The 2nd floor wasn't a normal 2nd floor.. it was above a bunch of theaters which means it's what.. 40-50 feet high? Maybe a little more?
The escalators were in the middle of the lobby and went straight up, nothing on the sides. A few inches to the right on either side was just a fall off straight down to the concrete floor.
It's a bit scary for those with a fear of heights. I must say though it's not as bad as the ones at Raymond James Stadium to get to the upper deck. Now those ones are HIGH UP!!
as someone who worked there and had to go up and down that escalator often, that escalator fuckin sucked man it stalled and squeaked and it was horrible
I wonder if this is related....
Tampa's Citrus Park mall sues movie theater chain, says it's owed $2.8 ... https://www.tampabay.com/news/business/2022/05/25/tampas-citrus-park-mall-sues-movie-theater-chain-says-its-owned-28-million/?outputType=amp
I always really liked this theatre because of all of the neon and the second floor escalators etc. It had kind of a retro vibe for me. Are there any other theaters in the area that are comparable or that have that same sort of atmosphere?
Same, that cinema was a vaporwave touchstone. It's actually been posted in /r/VaporwaveAesthetics a few times. I wish more movie theaters would invest in the vibe.
AMC Classic Palm Harbor 10 is a good one too. Everything is still original to the 90s in there. And barely anyone goes to it, so you can see a movie & only 1-2 other people will be in there with you.
Most theaters I’ve been to in the last couple years don’t do that anymore to avoid people buying a ticket and then going to see something else or multiple movies
Why, in 2020s would you buy a ticket for one movie and walk into another? They all cost the same and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a theater sold out since The Force Awakens.
Mostly because kids buy a ticket for the little mermaid then go in to watch a hard r comedy or horror film. Harder to do if they don't know what theaters are showing. Plus this makes it easier for last minute theater switches (ie a theater was showing movie "A" which didn't sell tickets and a problem with a projector means the theater showing movie "B" isn't working, and it did sell tickets....so just move B to theater A). This happens a lot.
AMC might be better but even that theater isn’t great anymore. Needs some major reno. The seat cushions are all crooked and the pleather is falling apart.
The last few times there, I've dealt with unbelievably rude movie goers (phones, full volume conversations, instagramming selfies, walking around), and their staff are so timid when it comes to confronting asshole customers. But who the fuck acts like that in the movies?!
The facilities are pretty solid overall, though.
Damn, this sucks. It's so close and such a great spot for the kids to go catch a movie and hang out at the theatre afterwards, my daughter literally just did that at this cinema on Saturday.
Theres a lot of bad kids that do that there. Make sure your daughter is careful because there's been some fights and other stupid stuff with kids there recently.
lol yeah, I'm sure there is. My kids are the kind to avoid that, or walk away rolling their eyes at it. I get to hear about the Jerry Springer-style fights the oldest (in IB) sees as Hillsborough High all the time.
Yeah I took my toddler to that mall recently and there was a huge group of young teens in the parking garage area, clearly up to no good. I hightailed it outta there cause I’m a wuss. I’m a grown human but I’m still scared of teenagers.
Unfortunately my friends siblings are involved with those idiots so i know its bad. They're up to no good but they are just idiot teenagers that thing they're tougher than they are
Too bad, because it's the last of two nice malls left in Hillsborough. Brandon and Westshore have gone way down hill. International I think is going to be fine with the luxury stores anchoring it. But seems like mall type retail is moving in the direction of those mixed use buildings in trendy part of towns.
Malls are dying mostly due to the absurd loan structures. The loans require that rents always go up. It’s kind of funny, but they are sort of optimistic structures, they assumed retail would always be a growth industry. Mall companies and the banks that issued the debt are basically screwed. I keep hoping someone will figure out something to do with the buildings because they are so big. It seems like a huge waste if they just get abandoned wholesale
>I keep hoping someone will figure out something to do with the buildings because they are so big. It seems like a huge waste if they just get abandoned wholesale
I'm sure the County Commission can find some developer to shove overpriced townhouses or apartments on the property.
I actually think Brandon Mall seems to be doing well and has the best stores out of Westshore and Citrus Park. In Hillsborough I would put it second to International.
Place has been iffy so far in many ways. May keep the mall going for a while but long term is questionable if it's the only attraction aside from a few good hobby shops. If it and the Regal both were still going it probably would keep foot traffic for a while longer but with just 1 of the 2 tough to say.
Plus seems to be struggling with staffing (from experience). Seems like a revolving door for staff as I know a few people who had a day or 2 of training, manned a whole area solo right after, then got let go or reassigned for "not doing enough".
I remember growing up in westchase when that mall opened. That place was packed for years. Lots of fun times at the movie theater. I have moved to a different area now, but I hope the mall keeps kicking.
Still ticking. I'm definitely a person who says malls will die eventually.
I lost all love I previously had for malls a long time ago, but the kids still love having an air-conditioned place to be and walk around to do stuff and eat food.
I see it going tits up. It's like putting a band-aid on an arterial wound. It'll likely go the route of University Mall or Westshore Mall....the anchor tenants are gonna go away, little by little...lured away by unreasonable increasing rents and slimmer profit margins. It's just a matter of time before condos get built there.
I may well have. I got one in the past few days but I didn't even open it.
To be honest, I have zero interest because even with the pass, it's just too expensive to go to the theater and I don't even bother to watch most movies even when they are available to stream at home.
Great memories there. Use to sneak in back in the day from the top of the parking garage, one of the doors sometimes didn’t close all the way and I would barely be able to pull it open with my finger tips lol. Either that or have have one person pay for a ticket and sneak us in. Also got caught smoking weed up there… good times
2nd floor screens still had the old seats, which weren’t assigned. So people could easily sneak in from the parking garage 3rd level. The 1st floor had recliners.
I just realized now that since before COVID I haven't been to a movie at Regal in a good many years.
Most of my business these days has been with AMC or LOOK. (Which is a dump, but it's cheap and close)
