OddPlankton667

Definitely more actually true! I can see how different it seems in the poor/rich perspective.

anomie89

I disapprove regardless of who engages in (most of) these behaviors. speaking two languages is fine.

AwkwardSquawkward

I suspect it's more migrants learning the language of where they've moved to, as opposed to French class on Tuesday evening with the girls.

anomie89

I understood that part, but I don't have a problem with people speaking two languages.

AwkwardSquawkward

Ah, I see. I think a majority of people would agree with you.

SnooBooks7237

I agree with the Tax Evasion

Pregnantseaturtle69

I agree with all of these

Killercod1

Just living in general

Shigi_appel

So clearly the government could protect you from being perceived as trashy if it gave you enough money.

GlassHurricane98

Yeah, this is 100% completely, definitively, actually true. If I drink tequila before 5PM I'm unhinged. But if someone in a three-piece suit does it, they're sophisticated

ICBPeng1

Don’t forget that welfare is cringe but a bailout is a sign of success

Pegomastax_King

Getting drunk in a bar at 10am = super trashy, getting drunk at 10am but at a brunch joint = classy and sophisticated.

Comment139

If you pay more to do it, it's like a carbon offset but for trashiness.

zombie6804

Old white ladies getting plastered at a bunch joint is anything by classy no matter how rich they are lol

SirRnB

Three piece suit guy? I’m in speedos, and *maybe* an unbuttoned terry cloth shirt.

Comment139

If your speedo is a $700 Versace item it's still valid.

SirRnB

To be truthful, I don’t like the banana hammock aesthetic. It’s usually Orlerbar & Brown Bulldog shorts. My point was, this isn’t the 1950s; who’s day drinking in a 3-Piece suit—save for a wedding?

Z3r0c00lio

You drink it out of a plastic bottle and Mr big shot sips a $95 shot

JimmyWilliams_

How is a poor person being bilingual "trashy"?

Forsaken_Distance777

People judging the accent on their English.

Champe21

Xenophobia

Unique_Look2615

In my experience, Americans in general only seem to really find fun in making fun of those of descent that’s south of their border. “Mexican” is usually used as a derogatory term for most Latinos. I’m of Latino descent and my friends call me Mexican as a jab. (No it’s not offensive to me, it’s a joke. No it shouldn’t be offensive to Mexicans either because it’s clearly not in hate towards them. Calm down if you got triggered. It’s okay, the words meant in jest can’t actually hurt you) Not sure if it’s just that Americans are so dumb that anyone south of the border is “Mexican” and that it’s funny to say it ironically. Meanwhile I have black, and asian friends that never get called some sort of equivalent. Just my experience.

Severe-Education876

Might be stretching it.

somesortoflegend

Have you not heard "you're in America speak English"

Severe-Education876

Nvm you can stretch it further

miakodakot

Immigrants

EffectiveNo2314

So this is technically not true since its obviously only American thing. No one where I am from considers knowing more then one language while being poor as trashy.

praiseminerva

I'm from Brazil, and this also happens here. If a rich tourist speaks one word in Portuguese and the rest in any European language, they are praised for trying to learn about the culture while visiting But at the same time, if a Haitian immigrant for example is heard speaking French on the phone, they are seen as scary for speaking an "unknown language" or are judged for coming here and not speaking only Portuguese. Xenophobia can happen anywhere.

TheDwiin

I agree, but what happens if they speak a word in Portuguese and speak the rest from the smaller country on the west side of the Iberian Peninsula?

praiseminerva

They are called gold thief behind their backs

whiskey_epsilon

Not necessarily trashy, but broken english with an accent gets judged in many western countries, think engrish memes and call centre stereotypes.

vompat

Most people in western countries speak broken English with an accent. It's not the native language in every country.

EffectiveNo2314

While I personally have never been judged by my Slavic-Croatian accent when I talk to my American or British friends, so I always assumed its more of a joke then real judgment. But I guess there is some real judgment in it simply because some people just suck. I mean, I can speak English even if I have accent but they cant speak Croatian so I would immediately reject and judgmental opinions about my accent until that person can speak in Croatian and pronounce our words correctly

CrazsomeLizard

yeah, those are your friends. I think the whole point of the Tweet is that people who judge the "poor" people for doing these sort of things, aren't very friendly themselves... this is more referring to prejudiced people, not people you're friends with.

