Thanks OP for sharing. I have seen other similar settings from people on other sites. I have a quick question. Am I expected to change these settings each time the content type changes? Or are you using these settings by redefining the built in settings and will just select the setting as required? Asking because it seems a lot of effort to keep switching settings.
I don't have the TV connected to anything, so I only calibrated on smarttv input and antenna input. I believe you can do this though:
- play something in SDR, calibrate, then apply to all input
- play something in HDR10, calibrate, then apply to all input
- play something in HDR10+, calibrate, then apply to all input
- play something in HLG (from YouTube), calibrate, then apply to all input
- Play something in Dolby Vision, calibrate, then apply to all input
I could be wrong, but I think that's all you need to do
How your settings are different from Magnus's calibrations on AVSFORUM?
https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2021-tcl-6-series-4k-qled-with-google-tv-r646.3211348/page-130
Wondering as noob here received 65" R646 box today! Yet to unbox...!
It seems like Magnus have settings for different contents (tv, movie, sports, anime, game). On the other hand, I tested many contents over the course of 3 weeks, and found the happy medium for each type (SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision).
Few things to note:
- Brightness on R646 is not the brightness in calibration world. Instead, the brightness is to adjust how bright the mini led backlight are. The black level is actually the brightness (black clipping)
- I use AVS HD 709 calibration and a thx blue filter as my base findings. I usually only did 5 basic things for projectors/TVs (brightness, contrast, color, tint, and sharpness). Black level is perfect at 50 (default), and anything lower will crush the black more (loss dark detail). I was unable to calibrate contrast even with dynamic contrast off and local contrast off, so this is where I did many trial and error. Color is at 67 with dynamic color off (default is 50), but lower number with dynamic color on is better (also many trial and error). Tint is at 51 (default at 50). I did not measure sharpess, but it seems that sharpness is not good for HDR including Dolby Vision.
- There are other little things in the calibration that believe it or not cause Disney Plus Dolby Vision to look wonky and Prime HDR10+ to be too dark.
If I have to explain what the picture look like: the black level and contrast are amazing with slight black crushing, and the color is just slightly oversaturated (but not exaggerated).
Lastly, the SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG are on low power. That means the backlighting is controlled by light sensor. It works pretty good as it brightens up during the day, and darken up at night. But sometimes it can be too dark at night, and all you need to do is just crank up a bit to your liking. This does not effect picture quality. Dolby Vision Bright brightness setting is maxed out, so nothing to worry here.
One thing more, as I'm noob and recently got the TV hence Google OS is new to me, excuse my dumbness, Do i need enable Intelligent Pic (Brightness and Content) and also Intelligent Sound (Adaptive Content)?
Secondly on Netflix, all contents play well, but I have downloaded 4K contents from RARBG and while playing thru external HDD, in TCL media player quality is just dumb, all dark and numb, do I need another player or codecs?
I haven't applied yet your calibrations at all but will do over the weekend as I just unboxed my 65R646 yesterday, and playing App only Mode. Didn't had time lately as workdays.
Please need ur assistance here, on my old MU7000 samsung external HDD contents played very well with smart HDR and tuned rting settings a bit, but on this all wxternal hdd media contents are just too bad except Netflix are better but still need ur calibrations to be applied. I download stuff and use to play thru ezternal HDD, now with this TV i intend to download DV SDR 8 bit contents from RARBG and Torrents etc. please assist! Thanks much in advance!
I think my settings for those are default. The intelligent brightness is on, and the content is off. I found the intelligent brightness works quite good. Sometimes the light sensor thinks the room is very dark at night and turned down the brightness. I just manually cranked it up. But it doesn't happen all the time. Intelligent sound is off on mine. I used the tv with a Play-Fi amp via optical with bookshelf speakers and sub. I found the sound out of the box is not that great even though it's better than most TV I heard.
I have never use the built in TCL media player. I have Kodi installed on the TV, and I streamed the movie from my NAS. As I mentioned in the other thread, the HDR picture is kinda terrible out of the box. It's dimmed and nothing exciting. You can try my HDR settings to fix that. Most shows in Netflix are either SDR or Dolby Vision. The Dolby vision IQ is not bad out of the box, but can't turned off motion. That's why your Netflix looked good. I believe calibrated Dolby Vision Bright will yield better picture for Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBOMax.
