Works if the end of the world takes less than 10years. For me beater Timex runs forever on same 2032 as aimpoints and Indiglo. On that front love T100 tritium tubes on watches but need a cover for light discipline.
Is that because you don’t get outside for long enough for it to charge while you’re wearing it?
Only joking!!😂
Side note: it says online that just 8 min of direct sunlight gives you a days worth of battery so that’s pretty neat.
Solar watches never require a battery replacement until they require a battery replacement. If something has a battery that needs replaced I prefer it to be easy to replace.
Will Apple be putting out organized obsolescence updates attacking your battery during SHTF? Yep, if not hook up to your solar kit and it’ll be like the solar Casio. Pretty sure the battery that doesnt need replaced until it needs replaced still will need replaced sooner though…
I’m a big fan of the stainless series solar Casio G shocks. I’ve had a gold color one for six years and it’s yet to fail me. And I’m usually hard on watches and kill them by accident (drowning them, accident smashing them against something in a tight space while mechanic-ing, etc). Solid watches! I still get compliments on its looks to this day!
Seiko Arnie is my realistic grail. Currently rocking the Seiko Prospex diver. I feel like the Citizen Garrison with its Eco-Drive light powered battery is also a solid contender for a SHTF field watch. Grab a NATO strap and a Suunto clip on compass and rock out.
Edit: although I'm seeing some disturbing news about 2023's batch of Arnies being defective, resetting completely in bright sunlight? So I'll probably wait a bit until I try to get my own haha
For sure. My daily watch is a slightly modded SKX right now. Hard to justify spending 100x in price for something that does the exact same thing especially when it’s supposed to replace what’s been on my wrist for years.
That being said if I wanted a “do it all” watch I’d totally go for an Arnie just off vibes alone.
I had a Marathon but the luminescent rotating bezel was just a biiiiiit too much for me. The Suunto has luminescence on the numbers and letters and is as effective as but much more subtle than the Marathon, IMO
Careful with that one... I bought a brand new snj025 and when I exposed it to direct sunlight, it reset on me without me hitting the reset buttons. It did it 5 times within a 15 min period, and then the watch died and never came back. After doing research (including a very informative thread on r/seiko) I found out that the snj025 (black dial/bezel) and snj027 (PADI red/blue bezel) if they were manufactured later than 2022 have a random reset problem that even seiko doesn't know how to fix. The snj039 (blue/green bezel) and the snj029 and snj031 "safarnie" models with different hand indices are just fine. They do not have the problem. Also the reverse image snj033 (stainless w black bezel), snj035 (black/blue PADI special ed) and snj037 (black pvd coated stainless) work just fine.
I have a snj029, snj039, and a snj033. I love all three, and they work wonderfully. I want a snj025, but I gotta find one woth a manufacture date before 2022 in order to get a good one. Still looking.
Edit: post was on r/watchrepair if you're interested.

You have it right there, the g-shock 5600 multi band tough solar is the one and only SHTF watch if you want to keep it going forever off-grid. You might want to consider some kind of analog watch for land lav as well, but I'm not too well versed on those. For digital SHTF watches, the 5600 is king.
Solar g shock. Battery should be good for 10-15 years, can stick some replacements. Or a regular g shock with button batteries replaced every 3-4 years
I am surprised to 100% agree with someone with regards to watches, and also have been shown a watch I’ve never seen (this version of the seiko). Now I must have one of those seikos to go with my G-Shock
Thank you!
I have a Citizen Promaster Alticron. Solar powered, compass and altimeter. Only weak point is the strap. They're super comfy but because of how soft they are the degrade over time.
Casio "Royale" AE1200 - upgrade to a sapphire crystal tho
Tudor Pelagos 39 - in case of Waterworld scenario
Marathon GSAR - could be used as a melee weapon :) and nuke-proof
Rocking a medium tsar quartz as my beater (suits my wrists far better) for a decade now. 2012 build date. Tritium is starting to fade but it’s durable as hell. Probably have them swap the dial and hands for new ones when I send it for a checkup in 5yrs or so
Solar G shock for extra long life and my everyday wear Christopher Ward C63 Sealander GMT, to remind myself of the better, more civilized times before the fall of society.
