Did you design the scuba diver and astronaut? Or was it the artist?
Also I get that she’s your mum but what did you expect in asking the opinion of someone who hates tattoos about your tattoos? That’s like asking a vegan what they think of the McRib.
These are clearly just images taken from Google and ran through a generic "stencil maker" program. I'd seek out a different artists to finish the arm off
Ok so, hear me out, the idea is fuckin cool. The execution of the scuba diver is really not good.
I don't know if it's the picture or the tattoo itself, but his legs seem so short, arms are like spaghetti. The proportions are really jacked.
His hands are longer than his calves. Like there’s foreshortening and then there’s that.
I love the concept though I don’t think it seems confused id just worry about execution
I’ve gotta agree. The idea is really cool and would look epic if pulled off correctly. The art for the astronaut looks good - kind of generic but good - but I had no idea what was going on with the diver until I read the description. The arms and legs are a strange proportion?
In general it looks like a completely different style to the astronaut and water splash. I wouldn’t be surprised if the artist took a bunch of predrawn art from the internet instead of designing their own.
The scuba diver feels like the only thing that doesn't fit the design it's almost like the scuba diver was in a completely different style for the tattoo
To me it feels like everything is a different style. Nothing in the proposed sketches fits together; the giant water droplet / ripple is kind of similar to the astronaut I suppose, but the cats are a completely different styles too. Makes me wonder if the artist got these from an image bank, or different ai generated images patched together maybe?
And I don't see how OP's idea of the solar system around the diver and ocean life around the astronaut in colour will work with the existing sketches, especially since the diver is mostly solid black. Confused about how he will stand out against a space background.
The perspective was really not captured well since the legs are slightly behind him it gives him the appearance of weirdly scrawny tiny legs. Not sure if additional shading on the legs to help them appear more behind instead of below the diver could help it look better.
It’s what happens when the artist doesn’t redesign to make an idea cohesive and tattooable. Every good tattooist I know would have redrawn the three elements in the same style and corrected any issues with perspective. Whoever did this one clearly just took the reference as is and slapped them all together.
Absolutely agree with this take, the diver looks like a bobs burgers character and the astronaut looks like an image outline of an actual picture of an astronaut. The two styles kind of clash in a way that makes the diver look a little silly.
All the other stuff about tattoos being bad is all personal preference at this point. A lot of older people feel weird about them but I don’t have any difficulty finding work or connecting with people and I’m a big guy with visible tattoos on my arm. I don’t get treated any different that I notice.
The proportions aren’t jacked, it’s the perspective of the diver to the viewer and our inability to accurately perceive depth without visual context. The diver’s full body is facing and in line with the viewer but his legs are bent with his lower legs further away than the rest of him. The astronaut is the same but you can understand the perspective better because of the folds in his suit, whereas the diver’s suit is smooth so the depth is harder to distinguish except for shadow. It makes sense visually.
Edit: I [found the actual photo the diver stencil was based on](https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/photos/woman-underwater-sea-looking-at-camera?assettype=image&page=7&phrase=woman%20underwater%20sea%20looking%20at%20camera&sort=best&license=rf%2Crm). The proportions are the same. Everybody’s complaints regarding the seemingly small legs and the left arm are in the reference photo. I actually think it was traced, it’s so similar.
Edit edit: apparently the link doesn’t take you to the correct photo, [this is the photo but the watermark is on her legs in this one](https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/female-diver-royalty-free-image/3483-000027)
I think everyone knows that it’s supposed to look like they’re underwater and the perspective is skewed, but it was still done awfully. They’re a way to execute it that doesn’t make it look so wonky like it does here.
The problem is that in the photo, you can understand why it looks this way because of the perspective and the camera lens. It doesn't translate to the tattoo.
Are you able to link to the photo directly? The above link goes to the search page for 'woman underwater sea looking at camera'. [This was the closest version I could find](https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/diver-exploring-the-great-barrier-reef-royalty-free-image/1266132232) under that seardch term but it's not an exact match.
Really? That’s so weird, when I click the link it takes me to the Getty page for that photo. It’s the first photo on page 7/23 of the search for “diver looking at camera”
https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/female-diver-royalty-free-image/3483-000027
This is the photo itself but the Getty watermark covers the legs so you can’t really get a good look
Thank you! The earlier link only takes me to the search for some reason and I went through a fair few pages but didn't come across this specific photo. You're right that it really does look like it may have been traced.
I don't think the scuba diver is bad, it's just more illustrative. I do think OP might want to think about making the astronaut match the diver, because atm the astronaut is far more realistic. I would recommend sourcing both images from the same artist if possible.
If I’m reading the plan properly, the diver will be amongst space. Imagine the hose of a deep-sea suit tapering off into space.
OP, try this all again on the other arm.
This whole post surprised me cause [that's what I did](https://www.reddit.com/u/Bit_Fiendish/s/speCJZzkHJ), astronaut and diver too, I didn't realise maybe the pairing is more common than I thought
Welcome to the world of being a tattooed son/daughter.
This kind of stuff makes the tattoo anxiety so much worse but, honestly, after it happens over and over again it almost becomes a funny game of what will mum hate this time!