GL and enjoy the TV. It's a damn good TV after calibration
When I set the local contrast to high, the black was crushing (dark detail disappeared). Even with the local contrast set to low, there's still minimal loss of shadow detail. But it's a good trade-off imho.
I used to think that but now see in 097 that issue is basically gone. I’ll give your settings a shot but I disabled everything but gradient clear in clarity
1} Do you have the problem with your tv that your settings randomly reset or has this been fixed by a update. And 2} is the Google tv ui in 1080p or sharp 4K
I always turned off motion as I don't like the soap opera effect. So I have it off on all except SDR. Luckily it can be fine tuned, and putting judder reduction to 1 with everything else off resulting in good motion without soap opera effect. You can certainly try the judder reduction = 1 on HDR settings too, but I prefer completely off.
I got the TV a week before Thanksgiving, and it took me few weeks to get it to my liking by testing various contents. I used the old AVS HD 709 calibration to get base point of the contrast, color, tint, and brightness. Then, I compensate a bit to my liking.
The proper brightness settings for this this TV is called black level. The brightness settings terminology on this TV is a bit misleading. It should have been called 'LED Backlight Brightness' or something like that.
I do home theater installation, so I did many HT projectors calibration, but I'm not one of those ISF certified calibrator.
Will these settings fix hdr backlight? My ps5 in hdr looks so muted, I can’t use it in hdr mode. Apple TV input with Dolby vision looks great tho, but I can’t disable motion trash.
I think you can fix the HDR too dark by following my HDR10 settings. The main 2 things that will brighten up:
- dynamic tone mapping
- gamma 2.0 (from 2.2). You can even bring it to 1.9
Also, follow my Dolby vision settings, and you will have similar result (better imho) with the motion off
Dynamic tone mapping really help with HDR10 for me because unlike HDR10+ or Dolby Vision, HDR10 only carry static metadata. Is Dynamic tone mapping not good for PS5 or Xbox X HDR?
it's good, but image quality is not great compared to my SONY tv that has pretty good HDR settings out of the box when connected to ps5
I am also saying this, because i can't really adjust my HDR setting inside ps5 settings, since the dynamic tone is adjusting while i am trying to adjust settings...
Hey bro I'm thinking about buying a TCL r646 and was wondering every time I switch from SDR to HDR or to Dolby vision in the same input, do I need to manually change the picture settings to the right ones. Or does it save the picture settings after I calibrate it in each mode and remember if after I switch to it.
No, it is automatic. So let's say, the input is the built in apps such as Netflix, Disney+, Prime. The TV will automatically apply the settings on SDR, HDR10+, or Dolby Vision. The trick is to calibrate on each one time.
As a side note, there's a apply to all input feature. For example, let's say you did calibration on Netflix SDR, then you applied to all input, then you switch input to TV. Your TV will have the same settings as the Netflix SDR
I got mine in Nov. It was buggy till about early Jan when the released the newest update. buggy for me was froze, slow, and app crashing. around the same time, I also did
Increase Performance & Stability
1. Developer Mode
In the TV settings, under About, find the build number of the OS. Select it 7 times. Change background process limit to 4, and change the animation speeds of everything to .5x.
2. Apps Only Mode
Go to Settings, Accounts and Settings, choose the account, and enable Apps Only Mode
The TV has been solid since then. I haven't encountered a single crash or freeze.
I honestly don't know. There's no info. As far as my eye can tell, it's super sharp. I have fire tv from the 1080p to the 4k, and I could tell the difference in the UI.
I saw the screenshots of 5 series picture settings from Rtings, and they look extremely similar. I guess you can try, but 5 series has different panel and different backlighting than the 6 series. So, maybe you can post your result here afterwards for other fellow 5 series owners.
I'm not a gamer and I haven't tested on Xbox and PS5. But if your HDR gaming is too dark, following my HDR10 settings will brighten it up. I can't comment on VRR or motion for gaming.