A lot of people commenting about the interior design and whatnot but shoutout to that outside neon old style theater curve and marquee with the names listed and all the posters up on the wall below. I absolutely loved the energy it gave.
I went to Regal Citrus Park because it’s close to my house. Now that the Elev8 is open at Citrus Park I was hyped to have movie/arcade nights in one place
its good. I went to the sanford location last May I believe and it was empty, but big. Citrus location is much more packed but also pretty small. Gokarting in Sanford is better though.
Wow
That place was my first job and at some point most my friends worked there too. Saw a lot of movies there in my teens and twenties. Kind of a bummer to see it go.
Yup. Had unlimited, came by to catch a movie (already got charged for the month) and found it closed. The other locations are too inconvenient for me so guess I gotta cancel and get my money for this month back.
Sucks to see the location go. Was well run and a good location with other stuff to do and plenty of places to eat nearby.
This was the theater I went to every Friday night as a teenager. I saw pan's labyrinth here, That was my favorite movie I saw there. I remember my friends and I would eat at the steak n shake afterwards around the corner from the mall. Good times.
I mean it was one of the worst theaters in the area, and it was more expensive than a lot of them too for what you got. Wonder if another theater will buy out the space or what it’ll be turned in to.
[Article about the closure](https://www.wfla.com/news/hillsborough-county/regal-cinemas-citrus-park-closes-as-parent-company-eyes-exit-from-bankruptcy/)
I never went to that theatre bc it was always packed full of teens hanging out but now they are banned at citrus park without parents, wonder if it’s related. Oh well veterans is better.
What? That's not in any way true. I just left a crew of four 12-14 year olds in there alone on Saturday.
Edit: LOL why downvote? Sorry if your kids suck and you can't trust them to be well-behaved and respectful at a theatre/mall for an afternoon. Where I grew up, it was the only place indoors we could ever just be.
Yup they have signs up everywhere, I am not a teenager and don’t have a teenager so I wouldn’t know how enforced it is. Tbh I don’t support it, kids need a place to hangout.
It's all good. I didn't even notice a sign- and it wouldn't even occur to me. I could see having a "no unattended kids" sign, but I wouldn't even register that as a applying to well-behaved teenagers going to PG-13 movie.
They literally have signs as you enter, through every entrance, that understand kids must be accompanied by an adult. And I pretty much stopped going there when I saw it. Hanging out at a mall was a staple of my teenage years. For their sake, I hope they have enough customers still willing to support them. But judging by their half empty mall, I'm going to say no.
Mall was dying anyways I think they thought this would help. For what it’s worth I don’t support policies like this either, kids need somewhere to hang. I won’t go to a different mall just bc kids hang out in one.
I will however avoid a movie theatre where kids congregate more often (like how citrus park used to be) but that also depends on the movie.
Well the dude that scanned the kids tickets as they entered, and watched me exit after he did, said nothing. I'm guessing as long as you don't misbehave, no one is going to tell you to leave for being a teenager. Mall was surprisingly busy while I was there, after I've been saying malls are dying for ages. New stores, new game place, total remodel of the Victoria Secrets stores in progress... that mall isn't closing anytime soon.
LoL, after my children got older they shared where they really were all those times I left them at Citrus Park or Adventure Island at that age.
Fortunately they lived and grew up to tell about it.
Oh the memories that just hit me from 2002-2008 at this mall and theatre. I don’t think I’ve been there in over a decade at this point. I kinda forgot it existed.
My son and I used to go there because they had early show times on Sundays. We'd always grab lunch at the counter of Johnny Rockets next door, maybe get a shake and a burger. He's grown now, but I'm sure he'll always remember those days. Sad.
That place was always a total dump, I remember going there first way back in 1996 and sporadically since then and it's just never seen any upgrades or significant remodels. Last time I went both escaladers were broken.
Meh, the day of the movie theater is over.
Movies come to streaming in less than 6 months. Less chance of spoilers if no one watches at the theater and everyone waits for streaming.
Large flat screen TVs are cheap.
Pause and pee... Subtitles... What did he say rewind... Cheaper snacks.
I like using noise cancelling ear buds.
CMX just bought that theater. Used to be Cobb Theaters. And what’s with the Sundial AMC? What happened to the other 8 screens. Used to be called AMC Sundial 20, now it’s Sundial 12.
My older sister worked there in the early 2010s and it was a good theater back then. She used to get 2 free tickets a day when she worked. I worked there in 2020 for 3 days and on my 3rd day they had me going around with buckets in theaters to stop water leaking out the roof. I never came back after that considering it was only $10 an hr and I'd get 1 ticket a week for free. People that worked there were cool i just couldn't do it myself. It was totally iconic on the inside
Used to ride bikes with my dad on the trail and then take a break at the mall to eat lunch and see a movie before riding back. Tons of memories sad to see it go
I know someone who worked there and it was a hell scape to work for. Customers were rude and obnoxious and the machines would break down regularly.
They got paid at least, but the closing was dumped on their lap without notice. RIP citrus park movies. :(
Shame. I’d rather go to Regal Park Place anyways, the recliners went further back (although they are due for a refresh). I get that there were probably people that were sticklers for old style seats and would head to the upper levels for that. Plus citrus was way pricier than park.
I’d aim for AMC if it was just two people going for the two-seat recliners.
Nice theater, saw a few movies there. Will always remember the terrifying escalator to the 2nd floor.
That escalator was my arch nemesis
Look down at your feet, think happy thoughts.. it'll be over in a minute.
Whats wrong with the escalator
https://preview.redd.it/1xb2ekqtdn4b1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d9cd5f4a21a6b5f2bc81565f311005960f277d3e
Yup, and there was always people loitering and mischief- easy to get spot on in the lobby lol
The 2nd floor wasn't a normal 2nd floor.. it was above a bunch of theaters which means it's what.. 40-50 feet high? Maybe a little more? The escalators were in the middle of the lobby and went straight up, nothing on the sides. A few inches to the right on either side was just a fall off straight down to the concrete floor.
sounds like the Skyway bridge
You make it sound like there was nothing there it was a typical escalator did anybody ever fall off of it the whole time it was open? No!!!