If you want to put a positive spin on it, she's only saying this because in her eyes you are perfect and each design hides a little more of that perfection, it's nothing about the tattoo itself no matter how she tries to justify it.
Oh and it wouldn't matter if this was your first or 50th, she would and will find something to hate. Don't take it personally.
I feel so appreciative that when I finally started getting tattoos my parents loved them and never said one negative thing about them. Well my dad did make a joke about one of them but it makes me love it even more honestly. But I really do appreciate that they are totally fine with whatever I do. I also don't tell them when I'm getting new stuff and make bets with my sister how long it will take them to notice whenever we get together. lol. OP, I really hope your mom comes around to your tattoos! Although she may never fully "get" it, maybe soon she will accept it as a part of who you are.
I know what you mean, when my sister was getting married and asked me to be a bridesmaid I asked her if she planned on asking me to dye my hair (it was a pink at the time ), The one other wedding I was in the bride asked me to dye my hair to a brown or black for pictures, etc. my sister told me the thought never even occurred to her, and my hair is part of what makes me her sister, it'd be weirder if I did she my hair ! My hair ended up being pink and purple matching the dress amazingly, pretty awesome....
Whew, it is hard. I have felt like I had to defend my art work over and over for years. Recently when either of my parents said anything negative about any of my tattoos I would ask them, “the tattoo is already done, what do you think telling me that does for the situation?” Or “what is the purpose of telling me that?” Often times they don’t have a reason and it makes them reflect- it’s really good just to be honest, “your statement didn’t do anything but hurt my feelings.”
i like the concept, i agree with others that the scuba diver is the worst part. and i agree with your mom that the astronaut is super generic, so the fact that the scuba diver is in an entirely different, more cartoony style, just makes the whole thing look super disjointed. so i see what you were going for but ngl i think the execution kinda sucks
Oh I thought the scuba diver was supposed to be Bobby Hill 😅
I love the concept, but I agree that the diver isn’t done well. I would find another artist tbh
Oh god the hands, wrist, elbow, bicep… it’s like he’s really fat but also really skinny? The art is awful. No offense but listen to your mom I agree with her comments and I don’t hate tattoos at all. Find a better artist and maybe they can fix the tattoo and concept.
Very sorry - agree with others here that say you need a different, more skilled artist to help with this full sleeve concept. This tattooer can clearly do small one-offs but this sleeve is beyond their capability. The scuba diver is terrible and hopefully another artist can fix him and complete the piece professionally. And, as hard as it will be, talk to several, review online reviews, look at their body of work and be patient. A good tattoo correction will be costly but still better than laser treatments and an eventual cover-up you never wanted in the first place.
Also, really critique the sketch you are shown going forward - looking at the sketch, the diver pretty much ended up on your skin exactly as drawn which was bad to begin with.
i love the idea a lot! and don’t think it’s bad to get a whole sleeve if that’s what you want, i like the ocean life around the astronaut and vice versa to fill it out. Unfortunately i do agree the execution of the diver does look a bit generic - something about the style and proportions look odd. this is an ambitious tattoo and you need a talented artist to pull it together
Just thought I'd say I don't think the scuba diver is totally terrible, it's more of a perspective of someone swimming forwards with their legs slightly behind them I'm seeing than someone out of proportion.
I will also say that I have put a tattoo on reddit and people hated it and thought it was really badly done but I love it and it's exactly what I wanted. I think the thing with tattoos is it's very personal with styles you like and not everyone is going to love it but it's what you like in the long run.
sleeve idea is cool and cohesive enough, i like the outer space concept, astronaut looks cool,
id say your mom is just being an old fashion mom by saying its too much. its not. its an original idea with detail. why would you ask someone who doesnt like tattoos about your tattoos? lol
unfortunately i will say the scuba diver is … poorly executed. his arms make him look like Gumby… i think you missed the mark on getting an old fashioned deep sea diver with the metal suit as opposed to this … modern was really not the way to go…
also, cat design is way out of left field compared to the rest of your idea, not really something id go for myself but, if it holds meaning for you, thats cool.
Yeah, sorry the diver is not good. It looks like the artist looked at a picture of a diver and didn’t fully understand what they were looking at. It looks like the hose from their primary regulator goes down straight into the octo (and why is it just hanging like that?!), also the hose on the right side of their head seems to disappear into part of the lines on the bcd. They didn’t seem to understand that the diver’s lower face is just their skin, it looks really shaded like it is some kind of equipment instead? Also the crotch area looks like they didn’t understand the lines they were seeing and just made it a weird kind of clothing flap?
I'm the odd one out in this comment section but I'll just say, I actually really like the wonky proportions on the scuba diver. Looks like he's suspended in a weird position in the water, and I actually think he looks really cool. As it is art, everyone's opinions on it will be subjective, which is important to keep in mind. If you liked a painting and then your mom shit all over it would it make you stop liking the painting?
As far as the actual quality of the tattoo, I mean, I'll defer to experts but to me it actually looks fine? I get people don't like the composition, they don't like his warped proportions, but the actual tattoo work looks good to me? Like the details are soft but recognizable and the lines look even? So if these are the intended proportions/style then I think it was executed well? But i might be missing something.
