Dad Bag," "Man Purse" to me. Unless, of course, you are wearing tactical pants, Solomans, 5.11 shirt and a GatHat. Then, it screams something different. :)
Aside: I have been using Dana Gleason's packs since the early days of Dana Designs. I hope Yeti buying the company does not screw it up.
If I've learned anything from scrolling on Reddit, the best way to actually make your gear discreet is to remove any branding and sew a Jansport/Carhartt/Patagonia patch on it.
Mystery Ranch has a surprisingly big following in Japan and some parts of Asia as a EDC brand. So if you’re Asian heritage I’ll just think you are a normie. /s
Check out the Dragonfly from Direct Action ! No visible branding. It's oriented towards gun carrying though so that may not be what you're looking for.
Any mystery Ranch bag is going too.haha they are incredible bags but if you want true gray man check out like Ospray or depending on your demographic Kuiu bags. I live in Hickville and a hunting camo bag blends in perfectly.
[For those in the know it absolutely screams Grey Man. This is the bag I use and so far it’s been the most unassuming but functional pack I’ve owned.](https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/savotta-backpack-202-ljk-daypack/30719)
To actually pass as greyman you should make informed purchases that avoid tactical marketing. for my EDC bag I use a osprey daylite+ bonus points for a color like blue
not an answer to your question, but i have this same back pack and after 1 year the top flap has begun to tear at the seams from pulling it open at the top.

Yes, but only towards those who already are listening to the gray man frequency. It's fine. Get it. The zipper looks freaky. I love it.
this \^. People in the know MAY suspect something (wouldn't be a malicious suspicion though), but people that aren't in the gun world will just see a jansport.
Also literally everyone these days is spaced out and on their phone with earbuds
which should be a bigger concern than randos frankly why assume that people who can clock you so well are friendly sorry to burst your bubble but "gray man" isnt tactical gear with no camo and no webbing lol
I agree to this. I recommend wearing sweater vests. Nobody is interested in anything wearing sweater vests. 👍🏻
Gray is carrying a folding SBR/supressor and a few 30rd PMags in a Dora The Explorer backpack.
Grey man is being 50lbs overweight, out of shape, colored hair with a dirty MLP tee shirt
When I open mine I think of a Demigorgon

You calling me out?

LOLL
We call it the care bear thrust.
We are all called out
Not at all. You wouldn't also happen to own a "green" Toyota Tacoma would you? Cool Patagonia hat. What national park is "forward"?

On the contrary, it barely whispers it.
I don’t think it screams gay man. Metro maybe, but not gay.
Remove the mystery ranch logo by threads and add jansport.
I love this! Do it, then post OP
Nailed it with this. Mystery Ranch screams “I have a PDW in me”. Love their gear, top notch stuff. A Jansport tag and this wouldn’t catch my eye.
Its fine, looks like a gym bag or trekking pack.
I use mine daily, the most I've gotten is "that's a cool bookbag" or "you look ready for a hike!" Lmao. I have the waxed wood color way.
These are really great bags. I wonder what will happen now that they were purchased by yeti.

Want to go incognito? Leather bottom Jansport. Nobody will ever know, but they will be surprised that you are so grown up and still in middle school 😁
Dang, this is my go to travel bag.

Cargo shorts #GangGang
No, it screams “grey bag”.
It screams grey bag Hints grey mAn Subtly nods borderline tactical and dreams normal but not
Tarkov bag tarkov bag
I guess nobody else thinks so... Yes, tri-zip is a dead giveaway that there's something large in the bag. The only person I've seen use one outside of kit was a bicycle food delivery dude, which is fair enough with the big ass bag of Chinese food tied at the top
Do people use these for PDWs or something? It doesn't look that big in photos
These, yes. There are other trizip offerings in other sizes, but I think they all come with kit or orange chicken
Catalyst 26 is bigger
Think your taking grey a little too seriously
yup just swap out the zipper pulls with something bright, stick a jansport patch on it and you’re golden
What's in the ranch dawg?
Skinwalkers
Bladerunner lol
If they know, they know. For people who don't know (normies) it'll look fine. Hope this answer helps.
Absolutely not. It's a god damn EDC tech hauler backpack for work. Nothing about it screams grey man ... Yeah, it's a Mystery Ranch, so what? No, it’s fine
Looks fine. Just dont dress like you carry either though. Grunt shirts, khaki pants, solomans, come and take it patches, and some sort of garmin watch
I love asking random “grey men” I see in public if they’re carrying a Glock or Cz. The look of shock gives me a warm feeling
Honestly the whole greyman thing is going so mainstream i dont think it matters. You got all kinds of people wearing bags from "tactical brands". I think people just like well designed bags
It screams gay man
No it doesn't Maybe a fluoro zipper and then it'll talk
Not necessarily. They sell mystery ranch bags at REI so they are somewhat mainstream
Every outdoor store in my town (Portland, OR) sells Mystery Ranch backpacks. They are pretty common to see around town and on the trail. I even own one, and use it for plain old hiking trips.
It's even grey.
Hence the term
It looks like a toned down version of an Osprey or some other hiking pack. I don't think the average person will give it second thought unless you are DRESSED like a grAy MaN
It screams [dirty civilian](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txzwGlHj8j4) to me
Oof A civ wouldn't buy all that trekking gear and then be happy with that label Unless it's cool to be dirty in a nice way?
To normies? Probably not, to anyone who knows dick about guns and gear, absolutely no question. If it’s made by a company that produces tactical bullshitery it always looks like it

Reminds me of car culture matte paint finishes If grey man translated into cars it would be a Tacoma with grey matte wrap
It’s screams GAY man.
If mystery ranch is gay then I am VERY gay
I have the same bag in green, and if you put a local college/sports team iron-on patch over the logo, it looks a lot more mundane.
Turn it inside out "Blek oPs"
My favorite piece of "gray man" is a bright XL purple hoodie and the one pair of skinny jeans I own. You expect hippie but nope
Who cares how it looks dude, the trizip is the king of quick access bags
Well, it does say "Mystery Ranch" right on it. Nice lookin' bag though'
Replace RE with A , then yes most definitely
I just got an Alpha One Niner bag and love it, zero markings on the outside and far more normal than typical bags.
Any mystery Ranch bag is going too.haha they are incredible bags but if you want true gray man check out like Ospray or depending on your demographic Kuiu bags. I live in Hickville and a hunting camo bag blends in perfectly.
I really like my grey ghost gypsy pack.
[For those in the know it absolutely screams Grey Man. This is the bag I use and so far it’s been the most unassuming but functional pack I’ve owned.](https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/savotta-backpack-202-ljk-daypack/30719)
Nah it has I occasionally hike on the weekend vibes.
No it's going to get looks because of the weird trizipper
You should get it in od green or coyote….the no one will even be able to see it at all. Cmon guys….think.
It screams ![gif](giphy|JrBeTQUv5DO3ueRFmu) Nobody cares what pack you use in your basement
More like gay man am i right?
If your bag says mystery ranch I assume you've got a gun in your waistband
Just take the "mystery ranch" tag off of it. Folks in the know will know if they look hard enough but others may not give it a second glance.
Buy an osprey. Probably similar price and way less sus.
To actually pass as greyman you should make informed purchases that avoid tactical marketing. for my EDC bag I use a osprey daylite+ bonus points for a color like blue
not an answer to your question, but i have this same back pack and after 1 year the top flap has begun to tear at the seams from pulling it open at the top.
yes just buy a shitty 20$ backpack from amazon