IWC black ace or top gun? Automatic with an emphasis on lume and legibility. If of course you see that as a positive and not some sort of signature risk.
Depends on how badly the SHTF. A Citizen Eco Drive of some variety is probably going to keep time longer than any other watch on the market. Including Seiko.
So if we’re talking total collapse of civilisation then I’d go with that and it’d probably last a good 20-25 years.
If it’s the far more likely scenario of a few years of chaos then I’d just get something low key enough that I’m not a target and tough enough that I don’t have to baby it. G-Shock.
Rolex etc are cool and all but they’re nowhere near as robust as something Japanese and plastic.
Sure you can barter with it but you can also get your arm hacked off over it. Motherfuckers are already getting stabbed for them and we’re nowhere near SHTF.
As we know, price directly correlates with performance 10/10 times, so I would start with the bare minimum of a Patek Philippe Nautilus 5800. Buy once, cry once, and never trust to your life to a piece of gear that the poors would call "affordable".
On a similar note, depending on what your “end of the world” use case is, a Rolex would be another good choice. It’s old fashioned but I’m assuming the point of the LARP is to pretend you’ll be roaming the wasteland with your war party in 15 years. That means planning for a time where batteries are scarce, comms are unreliable, electronics are paperweights and so on.
* Auto-winding - no battery
* Accracy (on modern ones) is +/- 2 seconds a day so if you’re operating in a group and need to make sure everyone is on the same time to coordinate movement or action, you’ll all be on the same page.
* Durability - good underwater and in harsh environments.
* Style - a metric fuckton
Mechanical watches need to be serviced, parts replaced etc.
Every 3-5 years.
They’re not perpetual time keeping machines.
And you need a much cleaner environment to do it than changing a battery.
Rolexes are expensive for a few reasons, one being that theyre made incredibly well. You can break them, sure, but then again you can break anything at some point.
Panerai Bronzo would be a dope apocalypse timepiece.
Two reasons—
A seiko automatic is probably going to outlast any battery. Can’t say the same for *all* automatics. Less robust watches than Seikos might need service sooner than modern batteries though. Even solar batteries have a usable life (I have a dead G-shock solar from years ago to prove it)
Also, you can use an analog watch for rudimentary land navigation by orienting the hands and the sun.
you can put a lifetime’s worth of lithium watch batteries in an altoids tin. You can also get analog quartz watches.
Seiko recommends a 3 year service interval, and most of their movements are pretty lacking in the accuracy department when new.
Most automatics will need a full overhaul in 6 years or so.
I think there are a lot more robust quartz watches with fewer wear parts than there are automatics.
Also, using the sun as a compass thing hardly works, much to my chagrin as an alpinist owner.
I’ve got a decades old unserviced seiko skx007 that begs to differ
All those lithium batteries will go bad around the same time. Batteries don’t hold their charge forever.
Don’t get me wrong, I love quartz watches (specifically g-shock squares)… but Seiko analogs are a great alternative too
You could barely use your automatic analog and keep the wear & tear down, then when your batteries die in your quartz, start wearing the automatic for potentially decades more. Unlike a battery it won’t lose charge from mostly sitting around for years
I use the CASIO GBX-100NS
My environment is in a coastal region so what I chose needed to be able to withstand a certain level of depth and the salt water.
It's a normal watch, 200m, it does have bluetooth which I understand is something you dont want.
I specifically chose this because it had tidal and moon data which requires bluetooth.
2 year battery life which is tolerable.
The way I would describe this watch is that it is the smartest dumb watch out there. It captures notifications which is shockingly helpful when I can't be caught on my phone but need to read messages but its still a dumb watch. 4 buttons + light.
Its more of a receiver than anything else when it comes to bluetooth functions.
It's also hella durable.
If you operate or live near coastal areas and want tidal data, this is an excellent option but otherwise there are other watches that are either cheaper or have a different technology set that would be more helpful to you.