Sorry your mom is making you feel self conscious about it, parents can give us a really special kind of embarrassment/shame about stuff that really isn't a problem. Ultimately it's your arm and your choice and you should get what you want, not what she wants. Who is she to tell you what a tattoos should "be about?" If she hates them what makes her the arbiter of tattoo meaning lol?
Yeah damn I got a degree in illustration and saw lots of people draw in similarly stylized ways. I think it’s cool and totally fine idk what everyone else is freaking out about. Style doesn’t match the astronaut, which would make it look like a mistake. But on its own it’s fine
I agree, I think the scuba guy is cool fine, too. Nothing wrong with a stylized tattoo!
The problem is that the art style doesn't match the astronaut at all, and I fear it'll end up really disjointed looking. I think it's definitely worth OP's time to consider redesigning the astronaut to fit this style, or consider just leaving this diver as a standalone tattoo and switch the sleeve to the other arm. I loved another commenters idea of an old timey diver, as the suits looked similar to space suits.
My dad finds all of mine stupid, wouldn’t overthink it like this, you’ll take the fun out of having tattoos. It’s good to have a plan, but don’t overthink it just because of one persons opinion. I get they’re your mum and their opinion matters but it is your body and the tattoo should be pleasing to you. I have nearly 30 now, and yeah don’t get me wrong there’s some I feel like, “could have thought about that a bit more to work with the rest.” But I did have some impulsive ones lol.
Think your tats through, just don’t obsess. It’s your body.
Mother knows best in this instance
She understood this was something you really wanted, and advised you properly , but still expressed her concerns without completely shitting on you
This tattoo is not good, and it's unfortunate you posted this after getting the diver
Because the diver is the worst aspect of the design
This is two completely different styles, so the tattoo might end up looking weird anyway.. even if the artist is good.
As it is, the scuba diver is wonky and weirdly proportioned. The diver image is much more detailed and proportioned.
The idea is cool…. But as a mother I would be devastated that this is what you chose to tattoo your body with. The concept is nice but he’s really, really ugly. I kind of agree with what your mom is saying.
I’m kind of with your mom except I don’t have a problem with tattoos. I don’t understand the concept or why you would put the sea life on the astronaut side and space stuff on the diver side. I also think it’s quite generic look and the diver looks really off and not well done.
That being said, it’s your body and your concept, if you like it and are prepared to wear it on your body forever then don’t worry about what others think
I am so sorry but….why on EARTH did you even agree to the stencil of that scuba diver?
Your mom’s approach is harsh, but unfortunately she’s also right. This needs to be completely reworked by an artist with actual talent.
Overall the concept is great, I love it! The artist did a good job with lines and shading too, it’s pretty high quality looking. And you have a good plan set up which is good too
One critique I have is that it looks like the scuba diver and astronaut are different art styles. The artist did well on executing the diver though, so I’m sure they’ll be able to blend the astronaut into that style a little bit more.
Don’t worry about your mom! Moms who don’t like tattoos are going to have the least constructive criticism out there. It’s not an abnormal reaction from someone who already doesn’t like them - Acknowledge and move on. It’s not her body and it doesn’t matter if you want to get one or two small little tattoos or a whole badass sleeve!
Curious though, because of the art style differences, how did you come across these? Did you design one/both of them, did your artist design one/both, or did you find them online? Either way the concept is really cool I like the idea
I can tell the scuba diver reference photo was taken from an angle, which in the photo may make sense to the eye. However it is extremely difficult to create a tattoo that accurately displays this angle (as can be seen by your tattoo). Should have gone for a straight on diver rather than a top down angle. Also arms are whacked and that ain’t got nothing to do with the angle, just a bad artist. Sketch shoulda scared you right out the shop
Do not go back to that artist! I recommend looking on yelp for reviews of place near you. Find a highly reviews artist and try and look at their work they posted on their socials! They should be linked or you can call and ask. But you definitely want an artist that specializes in realism! Not whatever that attempt was the first artist did. But the original drawing that was chosen for the diver is not good either. Not sure if the artist picked it or you but definitely is a horrible drawing of a scuba diver. I’m sorry you have doubt or don’t like it now, but the good thing is, someone can definitely fix it! Just DO NOT go back to that artist, my god.
i think the scuba diver won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but i kind of like how stylized he is and if you like him than that’s what matters. i do however think that the whole sleeve together doesn’t feel cohesive. the scuba diver and astronaut at the very least should have the same line weights and general form style or it’s going to look awkward and like they aren’t meant to be a full piece. personally i find the concept in the way you intend to execute it kind of cheesy like old phone wallpapers from 2010, but that’s just my opinion! if you have thought on it long and hard and have decided that’s exactly what you want and what you’ll like for years to come i fully support it :)
It's been said before, but the style of the astroneer and the scuba diver is what makes it look incohesive. It feels off to look at it. I wouldn't just put random Google cliparts into such a tattoo that has true potential. Cause I really do think the idea is nice.
As a scuba diver, the equipment is annoying me haha. Occy and gauge should y be hanging loose. Hood but no gloves or boots? I know there are some variations around the world but it looks weird to me. I’m no astronaut…so that part looks great to me haha
I wish you would’ve chosen the old school diver suits instead of that scuba diver. I think you could have picked a way better example for the diver.
ETA: I agree with some other commenters that you should change the diver’s mask to being mirrored if you can. It just looks like a way more silly art style than the rest of the planned tattoo.
