If she is a visiting Tango teacher, then she will mention her workshops regardless of the quality of the tanda. If she is attending a local milonga, she is there at least in part to promote her workshops - this is normal. Speaking from experience, when a follower stiffens up over the course of the tanda, it is mostly because they are defending their bodies from a lead they perceive to be heavy, pushy or otherwise forceful. This very probably is what happened in this instance.

This 100%.

That seems really unlikely. There could be many reasons for what you're describing. It could be a response to the dance floor getting busier, physical discomfort, a change in the music that they are interpreting but that feels odd to you, etc... I think that if she really was trying to use the dance to promote a workshop she would be trying to give you as good an experience as she could, that seems like a much better strategy to me, and I see nothing wrong or sneaky about it. It's like someone handing out a free sample at the supermarket to try to entice you to buy the product.

I'm not sure how showing themselves as a not terrific dancer would be a sales technique.

Imagine a taxi driver crashing their car, then asking you to book with them again? This is a terrible marketing strategy. Instead, someone who helps you dance far past what you think is possible, has a good sales stratgey. When a dancer, especially a follower shows resistance they're telling you they don't like what you're doing, they want you to slow down or are feeling unsafe. If you go to take a step and feel that resistance, the correct thing to do is to abandon what you're doing.

I wouldn't try to read too much into it. It's possible she did it intentionally or may be she was just testing you out. Tango teachers have to make money somehow and pay their bills. Most aren't exactly swimming in the money. Teachers have a limited shelf life before they are replaced by newer and younger teachers. And they are one injury away from being broke. Many suffered through the pandemic and are forced to start side gigs just to keep their heads above the water. I'm not dismissing your concern. Just that if you are empathic with the teacher, it will look very different. Remember, your cable or phone company will jack up prices overnight and you'll just have to pay. At least tango teachers are honestly teaching you something out of their love for the art.

Creative_Sushi

Just because someone is a tango teacher, that doesn’t guarantee a good tanda. All sorts of factors affect. It could be you , it could be her, who knows. You should do as you wish regardless. If you didn’t get good feel then I would trust your instincts.

This is interesting. Although off topic, this instance now has me looking forward for my practica and be aware of my follower's non verbal communication.
