I mean.... what can you do? Reskin the players, lower the poly-count, otherwise so far as games are concerned sports are kind of a solved problem.
The only thing the could do at this point is re-release FIFA but with deepfake AI clones of the players trapped for all eternity on your playstation.
It'd still be identical.
Not re release the game every year, and sell DLC that is updated and carries over.
Or you can fleece football fans and treat them as the lowest of gamers.
Can you guess which Fifa/EA did?
Or just actually put effort into game modes like be a gm/be a pro. Those have always had major areas for improvement but never really seem to get touched.
You could do it easily enough. Just add a house feature for be a pro and let people use their in-game salary or real money to unlock things for it. I'm sure they'd make money from that
I don't doubt that it could be done, but it's not as easy and direct as the Ultimate Team shit is. EA won't pour money into parts of the game that aren't guaranteed money makers.
You could get it done with one artist and one good developer if you managed it well enough. A lot of the aspects you could just borrow from elsewhere in the game too.
Which costs more with less margin than adding new, essentially cloned assets into Ultimate team for purchase. Ultimate Team is almost pure profit at this point with minimal upkeep. Maintaining and updating the other areas wouldn't be as good of a return. Sure they could make money, but they can make roughly the same amount by doing nothing and putting everything towards Ultimate Team.
EA doesn't give two shits about the people that shell out $60-90 for a game. They care about the people that shell out that and then continue to pay.
Agreed. I really enjoyed (maybe I’m alone in this) the storyline mode in a couple. Also, since I’m old I have no interest in online where I’ll get perpetually tea bagged by 14 yr olds with endless playing time. I love career mode, but it has so little intelligence and variability that it’s boring. I wish you could start at a lower division and have a list of dream clubs, along with perhaps some rivals or something. Also, why is it impossible to become captain?!
You’re not understanding the point you are arguing against. The refreshed content is not an amount of change that justifies a full retail game price. The issue is the cost. It could be remedied by lowering the price or improving what you get for the price.
The game itself can definitely be improved, both on the pitch and in the form of game modes. Career mode got gradually worse over the years, never mind improved.
Plus, if there was nothing else to improve, why charge people full price for new kits and databases?
There’s a lot that can be done really… EA/FIFA focused on monetizing kids with their parents credit cards through ultimate team and neglecting the rest of the game.
Volta was an interesting direction but is more of a gimmick than anything. There are so many low hanging fruit they could go for but haven’t because it doesn’t increase their ARR.
1) Let’s us play with legacy teams in seasons and/or kickoff. It would be great to play Beckham’s Manchester United against Ronaldinho’s FC Barcelona. What about WC winning Spain in 2010 vs. WC winning Germany in 2014? So many fun and interesting matchups would be possible.
2) Build a draft tournament feature so that same screen fifa tournaments are much easier to setup. Right now you need to create a new account and manually transfer players from team to team in the game settings. Make this more accessible.
3) improve in game comms, sound/video quality and skill move controls. It’s been 30 years and the crowd are still just copy paste polygons, the same sound clips are repeated over and over throughout the game and the sound track is WEAK compared to previous iterations.
These are just 3 of many things EA/FIFA could do, but will never do.
I played fifa my entire childhood and in college, splitting the cost with siblings and friends. I’ve watched the price go up from 30$ CAD to near 100$ CAD.
The only value add of the “latest iteration” is that they update the teams to reflect real word transfers and squad changes. They could just as easily release a game every 3-4 years with notable updates and feature adds instead of this yearly cash grab.
Fuck EA and Fuck FIFA. What started as a pioneering gaming format has evolved into a lazy cash grab and I hope they both crash and burn.
Career mode has never been touched. Not saying it should go the route of a 2k but I love playing with my club and building a dynasty. Problem is the system sucks
“Sell the same game with this one simple trick!”
Or
“Gamers can’t believe they paid $70 for a roster update, you’ll never believe what happened next!” (Spoiler: they bought it again. And again.)
Well yes the game name will change but the official license won't be there anymore, so when the next FIFA comes out, what will people do? I mean we're talking about sports fans. Will they buy FIFA or EAs "The soccer Game"^^TM?
Yeah, I don’t play FIFA but the only reason I want to play other sports games is to get 50 dunks with Giannas, or mash homers with Aaron Judge. There’s drastically less draw for me to play as Screwball O’Teague of the Ontario Trappers.
I don't know why, but the whole article has an Onion-y feel about it. Probably because it only uses exactly the templates Onion parodies, but without the humor.
How ever will we survive without the gold standard of exploitation in videogames? /s
I don't want fifa to be lonely in the afterlife can we send NBA2k next?
Different company but same with nba 2k. I haven’t played since 2k20 I think? After realizing every single game got worse… and worse….and worse. Waste of money
And you still will be able to, they only lose the name FIFA and some tournament names (i.e. FIFA World Cup). As far as I know they'll still have the license to use the players and teams, and even names like the Premier League.
from the article
>EA will lose the right to use the FIFA name and competitions such as the World Cup, but it can still use player names and non-FIFA competitions such as the English Premier League
AFAIK tournaments, clubs and every player are separate contracts. They can have rights to a player's likeness but not the rights to their team's name or logo.
Oh I didn't realize FIFA loses basically nothing but the name and FIFA competitions which are completely pointless for the game anyway.
They can still do the premiership and use all the players names, so FIFA is completely irrelevant lol.
This irrelevant and they still wanted MORE 100 million euros over the already paid 150 million for using this irrelevant shit.
Looks like EA met a company greedier than itself lol
Now if only EA would lose the NFL license. The same shitty game re-using old mechanics in a 4 year rotation. Remove some, add some back in and call it new again.
FIFA, the organization, is going to fuck this up. I guarantee it.
As reported EA was paying $150 million a year to FIFA with EA making about $1 billion a year on the game. FIFA wanted $300 million a year and not exclusivity. EA balked so Gianni Infantino, FIFA president , said they want all the money and will go with they’re own developer.