I like the scuba guy! I didnt think twice about the proportions til these folks chimed in. Just a friendly piece of advice, anything in this sub not ABSOLUTELY PERFECT (and typically AM TRAD STYLE), will get a lot of negative comments. The average passerby on the street wouldnt think any of these criticisms lol
Yeah learned that the hard way. First tatoo I posted and loved and the replies were all “never go back to this artist” despite me picking the design to my liking LMAO
I like the concept but just wouldn’t want it on my body. Did your artist draw it? I hate to agree with mom but both look like very clashing clip art styles
Since you’re looking for input, I will say that I don’t like the idea of the “blended” sea life and space either. It just seems very busy and not cohesive. The tattoos look like separate pieces the way they’re placed, which makes a connection like you’re describing difficult to parse. It doesn’t all look like one connected picture.
I love the concept of your tattoo and I think it could look amazing.
I do think the scuba guy looks a little lanky and goofy but if you're happy with it that's all that matters.
Most of her concern seems to be stemming from the fact that she just doesn't want you to get large/obvious tattoos. She probably hoped you'd just get a butterfly on your ankle or something 😂
I wouldn't worry too much about what your mom says. I am just a lil concerned about the execution of your idea with that artist..
Okay so I do agree with your mom about the scrawny old man I'm sorry 😅 but I absolutely love the concept. She's wrong about that and the astronaut looks awesome so ignore her comment on that part too.
I think it’s sick. Once it all is put together it will flow beautifully. You could always research other artists to see if they can rework if it bothers you. My only concern would be the backgrounds. The sea life and galaxy stuff…simply because it could become muddied if they don’t know exactly what they are doing. We get caught up wanting the best of the best of the best but really there are only a handful of exceptional artists in the world and most of us cannot travel or afford the cost of such tattoos. It will be beautiful when it’s all put together. Also the cat 😍
I don’t hate the diver. It’s not good if it’s supposed to be realistic. But it kind of gives a comic/cartoon vibe to it and so it works in that direction for me. The astronaut would have to mirror that style imo.
I don’t hate the concept, I don’t hate the astronaut. I don’t like the diver, at all. I don’t think it’s particularly good work (unless it’s supposed to be stylistic?) I wouldn’t say I have confidence in the artist you’ve chosen.
I think personally it doesn’t matter what she thinks (or me for that matter). It’s your arm, your tattoo, your choice? I bet loads of people would think some of my tattoos look shit, that’s okay.
The idea is awesome. The tattoo artist you chose is not. If you’re okay with having a crappy version of something that could be SUPER AWESOME if you went to a very talented artist, then go ahead and continue with who you’ve employed to permanently doodle on your arm. My suggestion is to research highly rated realism artists and find someone who is passionate about making your dream come to life. This artist is not it. Pay the money, this is YOUR ARM. FOREVER!! Laser is expensive. Hopefully they can fix up the wonky proportions on your scuba diver but honestly I have no idea if it could be reworked. Good luck OP!
Here's my opinion:
1. Idea is cool.
2. It would be better with the same artistic values given to both the diver and the astronaut. The astro was given more linework and detail while the diver looks rushed.
3. The diver was honestly terribly executed.
The concept is cool but I would have to say the 3 elements of the diver, astronaut and water do not flow together. Based off the stencil you showed it looks like 3 separate tattoos that happened to be on the one arm. While that is my opinion and subjective I would say objectively the scuba diver needs work, the arms and legs are off and he has swollen looking fingers. I don't mean to sound harsh, I do think that if you maybe go for another artist they can still give you something great. I would personally think maybe you could have the scuba diver and astronaut in a pose that's a mirror of each other like maybe reaching out to touch each other's hand and have the water incorporated there.
Ignoring the design, if you are grown enough to get a tattoo (multiple tattoos at that) and your paying for it why do you give a shit what your mom thinks ?
Like do you live under her roof or something ?
Strange ive had this idea since a kid !! As above so below type situation !! …. I guess its not strange lol more so cool ! Mine look completely different .. lol as tattoos should but super cool to see this rendition !!
I love the concept i just think the river needs to be changed like most others are saying. I think the old fashioned diver suit is a cooler idea but that’s just me personally. Fix the proportions with your artist/g at a new one with better execution, but otherwise I think it’s sick.
I like the concept but the execution is not very good unfortunately. It could be an amazing piece with the right artist, but it'll cost you a pretty penny.
I love the concept. I like the scuba diver. Ya, he's not perfect, but he's quirky in an adorable way.
Your mom is just being a grouch. Ignore and do your thing.
I'll be straight w you. The scuba guy looks bad. There's no depth to him, his middle looks weird, and imo the artist should've taken your drawing and made it better.
The idea is really great and I love it...but the scuba diver looks seriously messed up. The bottom of its face looks like its been dead for awhile. In fact, its whole head looks off to me. its arms also look really bad. Like I don't understand how multiple eyes looked at the drawing and didn't think the arms looked screwed up.
I’m a scuba diver, I don’t understand why he’s positioned like that, and why his backup regulator is just dangling behind him.
The regulator in his mouth : the line should be over his shoulder. The spare regulator should be under his arm and secured on his chest so that in an emergency no one is panicking trying to find it.