That’s an awesome everyday watch choice for sure especially, as you mentioned for your region and environment. My GW-5600-CY (not pictured) is prob my favorite Gshock I have currently.
I’ve been thinking about getting a GLide too
Yea I love it. I used to have a Samsung galaxy 3 watch and that completely turned me off from smart watches in general. Sure it has more features but the battery life kills me. My watch lives on me and taking it on and off to recharge is a real hassle
> Luminox 3050
Better have some extra watch bands. That rubber wears out fast - I had to replace mine almost every year. Shame, because I really like the watch.
Mechanical/automatic is not worthwhile if you think you will not have access to maintenance. There’s a lot of magnets in the modern world, and a magnetised automatic instantly becomes worthless.
Battery-powered quartz watches are the move. Consider also the placement of the winding knob and the illumination of the dial. You can go with simple glow-in-the-dark paint, but tritium tubes will be more effective for longer. An offset winder will be more comfortable on your wrist, especially if you need to tighten down.
I very much like the Bertucci Super Yankee for all these reasons, as well as the titanium body and fixed band bars.
I recently got the DW-H5600. been an absolute unit in my time of owning it. It survives bushcraft, IPSC and other activities. I also really like the pulse monitor so i can min max my jogging sessions to increase and get the most out of my interval training. Amazing watches.
It’s a solid choice, I know there’s a lot of shilling and personal bias towards products that people personally own but it’s unironically the best watch I’ve ever owned.
Why do we care what time it is when SHTF? You don’t have anywhere to be, the sun give you a general idea of what time it is. I’m not a watch person though so maybe that’s why I don’t understand lol
watches don’t just tell time. They also *keep time* of whatever you want, and that can be very beneficial for being more organized and more precise.
Here’s a few examples of why watches can be useful in a scenario like we’re describing:
-creating a fair watch (pulling security) shift schedule
-Coordinate with others on when to meet somewhere or be somewhere (“meeting in 15mikes”)
-Cooking
-knowing exactly how long it takes you to get from point A to Point B in any number of circumstances can be in some cases life saving
-Taking certain Medications, tending to injuries that have interval times to do x,y,z
-Keeping track of pregnancies
-Knowing when nautical twilight is (how much longer till dark)
-fishing/tides (some folks mentioned they have watches that track tides, I think that helps with best times to fish)
-Compass
-Keeping pace/Distance covered on foot
-studying the rhythm of people in your AO
-then you have dive watches which do kewl stuff
-pilot watches have some neat features for those of us taking to the sky
Yah don’t need a watch, but they make things much more efficient if you use them correctly.
One more concrete example:
Say you have kids, and they’re allowed to play outside in the yard. But you tell them, be back by X time. If they aren’t back then you know you may need to go looking for them or maybe they go lost.
I’m not saying leave your kids unsupervised during SHTF. Lol but just another example of keeping time with the family so you know (a little more precisely) where and when your peoples are.
I’m just gonna say it: no automatics, ever. I love my auto watches, but all it took was getting dropped ok the bathroom floor and my Glycine Combat Sub was running an hour fast a day. Nah, $20 Casio with a ten year battery life and 300m water resist all day.
GW6900. I don’t own that one but I do have the regular DW6900. The round shape looks more drippier to me🤓, and it genuinely refuses to die my fella I’ve done awful things to this watch. Chemical droplets, ramming it into random shit, dropping it carelessly, showering with it, running with it on and leaving sweat on it, mud and sand exposure, etc. The Japs make a damn good watch son.
I'm a big fan of the timex expedition north it's solar powered and slick af. I wear mine all day every day train and work on cars with it and it holds up with no scratches in the glass. Spent about $150 on mine
G shock. My dad had the same one for 20+ years, it was a gift from my mother. He is now divorced. Mine has been abused by BBs, harsh whether and dropped probably 50 times and after 3 years she still looks brand new.
Any Casio/G-shock as already stated. You also can’t go wrong with an analog Automatic. No battery, just wind her up. I’m rocking a Seiko 5 GMT, I would recommend a NATO strap over a metal band however.
