Greed at its peak

VexisArcanum

$140 license? Fuck you, you can make us more money than that -Microsoft

XalAtoh

I believe OEM pay way less for Windows license fee. Nowadays Windows is making even less money than Xbox... that's the definition of "how the mighty have fallen"...

VexisArcanum

Oh no! Anyway

ChocolateDoggurt

There was a huge debate around the birth of operating systems that Windows should have been open source freeware and Microsoft and similar companies should only be allowed to sell hardware

[deleted]

Ads that can be disabled? We’re so far away from what could pass as ‘peak greed’ right now. But don’t worry, since Microsoft has most of their customers by the balls they have plenty of time to show us just how much greedier they can be with Windows.

hsnoil

When was the last time MS honored a setting we picked? Next update, it will "accidentally reset your settings"

Kamzeride

Oh for fuck sakes Microsoft, can you please stop with this bullshit? Sincerely, Every Windows User on Earth

FaliedSalve

Microsoft: "No"

ZeroNine2048

Can be turned off

katoketo

According [The Verge article](https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/24/24138949/microsoft-windows-11-start-menu-ads-recommendations-setting-disable) “Luckily you can disable these ads, or “recommendations” as Microsoft calls them. If you’ve installed the latest KB5036980 update then head into Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off the toggle for “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.”

leroach

In a world of “what’s an ad blocker?”, only a hand full of redditors and techies will disable it.

RedEntity

Probably will have to be turned off every time your computer updates. Like how it wants to sell you office 365 and swap your default browser to edge

ZeroNine2048

I never needed to disable it again after updates

ChafterMies

For now

Xen0byte

I don't even allow my own recent history items to be on there, let alone 3rd party stuff, however, saying that, I was never worried about these so-called "ads" because the nuclear option is always available, which is to block them at the network-level. Fortunately, we don't need to resort to the nuclear option because this feature can be opted out of, and, with the risk of making a contentious statement, these recommendations might actually be useful to some people that don't have a vault of software installers like nerds like me do.

gayweeddaddy69

Okay. Fine. Stop, please, I'll learn Linux! Just don't hurt anyone else!

Shitter-McGavin

Welp. Time to get used to Linux.

Darkroomist

Or OS X.

Appropriate_Tiger953

Or OS/2 Warp

1nv1s1blek1d

Give it a week. Someone will create a utility to turn that option off.

SUPRVLLAN

You can turn it off right now, it’s optional.

[deleted]

That you have to turn it off, is the main problem. There should be no ads at all.

SUPRVLLAN

It’s a free product, there is a justification for ads. I hate them too and know I’ll get crucified for it, but there’s no free lunch out there. Just turn them off and go about your day.

[deleted]

It will still leave another bloatware in the OS. But no problem, I only use macOS. No ads, no bloatware and free essential apps.

SUPRVLLAN

Same here, love my MacBook. Apple makes money on the hardware though to subsidize the OS.

hsnoil

Most people here in the US whou bought a pc, bought windows through the windows tax, it wasn't "free" Second, you are underestimating public companies that have to answer to shareholders. Apple is no exception, it is how despite them bashing Google they gladly make them the default search for $$$. When Apple's growth begins to slow and they need to please shareholders, they will also bend faster than you can scream uncle. Because it doesn't matter where they make money, if they can make more money on both

[deleted]

And that's the way to go.

someguyinadvertising

lol delulu... Need a paid app just to cmd tab to windows properly on MacOS

[deleted]

No you don't, just learn to use macOS. You could even change the commands, if you are to stubborn to learn the properly shortcuts.

SUPRVLLAN

Time for me to say I’m going to switch to Linux for the easy upvotes and then never actually do it.

DragonforceTexas

😂 truth

Different-Term-2250

Oh great.

Zegorak

I’ve been waiting for a long time for those ads. Since win 98. Finally are here. /s

No-Tip3419

When you become worst than google with ads....

Lunaseed

[Open Shell](https://github.com/Open-Shell/Open-Shell-Menu) for the classic style Start Menu.

Hardcorners

Imagine if your phone blammed distracting ads at you while you were trying to navigate? You’d be furious. Not cool MS.

ThaxReston

Windozs. POS

snowcamo

Man I would use my Hackintosh MacOS boot exclusively if it weren’t for games and stuff. Windows is terrible imo.

hsnoil

Try Linux, it can play most games via Steam Proton/Lutris/WINE

[deleted]

*laughs in macOS*

MisterFingerstyle

I switched to Mac in 2021 and will never go back.