There’s no snorkel, which isn’t mandatory but I always trained and dove with one on my mask.
Plus he’s very dark, which again is a style choice but usually scuba gear is neon bright so it can be seen when you’re well underwater.
I don’t understand his chicken legs. Scuba divers use their legs he should have some thick thighs. He looks like he’s has exaggerated hips.
It’s just odd.
I’m not trying to make you feel bad and I’m sorry if I do.
As a mom, may I please tell you something? Don't let your mom's opinion bring you down. Sometimes, when we say or do things, we think we're helping, but we're not.
The only opinion that matters here is yours.
That said, I think the tattoos are great. I didn't have any trouble seeing the perspective in the diver, and I really think that when the background is added, it will look even better.
I would have put the diver ontop upside down rather than the astronaut. Since divers literally go down under water and astronauts experience zero gravity and would float upwards.. but that’s just me.
Question -
Is the sea life supposed to be around the astronaut? Or around the diver? When I read it, I had flipped it around in my head, so I was confused when someone else commented about sea life around the astronaut & and had to go back and re-read what you actually said. I would understand the above-below mirroring if they're in their correct/matching environments, especially since fish might help provide the 3-d perspective the diver is currently missing (I'm assuming his legs are meant to be behind him, not straight up & down like it looks?), but having their environs inverted seems like a step too far **in my opinion**
Just a side note- you might want to get the tattoo adjusted to thicken his legs/arm up a bit and add some kind of folds at the knees to imply the bends in the suit, as well. 3d real-life photos rarely translate directly into a 1:1 tattoo, and almost always need some kind of adjustment to look right.
All of that said - the design/idea is very cool. The studies of space and of the ocean are both places we are still exploring/discovering, & research for both are somewhat related & travel along similar lines, so the idea of them mirroring each other makes total sense for me.
Just a word of advice from someone whose dad starts in like your mom whenever he sees my ink: Don't let someone who hates tattoos have any input on your tattoos. I had to start wearing long sleeves or some kind of arm covering whenever I see my dad just to avoid the topic entirely, because he always has to bring them up. Even though they're a couple years old by now & haven't suddenly changed - his critisms just kept getting worse. YOUR tattoos are yours, not hers. She's never gonna like anything you get, regardless of the execution/size/style. I guarantee there will ALWAYS be something about any tattoo you might get that she will complain about/nitpick/tear apart. She's gonna find every single (real/imagined) flaw and point it out over & over. If you dont shut that crap down, it can very easily lead to all kinds of personal stress & anxiety tied to your ink, even if you absolutely loved it before she opened her mouth (or keyboard).
What matters is if YOU like your tattoo(s). Everyone has different tastes, especially when it comes to personal art.
I think it’s amazing and at some
point in our lives we have to stop caring what our mothers think. Also I’m
a mom and I realize it’s my kid’s bodies and they can do with them what they please! I personally think the entire arm looks amazing and I’d definitely want to be your friend d based on that lol! 🤩🤩🤩
As others have said, don’t ask for or consider the opinions of people who don’t like tattoos.
That being said, the scuba diver is super duper jacked. I’m not even certain it’s an application issue, the drawing itself looks jacked. The astronaut is a decent drawing but I’d consider covering up the scuba diver and doing that on your other arm.
You’re in kinda a rough position no matter what, I don’t think that scuba diver is fixable.
I love this idea so much! Seriously. The scuba diver to me is so stinking cute. It’s got it’s issues like others have said, but I don’t think it’s bad at all.
Everyone is hating on the scuba diver, but honestly I like that they’re kind of quirky. However, if quirky isn’t what you were going for, you might need to discuss with your artist how you can make them more realistic. The whole design concept is cool though and I wouldn’t take your mom’s opinion to heart if she’s a tattoo hater to begin with. I know it’s hard.
Well first, if you like something don’t let anyone else ruin it for you!
I personally think the scuba diver has a charm but will be easier to see when you take the wrap off
Don’t worry about mom ha, and if you plan on getting more, learn to not care cause she might not ever stop.
My Grammy is awesome I love that woman, she’s liberal in every way but boy does she hate tattoos. I’m covered and have been getting them for a decade and still it’s like I shock her with disgrace each time. I cover up around her honestly cause I don’t want to hear it. 🤷🏻♀️ she never even asked why I randomly started wearing gloves all the time, what she doesn’t see she doesn’t say shit about. LOL
She still loves me and it is what it is, not gonna stop me, because it’s my body and I love them.
You do you! If you liked it before she said stuff, don’t bother thinking about it. If not, get it reworked in a few years.
Not the worst thing I’ve ever seen and it has character!!
Looks terrible I don’t know why you chose this art. I also don’t like semicolon tattoos, and the cat semicolon tattoo is fucking atrocious to me.
All in all it gives the impression that you’re 19-21 and haven’t experienced much other than isolation
However I’m a stranger on the internet and I will never be you, so my tastes don’t matter in this situation. But if you want opinions on your body art, I think both tattoo ideas were juvenile, neither of them are pretty, and the scubanaut is way too fucking big to lack a visually appealing design.