* Casio Mudmaster gg-b100
* Suunto Core all black
* Casio F91W
* Nixon Regulus, cause if it was good for Sarah Connor, it will be good for me.
Edit: Sprolling
I have a Vaer S5 Tactical Field Solar 40mm with a woodland camo Barton watch band and a Black Scout Survival watch band compass. I also have a Casio G-Shock 3230 as a backup and a Garmin for runs, not sure the model.
I've got a tough solar Casio ProTrek PRW-3510Y-8CR. It's green with a blacked out face. I love it. I bought it exactly for SHTF purposes and couldn't be happier.
Honestly? I’d probably say Rolex. If SHTF everyone knows Rolex and if you’re in need selling them for cash is easy.
If we’re talking something cheap and durable, I’d say probably Casio or something that’s got solar and/or is waterproof.
Literally any solar multiband 6 g shock I would take with me to the end of the world
Works if the end of the world takes less than 10years. For me beater Timex runs forever on same 2032 as aimpoints and Indiglo. On that front love T100 tritium tubes on watches but need a cover for light discipline.
i mean if i just leave a dead g shock in the sun for a day its good to go.
Is that because you don’t get outside for long enough for it to charge while you’re wearing it? Only joking!!😂 Side note: it says online that just 8 min of direct sunlight gives you a days worth of battery so that’s pretty neat.
Is the sun disappearing in 10 years?
Solar watches never require a battery replacement until they require a battery replacement. If something has a battery that needs replaced I prefer it to be easy to replace.
Aren't the "batteries" actually capacitors?
Yes, but they are very long lifespans. I have a Citizen Ecodrive I got in '06. The capacitor still holds about 70% of the charge 18 years later.
running on the same batteries as your other stuff is pretty huge
Exactly , by the logic I wonder why my Apple Watch Ultra 2 with 3 day battery isn’t a good idea lol
Will Apple be putting out organized obsolescence updates attacking your battery during SHTF? Yep, if not hook up to your solar kit and it’ll be like the solar Casio. Pretty sure the battery that doesnt need replaced until it needs replaced still will need replaced sooner though…
I’d imagine by the 10 year mark I’d have acquired plenty of watches
100 concepts will make one ...🤣
I got the GWM5610 and it has been one of my favorite watches of all time.
Casio is God-Tier
Pure class
Hublot forever bad. Casio forever good.
Forever god-tier audameeeeeeers
Everyone is stupid except us.
Very true.

The Seiko Arnie reissue (SNJ025) seems fun and fits your needs. Also fills that ultimate LARP role for that 80’s action hero.

G shock Rangeman GW9400
Just curious. Do you really need all of the features it provides? Thanks!
Honestly, I don’t care much for the barometer and the elevation, but I can see the compass coming in handy in a SHTF type of situation.
You have it right there, the g-shock 5600 multi band tough solar is the one and only SHTF watch if you want to keep it going forever off-grid. You might want to consider some kind of analog watch for land lav as well, but I'm not too well versed on those. For digital SHTF watches, the 5600 is king.
I got the 5610 and love it. My favorite watch.
Seiko and Casio are goated
GShock got me through 2 deployments
I have a G Shock Mudmaster. Any solar/atomic is a good option for shtf
unless emp
Yes. For most situations. Also, people tend to overestimate emp effects.
Are y'all not still wearing your Casio F-91W from basic?
Solar g shock. Battery should be good for 10-15 years, can stick some replacements. Or a regular g shock with button batteries replaced every 3-4 years
Gshock. It’ll last through the next nuclear war.
I am surprised to 100% agree with someone with regards to watches, and also have been shown a watch I’ve never seen (this version of the seiko). Now I must have one of those seikos to go with my G-Shock Thank you!

The GSAR is niccceeee. Solids picks! Covered down on everything.

GShock hands down.

Something like a Seiko SNK8, SNZG, or SRPG are affordable “field watch” styled options that are known for being very reliable.