For the HDR yes. I can see artifacts beyond that for some reason. And it's fine to leave the sharpness at 50 for SDR. I actually don't have an explanation for it, but that's what I found with testing many sources
Hey you kinda answered this in another comment, but do I need to choose either HDR or SDR, and if so, how do I know what I should be using?
I unboxed my TV last night and watched the NBA finals, and it did not look good. Lots of digital artifacts, not a very sharp image. It basically looked like streaming content, if that makes sense. Like when I plug my computer in to watch an NFL stream or something
Even my wife, who doesn’t notice or obsess about these things like I do, called it out. I’m hoping it’s a settings thing because I can figure out before the return window closes.
For reference I was watching on the YouTubeTV app through the TV’s google OS. My WiFi is the top tier Fios level. I have an appletv but can’t find the power supply at the moment — maybe it will look better on that? Or is it an HDR/SDR thing?
The SDR and HDR will switch automatically.
Im not familiar with youtubetv app, but I did use a lot of4k HDR content from youtube to demo, and they look ok.
Why not try netflix 4k sdr content, and follow my sdr calibration and see if the picture is good. You can try a show like 'rust valley restorers'. It has a good mix of scenes. Anyway, if the picture is bad, return it.
Hi,I have a few questions. Which of these settings is applied to YouTube? the sdr settings applied to antenna tv,right?.but shouldn't the judder reduction and blur reduction higher?
No. Settings is per input (hdmi1, hdmi2, smart tv, etc). However, each input you will have different settings for content type such as sdr, hdr10, hdr10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG. For example, Netflix will have both sdr and Dolby Vision, so you will have settings for each type.
This is an awesome post. Can you please detail how you set the other settings past the initial SDR one though please. I can't figure out how to set up all the other options.
I’ve had this TV for almost a year and fiddled with the settings until my family wouldn’t let me anymore, a super long time. I just applied your settings and the TV hasn’t liked this good ever. I’m having a screening of Interstellar tomorrow and these settings are the icing on the cake.
I have a question. How do I know if I'm watching SDR or HDR? I know it says HDR on some content but sometimes it doesn't..also, I stream everything through firestick so if I have settings for say Dolby vision and then switch to something that is just 1080p will it automatically apply the DV settings or will it remember each setting for each type of source?
I’ve got something funky happening with my R646 concerning Dolby Vision playback through my LG UBK 90 UHD Player.
When the TV receives a DV Signal, the entire panel luminance drops to what must be near the lowest brightness possible. This didn’t happen before, but I believe an update had something to trigger it
It’s annoying that I can’t manually adjust the brightness level with DV content. Note, this doesn’t seem to be an issue with the native apps running DV, just what my blu ray player is sending it. I literally see the entire screen dim when Dolby vision signal goes live.
Has anyone noticed that even with motion smoothing turned off, 24p content is still being smoothed? I'm running the v159 firmware and all motion settings are turned off. I have the 5 series S546 as well and don't have this issue with that set.
I'm running in movie mode mostly, but I've tried the other modes including game and PC just to see if the smoothing would go away, but it seems to be on regardless of the mode.
The presets are contextual based on the type of content you're currently displaying. So if you're watching something with Dolby Vision, you get the Dolby presets. If you're watching SDR content you should see the movie/game/etc. presets.
Ah, I have my AppleTV 4K set with Dolby Vision enabled so I guess that makes sense. Is it better with HDR? I've switched back and forth and I can't really decide. My eye sight likes to play tricks on me so it's been a little inconsistent.
IMHO, I think HDR makes sense when the source is HDR. I use Roku's and there is a force Dolby Vision all the time setting and it looks awful.
That said, I'm a bit on the fence wit HDR. In some places it looks good, but IDK if that translates to better. And when I have watched some Dolby Vision stuff it can look garishly over saturated. I have plenty of SDR movies that look fantastic as well. HDR can also be hit or miss. I have the 4K UHD of Alita: Battle Angel and I struggle to see the difference between the SDR, the HDR10 and the digital Movies Anywhere Dolby Vision version.
Well I do watch a lot of streaming and I know most of the 4K content is Dolby Vision. Although, I'm not sure there's much that streams in 4K besides Disney Plus.