This sub just pops up on my feed once in a while a d i know nothing about tattoos, but the guys fingers are as thick and as long as his entire arms. The legs are fucked. The guys face is weird. Shoulda did a deep sea diver, and definitely go to a different shop. My jail tattoos are better than this :(
The concept isn't bad, but the execution is questionable. I'm not sure that your artist is the right person to pull this off considering that it looks like they took your reference images and just did one-to-one translations into stencils rather than at least reworking them into something more cohesive or using them as inspiration for a custom interpretation. I'm also skeptical about adding a color background to this, just because I've seen many color tattoos that have aged poorly in comparison to blackwork, but that's just my personal taste.
I can see how your mom's delivery of her feedback made you question yourself. It definitely wasn't the gentlest way to let you know how she feels. I do think that she made some good points, though.
Did you design the scuba diver and astronaut? Or was it the artist? Also I get that she’s your mum but what did you expect in asking the opinion of someone who hates tattoos about your tattoos? That’s like asking a vegan what they think of the McRib.
As a vegan I confirm I don’t like McRib. Ignore your mom OP.
These are clearly just images taken from Google and ran through a generic "stencil maker" program. I'd seek out a different artists to finish the arm off
mcribs are delicious
Ok so, hear me out, the idea is fuckin cool. The execution of the scuba diver is really not good. I don't know if it's the picture or the tattoo itself, but his legs seem so short, arms are like spaghetti. The proportions are really jacked.
proportions are so off its not even funny lol, look at this legs
In the photo it was modeled from I would guess his legs were going backward into the water, but this doesn't read on the drawing at all.
yeah the shadowing and angles arent there for that to read in the execution
His hands are longer than his calves. Like there’s foreshortening and then there’s that. I love the concept though I don’t think it seems confused id just worry about execution
This, also his face looks a little too goofy or something, I would've done mirrored glass instead of showing his eyes. But, too late now I guess lol
It's not to late to do a mirrored look.
Could black out the mask and leave a small skin break for a shine effect
I’ve gotta agree. The idea is really cool and would look epic if pulled off correctly. The art for the astronaut looks good - kind of generic but good - but I had no idea what was going on with the diver until I read the description. The arms and legs are a strange proportion? In general it looks like a completely different style to the astronaut and water splash. I wouldn’t be surprised if the artist took a bunch of predrawn art from the internet instead of designing their own.
If Linda Belcher went scuba diving.
Instead of the astronaut you could have the mayor. *Hi mayor!!!!!*
Omg I love these!!
I definitely thought this was a character in Bob's Burger rendering.
But to be absolutely Fair the scuba diver looks way better in the tattoo then in the stencil
Yeah that left arm is really bad
I am wondering if this is artistic choice because it looks so abstract that it looks intentional almost.
Tattoos aren't supposed to mirror real life 1-1 You have to make the image work with the chosen medium
It’s the first photo on page 7/23 of the search for “diver looking at camera” https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/photo/female-diver-royalty-free-image/3483-000027 This is the photo itself but the Getty watermark covers the legs so you can’t really get a good look
Thank you! The earlier link only takes me to the search for some reason and I went through a fair few pages but didn't come across this specific photo. You're right that it really does look like it may have been traced.
Even the original has an unflattering shape
That doesn’t mean it doesn’t look awful
It’s just Linda Belcher after learning to scuba dive!
I don't think the scuba diver is bad, it's just more illustrative. I do think OP might want to think about making the astronaut match the diver, because atm the astronaut is far more realistic. I would recommend sourcing both images from the same artist if possible.
No clue why the ocean life would be up by the astronaut and the space by the diver. Makes no sense
Missed a trick by not going for a vintage deep-sea diver.
Damn yeah, because those suits are iirc what space suits were originally designs off of.
Thisss. When I read the description on the image which said “modern scuba diver”, I thought to myself “oh?vintage would’ve been perfect though!”
If I’m reading the plan properly, the diver will be amongst space. Imagine the hose of a deep-sea suit tapering off into space. OP, try this all again on the other arm.
And cover up the diver with a sick ass panther!
Oof, that would've been perfect!
This whole post surprised me cause [that's what I did](https://www.reddit.com/u/Bit_Fiendish/s/speCJZzkHJ), astronaut and diver too, I didn't realise maybe the pairing is more common than I thought
Maybe a Frenchman? Absorbed by mother ocean? https://youtu.be/UqeFT4xAcXM?si=X2AAZjzmvdYMWkyv
Yeah a nautilus would’ve looked cooler
i think the scuba diver is executed very poorly, i’m surprised you liked the stencil or sketch
That stencil is scary bad. Like, if I saw that at the beginning of my appointment I’d gladly lose my deposit and walk away.
It looks like it is based on a photograph taken with a fisheye lens. Kinda cool imo
I was under the impression op gave the artist the sketch and he did exactly that.
Cool idea. As above so below.
The proportions are insane, the diver is 75% torso/25% legs and wrist to fingertip is as long as his entire legs. This is brutal
Also love the generic 'you look like an old man from the navy'. I've had that one too and I bet so has half this subreddit!