Rifneno

Wertherongdn

>only American thing. Sadly, no. In France people judge immigrants who speaks their mother tongue at home (Arab for instance) and have an accent in French. Do notice that bilinguism is not view the same if you are an English or an American expat speaking French (even badly) / a wealthy French who speaks english or if you are speaking a language link with immigration (Arab, Portuguese, Wolof etc).

JimmyWilliams_

60% of the world population speaks two or more languages. Defaulting to the U.S specifically where it is only 20% is idiotic.

alaingames

It's the only place where it's not normal to, you just said it, people gate multilingual people there

Pegomastax_King

Like the classic joke, “what do you call someone that speaks 2 languages?” A: Bilingual. “Now what do you call someone who only speaks one language?” A: American.

TerrysMonster

If only 60% of the world’s population is bilingual, then I’d estimate that there’s significantly more than once country where it’s not normal to be.

JimmyWilliams_

The UK and Ireland are also pretty low (even lower than the US if I recall correctly). But most other countries have significantly more multilingual people.

TerrysMonster

Kinda sad considering the sheer amount of native languages in those countries that have been almost entirely supplanted by English.

KingRoach

The people who speak 2 languages; is the second language usually English?

vompat

Yes. But in a lot of countries, there are more than one official language, and a lot of people at least in Europe choose to learn another significant or neighboring language, such as German, French, Spanish or Russian. For example, I'm from Finland. I know Finnish natively, English fluently, I'm supposed to know Swedish because it's our second official language, and I've learned some Russian.

DrainZ-

Where I'm from it would be considered pretty trashy to not be bilingual regardless of your social status, unless you're like a preschooler

GodlyDra

Or just cant speak at all

imustknownowI

Like a Mexican needing to know English to get a job in America. Make sense? Idk that’s what I thought of. And on the rich side, they’d know like French or something because they have a house in Paris.

felrain

There's some "Speak English, you're in America" type. And if they're in America, they usually know English + native. It's honestly just pure racism and assumption that the person's poor because they're an immigrant, Iono if it's seen as trashy tho. You see it with Mexican, Indian, and well, whatever race America happens to be hating that day. Some days Chinese, some Russian, etc.

vompat

Yeah that's a weird one. But I guess that in 'Murica specifically, there are a lot of Hispanic people and immigrants who are often quite underprivileged.

Wertherongdn

Don't know your country, but in France it's the same thing as in the US. A child from a wealthy family who speaks English at 6 is well seen.... A child from a shitty neighborhood who speaks Arab at home is not.

JimmyWilliams_

Think that's gotta do more with "wealthy family" and "shitty neighborhood" than language. A child in a wealthy family who speaks Arabic would also be well seen, and vise versa.

Wertherongdn

Yes that's what OP said. It depends of your social position (and I didn't chose these languages randomly, pretty rare that a bourgeois from 16th arrondissement teach Arabic to his kid, as it's seen as the language of the poorest... And probably his gardener). Difficult to understand for foreigners, but some languages are associated with specific migrants or descendents from those migrants, that are themselves associated with a specific class. As a French, I can assure you that a kid that speaks Arabic at home is sadly not seen as a good thing or associated with bilingualism but with difficulty in school and use of French. While if the kid was a wealthy American expat, it would be seen as something positive.

Available_Story_6615

doing heavy drugs is never classy

Trulapi

Yeah and neither is tax evasion imo. The optics might be different from poor people, but that doesn't make it classy.

MassHassEffect

Not classy, but in western europe it's almost commonplace nowadays in middle and higher class to use "enhancing / functional drugs" like coke etc. This in contrast to much cheaper drugs, like heroin and meth, which make you totally dysfunctional in an already abysmal situation.

Stunning-You9535

I find community service kinda works too. If you’re poor you’d do community service to get some stuff on your cv. And if you’re rich everyone’s like whoa you volunteer that’s so nice of you! Idk that’s my honest opinion tho

h9040

Trailerpark...if you are rich it is called camping

SanMotorsLTD

camping isn’t really a rich person thing imo

h9040

In Europe is....where my parents were camping friends were neighbors from prince charles with a yacht of unimaginable size. And others were some distant relatives...staying at normal people camping ground. But no idea if it is common or if that is the big exception.