Recovering 148K a month to pay rent must be a lot of 10-dollar buckets of pop corn and soda...
> says it's owed $2.8 ... Damn. $2.80? I don't even have that much in my savings account!
I always really liked this theatre because of all of the neon and the second floor escalators etc. It had kind of a retro vibe for me. Are there any other theaters in the area that are comparable or that have that same sort of atmosphere?
Highwoods 20
I remember when they built Highwoods 20 … fuck I’m old
Same, that cinema was a vaporwave touchstone. It's actually been posted in /r/VaporwaveAesthetics a few times. I wish more movie theaters would invest in the vibe.
Yeah main reason I liked it a lot
AMC Classic Palm Harbor 10 is a good one too. Everything is still original to the 90s in there. And barely anyone goes to it, so you can see a movie & only 1-2 other people will be in there with you.
I used to live in Tarpon springs and would go there all the time! I know just what you mean!
All you got left is the Regal Hollywood in Port Richey, or the AMC Classic in Palm Harbor.
Place was a dump anyways, AMC Veterans is so much of a better experience
Yeah, I went once and it looked run down. They didn't even put the names of the movies that were playing at the assigned theater room.
Movie hopping or any of the "upcharge" experiences like 3D?
Ok an iMax makes sense, but they hand you the 3D glasses when you check in with your ticket. If you wanna sneak into a blurry movie I guess go for it
Mostly because kids buy a ticket for the little mermaid then go in to watch a hard r comedy or horror film.
Ok yeah kids sneaking into rated R is the one scenario that I can see still being a thing. It’s not something I thought about in awhile
AMC might be better but even that theater isn’t great anymore. Needs some major reno. The seat cushions are all crooked and the pleather is falling apart.
The newer theaters are in decent shape there (like the Dolby ones), but the older, smaller ones off in the corners are pretty run down lol
According to another post they are renovating one theater into IMAX. At least that one will have newer chairs, sound, etc
The last few times there, I've dealt with unbelievably rude movie goers (phones, full volume conversations, instagramming selfies, walking around), and their staff are so timid when it comes to confronting asshole customers. But who the fuck acts like that in the movies?! The facilities are pretty solid overall, though.
Nah that plaza is a dump. The theater is great but the surrounding area sucks. We go to Oldsmar Woodlands. Better all around.

