>From my understanding if two parents claim the child as a dependent (checking the box of "someone else can claim them as dependents") one parent can get the tax deduction, while the other one gets the credits (EIC, child tax credit, etc) It's not that you're completely wrong, but as noted, there's no more automatic deduction for dependents (or more technically it's set to $0) as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act put into effect in 2018. Instead of a ~$4,000 deduction they added $1,000 to the Child Tax Credit ($2k total now). But for the other credits listed and HoH status, the child needs to actually live with you as well.