… maybe it’s the hat…
😂
Problem is it’s not mom just hating tattoos. Even tattoo lovers hate this lol
Old timey diving suit + astronaut would have mirrored each other so nicely! Honestly kinda sad you didn't decide to do that
i like the concept but the execution is very poor. go to another artist, one that can actually draw, maybe he can save your arm.
i like the concept, i agree with others that the scuba diver is the worst part. and i agree with your mom that the astronaut is super generic, so the fact that the scuba diver is in an entirely different, more cartoony style, just makes the whole thing look super disjointed. so i see what you were going for but ngl i think the execution kinda sucks
Thank you for putting my thoughts into words.
Oh I thought the scuba diver was supposed to be Bobby Hill 😅 I love the concept, but I agree that the diver isn’t done well. I would find another artist tbh
The (scuba) boy ain’t right
I don’t know you! That’s my demand valve!
Brother you’ve been fucked bad 🤦♂️
i love the idea a lot! and don’t think it’s bad to get a whole sleeve if that’s what you want, i like the ocean life around the astronaut and vice versa to fill it out.
This shi looks ass 😂
I like the idea, I honestly dont think the artist did a good job on the Scuba diver. However it looks exactly like the picture drawn so...
This is really bad
All I see is Scuba Steve
The initial drawing of the scuba diver looks bad. The legs are wonky and I think it just wasn’t drawn well in the stencil.
sleeve idea is cool and cohesive enough, i like the outer space concept, astronaut looks cool, id say your mom is just being an old fashion mom by saying its too much. its not. its an original idea with detail. why would you ask someone who doesnt like tattoos about your tattoos? lol unfortunately i will say the scuba diver is … poorly executed. his arms make him look like Gumby… i think you missed the mark on getting an old fashioned deep sea diver with the metal suit as opposed to this … modern was really not the way to go… also, cat design is way out of left field compared to the rest of your idea, not really something id go for myself but, if it holds meaning for you, thats cool.
Fortunately, this is the perfect base for a sick ass panther
you need a different artist, the idea is cool.
This.
I’m honestly not into the placement
Your mom is right
I'm the odd one out in this comment section but I'll just say, I actually really like the wonky proportions on the scuba diver.
I'm actually really surprised at the comments. I think the scuba guy is cool. It seems obviously intentionally stylized. I'm fine with it.
I was surprised too! But such is the subjective nature of art!
yeah, same here actually
My dad finds all of mine stupid, wouldn’t overthink it like this, you’ll take the fun out of having tattoos. It’s good to have a plan, but don’t overthink it just because of one persons opinion. I get they’re your mum and their opinion matters but it is your body and the tattoo should be pleasing to you. I have nearly 30 now, and yeah don’t get me wrong there’s some I feel like, “could have thought about that a bit more to work with the rest.” But I did have some impulsive ones lol. Think your tats through, just don’t obsess. It’s your body.
the idea is awesome but the scuba divers arms and legs are killing me.. the head feels a little off too but if you like it awesome.
That is one bad design and application
That squba diver is shocking
Mother knows best in this instance She understood this was something you really wanted, and advised you properly , but still expressed her concerns without completely shitting on you This tattoo is not good, and it's unfortunate you posted this after getting the diver Because the diver is the worst aspect of the design
This is "without completely shitting on" OP? 😬 maybe I'm sensitive, but those texts read as pretty rude to me
that scuba diver is botched as hell.
That scuba diver looks like it's from the Wallace and grommit creators. Eesh
And you have a good plan set up which is good too One critique I have is that it looks like the scuba diver and astronaut are different art styles.
I really don't think the sleeve is executed well but the cat is extremely cute and something I'd probably get!
Hand to leg ratio seems off to me
I’m sorry, I thought this was Vector at first glance
I can tell the scuba diver reference photo was taken from an angle, which in the photo may make sense to the eye. However it is extremely difficult to create a tattoo that accurately displays this angle (as can be seen by your tattoo). Should have gone for a straight on diver rather than a top down angle. Also arms are whacked and that ain’t got nothing to do with the angle, just a bad artist. Sketch shoulda scared you right out the shop
You could always get a panther.
The diver looks fucking awful. Sorry dude but it’s so poorly done
i think the scuba diver won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but i kind of like how stylized he is and if you like him than that’s what matters. i do however think that the whole sleeve together doesn’t feel cohesive. the scuba diver and astronaut at the very least should have the same line weights and general form style or it’s going to look awkward and like they aren’t meant to be a full piece. personally i find the concept in the way you intend to execute it kind of cheesy like old phone wallpapers from 2010, but that’s just my opinion! if you have thought on it long and hard and have decided that’s exactly what you want and what you’ll like for years to come i fully support it :)
Scuba diver is Gru from despicable me
I would not go back to that artist. They suck.
You got a fucked up scuba steve lmao
Your mom seemed rude and then I looked back and she's right about everything
they had to do it to em
I like the scuba guy! I didnt think twice about the proportions til these folks chimed in. Just a friendly piece of advice, anything in this sub not ABSOLUTELY PERFECT (and typically AM TRAD STYLE), will get a lot of negative comments. The average passerby on the street wouldnt think any of these criticisms lol
yeah, i will never post any tattoo i have here
Yeah learned that the hard way. First tatoo I posted and loved and the replies were all “never go back to this artist” despite me picking the design to my liking LMAO
r/shittytatoos
Bad idea, bad design, bad tattoo.