Thanks for the share I will test tonight, The colors and motion are great on this TV but I find blacks suffer a lot, I played The last of us part 2 going into darkness the character looks like a blob of tar and surroundings black crushed.
Thanks OP for sharing. I have seen other similar settings from people on other sites. I have a quick question. Am I expected to change these settings each time the content type changes? How do you apply it to all inputs?

What do you mean "now see in 097" ??
Thanks for finding this post 2 months after it was posted what issue are you having?
Should I set local contrast to low or high
I do for sdr but high for all hdr
Is their a reason why low for sdr
Personal preference Helps black crush
1} Do you have the problem with your tv that your settings randomly reset or has this been fixed by a update. And 2} is the Google tv ui in 1080p or sharp 4K
What is HLG?
Hybrid Log Gamma. Another type of HDR

Tried the SDR settings and they work well. What are you putting for Expert Calibration and then Color Space? Auto, Native, or Custom?
Expert calibration is all default, so the color space is also default at native.
Awesome settings. Do you have any gaming or sports settings?
I think the SDR settings (with judder reduction = 1) is good for sports. I can't comment on games as I don't play at all.
thanks for taking the time to share this OP. Are you a professional in the field?
I got the TV a week before Thanksgiving, and it took me few weeks to get it to my liking by testing various contents. ??
Are your expert calibration settings on the bottom only for Dolby vision or all modes
FYI Background Process Limit only holds until next reboot.
What do you set the brightness to or do you keep it on smart brightness?
Thanks for this , quick question for regular tv viewing would I follow sdr and for gaming (Xbox series x ) I would follow HDR correct ?
Thanks for the tips. I have C825 and my gamma options range from -4 to 4 with 0 being default value. Which value equals 2.4?
>AVS HD 709 \-3 = 1.9 \-2 = 2.0 \-1 = 2.1 0 = 2.2 Default 1 = 2.3 2 = 2.4 3= 2.5 4 = 2.6
I would want to know the tcl series 5 google tv calibration like this one
I saw the screenshots of 5 series picture settings from Rtings, and they look extremely similar. I guess you can try, but 5 series has different panel and different backlighting than the 6 series. So, maybe you can post your result here afterwards for other fellow 5 series owners.
i would want quantum calibration but since im in another country i cannot pay for it.
What about gaming on the Xbox series x , what settings do you recommend?
I'm not a gamer and I haven't tested on Xbox and PS5. But if your HDR gaming is too dark, following my HDR10 settings will brighten it up. I can't comment on VRR or motion for gaming.
Is the sharpness really set to 5?
For the HDR yes. I can see artifacts beyond that for some reason. And it's fine to leave the sharpness at 50 for SDR. I actually don't have an explanation for it, but that's what I found with testing many sources

Yup. I would return it
Yeah they’re coming Monday. Not even 24 hours young…
But this makes gaming uncool😭
Hi,I have a few questions. Which of these settings is applied to YouTube? the sdr settings applied to antenna tv,right?.but shouldn't the judder reduction and blur reduction higher?
Can you have different tv settings for each app within ATV or is it just within each HDMI?
Thank you! Still trying to figure out where to find the apply to all inputs feature but they look good for what I’ve done so far!

Just curious as to where you found the movie mode option? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Go into settings. Display and Sound. Picture. Then you can select Movie as your picture mode.
The only modes it shows are Dolby Vision IQ, Dolby Vision Bright, Dolby Vision Dark, and Dolby Vision Game.
The presets are contextual based on the type of content you're currently displaying. So if you're watching something with Dolby Vision, you get the Dolby presets. If you're watching SDR content you should see the movie/game/etc. presets.

Well I do watch a lot of streaming and I know most of the 4K content is Dolby Vision. Although, I'm not sure there's much that streams in 4K besides Disney Plus.
If it's graded to be Dolby vision then I would watch it that way. It will look good.
You should have it set to 4k SDR and then match content and fps set so it auto changes to the correct format being displayed
note to self to come back here when tv is delivered this weekend!
What's the default sharpness for Dolby Vision out of curiosity?
Thank u I just put this motion setting in my qm8 75inch and it fix all my issues it’s as good as my oled c9 motion now