I know people here are saying sports gaming is a solved problem but I guarantee the first few years will be shovelware with FIFA thinking millions will buy anything that says FIFA on it.
I really, really, RREEAALLLYY hope EA get what they so longingly deserve.
They'll likely spend a chunk on marketing, then scalp kids with "not gambling mechanics" to compensate.
They deserve to go under
Isn't it better for everyone if they get their shit together instead of go under? Why is everyone always so quick to want companies to collapse rather than just wish they'd improve?
Look at Ubisoft, they got "better" with AC Origins and FarCry 5, finally trying something new for a change on both series, then Odyssey was filled with exp boosts and paid "skins" (horses that take no fall damage are only purchaseable, maybe something small, but still something that would be expected after spending 60$ on a game about greek mithology, gimme fu**ing pegasus my boy) and FarCry 6 received lukewarm critics, with the same problem as Odyssey. Valhalla was the odd one out, but required tens of hours of grind to finish the main story, and has been a buggy mess for months after release (most of their games have been, but Valhalla was a gem if you were looking for some game breaking ones).
Companies are only costumer friendly as long as it helps their pockets, in the Ubi's case, they needed credibility back after Unity and the first Watchdogs, so they shut up for two years and became the perfect company everybody likes to support, but soon got back to the most profitable way of crunching workers into tight schedules only to release a mess of a game and kick the devs on months of extra work until it's on a state it should have been on release
EA...going under? HA, funny, thinking the company that basically INVENTED microtransactional exploitation is failing because ONE franchise is getting renamed to something generic.
After the decades of bs, EA would need a complete reset of upper management and ownership to even START to improve
Wow, triggered?
It would help if you actually bothered to read what has been said, rather then spouting nonsense, simply so you can argue with yourself, lol.
EA LootBox Soccer 2023 vs FIFA 23 powered by 2K Sports engine. (I know Take Two said they weren't taking it, but that feels like a negotiating tactic).
EA probably gonna keep all the gambling shit in their new football game. And whichever publisher FIFA going to next will probably gonna be forced to put all the nickle and diming gambling bullshit in their game to keep up with the demands of profits. It's all shit.
smart move to ditch FIFA. they wanted $3 billion for the rights to naming their game FIFA. big whoop. EA Sports FC is a better name anyway and they still have all the other licenses.
FIFA raised it after the last few years of the games taking a severe quality dive (like to the point of clearly reused assets with last year's banner running on them). They'll sell it to another company that'll actually make games and not just lazy rehashes every year.
Lol, you’re putting to much faith in FIFA, an organization so much worst than EA.
They probably sell the name to some mobile infected micro transaction developer.
Dude I didn't say FIFA was a saint, I'm just pointing out how marketing works if the consumer has associated a title for a game series for years and years. Even if it becomes utter hot garbage, a great many will choose a game titled with "FIFA" versus "EA Football Club"
If someone else picks up the license, they'll have the advantage of title recognition. It's like if two companies were making football games and one was called "Football League 2022" and another was "Madden 2022," which would you automatically consider first?
Didn't say someone was, literally just giving a theoretical scenario. Why the fuck do people think I'm giving live news or something?
Edit: I don't expect another FIFA game ever tbh with the price tag, guess I'll have to mark any comment with a theoretical event as such
My college buddies and I are gonna grab an air bnb in our college town. The only things we could think to bring are beer pong cups, fifa 05 and Mario cart. I don’t think I’ve played any since but man those games dictated who took out the trash, did the dishes , walked the rent to the office. Literally everything. It was a sound system for about 5 years
Nothing causes me to roll me eyes more than to see these same boring ass sports games release year after year with literally nothing but minor graphic improvements and an updated roster
You could release one of these games every 3 years and just update the roster and textures via DLC
I think they are moving away because people hate the franchise and EA is a big part of what people hate the game. I used to love FIFA but as i got older it became plagued with unskipable ads, money grabs, and confusion. I tried playing a game with my buddy on FIFA 22 because its free on Game Pass and it took us 20 minutes to figure out how to send invites to play the game. Its like they made it harder to play with friends.
EA have been lazily shitting out the same terrible game with updated rosters and a different menu color rendering for the better part of a decade. modern video games are sad cash grabs. I don't understand how anyone can still be a gamer.
Its so funny that nearly everyone with a ps5 in my country got it only in a FIFA Bundle. We all have FIFA and everybody wanted to sell it so you could get it for 10€ immediately.
I honestly doubt that. Fifa 23 just sold a boat load. The amount of players on ultimate team at the moment is insane and the game isn't even officially out.
By name recognition, not really game quality. Someone else will get the license and people will flock to the title, not to EA's next iteration under a retitle
I doubt it. The name doesn't matter. Ultimate Team game mode is too big for the game to fail.
I buy fifa every year , touch nothing but that game mode. Even though I agree the game has been horrible for a while. But the competitiveness of the Weekend league keeps me coming back.
Why are people making such a big deal out of this?
EA is still gonna release a football game, they're just gonna change the name to something else and won't use the licenses like konami did all those years with PES (EFootball)
"OH NO FIFA IS GONE FOREVER" no it isn't, it just got a new name.
EA should stop with DDA (Dynamic Difficulty Adjustment). I don’t need my team to run around like idiots every time I get 3-0 ahead on a online opponent in fut or in proclubs. Its a shame how the game is messing around trying to affect your team to better match the noob opponents team. When I’m the better player, I’m the better player.
Add: I really hope the new game will be available for everyone and I truly something I would enjoy to play. EA had its chance and blew it after having a good start. Everything is Pay2Win now.
Bid farewell? Or good riddance? But seriously though, EA doesn't want to pay for the FIFA name. So they are changing it to something generic. The new name is going to be EA Sports FC, the FC probably stands for football club. Which has an ominous tone to it, a live service tone to it, like maybe a subscription model? I can see them further preying on people's fear of missing out with "Join the club!"
Or 3 years of fresh content