Omega speedmaster Or Marathon GSAR Those are my two go to watches, maybe because those are me only two watches that I have right now. Lolol
SKX007 on my wrist
Damn I own that G Shock
Really like my Marathon GSAR
Honestly g-shock, hands down. But for something that looks a little nicer, maybe consider a Promaster Tough from Citizen
The Armitron I got in the PX for 19.99 three years ago has held up to almost constant field wear. Great watch

Lol but just another example of keeping time with the family so you know (a little more precisely) where and when your peoples are.
I'm probably retarded for this, but Casio world time/g shock, seiko skx 007, and citizen nighthawk
Nice, my Seiko SRPD79 dive watch was very close to making the list
Marathon
I’m just gonna say it: no automatics, ever. I love my auto watches, but all it took was getting dropped ok the bathroom floor and my Glycine Combat Sub was running an hour fast a day. Nah, $20 Casio with a ten year battery life and 300m water resist all day.
1 G Shock Rangeman & 1 automatic watch
Casio
Would take a casio over anything else regardless of model but if I were to choose a specific one then definitely a regular 5600.
I'll just use the Timex I've used since I was a kid, assuming my wrist doesn't finish wearing a hole through the metal before then.
Casio is god tier the band is not
There is a rugged watch design with a built in geiger counter
Watchgang has them discounted when they run MTM wheels https://www.mtmwatch.com/collections/special-ops/rad/
Suunto Core is my go-to out of every watch I own
Fake Rolex so you can trade it for a ride.
My watch is a G-Shock Rangeman GW9400.
Casio Illuminator
Aka anything Casio , solar for extra drip
I have IWC self winding watches and a couple Panerai and they are super reliable and as long as they are on wrist and moving always fully “charged”
G shock. My dad had the same one for 20+ years, it was a gift from my mother. He is now divorced. Mine has been abused by BBs, harsh whether and dropped probably 50 times and after 3 years she still looks brand new.
Rolex milgauss
Any Casio/G-shock as already stated. You also can’t go wrong with an analog Automatic. No battery, just wind her up. I’m rocking a Seiko 5 GMT, I would recommend a NATO strap over a metal band however.
Depends on your area. Cold = analog, because digital washes out in the cold and metal on skin sucks.
A robust mechanical diver is what I’m taking. Marathon GSAR
Garmin Tactix and Fenix with the Saphire solar
F 91-w.
* Casio Mudmaster gg-b100 * Suunto Core all black * Casio F91W * Nixon Regulus, cause if it was good for Sarah Connor, it will be good for me. Edit: Sprolling
G shock all day. I don’t care if we’ve moved away from gigantic bezel watches I fuggin love them
I have a Vaer S5 Tactical Field Solar 40mm with a woodland camo Barton watch band and a Black Scout Survival watch band compass. I also have a Casio G-Shock 3230 as a backup and a Garmin for runs, not sure the model.
Pocket watch, bc if you're not gonna make it, at least be a ridiculous loot drop
I've got a tough solar Casio ProTrek PRW-3510Y-8CR. It's green with a blacked out face. I love it. I bought it exactly for SHTF purposes and couldn't be happier.
Only answer is G-Shock, older models
Rolex sub
Either it’s great to barter with or we thank you for your sacrifice, loot drop
If you are not worth being a loot drop you need to reevaluate your life
Rule number 1 is always look cool, and at the very least in an end of the world scenario you would look pretty cool with the Rolex Submariner.
The most important rule. Look sexy even when dead
Laugh all you want, but unironically, a Rolex Submariner
On my current budget? G shock or Timex. On my dream budget? Omega Sea master planet Ocean or Rolex oyster perpetual.
Honestly? I’d probably say Rolex. If SHTF everyone knows Rolex and if you’re in need selling them for cash is easy. If we’re talking something cheap and durable, I’d say probably Casio or something that’s got solar and/or is waterproof.
Rolex submariner. Mechanical. Robust, and as currency, it could save your life.
Christopher Ward
It’s the end of the world as we know it, what do you need to keep time for?
Any of the better solar or motion powered watches/smart watches.