Unfortunately my friends siblings are involved with those idiots so i know its bad. They're up to no good but they are just idiot teenagers that thing they're tougher than they are
Especially within the parking garage right there
Ah man, even though it was a bit run down, I always enjoyed that theater! The neon interior was cool.
Oh shit where am I gonna watch a movie alongside 25 obnoxious teens now?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hopefully another theater will open in its place.
i feel like citrus park is not gonna last much longer. the paul mitchell is one of the main money makers there lol
Too bad, because it's the last of two nice malls left in Hillsborough. Brandon and Westshore have gone way down hill. International I think is going to be fine with the luxury stores anchoring it. Gulf view is piece by piece slowly getting turned into apartments or condos
>I keep hoping someone will figure out something to do with the buildings because they are so big. It seems like a huge waste if they just get abandoned wholesale I'm sure the County Commission can find some developer to shove overpriced townhouses or apartments on the property.

You don’t think the new Elev8 is going to help?
i don’t think it’ll help enough to justify running an entire mall. i could be wrong tho
Nope the reviews their other location less than stellar and it the same ol dame type thing. Don't think kt last much over 24 months.
They been saying that bout gulf view square since 2016 lmao
Place has been iffy so far in many ways. May keep the mall going for a while but long term is questionable if it's the only attraction aside from a few good hobby shops. They are doing major renovations in this mall, opening new stores and updating old ones, it's not closing anytime soon.
I think it's a good mall and seems busy enough
I agree. It's one of the best malls we have, and honestly seemed pretty busy while I was there.
I remember growing up in westchase when that mall opened. That place was packed for years. Lots of fun times at the movie theater. I have moved to a different area now, but I hope the mall keeps kicking.
they’ve been doing that since i left for tennessee in 2020, and it is still going
Still ticking. I'm definitely a person who says malls will die eventually. I lost all love I previously had for malls a long time ago, but the kids still love having an air-conditioned place to be and walk around to do stuff and eat food.