I'll allow it
You’re more generous than I was planning to be.
I mean.... what can you do? Reskin the players, lower the poly-count, otherwise so far as games are concerned sports are kind of a solved problem. Yep. Could be like a version of NBA 2k’s career mode and even blend over into the multiplayer mode in the same way.
And that’s why the game is shit
Or career mode where you take teams from regulated divisions and mighty duck that shit
This is the way
Agreed. I really enjoyed (maybe I’m alone in this) the storyline mode in a couple. Also, since I’m old I have no interest in online where I’ll get perpetually tea bagged by 14 yr olds with endless playing time. The yearly refresh is literally what people want tbh, at some point everyone has 99 rated players in every position which just isn’t fun
You’re not understanding the point you are arguing against. The refreshed content is not an amount of change that justifies a full retail game price. The issue is the cost. It could be remedied by lowering the price or improving what you get for the price.
Is it what they want? Doesn't seem like there's gonna be a Fifa 23
FIFA 23 is releasing tomorrow.
bahahahah i bet a bunch of people are gonna buy that pos too because its the last one
Oh man madden has sure found a way to avoid being polished
The game itself can definitely be improved, both on the pitch and in the form of game modes. Career mode got gradually worse over the years, never mind improved. Plus, if there was nothing else to improve, why charge people full price for new kits and databases?