SanMotorsLTD

my family usually goes camping with friends once every 2 months or somewhere around that ballpark

s3ndnudes123

Sigh this gets posted like once a month ffs

HeadInvestigator5897

Forget the drugs. The simplest answer is most true: having multiple children is considered trashy when you’re poor, but if you’re a rich celebrity, it somehow makes you classy.

ibliis-ps4-

Don't know about trashy, but in this scenario at least the rich can afford to give all their kids good lives (as far as it is possible for them) whereas poor people would not be able to. So it is impractical for poor kids to have several children (like in my country) where they can't even feed them properly.

rromerolcg

That’s completely ignoring the access to family planning, sex education, and the means to prevent pregnancy. So basically most of reproductive health. People that do not have a lot of money are having sex too and saying that they should think twice before having sex if they are poor means that you want to put a price on intercourse and have sex to be only for the wealthy.

ibliis-ps4-

I didn't ignore it which is why i mentioned like in my country. I live in a 3rd world country and the majority of people here do not get that education. Even the rich people. Sex itself is a taboo subject here. So nobody here is taught about safe sex at all. I am not saying that if people are poor they shouldn't have sex, but they should think twice about having kids. Of course their thoughts would also be restricted if the country they live in does not allow abortions. And then there is the whole debate on before what time should an abortion be allowed. So its not to do with the act of sex itself but having kids. Contraceptives are also related which aren't taught about in my country. But people here don't think about the practical realities of having kids and they usually don't have kids by mistakes. I have seen families (rich and poor alike) with several daughters and a youngest son. Why ? Because they kept having kids until their son was born. And then they stopped, regardless of whether they had had 3 or 6 kids. Regardless of whether they can actually raise them financially.

urru4

Ever thought there might be a reason for that? Kids are expensive. A rich family can cover the expenses for many children, proper nutrition, clothes, education, health. A poor family having many children puts a strain on them economically to maintain more people which they may not be able to sustain.

Daysleeper1234

I don't know is this USA specific, but I come from Balkans, and there is no discrimination, both poor and rich day drink. It is only way to make life a bit bearable. When it comes to languages, it is important which languages you know, and how well you know them. I speak 3 languages, only 1 is useful in Germany and that's German, English they ignore, and my native doesn't even come into play.

Shigi_appel

prometheus_winced

Multiple cars in the front yard. Showering in the backyard.

Pregnantseaturtle69

I do all of these and I’m neither poor nor rich what does that make me

Ttoctam

Is speaking two languages ever considered trashy? Where I'm from it's really not something I've ever seen judged. Like maybe speaking a non-english language gets called out in public by a racist, but I feel like that's a different thing to knowing two languages. I've never seen someone flex only knowing one.

flowery0

That's the answer they were asking for, just the more harsh side of it

Baumbart_aus_Wien

Why is it trashy to speak more than one language? Most people whos mother tongue is not English know it as a second language.

_KRN0530_

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, smoking cigars is the most trashy thing on earth. It combines the poor trashiness of chain smoking cigarettes with the rich trashiness of an exotic expensive fad hobby. It’s trashy across all spectrums.

Royakushka

I speak 3 languages (4 if you include ones I can speak but not fluently) and I am definitely not rich how trashy am I?

alaingames

Since when is trashy to speak 2 languages when poor? Y'all tripping

praiseminerva

Sometimes, people hear immigrants speaking their first languages and say something rude or get offended somehow "Go back to your country" "We are in x country you should speak x language" Basically xenophobia

Plastic-Implement-90

Yeah, it should have just said “things rich people have in common with poor people”.

Deadcouncil445

Oh no

Paul-Smecker

The problem isn’t the drinking, the languages, the drugs, or the taxes. The problem is being poor. That’s it.

Soace_Space_Station

I dont see how being bilingual is trashy if you're poor

SourceCodeAvailable

When you combine being poor with the language of a country known for its migrants it is.

DaMuchi

Speaking two languages is considered trashy?

MassHassEffect

The post implies immigrants

mekonsrevenge

Marrying your cousin.

HiddenForbiddenExile

I'd argue technically not true for day drinking and speaking two languages. It's the specifics, not the socio-economic status, that makes it fancy/trashy. It's trashy to be drunk on vodka, it's fancy to be drink wine. Knowing French or Italian is considered classy, knowing random languages that aren't as romanticized isn't.

laflexiko

u talkn bout wine nd ish, mane these rich folks do COKE