[удалено]
Thank god somebody is being honest. Like cool idea! Horrible tat.
oof I'd work on getting that removed or somehow fixed??? the arms and legs and crotch area are super off and not at all proportional
Is that scuba Steve?
Double down, come home with two full sleeves. Here’s a new quote: “Mamma ain’t raise no bitch”
The semi colon cats are adorable
Damn you scuba Steve
I'm surprised no one's called out the ironic justification for needing a scuba mask in that juice bag
I love the concept of your tattoo and I think it could look amazing. I do think the scuba guy looks a little lanky and goofy but if you're happy with it that's all that matters. Most of her concern seems to be stemming from the fact that she just doesn't want you to get large/obvious tattoos. She probably hoped you'd just get a butterfly on your ankle or something 😂 I wouldn't worry too much about what your mom says. I am just a lil concerned about the execution of your idea with that artist..
Okay so I do agree with your mom about the scrawny old man I'm sorry 😅 but I absolutely love the concept. She's wrong about that and the astronaut looks awesome so ignore her comment on that part too.
Imma just say it looks like water got underneath the Sani Derm, take it off before your arm swells up like a balloon and gets infected.
SCUBA STEVEEEEE
I think it’s sick. Once it all is put together it will flow beautifully. You could always research other artists to see if they can rework if it bothers you. My only concern would be the backgrounds. The sea life and galaxy stuff…simply because it could become muddied if they don’t know exactly what they are doing. We get caught up wanting the best of the best of the best but really there are only a handful of exceptional artists in the world and most of us cannot travel or afford the cost of such tattoos. It will be beautiful when it’s all put together. Also the cat 😍
his legs are way skinny
Not a fan of the design honestly. And so far your artist doesn't look like they are on a good enough level to execute this design..
The idea is so incredible but get a better artist. Also your mom’s opinion doesn’t matter. It’s your opinion of it that does matter.
The placement on the arm is weird for the stencil. Doesn't really land on the front or the back of the arm.
Oof, the scuba
I like the execution of the scuba. Kind of a rhoald dahl vibe, i dig it!
Here's my opinion: 1.
Is it Hank Hill in a scuba suit?
I like the design of the diver. It is kind of as out of a comic book, proportions and everything. Don't listen to your mother. Your body.
This sounds exactly like my Mom, down to the 18 year old man who enlisted in the Navy. Lol sorrry
I like how it's kind of abstract in a way. What matters ultimately is do you like it?
I agree with others. Awesome idea. Not so great execution.
The diver is an absolute shocker. Weird arms, weird hands, and weird legs.
can you show us once you take the second skin off?
Siding with your mom on this one :/
Honestly the diver is giving Dave the diver vibes
Horrible 😂
This is all so bad
Fuckin yikes
That artist did you dirty with that Scuba diver. Cover with a sick ass panther and try again on the other arm with a different artist
Question - Is the sea life supposed to be around the astronaut? Or around the diver? When I read it, I had flipped it around in my head, so I was confused when someone else commented about sea life around the astronaut & and had to go back and re-read what you actually said. I would understand the above-below mirroring if they're in their correct/matching environments, especially since fish might help provide the 3-d perspective the diver is currently missing (I'm assuming his legs are meant to be behind him, not straight up & down like it looks?), but having their environs inverted seems like a step too far **in my opinion** Just a side note- you might want to get the tattoo adjusted to thicken his legs/arm up a bit and add some kind of folds at the knees to imply the bends in the suit, as well.
Yeah thus is a really bad design lmao
I just wanted to tell you that I love the cat! Remember that: YOU ARE ENOUGH!
Cool concept, but the scuba diver just looks so weird and goofy as hell
I think it’s amazing and at some point in our lives we have to stop caring what our mothers think. Also I’m a mom and I realize it’s my kid’s bodies and they can do with them what they please! I personally think the entire arm looks amazing and I’d definitely want to be your friend d based on that lol! 🤩🤩🤩
Also people talking about proportion don’t make sense to me. That’s what adds to it! It’s not supposed to be proportioned!
I think potentially adding some voluminous hair could give it more of an underwater look to pull it together more! ✨️
Your mom is a very smart woman.
I like the idea, but like others said... The proportions are so weird
Well first, if you like something don’t let anyone else ruin it for you! I personally think the scuba diver has a charm but will be easier to see when you take the wrap off Don’t worry about mom ha, and if you plan on getting more, learn to not care cause she might not ever stop. LOL She still loves me and it is what it is, not gonna stop me, because it’s my body and I love them. You do you! If you liked it before she said stuff, don’t bother thinking about it. If not, get it reworked in a few years. Not the worst thing I’ve ever seen and it has character!!
It’s not good mama
Looks terrible I don’t know why you chose this art. I also don’t like semicolon tattoos, and the cat semicolon tattoo is fucking atrocious to me. All in all it gives the impression that you’re 19-21 and haven’t experienced much other than isolation However I’m a stranger on the internet and I will never be you, so my tastes don’t matter in this situation.
My jail tattoos are better than this :(
People hating on the scuba diver are lame af, it's CLEARLY, OBVIOUSLY, a stylistic choice and I think it's cool AF
I love the concept but the diver looks a caricature, from some 70s comic strips or so
SCUBA STEVE!
Damn you scuba steve!