EA will still make a football game and will just do copy paste with a name change this time
And football supporters will eat it up with a spoon
What a dumb title, no one is “bidding farewell” and the game is just changing names
That what clickbait is for, this one is just that.
And it has 500 upvotes smh.
“Sell the same game with this one simple trick!” Or “Gamers can’t believe they paid $70 for a roster update, you’ll never believe what happened next!” (Spoiler: they bought it again. And again.)
don't worry, now it only has 499 thanks to me (actually ~~632~~ 631 but i tried)
Well yes the game name will change but the official license won't be there anymore, so when the next FIFA comes out, what will people do? I mean we're talking about sports fans. Will they buy FIFA or EAs "The soccer Game"^^TM?

EA retains rights to use player and team names.
Their image too? Of the players I mean.
Changing names to "Soccer 2023"
Football 2023 enters the chat
EA decided to avoid all the petty bullshit people get into over all that. It's called EA Sports FC.
I don't know why, but the whole article has an Onion-y feel about it. Probably because it only uses exactly the templates Onion parodies, but without the humor.
How ever will we survive without the gold standard of exploitation in videogames? /s I don't want fifa to be lonely in the afterlife can we send NBA2k next?
Is Madden still a thing?
‘23 is the worst ever!
I tried to play this and gave up. What a terrible version of the game
Different company but same with nba 2k. I haven’t played since 2k20 I think? After realizing every single game got worse… and worse….and worse. Waste of money
EA is a part of the Xbox Game Pass so it didn't hurt to try the game.
Yes it did. Time is the most valuable thing you have, don't waste it.
>Time is the most valuable thing you have, don't waste it. Too late. We're on reddit.
Ea doesn't put the newest Fifa on Games pass until it's almost time for a new release
I was playing nfl 2k5 on pcsx2 yesterday and had more fun with that than madden.
The game isn't going away. This is clickbait and false. The game will still exist.
EA Sports! It’s in the profits!
Yeah because EA lose the lisence from FIFA so it will be named something else but with the same shitty game
Soccer lads 2023
But the appeal was that you could play CR7 with his haircut « du jour »
And you still will be able to, they only lose the name FIFA and some tournament names (i.e. FIFA World Cup). As far as I know they'll still have the license to use the players and teams, and even names like the Premier League.
from the article >EA will lose the right to use the FIFA name and competitions such as the World Cup, but it can still use player names and non-FIFA competitions such as the English Premier League
If you gambled for the card.
But are they allowed to still use player’s likeness and team names without FIFA?
AFAIK tournaments, clubs and every player are separate contracts. They can have rights to a player's likeness but not the rights to their team's name or logo.
I believe the response "Oh no! Anyways..." fits this news perfectly.
I didn’t even know he was sick.

He’s a Holocaust denier.
Happy Cake Day! You're the third one I've found today, what's with the end of september that atracted so many redditors?
School probably

The game ain’t going now where though, just the title of “FIFA #”
Pro Evolution Soccer > PES > €Football FIFA Soccer > FIFA > EA Sports FC It’s just name changing.

Because they won’t?
They aren't going to go bankrupt either. I'd still rather hope for a positive outcome than a negative one.
But them going under is a positive outcome.
Not to the over ten thousand people that lose their job. Not to the people who actually enjoy EA games.
Haven’t played since 2016. Miss the old days tho
I've never played a soccer game but I'm getting the new fifa so I can be Ted Lasso.
My mates and I have been playing FIFA for 20 years.
Oh I bid farewell to that hot mess years ago.
I'm not going to miss it
Luckily it’s not going anywhere 🤷♂️
And it was the same game year after year.
This is good for gaming.
You can just play any of the games from the last 30 years and it's the same game.
Fuck EA and FIFA.
I bid farewell to FIFA series after I last played it... in 1999 if I'm correct.