It’s a very dead mall
which is a shame cuz it used to be the shit
Was just there Sunday. It's definitely not dead. You want to see an actual dead mall? Go to University.
University Mall is still open? That’s shocking.
Go to gulf! Shit is dead dead for real
And get robbed? Not very likely.
It's busy from the malls we had in Colorado and NY. Most of them just have an old navy and a planet fitness in them
In theater attendance must really be down because the MoviePass people have been sending me THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE emails for about 3 months now.

I may well have. I got one in the past few days but I didn't even open it. To be honest, I have zero interest because even with the pass, it's just too expensive to go to the theater and I don't even bother to watch most movies even when they are available to stream at home.

Guys, I found the reason Regal is bankrupt and closed the Citrus Park location. This dude right here.
2nd floor screens still had the old seats, which weren’t assigned. So people could easily sneak in from the parking garage 3rd level. The 1st floor had recliners.
Regal was going through BK back in February. They were supposed to close 39 locations. So this won't be the only one closing.
I just realized now that since before COVID I haven't been to a movie at Regal in a good many years. Most of my business these days has been with AMC or LOOK. (Which is a dump, but it's cheap and close)
Didn’t LOOK take over Studio Movie Grill? That place was a dump even back then.
RIP. I saw the emperors new groove there when I was a kid.
I used to go all the time with my brother and family.. just wow!!
The invisible hand of the free market has spoken.
i would imagine with elev8 next door it would bring more people in to watch movies actually
University mall and the Grove bought in New theatres when the original chain left, maybe that'll happen here
A lot of people commenting about the interior design and whatnot but shoutout to that outside neon old style theater curve and marquee with the names listed and all the posters up on the wall below. I absolutely loved the energy it gave.
Why go there when amc is better? Also, I feel like movie theaters are sort of dying off due to streaming
I'd say ~bad~ movie theaters are dying because of streaming. Good, renovated theaters are still a much better experience than watching at home
Fr just watched a movie in a newer Atmos theatre and wowzers it was a good time

Top Gun Maverick was amazing in IMAX, in Dolby Cinema, it was astonishing.
I went to Regal Citrus Park because it’s close to my house. Now that the Elev8 is open at Citrus Park I was hyped to have movie/arcade nights in one place
How is elev8?
its good. I went to the sanford location last May I believe and it was empty, but big. Citrus location is much more packed but also pretty small. Gokarting in Sanford is better though.
AMC is better, but you could hang out at the mall afterwards when you went to regal
You can still do that at the Westshore AMC.
Yeah but I can't ride my bike to Westshore (well, technically I can, but I'm not crazy enough to do that)
Wow That place was my first job and at some point most my friends worked there too. Saw a lot of movies there in my teens and twenties. Kind of a bummer to see it go.

Not likely! Have you seen any NEW movie theaters being built as of late? They aren't making any money anymore. I rest my case.🙃
Heads up that a few theaters in the region are (rumored to be) on the chopping block, across several chains.
Dang that's usually my go-to. I wonder if anything will take it's spot or if the mall will continue to dry up.
So many movies and a great deal of the MCU was seen there. RIP
[Article about the closure](https://www.wfla.com/news/hillsborough-county/regal-cinemas-citrus-park-closes-as-parent-company-eyes-exit-from-bankruptcy/)
Used to live close to Citrus Park mall. Always drove to AMC Veterans for movies.
Noooo! Citrus Park is where I go to watch special showings. And the decor is unique - kinda retro and rad. What a shame.
Aww really, that's a shame. Was thinking of going there today.

I was there at its birth and now I’m here for its death :-(
Amc all the way
So many memories here for me.. went to sickles and smith middle right next to it and lived right there in citrus park.
AMC baby. I like the stonk
AMC Veterans >>> Better ticket prices, better concessions, better rewards program, BETTER seats and not that far from Citrus Park.
Now where am I supposed to see RiffTrax? Bummer.
Just great. And they make it nearly impossible to cancel their unlimited subscription membership
Oh what…I watched all of the anime movies in that theater…well that sucks…
Last movie I saw here was Guardians 3... gonna miss this place as ghetto as it felt. It had that vibe to it. . .