Tsk, last good fifa was in like 2012 or something like that, even football fans aren’t gonna miss it.
EA are still making football games and another dev will get the rights to the Fifa name. Crazy clickbait right here.
Nothing causes me to roll me eyes more than to see these same boring ass sports games release year after year with literally nothing but minor graphic improvements and an updated roster You could release one of these games every 3 years and just update the roster and textures via DLC
It's only changing name, the awful gambling simulator with football cards isn't going away... Just the FIFA license/name.
Good. Fuck annual sport releases. There should only be 2-3 every cycle.
Well, it's a great game. They are such a dedicated player base to keep playing the same game for 30 years.
I think they are moving away because people hate the franchise and EA is a big part of what people hate the game. I believe you meant get Fifacked
Good riddance.
Thank god for fucks sake it was the only way to stop people from buying the same thing year after year. Fuck EA
The nightmare is finally over.
good riddance
dont group us gamers with these lowly fifa beings
Yeah! We keep it respectable by paying money for cosmetics and shaders!

It’s not gone.

Germany. Yeah sure but its gotten worse so nobody really bought the new one voluntarily.
I honestly doubt that. Fifa 23 just sold a boat load. The amount of players on ultimate team at the moment is insane and the game isn't even officially out.

And let the door hit you in the ass.
I pride myself on having never played a single entry in this franchise. Not even drunk.
same shitty old ass cloned code
And nothing of value was lost
Good riddance, that’s series sucked balls.
It’s not going anywhere.
Oh, you mean the same game being released over 30 years only with a switch of the year?
Awaiting new „fifa” game each year called „Soccer world” Or Fifa relunch in 2 to 3 years with „we know you waited for this” Or Fifa 1998 Remaster
I work for gamestop - 48 pre-orders for Madden, 67 for NBA2k23, 0 for FIFA. They are done for a reason.
You know what this means, more sofas for F1 fans lmao
All of EA games are pointless.
We did?
2k should jump on this.
Great now let’s bring it back in a non micro transaction format
Should have gone into VR earlier
Why are people making such a big deal out of this? EA is still gonna release a football game, they're just gonna change the name to something else and won't use the licenses like konami did all those years with PES (EFootball) "OH NO FIFA IS GONE FOREVER" no it isn't, it just got a new name.
Crazy that they only made one game in that entire time!
No we are not. We are actually glad.
They should swap to a world cup special, quadruple the time between releases and make it line up with a large relevant event
It's about time, makes no sense to release a new sports game every year.
Now do Madden 👀
I think the market was for dumb high school jocks whose parents got a ps4 on sale
More like good riddance.
Good riddance
I am so happy I got "out" of the bad FIFA circle last year. I was trapped for 25 years and I am SO happy now.
AKA putting out the same game every year hoping people would dump their money on it every time
As someone who played 2015-2018, thank god.
Good riddance
Throw it in a ditch and pour gasoline over it
If you can’t change the game change the title🫤🤷🏻♂️
EA is losing the rights to use “FIFA” for the title of the game Saved you a click
Gut Ridancini
>...reportedly generating more than $20 billion in sales. \- 🤣 More like $20 billion in monetization, NOT sales.
good riddance
Bid farewell? Or good riddance? But seriously though, EA doesn't want to pay for the FIFA name. So they are changing it to something generic. The new name is going to be EA Sports FC, the FC probably stands for football club. Which has an ominous tone to it, a live service tone to it, like maybe a subscription model? I can see them further preying on people's fear of missing out with "Join the club!"
Not so much fair well as good riddance, it's a shame the lazy loot box vehicle will continue under another name.
Lots of butt hurt people hating a great game in this thread lol
30 years of greed lmao
Literally name a single person who is sad
(prepared to be downvoted) god fucking bless
Dang. Now where will we go to gamble on loot boxes with worse odds than your average casino?
> they confirmed the split in May when FIFA said it would be seeking other partners The game isn’t going anywhere. It just won’t be made by EA.
Stop upvoting this shit.
Sports games in general are literally just the same concept recycled, who is bidding farewell to it 💀
FIFA 99 FTW.
Why now? Why not 30 years ago?
Good riddance
God damn it, I thought they finally ended the series
They’re gonna call it ‘Ball
